[GUIDE] The ultimate Guide to Speed Up your Hero "safely"!! (any ROM) - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Hi all..
Are you ready to unleash the hidden Power of your HTC Hero??
many have used CPUOverclock, but faced a lot problems regarding Battery life, right? well, here is how you can balance it. and make the battery stay longer with the same performance
you also can configure Android internal task killer to boost your ROM even more http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622666
NOTE: this guide requires that your phone is rooted !!
Step 1: you need 2 applications "Overclock widget" and "Spare Parts" << download both from Market.
Step 2: add "Overclock widget" to any homescreen. click on it then click on "Advanced Settings" and set the Frequencies as following:
Screen On:
Max: 528000
Min: 528000
check the "differ freq Screen .." button.
Screen Off:
Max: 384000
Min: 245760 << you can put it to 128000 to save more battery, but lagges Music sometimes.
go down the list and click on "Save"..
Finally, Step 3: (not needed on 2.x ROMs)
go to the app "Spare Parts" and find "End Button Behavior" and set it to "Go to Sleep"..
you are done
Explanation: HTC made the CPU at 384 MHz and automatically overclock to 528 MHz if needed (both screen ON or OFF). this actually affects the Usability of the Phone
this method will make the CPU at best when screen is ON, and saves a looooot of battery when screen is OFF.
Statistics: using SoftWeg Benchmarking app (in the market) :
Stock ROM 2.73:
different tests:
CPU total score: 125-130
Modaco ROM 3.0:
different tests:
CPU total score: 121-130 << that's why I changed back to rooted Stock 2.73
Stock 2.73 with this method:
different tests:
CPU total score: 170-178 !!!
kaguDroid 1.2.1 with this method:
different tests:
CPU total score: 220-282 !!!
I used it on KaguDroid1.2 and the Live wallpapers performed better and no lagges .. but I forgot to take benchmarks numbers
GPU benchmarks were improved too, but I focused on CPU more.
I'm in the process of making an Eclair ROM with SenseUI (that supports Arabic) and if someone could help me make the Kernel perform like this by default without this method, please PM me ASAP !!!

the good app name is Overclockwidget and needs root

Another Tip if you are scared of overclocking or alongside overclocking
@ MaXo64 - can you add this to the first post please?
& ALL
You can also do what is on this thread (by androcheck). No overclocking required (you can if you really want to) and it makes your UI SUPER-FAST even the custom rom makers are now adding it to their configs.

didn't Lox fixed the battery drain in 1.2.1??

I can see an instant improvement with these settings! (I'm using MCR 3.1)
Thanks dude!

when i first started this on my MCR3.2 Hero, settings were were you suggested to be. is this normal? so i didn't have to set anything.
actually this does nothing whatever freq i set.

true, but make sure to set the "Spare Parts" thingy, so the CPUOverclock know that your phone is really in "Sleep" mode. or your battery will drain..

total CPU score here 279.571 (using kagudroid)

So, if we compare this:
Screen On:
Your Setting: 528 MHz
HTC default: 384-528 MHz
Screen Off:
Your Setting: 245-384 MHz
HTC default: 384-528 MHz
So with your settings, we can only save battery if screen is off? If screen is on, with your setting, i need more battery than the default value? But it runs evertime at full speed...
Am I right with this?

You're absolutely correct . Yup it just turns on full powern screen-on and saves battery when screen off.

Total CPU score MCR3.1: 170

My score is WITH "minfree" tweak.

Spare parts is not working on 2.1 roms......

I have 145 with Modaco 3.1

Okay, thanks, i wanted to be sure
But, how can I test, if the "clocking" works correct? Because the Widget doesn't work really good (i read this in the forum) and with screen off i can't see the widget^^

exactly, but you get the advantage of no lagging caused by auto-clocking as in HTC settings.
experience this for two days and you'll see .. you'll love your phone a LOT

[Q] Best Kernel on G2 with MIUI

Trying to find out to anyone using or not using MIUI which kernel is the best for the G2, i am also trying to find out what SetCPU profiles work best with that kernel from personal experience.
Curious myself.
*bump*
I'm on the latest Pershoot and battery and performance is some much better than stock kernel. In fact, battery life is possibly better than Sense! I OC'd to 825-1497 MHz screen on and 245-368 with the screen off. I get the occasional (once in the few days I've been running the ROM) refusal to wake up, but I heard that's a bug in CM (which MIUI is based off) to do with OCing + screen on/off animations. I did, however, get tons of freezes and reboots when my maximum frequency was set at 1516MHz, which seems to be above the threshold my phone can take.
Anyway, that's my experiences, YMMV!
Hope I helped

I have been in MIUI_1.07.15_OsiMood v1.0 (just flashing to 1.2)
atleast in 1.0 FM-radio on desire z didn't work whit Streamline5 and Pershoot 2.6.35.13 kernels. on default kernel it works.
i dont think i'm going to try out those kernels in 1.2... any kernel suggestions whit smartass/conservative governors and hopefully working FM-Radio?
Which version of MIUI are your running?
I'm currently running Carpes' Miui Version, "Light Gets Lighter"
The kernel I use is Eugenes' Streamline5 Kernel which can be found here Streamline5
He has a MIUI version but for some reason doesn't run well so just download the Original.
Here is the download link if you have trouble finding it > kernel download <
As for Setcpu settings
Max/Min
Main:
1000/800, smartass
Profiles:
Screen Off: 384/245, smartass
I only find the need for a screen off profile because I like my phone kept on low hz and it's pretty much the same as battery charging profiles if you have the same hz
Its also recommended not to underclock lower then 245 as it will cause a lock up or freeze being unable to wake up due to slow processing speed
1 Day, 13 Min, 56 Seconds = 21% Battery Left
Total about 1 hour browsing internet, maybe 20min total of youtube videos and moderate texting

Happy to hear and yes, Streamline5 is awesome!
If Both our reviews still don't help then maybe this will. Another great thing about Streamline5 is that it will still run smooth even if you leave it clocked at just 800 alone and maybe squeeze a little more juice out .
Reason I scale it to 1000 is I like the little speed boost it gives me
Yes, got Tiamat kernel runing in my MIUI, and looks like everything is working fine, even FM-radio...
has all the necessary governors, and goes up to 2ghz

[LIST] My "CPU tuner" recommandations

So many people on these forums ask about the best CPU tuner profiles to set on their Desire Z that I thought i'll make a thread here to refer to.
Note: I've been using and experimenting with CPU tuner for 5 months now, and i faced all the known issues before i came to these settings. Also, I have been listening to everyone's remarks. So i think it works the best. Now don't blame me if your phone turns into a fireball after you applied these settings (well, it's rare though...).
If you don't have it, you can download "cpu tuner" from the market. I'm using the 2.1.2 version.
Tips first:
You need a ROOTED phone to operate CPU tuner properly.
You'd better get a good kernel which allows a wide frequency range and the basic governors.
Read the help that's included with the program (Menu -> Help).
Unless you really need it, do not run the Check System Capabilities.
Not all phones can handle high CPU speed, just experiment. It's mostly a matter of luck.
The purpose of CPU tuner is to allow you to save battery life while getting the best of your phone when you need it. It allows you to change two important things in your phone, defined in "profiles":
Governor: the "brain" that decides when to lower or raise frequency, depending on what you do
Frequencies: the min/max frequencies the governor can choose between.
These profiles are applied depending on your battery status. Battery remaining life is the variable for "triggers", which fire the profile changes.
Usually, you want your phone to give you the best of its power, as long as possible, so i defined only two triggers: one for "Battery is fine, thanks" and one for "Battery is at agony, stop it now!" (below 20%).
Here we go:
Before you start, go to settings, and turn profiles off.
Virtual governors
In the virtual governors tab, we define the 3 ones we need:
VG: Screen Off: "interactive" governor
VG: Normal: "ondemand" governor, with threshold up at 95
VG: Powersave: "conservative" governor with thresholds up at 97 and down at 90
Profiles
Now, let's set 3 profiles for the different cases:
Screen off: Governor "VG: Screen Off", frequencies 691-806Mhz
Normal: Governor "VG: Normal", frequencies 806-1210Mhz
Powersave: Governor "VG: Powersave", frequencies 599-806Mhz
In all cases, let all services on "unchanged" unless you want some specific behavior.
Triggers
Ok, now that we have everything we need, let's say what to trigger, and when:
Let 2 triggers:
1.Battery Good
Level: 100
On Battery: Normal
Screen Locked: Screen off
On Power: Normal
(optional but advised) Call in progress: Normal
(optional) Battery hot: Powersave
2.Battery Low
Level: 20
On Battery: Powersave
Screen Locked: Screen off
On Power: Normal
(optional but advised) Call in progress: Normal (this is important for call stability)
(optional) Battery hot: Powersave
You're ready to go now! But we can check some options if you'd like to:
User interface:
Be sure not to enable the Calculate power usage.
Also, here you can remove the (annoying) notifications, just let the status bar icon.
Profiles and triggers
Remember this optional "Call in progress" option? Here you cna enable it.
Service Switches
It's a good idea to check the "Manual service change" box, not to be bothered when you manually turn some connection on and it goes because you run low on battery.
Buy me a beer
Honestly, you can buy him two ones...
And to thank me, just click on the "Thank" button on this forum
When you're done, turn profiles on again.
Tell me how you do with these settings!
hi. i have a desire z running virtuous 1.0.2 with advanced kernel 2.2.0.
i follow you settings and after 2 days of use i've got the screen wake up issue on incoming call.
there's something i missed?
Are you using the Call in progress settingon every trigger ?
yes, i've set both to the normal profile as in your guide.
now i've disabled the option in settings and hope that works...
Yeah, try without this setting.
If you keep having the issue, try to raise the min frequency of screenoff.
ok! now i've found a good config!
i've increased screen off min freq to 691 and enabled again the call in progress option.
if the call in progress option is disable, the phone locks during a call and the proximity sensor won't work anymore (for example if you wish to end a call).
i hope this will help some other users!
thank you for help and guide!
Please give again a feedback in some days, and then i'll add your findings in the 1st post.
Thanks
after 3 days of usage i can say that this is the right config.
no more wake up / in call locking / end call wake issues!
Alright and you're using interactive for screenoff, right? I'll edit my first post
You guys minimum frequencies look a bit too high, I have mine set to 245 minimum and it gets me much better battery life. I would also suggest using SetCpu (it's free for registered xda members). Just a thought though.
Edit: CPUTuner can also cause issues with any rom that isn't CM7; and also on CM7 under the right circumstances.

@Ninj: yes, that's right!
@PaganAng3l: any suggestion is welcome! why don't you post an example of your settings?
Great little write up. I look forward to setting it up after work!
My profiles in SetCPU are pretty basic, but I get great preformance and around 30 hours of battery with moderate/heavy usage. Here are my profiles:
Temp > 42.0 C = 806 max / 245 min
Governor = Conservative Priority = 95
Charging = 1209 max / 245 min
Governor = On Demand Priority = 90
Battery < 25% = 806 max / 245 min
Governor = Powersave Priority = 85
Battery < 50% = 1017 max / 245 min
Governor = On Demand Priority = 80
Battery < 101% = 1209 max / 245 min
Governor = On Demand Priority = 75
That's it! I don't personally experience "wake lag" or a blank screen with incoming calls with these settings, but if you do simply bump up your minimum frequencies to above 300 mhz.

powersave? i can't find that governor...
i've set it on conservative.
i'm trying your settings but i still have the wake up issue.
now i'm going create a screen off profile.
if even this won't help, i'll try to increase the minimum freq to 300mhz.
however i have to say that this setup really help to increase battery life.
after 2 day of moderate usage i'm still at 66%!!

Your kernel may not support a "powersave" governor. I just flashed pershoot's kernel and I no longer have it. Try bringing all of your max frequencies to 1171mhz or lower. This helps solve the waking issue too.
Edit: having a screen off profile caused me no end of trouble. It may not be an issue for you but I thought I would share.

Yes that is normal. However since you're an xda member you can get the app SetCPU for free and I believe it's superior to cpu tuner. Just search the forum for "setcpu download" and it should turn up.

It's my xperia overcloacked?

Hi!, i recently flashed my Arc (that is an prototype, a very complete prototype) to an official firmware (2.3.3).
But i have some problems, like i can't make a "factory restore" because i got a blue screen saying "aww snap ...."..
I can't unlock the bootloader, because i has tried with my code generated on SE website and i get an error message.
gingerbreak doesn't works
Super One click Doesn't works
I just can root downgrading to 2.3.2 , but when i do the update, the phone crashes with a blue screen dumping (that takes 10 minutes on finish).
I think that i never can root my xperia arc .
(if someone haves a solution please tell me )
oh yes, the question..
I have runned a benchmark tool(Quadrant Standard) and in the system info i get this CPU values:
Current freq 1024 MHz
Max freq 1024 Mhz
Min freq 122.88.
If my cpu is running on the maximum performance, that's not good for my battery life, and i can imagine that i can't down the clock if i don't root the device.
I have the same max freq. as you so it should not be overclocked and I'm not having any battery life issues.
Are you having battery life issues?
hmm nope, the battery life is about 2 or 3 days depending of the use.
The CPU clocks up as and when needed (this is called scaling), mainly it should drop to around 256mHz (i think) when not in use ad jump up to the maximum if its required, if it is at 1024 all the time it may be that there is something running ie an app that is forcing the CPU to stay up at that speed.
easy way to check cpu activity : ''cpu spy'' from market simple and does what you want

Best SetCPU Config for Desire

Hello
Does anybody use set cpu with HTC Desire ?
I would like to know wich settings work the best for you. I am trying to get the best compromise between battery life and performance.
Thanks
128MHz - 998MHz ondemand. I get more than enough life out of it. I found that if your using AOSP and not really doing much on it like just texting or calling people, capping the max to about 600MHz or 500MHz if you want, works a dream and you get even longer out of it.
Smartass is better or worse ?
I do not see any real difference between smartass and interactive in term of battery live and performance.
On demand seems to drain slightly faster than smartass.
I set my Desire to 384-1136 with interactive govenor.
I charge it once i a day each time before I go to bed anyways (sleeping time usually23.00 - 05.00), so further battery saving is not necessary to me
Edit...my normal usages are:
Syncs (no auto sync by opening):
Friendstream 4 hrs
News 4 hrs
Weather 6 Hrs
push Yahoomail
push Googlemail
push Whatsapp
push EBuddy
Active background :
Lookout antivirus
No app killer used
Phone calls : about 1-2 hrs each day
Music listening mit DSP add-on : 4 hours
Fruit ninja (man! this is addictive!) : 1 hrs
Browsing (Dolphin HD + Android market) : 2 hrs
welll....every time I charge my battery it is about 15-25% left till out of juice...if I use my phone more than those, I have to charge it earlier (more than once a day)
245 - 985 MHz Conservative give mere 36 hours power and running smooth.

For me the battery has never lasted more than a day... Even on my un-rooted one...
BTW: Battery live depends on many things
1. Your ROM and kernel
2. Your runnning application, syncs, etc.
3. your usage and settings such as cpu freq, display brightnes, airplane mode, etc.
4. Received signal quality.
5. The condition of the battery...is it top fit for example?
It is difficult to measure the battery live.
@atuladhikari : battery live has nothing to do with rooting..

I don't like using any of the other governors since I get lag. I hate lag. OnDemand gets rid of the lag for me. I've had it before where I was using smartass and it took ~30 seconds for my screen to turn back on from idle. I wasn't too impressed.
setcpu
thanks meaple for your advice
i think that set cpu is fine on "ondemand" for some roms and for others roms no
set cpu is included on oxygen settings and running well

DidI do that?....I did.... LOL.
I used to use set cpu
set a profile like
Smartass
on charge - 1113mhz
80% - 100% - 998mhz
59% - 79% - 600mhz
35% - 58% - 500mhz
Screen Off - 300mhz
Priority was higher for lower battery %
BUT I stopped using it because of the little bugs, like when it changes to 384mhz for no reason after unlocking screen
It also affects the standard script with the rom you install, so you can never uninstall it properlu, you have to do a full wipe install and never install it, until I did that my phone was always a little laggy
I prefer my phone without it Each to their own
@shankly1985 - you didn't noticed wakeup lag with 128 MHz?
I must use 245 - x MHz to properly and fast unlock my phone.

Not at all mate, I get zero lag on my phone. when I check the info on the setcpu app and time in state 128 is at 85% so my phone is using very little cpu.

CPU frequency: set to 1Ghz

Think it's good for both S8500 and S8530.
By default CPU frequency is 800Mhz on Bada 2.0
To set higher frequency, on keyboard make this code: *#197328640#
After select 8 common, 8 DVFS Configuration, 1 static level 0 (800mhz), 1 static level 0 (800mhz) and then # to validate.
If you want to go back to default, same manipulation but select 5 dynamic level.
To see frequency CPU: *#197328640# then 4, then 8, then 1.
Thanks to Badaforums.net
Advantage: You got 1Ghz CPU, what you paid for when you buy your wave.
It's a little smoother like that.
If you need much battery life, you can also underclock the speed.
Idea: What about making an app?
Larioteo if you read this post...
But this will eat my battery even faster that SHP
Thanks for the tip
Best Regards
Erm, not quite sure I understood you there. How exactly do we push the performance to 1ghz. Setting a static speed is as mylove90 points out is very bad for battery life.
Web browser seems much faster with this tip.
You can try, if you see you have problem with battery life, you go to default settings.
But you can also underclock the CPU speed if you want better battery life

Yeah, it's very nice if you know that you would be out for a day or two.
At real !!!!!!!
hmm.... after every restart you have to redo these steps, otherwise the cpu is set back to dynamic level

Check num 1 for 1ghz num2 for 800Mhz num3 for 400Mhz and 4 for 200Mhz on Menu
when you executed games 3d then he came's auto in Dynamic's mode !!!
Then maybe it's possible to make setcpu's program
