Cannot execute \windows\pcm.exe problem - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hi Guys ...
This is my first post ever, aldo I'm allready a member for 3 years
Where to start .. I have an Artemis P3300 and I'm very happy with it ! My wife has a ELF with more memory, but I'll prefer My Artemis Anyway !!
I have a problem since a month that I can not solve because I dont find someone with the same problem !
I have windows mobile 6 Professional (CE OS 5.2.1620 build 18125.0.4.2
over there is the Spb mobile Shell version 3.5.0 build 9593
I have the SDHC drivers for my mem card of 8 gig
I turn also Iconsoft Phone Extension 2.2 (the best there is !!!)
and to speed things op a 247 Mhz I use Chi-Tai Dang Homescreen Plus Plus
To know where I am I use Tom Tom Navigator 7.910 (9185)
I have chosen very wisely what To put on it because with this I have still 11,44Mb Storage and 11,51Mb Program left !! So everything turned super smoothly and nice !!!
Untill a month ago where I constantly have the "cannot execute \windows\pcm.exe" When i see the message, then everything becomes incredibly slow and it doesnt even go to Call me anymore . The Call sound is also gone ...
Strange ...
Is there one person on earth who had the same problem like me, or who can help me out ???
That would B amazing !!!

Really... Not a single person ???

hey, think your problem lies within the regestry.
not too sure but i think its a contact manager trying to launch, and cant..
try uninstalling the contact manager..(pcm.exe)
or...
even though you have spent time choosing which programs to install, i suggest you upgrade from wm6 to wm6.1, you will have more storage memory and more free ram! currently i have 38mb free storage and 25mb ram free and i have all the goodies i need installed..
(uspl cmon - first to flash any rom for artemis)
or hard rest..
(you will loose anything on device so back up all data..if you do..)

Incredible
Hey man,
I've exactly the same issue! And I have almost the same configuration with same applications...
Actually, I have an Samsung Omnia with Windows Mobile 6.1, I've also installed spb mobile shell 3 and PhonEx 2.2 (and I totally agree with you, it's the best!), and I've also a lack of memory (I mean main memory, not storage mem because I have 2x8Gb) with 10Mb left (but it's not really constant, it vary from +-1 or 2Mb without removing or adding application) and 40Mb for program, and after something like 1 hour using my phone, the "cannot execute windows/pcm.exe" appears and then, I can't launch no more application, and the opened applications crashed and I have to restart the device to refind a normal behaviour for 1 hour more...
So , I looked for this pcm.exe in my device and its attached logo is the Phonex logo and I tried to cut it from the windows folder to put it somewhere else and all applications worked except Phonex, so I think it's a part of Phonex, may be pcm means Phonex Contact Manager... I don't know, may be we should remove Phonex and reinstall it after???
I look forward to reading some smart idea... if someone gets some ;-)
Thanks
PS: I use iGo instead of Tom Tom and I think it is overwhelmingly better than the latter... with 3D building and above all the 3D landscape.
PS: if someone has a tip to avoid the lack of memory, I want well... Because despite I install all my application on the storage card, the main memory is always decreasing...

weird
It's weird, the problem looks to be fixed! But I've done nothing to fix it... weird

PROBLEMS WITH WM2005 AND XDA !!!!

I had used WM 2005 for about one week and after installing on my ppc got many unpleasent problems they are :
MEMORY PROBLEM U GET PROBLEMS OF HAVING TO LOW STORAGE MEMORY INFACT U DONNOT HAVE THAT PROBLEM !!!
1.Skyscape programs donnot work
2.Pocket breeze doesnot work
3.The network connection goes on without asking for pincode
4:memory problem
5:cannot install wm2003 SE programs to wm 2005
6hone gets extremly slow
7:NO THEMES
8:very difficult to downgrad to wm 2003 SE
9: Windows media player comes back every time when a song is changed when u have windows media player runnig at TOGGLE SCREEN mode
10: NO playlist making support
11:difficult to stop the alarm once it begins to ring.
It is nice to try once but still it is in BETA version so be carefull. If u have time i mean (HOLIDAYS) then u should try it once. May be u r the lucky one with no problems... because WM 2005 has a cooool 8) 8) 8) 8) interface and graphics.
THE MOST POSITIVE THING ABOUT IT IS THE PICTURE CALLER THAT U CAN DOWNLOAD CONTACTS WITH PICTURES TROUGH OUTLOOK....[/b]
  WAIT FOR A BETTER VERSION BUT TRY IF U HAVE THE TIME !!!!
I did not share those problems u had there.
Try downloading newer versions of the programs.
problems with WM 2005!
Hi Skenliv;
Thanks for responding but at first my storage is 11MB but whn i try to open STEDMANS medical dictionary it goes to 0 MB !!!!!! and that is why i downloaded the WM 2003 SE
to Mahmood my friend:
Based to my one week experienced with magneto:
1. First i thought it was slow but extremely faster than wm2k3se.
2. Of course we have 3rd party installer that set to the maximum OS wm2k3se but you can install some programs and runs smoothly.
3. Because the OS wm2k5 used the internal storage as a root directory then configure it to install all additional programs to storage card.
4. The bugs or error are minimal,eg:xback-simply can't detect internal memory if i'm not wrong, and one last thing i noticed that in one week two occurrence happened that the display can't start but the device is on, solution is to press the on/off switch 5secs.
5. NOT DIFFICULT TO DOWNGRADE, simply put the device in Bootloader Mode. I tried it to two times downgrading without problem.
6.Other thing is the camera display, now its half of the screen... i love the full screen in wm2k3se.
7.I don't see any problem with the WMPlayer or playlist from my device.
8. Ahhh...sound notification...hmmm its hang if you got a bulk sms.
BUT nevertheless its a great future OS that runs to our HIMALAYA!
Simply i am downgrading it because, i am making an ExtendedROM upgrade version link http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=17410&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Camera Gone...
I tried installing another Camera App that I used on wm2k3SE with no problem, it was lovely.
However it didnt work on 2k5. Now, after uninstalling it I cant get the old camera app back!
I have desperately tried to hard reset but that doesnt work in 2k5 as everything is in flash not ram!
Do I have to re-flash the rom?
Does anybody know where the RAM has gone? It seems that its using the 32meg flash for storage/programs and not the ram. Is windows still using the ram or is my nice 128meg ram wasted totally with 2k5?
UPDATE: ok, i found the camera app is still there as well as solitaire (disapeared too!), but its shortcut is missing. Also, I cant re-assign the button to anything! I set it with the standard button config app in system settings but it doesnt work. I press and nothing happens.
Any suggestions?
the camera and the recorder button doesnt work. dunno if urs to.. the camera can be found in Pictures and Video program in >>start menu>>programs
the 128 ram in 2003 used as storage/program, and using the 32 as flash. and 14+ mb as another storage.
in 2k5 the ram is not wasted but instead swapp to the flash/storage., the 32(flash)and 14+(storage) is now combined and used as the STORAGE/PROGRAM. the 128 less some used storage for Rom Files is now the Flash, now these makes the 2k5 faster than the 2003SE. incridibly fast.. just keep ur running programs stop. since we have limited STORAGE/PROGRAM.
>>correct me guys if am wrong.

How to get more program memory (RAM)

I have to admit that it was by mistake (actually I was looking to get rid of the t-mobile phone skin) that I stumbled over a nice way to get 10MB more program memory out of the MDA Pro:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Phone\Skin
"Enabled"
Change from "1" to "0"
as a result of that, you cannot make videocalls anymore, but you can change this setting back within 2 minutes...(resco reg editor brings up the latest entry at startup so its right there, and then warm reset) and the ugly t-mobile skin is gone and replaced by the original nice blue windows skin.
I also squeezed 3 MB more by installing the ext.ROM of the qtek instead the one of t-mobile, since qtek is just 0.5MB vs 3.5MB from t-mobile. I did not really find a difference in performance.
Does anyone know of any similar "simple" tricks that would release more memory? at what ever price, but everyone has different needs, so it may be an option for some people?
check the WIKI!!! weve added alot of WM5 reg tweaks to it now, mainly making teh phone to what was expected when getting it out of the packaging!!
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Registry
Actually I have (and that is where the the phone skin thing comes from)
but it did not mention that not only you loose the skin but also the video phone feature and gain 10MB..so actually I am wondering if this happened to me only because I am using the combination of t-mobile ROM and qtek ext.ROM??
and then: none of the reg hacks in wiki seem to free up some RAM (at least as far as I can tell..but I really am just a little better reg. user, I cannot write one line of code...)
When you say your program memory increased by 10 Mb, does it mean that you now have 55 Mb of memory avalable?
I have a Jasjar and i recently hard-reset my device. When the Ext.Rom was about to install, i soft-reset the device. My device i now 40% faster, and i am NOT exaggerating. All the bloatware from i-mate didn't get installed which is perhaps the reason the Jasjar is working as fast as any other device, SIMPLY SUPERB.
@Andy,
When i go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Phone\Skin ", i get 2 folders with further sub folders and one entry.
The 2 folders are:
1) Dialer (with further subfolders such as Landscape and Portait etc)
2) Progress
The last entry available is "default which has no value set".
I don't see any entry that plainly says "Enabled". Solution?
I've been harping on about the curse of the phone dialer skin since writing VJBigPhone. I was forced to install the skin etc for compatibility, and it makes such an enormous difference, slows things down so much. If you don't care for the bubbly buttons, remove it ASAP. You'll have much faster screen rotations and generally feels snappier.
Also clears up unsightly rashes
V
Trust me, after resetting the device prior to Ext.Rom installation, my Jasjar is now BLAZING fast and in now way is this an exaggeration.
@universaldoc:
you see, I have two more entries on that page. below this default string comes the dword "enabled" entry that has to be switched from 1 to 0. and below that one comes the string phcanhtc.dll
What I am observing, is: I did an installation prior to this one, with no ext ROM. that gave me the same amount of program memory as I am having now. the difference is only, that now I have some functions that were missing when I did not install ext rom, for instance I did not have the voice commands. and also not the video calling, same as now.
So what I think is: since you did not install the ext ROM, maybe that is the reason why you do not have these registry entries....because there is nothing to disable, since it was not installed at all? what do i know...lol..
and to answer your other question: my MDA Pro has 50MB of program memory, this value remains unchanged. But, with the skin enabled, I had 17MB (!) after warm reset...(1900 contacts, a few today plug.ins)...and it was hardly viable. And now i have 27....so much better.
Also: i have the latest (german) t-mobile rom (1.20), i find it much more stable than the first one which was terrible. and the qtek wasn't bad either.
(german version too)
Well after taking a rough guess into what all the bmp's are for the dialler and that awquard quickdial pad thing i get around 1.4mb of images the the portrait and landscape backdrops 500k between them, shame they aint removed totally!! that would give 2mb more rom to use.
Someones got to sort a nbf editor out! *wink plz!!! i'd really like to be able to make a rom with all MY apps and layout in it
phcanhtc.dll is surlly whats causing it, what else does that call on, can anyone dicect it?
I also tried a rotate whilst on the phone screen and its dam near instantanious
and tbh i actually quite like this skin, simple, does what it says on the tin.
I use pocket informant 2005 for dialling out normally non frequent numbers, and use the phone app to just do most common numbers from the call history.
non the less its an odd way to get more performance, i like it
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the response.
You might be absolutely right. Since i didn't install the Ext. Rom in the first place, i don't have these entries. Also, at present, i have 27Mb of program memory free which is exactly what you have I was thinking that you actually got 37Mb of memory free which IMO would be Fan-bloody-tastic!!!
Thanks anyways.

Hi AndyME
Thanks for this tip. I applied this to my Dopod 900 (Universal sold in Singapore) and my RAM increased from 20M to 27M.
I might just do a hard reset and then follow universaldoc's suggestion of soft-resetting before any Dopod bloatware installs.
On the whole I am happy with the performance of this device as it is now, especially since I upgraded the Radio to 1.60.00.
i a mglad it was useful for you. you can always check the difference between this way and the reset as per universaldoc and see what suits you better.
Hard-resetted my jasjar
Soft-resetted before extRom installation
Result is: everything is working better, from signal level, to phone calling, to internet browsing. Thanks for the tip!
I'm interested to know you guys. I've always done the ext rom skip, but do you find it has any effect on your use of Voice Command. I'm suspicious why someone who didn't do the skip, but is using the same headset, doesn't have the problem I have, whereby the audio gateway is left open and I can't close it by pressing the headset button.
V
when I once skîpped ext rom, i noticed that voice command seemed not to have been installed (at least I did not see it in the programs)
now, that i just disable the phone skin, i feel i get all the benefits the others are reporting, but i have full voice control support.
but i have installed a qtek ext rom on a t-mobile rom, as mentioned above, and the qtek is just 500 kB while t-mobile is 3.5MB
so it is probably anyway difficult to say what is the content of the various ext roms, they can be quite different i would guess...
I have actually 30mb on reset, if I disable my auto starts, it drops down to 26mb on boot up when I am running:
1. M$ Voice Command (cant get rid of the old, but dont use it)
2. SPB PP (beta 3.1), SPB Diary (latest), and SPB Weather
These are my today plugins and startup folder.
I also skipped the extended rom entirely, and then selectively installed the bits I wanted using total commander to copy the specific extended rom items i wanted, and the phone wasnt one of them, I dont know anybody with the video bit anyway.
Dont use the antivirus...
I think your bluetooth problem might be rectified by te .cab noted as SSD BTUR_Patch_for_BT.
Without the extended rom, and few of the other registry tweaks, I get awesome memory, awesome startup, awesome screen rotations, never hangs except for 3rd party apps, never misses an sms, rings at the beginning of the first ring.
Yes, I agree, the phone video things sucks heaps of resources, skip it if you dont use it.
Mind you, after a day of hardwork, wifi, internet, lots of mail and playing, it does drop down towards the 20 - 15mb mark, but overall, I am happy with it...
So in summary, just skip the rom entirely, and consider just your bluetooth patch file.
simon, what other registry tweaks are you recommending?
Hi all,
allow me to jump in on this subject. Just did another hard-reset this morning to build a new system fromscrap as I had a huge problem (memory was used by whatever and I did not get further then the today screen).
I am using the Jasjar 1.13.53 WWE and have an empty ExtROM. I noticed that if I only install the .cab for BT (SSD_BTUR_Path_For_BT_Cannot_Initial.sa) I get stuck without the smart-dialing. For me it only starts working if I install to more .cab files :
Signed_eCall_vMail.sa and
Default_Enable_VT_RTPlugin_0727_2_signed
I am having a system which has 30 M free on startup, but only until I start using ASync to get my contacts and calender in, the system immediately drops down to 24MB after that.
Do You guys know another way of getting the smart-dialling working except for the above mentioned .cab-files ? I do not need the video-call at all, wouldn't miss is at all, so would very much like to get more speed excluding it at all. On the other hand I do not like the original dial-skin and would like to overwrite it with the ones from Vodafone.
Is such combination possible ?
Ruud
Ruud, I am afraid, I cannot help you..but it is always so frustrating to get no replies...
i have a VPA iV too (MDA Pro was lent for 3 months only and i will have to return it), i understand what you are talking about, the voda skin is sooooo cool...i asked VJ and he told me that:
"You can grab themes by find the *.tsk files in the \windows\ folder. While you're there, grab all the *.gifs and *.bmps that you can. You should be able to reassemble all the themes from there."
since this was only yesterday, i have not had the time yet to do it. i will try though.
also: on buzzdev.net there is a downloadable skin that is basically the voda skin..unfortunately when i installed it over the default windows skin (the naked blue one) it did not really work. try for yourself...
I have so far kept the vodafone installation as is, it has a very small ext rom of just 2-300 kB, and just removed the skin enable command in the registry which brought 10MB same as on the MDA Pro. (and I do not see the beautiful phone skin anymore...
Why actually did you not keep the voda installation? I think the new (german) t-mobile 1.20 is more stable, but it is definitely better than the old t-mobile was. is it your feeling that jasjar is better than voda?
Hi AndyME,
First of all, I have a vodafone because of my contract with them in Germany, but I am actually a Dutch guy living in Russia. There is no need for the German language, actually I do not like any other language then English for everything in electronics, specially software.
My hope that the device would be multiple language was gone at the moment I unpacked my package. So I used the website here to change to english.
I have all the .gif, .jpg and .bmp from the vodafone installation kept for backup purposes, but had to change them to fit to the iMate size. Also not all the transperency is working like I wanted.
Do You know the .cab file necesssary for just changing the skin ?
It is quite some work to install each of them seperately, softreset and if they do not do the trick, do a hard-reset before You try the next. I found out that the combination of the two I mentioned before helps, but maybe I need this DiscoButton as well ?
I have asked this question before, but did not get an answer, does somebody know what thedifferent .cab-files are for ?

Memory issues with "home-cooked" ROMS?

Firstly I am not having a go at any of the ROM creators here - just trying to understand what is going on with my device.
I have O2 Orbit, have used O2-WM5, B&B and now O2-WM6. Using Navigon 6.2 installed on SD card.
I am route planning for holidays and have a route that is a 3 hour route with 1 waypoint. I created this route when running O2-WM5. With B&B i cannot get the saved route to load, and often I will get a memory issue and be asked to close other apps (normally phone is the only other open). Tried using overlocker in case it was processor issue - no joy.
I reverted to O2 - WM5 and it works, upgraded to O2-WM6 it works. What is the difference with the B&B Rom? Is this related to Ext-ROM or lack of? Do all the HTC-home and theme take too much memory?
Thoughts and advise appreciated - and if there is a nice looking WM6 ROM that someone can recommend I would appreciate a link!!

Thoughts about Navigon on Mobiles
Hi!
I am facing the same problems (Navigon 6.1 on an O2MiniS, WM5). Only the simplest functions work -- as long as nothing else is done with the phone.
I have not had a chance to try this out, but this is advice I got:
a) use a faster (mini)sd-card. Amongst others, Transcend sells fast cards. Navigon does not advice doing this, but tells me I can try.
b) remove all superfluous maps from the card.
c) install the program so it runs from your mobile -- not from the card.
Let us know how you are faring!
Bob
Okay so this may be a Navigon issue rather than WM5 / WM6 / B&B ROM. I am going to try tomorrow to flash a clean rom, install no programs nor synch with laptop and see what happens then.
Currently with O2-WM6, synched (500 contacts / 100 email) the route planning "works" after a 60 sec delay before completing calcs from point a to b and then again from b to c..!!
Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks
Eoin
Hello,
i have the same Problem. At all cooked ROM with more RAM MN6 are not Display the Route and crash. With orginal ROM and ROM with low RAM MN6 perfekt work.
Is there already a solution?
heross
I have never been able to resolve it. As a workaround I now use Hibernate before MN6 which seems to clear enough memory. If you find any answers let me know.

I've been playing with various satnavs over the weekend, all on the standard Dopod WM6 ROm... the following all worked, using UK maps, and planned a route from Suffolk to Lancashire (250 miles):
TomTom 6.02 and 6.03
Navigon MN6
Route66
iGo MyWay
My thoughts on them are as follows:
Navigon: Too slow, graphics unclear, not enough features
iGo: Not bad, but still junt missing a few bits
Route66: A serious contender, but you cant view your route easily or manually modify it or avoid areas. Speed Camera warnings are absolutely brilliant though, and performance is fast.
TomTom: Definitely the best overall - if it had free traffic and speed cam implemetation lice Route66, it would be a complete no brainer. As it is, the ability to avoid sections of routes etc and subscribable traffic if needed make it my personal preference.
If you need info on how to get hold of TomTom, PM me!
try that one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316058&highlight=donothing.zip
it worked for me.
good luck
THX,
cleaninstall of MN6.0-> deinstall->update to MN6.2->install MN6.2 have solve the Problem.
MEMORY error is definitly a ROM version problem. Try a fast ROM like Vanilla 2.0 or Stripped HTC WWE ROM --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334810
Navigon need a lot of memory ~about 15mb free to run. I don't know if it's fixed with last update. I think that they are going to build more and more PNA and less PDA softwares updates. If you can try UPX4PDA That can compress your .EXE and .DLL, I 've done it for TOMTOM, .EXE ist now 920 Kb (before 2,30 Mb).
Anyway Navigon and iGO look nicer than TOMTOM, but TOMTOM run faster on PDA (with 200Mhz Processors). Gonna see with next generation with VGA and 400 Mhz proc.
hi,
I am readin with interest your post on the UPX4PDA.....
where do I find this app and does it improve noticably the performance of the application??
UPX4PDA really no matter for RAM problem.
Because once you launch your apps, it self decrompress it into memory and restoring it's original size.
With this tool, you'll only gain spaces on ROM and maybe quickest launch.
Only space and no speed gain.

An Xtream Comeback....

My god its been a while since i was here!!.... Been so busy my phone stopped having its Roms changed more than my underware and became simply my phone..... BUT now iv forgotten how to do this shiz and i feel so incredibly lost on here and my BIG problem and the reason why i came back
.......Apple iphone white is making me so excited i think a little bit of wee came out! it looks nice and its SO much faster then my Artemis BUT i love my Artemis but i want an iphone ARRRRRG!!!..... i know... Ill go on XdaDev and see if thoes clever F***ERS have been able to make it Run any faster. im using Artemis Touch 4.01 Full with cube and im also using Ultimate launch wich is making thigs quite laggy any ideas of how i can rekindle my love for my phone?
...more or less the same here: since changing to tomtom 7 my orig. htc rom is a bit sluggish!
i am back to the good old days with meschle: vanilla 4.01!!! changed radio to Artemis 2.98.90 gsm radio though, since all the new cooks dont seem to know about the downs of porting radio roms from other machines to the artemis!
its been a while back too, when we found the battery drain on most cooked roms resulting from any version above the mentioned radio! 2.98.90 is the last released for artemis- often other versions result in a constant polling for radio-signal, thus draining battery enormously--and spreading more radiation than needed.
greetz
Strange, don't need anything faster for my P3300, i use gsm, gps, wifi and no delays at all.
I have YuE_WM6.1_v4.4_LiteSE_WWE rom and installed a lot of extra's on the storage card.
TomTom is not so spectacular anymore (graphicwise), i use IGO8 (3D buildings) and rom fast enough (standard 201MHZ).
You can always tweak it up with batterystatus to 247mhz but what goes slow?
What do you do with your Artemis, video or graphic processing ???
Please note that faster processorsettings = faster battery drain.
In past i had Qtek 2020i & Eten G500 (both +-400 a 500mhz) but don't miss the speed...
Don't follow the hype, Artemis is best price/quality all in one at the moment.
At least we have a mini-sd extension slot and gps, that's a minimum
If you want an iphone for the 3D interface, install htc rom with 3D Cube & set to 247mhz.
The Iphone layout gets boring with the icon startup screen is not so 'funky' as the SPB Mobile Shell 2.0 with Diamondskin & Samuraiweather on our Artemis
You can install also an iphone skin, iphone s2u2, ... ringtone,... so that it looks the same softwarewise, but it's not so spectacular as you might expect...
Be individual, install your own rom, todayskin, programs and make a backup of your own perfect setup is the message !

Between YuE_WM6.1_v4.4_LiteSE_WWE and Vanilla 4.02, which one is better ?
No idea, i took Yue's cause it was a newer version, and if i'm not mistaken it had less pre-installed stuff. I want to start from scratch with the lightest rom and install SPB Mobile Shell, and all other tools I like, no unescessary stuff to save program memory & ram. I did install the latest RADIO for best battery/consumption settings...
In past i used the 4.02 from Meschle & tested the Oops black, but don't like the HTC Home plugin and the diamond-plugin... SPB Mobile Shell with diamond skin 2.1 is really the coolest
Yue's extraclean should be the lightest, but i didn't get it too work, cannot flash it through windows cause romsize lower than normal.
SDHC Card flashing is not possible (tried it with an SD also but no succes). But i'm satisfied with my current rom for a long time.

try the following in order to get sd card flashing to work:
run uspl!!!!
than:
quoted from ...."i dont remember"
"1) install WM5torage in your pda
2) start the program
3) deselect all voices in the panel (expecially Removable Class)
4) connect your pda with PC via USB
In this way windows read the SecureDigital as a fisical disk, so you can create, resize and delete partitions
5) in your PC right-click on Computer, then select Manage
6) Select Disk Manager and then delete existent partition
7) create a new partition with max size 256MB
8) format this partition in FAT32
Now your SD is ready to be used for flash!!!"
Thing that made me drop YuE_WM6.1_v4.4 is that friggin` russion stuff.
yeah, u can change dialer and pads, but it keeps contacts search in russian
apart from that, my original htc wm6.0 rom was definately not the choice for tomtom7 somehow it felt... sluggish!
both YuE_WM6.1_v4.4 and vanilla 4.01 ( my all-time classic from the good old days!!!) both do the job quite zippy--so i agree: stay with the artemis, forget about yuppie-style ipone!

oh I just known that vanilla 4.01 and 4.02 use the same OS built. I uploaded vanilla 4.01 in the collection topic. I hate diamond black skin black GUI on 4.02 but now I finished setup all my programs and lazy to go back 4.01
Specialist ROM cookers never make clean ROM. It's hard to upgrade builtin 3rd party softwares in the future. Not everyone install new ROM every month. We want to install one ROM and forgot it. Use it 2- 5 years without hardreset.
If I am ROM cooker, I will make clean ROM and the optional all-in-one.cab. An optional All-in-one.cab can install in one click later. These can be easy upgrade or uninstall in the future.

nice idea! just to let you know on that matter: all pdaviet roms are missing a vital part, this makes it impossible to re-cook them!

Manilla2d trinity resources hog?

Hi, everyone on the forum, I was wondering if you were having trouble making manilly2d work smoothly on your trinities. My trinity becomes relatively sluggish and free memory drops pretty soon. When trying to use gps software it locks, freezes etc. Same with Opera browser.
How are your Trinities handling great looking manilla2d?
Use one of the ROMs with Manila2D cooked into. Its far better than installing it afterwards.

I Confirm!!!!
I was wondering if we could get Manilla running faster converting Manila2D.exe (1MB) or its dlls into module...

ROMS with Manila cooked in work only slightly slower, not enough to bother me at all. I think it all depends on what 3rd party software you then install on top.
The trick is either finding a Manila ROM which more or less everything you need it already (like Ervius's ROMS) or naked ROMS which have only the minimum (like Chalid's ROMS).
Also, I recommend using Mpenguin14's "M2DC (Manilla 2D Customizer)" to get rid of the Manila tabs at that the bottom that you don't really need. This reduces memory consumption and therefore improves performance. Some cooks are putting it into their ROMS, but there is a cab you can download too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427392

Thanks for all the advice I allready noticed beter performance with album and audio player tab turned off but nevertheless it seems slower.

I gave up on manilla and htc home. The clock can be replaced by PDC, weather by spb weather(there's probably a lighter solution though), app launcher by the start menu(people usually don't use a wide variety of apps, start menu can list the latest which will do just fine), sms/mms/calendar/tasks by the respective native plugins.
All the other apps are cute but useless, like, you already have a speed dial on the phone app, as for media just launch the respective apps.
manilla on trinity
Hi, I am happily running chalid's rom with Manilla2d - meaning that it runs correctly but can become quite slow (for example, A2DP skips if i keep wifi or other programs in the background). The problem, in my opinion, is not Manilla but...our trinity. The low amount of RAM makes any program which is consuming memory running slowly and/or lacking responsiveness. Try Igo8, for example, and plan a long route...this is true beyond manilla, and the less memory you have free, the more sluggish it becomes...
I came to the empirical conclusion that TNYYNT Roms are faster simply since he is keeping memory consumption/allocation low, and this is why Chalid's 0.8 is faster than any other manilla2d i've tried. For example, i was not able to run tomtom efficiently on ervius' rom - but it ALMOST works correctly with chalid's (which is based on TNYYNT as you know).
My conclusion: upgrade to touch HD ! it is the obvious way to improve the trinity: better screen, better CPU, better RAM....
lately i been using PDAviet ROM .44 and the manila user interface is relly fast and pleasant to use - the only think that I'm craving for is more RAM in the device
All is well if one application is running but have a few open and the sistem will complain
One thing that I see with this ROM is that if you start a memory intensive application - like opera 9 or your tube or tom tom it will close the ManilaUI temporarly and restart it automatically when you close the application so everything runs fast - but only one thing at the time

Hi Pzucchel.
Thanks for your advice the other day on sd cards.
I have a new Kingston 4GB Micro SD (SDHC) Card coming tomorrow and going to reinstall Tomtom 6 onto it. Then I have to pick a ROM! I love the Manila 2D interface, have tried practically all of the current ROMS, but I can't have Tomtom letting me down.
When you say Tomtom ALMOST works on Chalid's, what happened? Did it come out of the program half way through a journey?
And on Ervius' Rom... were you not even able to start Tomtom?
Mattster.
I switched back to a non manilla2d rom and my trinity is flying again! Windows are opening fast and overall performance is better, igo 8 works without crashing. Manilla looks great but I'm gonna hold back for now! Bye all
64M Ram a problem, but here is a work around
pzucchel has raised the main issue- it's not the code, the ROM the M2D or iGO8. Our Trinity is only 64M RAM, and with operating system, if we have 25-27M free RAM we are lucky. Running M2D will normally eat up 10M or so more. With careful memory management it will not slow down our phone. however it will not allow to have M2D as a today plug-in and run iGO8...
Having M2D in the cooked ROM helps a bit as far as speed (not significant) but will not help in memory management. So that was the *****ing part of the post. now let's have a work around. It is not a solution- yet it will allow us to enjoy M2D and iGO8 without getting crazy, and without a need to reset the phone 7 times a day...
1. Install a naked ROM. Look for ones that allow 25M free RAM after installation. There are few of them. If they are naked+M2D and leave 20M free, it is good enough. Having M2D in the ROM means no M2D updates possible. Having M2D installed manually means lots of work and a bit slower performance- each one knows what's best for himself.
2. install SKTOOLS 4.4.1 (Buy it! it worth the investment). Optimize to maximum memory. Our good old trinity works fast enough even with this setup. Also- turn shadow services on to free RAM. Don't mess up with anything else there. We are after more free RAM ONLY !
3. Install mToday. It's a small nifty free tool, that allows the user to switch easy between today plug-ins. Set M2D on one screen, and iGO8 on the 2nd one. Assign a key for mToday so by a push of a button you can switch M2D off and get iGO8 plug in on... For the lazy ones I am attaching it.
4. Make sure the following lines are in your sys.txt in the IGO8 folder. I mean the one in main memory under program files, not the SD folder, although for recovery purposes, make them both identical:
[debug]
cache=2048
reserve_memory=1500000
[navigation]
sim_speed_factor=3
True- it still will not allow using TTS , but that is kind of pushing the limits of the phone. I could use TTS if I turn the phone off, kill 3G and GPRS, push no mail, etc. but after all if I wanted a GPS device only, I could have bought one..
5. For TomTom users- same thing - kill M2D using mToday and keep running it. I did not try TT7 but TT6 was very much an easy run on the trinity, before I moved to iGO8.
Special thanks to the cookers, current and the ones who left this forum, for their dedication, time spent for this community, and insight. I am merely a tester, and I hope this post will make some other trinity users happy campers.
Cheers
BigE
I had no problems running the WWE evirus rom with M2D and Tomtom7

I have no problem running tomtom7 and igo8 with chalid's 0.8rom.
but before i run igo, i have to close all running apps first.
like bigE mentioned, invest in SKTools. It's a great utility. I have its "free ram" apps as one of my shortcut. i always run it bfore i run any gps apps.
iGO8 and M2D- is it really running together?
rockuman_ex,
Yes, iGO may seem to work with while M2D is on, but, is it really? Here are some observations:
1. Choose to calculate a 1,000 mile away destination when they both are on - even with SKTOOLS I am running out of memory for iGO.
2. Have them both run, and try answering a call at the same time. Even with 1.5M reserved for 'non iGO' use in the sys.txt - most likely phone will freeze.
I have no experience with TT7. I have abandoned TT for iGO because I am travelling to destinations I could not have maps for TT in the TT6 era. I have got spolied by iGO and can't go back to TT, although I have to admit TT is making more sense for the trinity. But like all of us- I want it all...
I regretfully think that in the near future I will go with another HTC phone, waiting for AT&T to offer the HD here in the US. I have spent around $700 for the trini about 18 months ago, no realizing 64M will kill me so quick. Oh well- that is what we call experience, learning from mistakes...

I'd say these days, 18 months with one phone is pretty good
