The Zune part - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

I have never seen zune, not yet because I am not living in US.
Can you use zune to play downloaded media files like mp3, flac, divx, xvid ...?
I meant, stuff you have downloaded and stored in sd card.

The Zune HD itself doesn't have an SD card, only internal storage, but yes, it plays lots of various formats.
# Audio support:
* CBR and VBR audio, up to 48 kHz sample rate
o WMA Standard up to 384 kbps (DRM protected files can be played only if purchased from the Zune Marketplace)
o WMA Pro stereo up to 768 kbps
o WMA Lossless stereo up to 768 kbps
o Unprotected AAC-LC (.mp4/.m4a/.m4b) up to 320 kbps
o MP3 up to 320 kbps
# Video support:[9]
* DVD resolution and frame rate, up to 10 Mbps bit rate, CBR or VBR for:
o H.264, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.1 + B-frames support [9]
o WMV Main and Simple Profile, Advanced profile up to Level 2.
Also, there's an update planned for later this spring to support MPEG video including XviD.

can you put downloaded media files into its internal storage and play them?
or you must get the media files from zune marketplace?

No, you can put them in internal storage. Also, the zune doesn't play flac...

You can sync your own files via the Zune desktop client, you don't have to buy stuff from them, although there's a service called Zune Pass where you can listen to music and download a certain number of titles per month.
The syncing is not as fascist as on the iPhone where the damned thing renames files, but still isn't as easy as copying files to the device (the way I do it currently with my HD2) - there's no access to ZHD's file system AFAIK. It's an ultimate annoyance I have with my wife's iPhone and I certainly hope this won't happen to WP7.

There is a reg tweak that can enable File Explorer view of the Zune on the PC. Look it up

Yes, you can put whatever you want on there (as long as it's a supported format). The only way to get it on is to use the Zune desktop software which is Windows only at the moment

Zune Pass allows for unlimited downloads per month but they are all DRMed and will cease to work if you cancel the subscription. In addition, you get 10 non-DRMed files per month that you get to keep. This option is $14.99/month. What's really cool is you can download music right from your device over WiFi (and over 3G on WP7). Since it has a built in FM radio, it can use the radio ID tags to download songs you like instantly.
The other option is to pay per track. They use the idiotic Microsoft Points that Xbox Live uses and it's 79 points per song (about $.98).
All of the non-DRM music in the store is regular ol' MP3.

the Zune devices are just like iPods they don't allow external card support. It uses the same exact media formats as iTunes. It supports the following media formats:
mp3
wma
wmv
mp4
m4a
m4b
m4v
mov
jpeg
But Zunes are REALLY good. I've had iPods and I owned a Zune 30GB and 120GB and I think the Zunes are Way better than any mp3 Apple offers excluding the iPod Touch. Where iPods have a click wheel that only operates in one direction, the Zunes have scroll pads like a laptop that has gestures that operate in 4 directions. You should check out a demo on youtube. iTunes does have more content than Zune Marketplace, but the gap is narrowing quickly. The Zune biggest point is the Zune Pass, which allows Unlimited DRM-Music downloads for only $15 a month and gives you 10 free drm-less song free every month. If you don't like that, then you can download individual albums and songs or do what I do. Remove the DRM from the Zune Pass subscription. If you dont' want to buy from Zune, you can still download from Amazon or even Itunes and configure you folders to where ever your music and videos folder are at. That's what I did in the beginning.
Here's comparison pics of the iPod Classic and Zune 120GB.

Thanks guys, I got the idea how it works.
I am not a music guy, so I almost never intentionally play music on my phone.
And I don't own any dedicated mp3 player device.
I do own iPod shuffle (got it for free from promotion), but I left it in a drawer (I forgot where it is now) because it was quite confusing to install and I hate iTunes. I was trying to copy my mp3 and could not figure it out.
Most probably I will use the Zune part to play recorded videos from the WP7S phone device. I hope Microsoft would expand its video/audio codec later.

Coreplayer 1.1 works fine!

Hi, just installed the new Coreplayer 1.1 on the new Sleuth ROM.
I did no adjustments in settings whatsoever (default ATImageON).
Played an avi video in portrait and landscape, skipped back and forward.
Works perfect!
Concur. Coreplayer 1.1 is a HUGE improvement. Finally worth the $20 I paid for it back in Oct. AVRCP works now as well. ImageON acceleration is just short of phenomenal. I worked with the Core folks a bit and told them about the hardware table file. Quite frankly, I argued against them modding it b/c that would put them into device specific mode. They found a way to do it, however and I'm glad they did!
edit: I'll look at their modified table when I get a chance and mod my patch accordingly if its different.
You're right, IT WORKS!!!! Finally!!!

Just tried it on Schaps 3.30c, works GREAT !
As it now works with acceleration there is a huge speed improvement!
Does it play *.flv files?

Is there a trial version of Coreplayer? Not TCPMP, an actual trial version of the actual Coreplayer. I've tried TCPMP and it didn't work with the buttons on the Moto HT820 so I'm wondering if that is fixed in Coreplayer.
coreplayer 1.1 supports the wmp plugin approach for avrcp support so your ht820 should work with it.
I've been using TCPMP and it seems to work fine as well.
My biggest gripe with the Coreplayer was that it refuses to stream music over my wifi network at home.

So Coreplayer is an exact copy of TCPMP. The only difference is a skinned interface. I paid 20$ for NOTHING.
Actually, the ATI ImageON is finally supported and AVRCP now works. Neither of these features were in TCPMP. Also, the CoreTech media library is lightyears ahead of TCPMP's rudimentary playlists...
Does core player with the OEM rom on a 8525 work when paused with no modifications? Or does it only work with the modified rom with drivers?

belina what the hell do you expect?? When you go into a developers forum and start bad mouthing the software......you will notice that WM6 uses WMV9 which is a different codec alltogether....wmvs from an earlier codec work fine as i am testing right now....as for MJPEG this may be an issue but not one that hasnt been commented on in many forums.
I suggest you read up before you begin spitting your dummy out about a piece of 'in development' software!!!!

This is a bug. It appears that you can stream directly if you know the location but if you use internet explorer and launch Coreplayer through a file association then it will simply play the last selection you had going. There's a thread on this over at corecodec.com. Hopefully, they'll have a fix for this one soon...
I also had problems with WM9 so I did a bit of investigation work.
Core player has been advertised to run WMV9, see for yourself here.
You can see corecodecs official suppliers page, which has now been back edited to remove all mention of wmv9.. also all posts, friendly ones too have been deleted by the forum admin regarding anything that is not pat on the back for the team, including how to enable wmv9 etc..
So I spoke to betaboy (one of the dev's) and his collegues.. they confirmed NO wmv9 support.. NO WMV support. NO plugins. When I showed them it was advertised to include this wmv9 codec, they explained it was because it maybe can in the future just not now.
Well, so setting aside the dubios business model. I searched xda devs and found a post relating to wmv9.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298126&highlight=wmv9+video
Some people are having issues getting WMV9 in TCPMP working with WM6, particularly those of us who are trying to use TCPMP with Orb and are getting a nasty WMV9/WMA9 not supported error. This is because WM6 includes newer versions of the WMV and WMA codecs, which are named differently than WM5's codecs. Orb does work with WMP Mobile 10 and Conduits Pocket Player, but the video is incredibly jerky for some reason
Click to collapse
So I tried this method and yes it's a dirty fix.. video is jerky. allthough slightly less jerky than playing wmv9's in the microsoft mediaplayer.
I then pursued the matter further and some kind people from xda devs had this solution, by copying these files into your tcpmp/coreplayer folder.
http://rapidshare.com/files/39953628/wmvplugins.zip.html
Performance is better, however videos are still pretty much unwatchable at 300kbps video due to massive frame rate drops etc..
I am wondering why wmv9 is cuasing us such a problem.. I have found it to be the most common wmv format used. I wonder if anyone knows if the decoder from wm6 is buggy or can be extracted/modified/renamed in some way to enable us better performance. Or if newer Rom releases have a newer updated versions included? I see wmv9decoder.dll in the windows folder but cannot copy it or anything.. maybe this isnt the file we need to look at, but it maybe..
To conclude the Core team have produced a great peice of software, there bussiness practices are pretty dodgey. There is no need for it, as they have a good product..
Thank you Ribdool
for your investigations on this issue - this is what I call good work.
I orderd it online and read their announcements carefully before and than
had the same problem and felt pretty tricked as the player did not support WMV.
Hopefully they find a solution soon.

Anyone knows whether Coreplayer (or other players) can do it?

Got my Desire! How on earth do I play video?

I had ordered my Desire from Mobiles.co.uk, but as I was driving past CPW in Chiswick on Saturady, I popped in and 15mins later I walked out with one!
I have had an HTC Diamond 2 (WM6.5) and an iPhone in the past, and I am totally delighted with it! Being new to Android, Im just feeling my way round things, but even now, I have to say it is the best phone Ive ever had!
I cannot work out how to play movies on the Desire! I moved a movie file over to the SD card (via USB) and I just cant find any app to play the movie - heck, I cant even find any built in utility to browse the SD card with! Does the Desire have an inbuilt video player, or do I need to install one from the market? Are any highly recommended?
This stupid newbie would really like some help!
If the video is formattet correctly it should be playable from the "Albums" app.
and no native file browser is installed, but I can recommend Estrong file explorer (will also let you browse windows shares on wifi and FTP)
Aaah.... Ill try that! I was looking for some dedicated movie app, but couldnt find one installed. Am I correct in thinking that MP4 format movies (as with the iPhone) are what the Desire plays? And any ideas what the `best` settings I use in my encoder (tmpgenc)?

Hey there. I really reccommend using doubleTwist on your PC - it's free and works really well with the Desire. It syncs your music and video files - and makes all your video files playable on the desire too as it does a conversion during the copy.
I've tested it by syncing a divx file on my pc with the desire - it plays great using the desire video player.

Well I tried a 42minute divx file. It took about 5-10mins to copy (transcoding as it copied I guess) and the quality was perfect. No lip sync issues or anything that you might find in a dodgy conversion.
I took a look at the new file on the SD Card - it was the same size but now intead of the divx file (avi container) it was a .mp4

I used super last night to convert an xvid avi, output quality was awful.
Installed double twist which has a striking resemblance of iTunes..lol I thought these android phones were meant to be iphone competition? however they are becoming similar in many ways.. Pinch to zoom, app store, navigation menu sliding.. Itunes/double twist.
Anyway Doubletwist done a great job of converting an xvid avi, although first attempt the converted video was nowhere to be found on my phone after the sync..
So I did it again and watched some 24 on the train this morning.. Quality was great..
Although I did have my touch HD as backup encase the conversion wasn't good.
For any one struggling to find the videos on your phone, open the Photo's app.
Not sure why its called Photos as it opens pictures and videos..

I played with the Video playback functionality on Desire yesterday.
It accepts MP4 container with H.264 video encoding (up to L5.1, but only BASELINE profiles) + AAC for audio.
MP4 - 1000 kbits H.264 + 128 kbits (stereo), 800x480, 25fps MP4 is very fluent.
AVI - isn't supported
XVID may be supported too, but probably only in a MP4 container.

A Comprehensive review of the Media Link

Intro
To start off I thought I'd do this review to set a few people's mind to rest by covering all aspects of the Media Link. The Media link was included with my contract by Phones4u.
My setup is HTC One X, Samsung LCD TV, 300Mbps Wireless network (Multiple access points) and the media link of course.
Hardware
The unit has a sleek exterior and mounting bracket allowing you to stick it to the back of your TV, the device simply slips in and out of it. There is an LED on the face of the device as well as the HTC logo and on top of the device is a single button. On the bottom are the HDMI port and micro usb power port.

Software
You may already be familiar with the screen shown below, it seems the media link is always in this state when powered, the manual does not give instruction on powering down the device and the button serves as a PBC button and reset. standby and HDMI-CEC functions would have been a great addition but you can't have everything.
The device then has four main functions, Image, video, music streaming and mirroring the phone. The respective app triggers the streaming mode and stays in this mode, allowing you to continue using your phone as usual (All be it in landscape) until you press close.
Music
Video
HD Films streamed from the device look fantastic, buttery smooth, in sync. Very impressed, it looks like it's coming straight from the PC.
Photo
Mirroring
Video takes around 5 seconds to buffer
Music takes around 2
and Photos around 1
The device also supports DLNA and is visible on the network as a streaming device
Also interestingly when the handset spots the media link on the network not only does it trigger notifications (I found them very annoying and turned them off in the app's settings) but even with the notifications turned off if you choose a photo from the gallery it offers to show it on the TV for you.
The youtube app also does this however minimizing the youtube app will put the media link back into mirror mode.
Final Thoughts
This device is fantastic, nice small form factor, very portable, easy to set up and for showing your captured content, streaming music and films it's phenomenal. Now I received this for free with my contract, honestly if I didn't I wouldn't pay £80 for it. As good as it is I already have a media streamer and a fully fledged server that hosts my media, for me to put films on my internal memory to send to my tv is a bit silly, however it's still great for showing friends and family photos and videos I've shot and for that reason (As well as bragging rights, it's pretty damn cool) I'll be keeping it.
05/05/2012 02:35 GMT
Whilst downloading shadowgun and using the media link Battery monitor widget measured around 1200ma drain and the battery reached 51 degrees celcius. Don't know how accurate that is but the phone is scorching hot, overheat LED was flashing too
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
Please thank if I've helped you.
Did you try it with any games? presumably it would use mirror mode.

Yes, it does use mirror mode and it does work. I tried out GTA III with it and the delay between is manageable but of course it's very hard to control with the phones screen so a controller is absolutely necessary. I found it stuttered once or twice but overall not a bad performance. I'll try to get some footage tomorrow when one of my housemates is around to use their phone to capture it.
PC Streaming
Did you manage to stream video from PC to TV with and/or without the phone?
Is it working with other DLNA certified devices, e.g. tablets, phones ...?
What video formats are you able to play?

Using the "Play to" function of windows media player I can stream most audio and picture files. With video streaming I can stream .AVI and .MP4 however MKV files don't seem to work. I do Have K-Lite Codec Pack and the files do play in media player on the PC. Media player won't stream Matroska to my WDTV which definitely supports MKV so perhaps media player is the weak link.

Anything the default gallery app recognises, MP4 and AVI has worked for me. I tried to play an MKV using MX player but even in mirror mode the TV mirrors the phone trying to stream so the TV and phone icon appears on both, no video.

[Q] Galaxy Tab 3 (GT-P5210) + MX Player + DTS Codec

Hey Guys
Just got a Galaxy Tab 3 (GT-P5210) and I'm struggling to get MX Player to play MKVs with DTS audio.
I've been to the "MX Player Custom Codec with DTS Support" thread and followed the instructions, but still no audio when playing back MKVs with DTS audio.
The codec I downloaded for my device was "x86-SSE3 [MD5:3dea0d71e4db915aab777316c697ef23]"
But, one thing I noted was that in step 6 it states:
"Navigate into the folder you put on your device. It will list all five library files. Press OK"
The zip I downloaded only had one file within it (libffmpeg.mx.so), so am I doing something wrong?
When I try play a movie with DTS audio, I get this message:

Thanks for the reply, but something must be amiss somewhere with the way I have it configured as I tried that and still couldn't get it to work.
Anyhow, I've give up on MX Player for playing back network/SMB shares and paid for 'Archos Video Player' and also downloaded he 'Archos - All Codecs' (from m4rk3t) and everything seems to play fine now over my local network.
In fact, I cannot believe I haven't came across 'Archos Video Player' before.
It actually very good at video playback as you would expect, but it can also scrape movie and TV data from various online databases in much the same way as XBMC on PC can (but obviously not as configurable).
I'm just gutted didn't discover this a couple of years ago as the time wasted faffing around with various programs, different options and plenty of tweaking far outweighs the £3.99 spent on the 'Archos Video Player'.
In fact, my first PMP was an 'Archos 704 WiFi 80GB' (around 2008), which used to sell @ around £400 and I still cannot work out how they never managed to dominate the current market in such devices with them having a massive headstart on everyone else.
Shame, as they made some sturdy kit too.

In fact, my first PMP was an 'Archos 704 WiFi 80GB' (around 2008), which used to sell @ around £400 and I still cannot work out how they never managed to dominate the current market in such devices with them having a massive headstart on everyone else.
Shame, as they made some sturdy kit too.

the setting is the little musical note in the very top right of MX player, once you start playing a video. you choose software decoder there, and the audio track you want and it works.
i use MX player for all my network playback needs, trouble free.
Just an update to say WOW!
This app has made my tablet what I have been crying out for since getting my 'ASUS TF101' back in November 2011.
This is it!
For anyone who hasn't seen it, here some screen captures of the 'Archos Video Player' widget (which can be re-sized to fill the whole screen as I have).
One screen for movies, one screen for TV shows etc.
MooVees & TeeVee
The widget even lets you scroll through the contents of you SMB folder (once it's been indexed) and quickly populates the screen with thumbnails as you scroll up/down.
Clicking the thumbnail then lauches the movie.
Awesome!
Maybe not for everyone, but this is just what I've been looking for.

Maybe it's something else with my configuration then as I did this earlier with a movie containing DTS audio and I just got the same error messages as I did originally.
I even tried downloading and installing the x86 codec again, but got the 'Unsupported device' message once more.
Anyhow, no looking back now.
For me personally, 'Archos Video Player' is what I've been looking for.
Primarily, I want my tablets to be PMPs and this is what 'Archos Video Player'.
Thanks for your help.
wait you said x86, maybe thats why. mines ARM. (tab 3 8.0)
could be that it behaves different between the two.

It could be!
What device are you using?
I know when I check my 'Decoder' settings, there is an option to 'Download custom codec' and it says underneath 'Please download x86 type cusom codec' and even when I follow this route to obtain the codec, I still get the same errors.
Just been having a mess around with the 'Archos Video Player' and discovered that everything seems to play fine on the 'Samsung Galaxy Tab 3' in 720p MKV format over the network (don't have 1080p the experiment with).
However and probably due to it's age, some movies seem a bit choppy on the 'ASUS TF101'.
More than happy now tho'.

Managing music on phone

I just switched from an iPhone to a Pixel 2 XL. I do not have a very large data plan, so I took a suggestion from a friend and loaded all of my music into Play Music and then downloaded it onto my phone(put my songs into playlists and downloaded those). Now I have an issue where a lot of my explicit songs have been replaced with edited versions. I searched around and found there is an option "Fix incorrect match" in Play Music but I have already had a handful of songs that were like this and I just started using it today so I know there will be a lot more.
So my question is, if I use Android File Transfer to transfer my songs from my computer to my local device, will I still run into the same issue with songs being replaced with edited version? Should I look for a completely different Music Player and just sync my music to that?
I pay for Google Play Music and get all the explicit music I want. Although, I don't use offline option very much.

If the track is available locally, i.e. on the device, the local copy should take precedence over the copy in the cloud.
I went ahead and tested some of the songs that were changed to the edited versions. So far, transferring with USB hasn't changed any of the explicit versions to edited versions. It will take awhile for me to transfer everything manually but I suppose it is better than having the edited versions. I am still not a huge fan of Play Music thus far.
Play Music isn't to everyone's taste, but I like having all my music available at a moment's notice. Granted, I could simply drag all 60+ GB of music I have onto my P2XL (128GB version) but I'd much rather use the space for movies.
The big issue people seem to have with Play Music is Google botching matches. For example, I have a copy of the Avril Lavigne single "Girlfriend" from her album "The Best Damn Thing". When I uploaded it Google botched the match and thought I had uploaded the German version of the song. I had to remove it from my collection and re-upload, because "Fix Incorrect Track" didn't work. Even now, it's not totally correct because I have the sanitized version in the Google Music collection. Another example: I have both the English and German versions of "99 Red Balloons" by Nena. Google went and converted the German version into the English release.
I will say however that I uploaded my music years ago, and Google's machine learning has improved since then.
I use an app called iSyncr to wirelessly sync all my music from my iTunes library on my Mac to my 2 XL. I use Pulsar+ music player and it works great.
If you were using Apple Music or something along those lines, then I'm not too sure.
I didn't realize Google Play Music does a matching process with your uploads. Even though I had tons up albums uploaded from my iTunes library, most of my uploads that I play are DJ mix CDs.
My clarifying questions are:
- One, are you're using the offline option on explicit songs that you uploaded but when make them offline, Google gives you the clean version right
- And two, do you have a Google Play Music subscription or are you using the free 50,000 upload capacity?

@EeZeEpEe: The song matching is how Google can provide 320Kbps MP3s, regardless of the quality of the actual file. Using the Avril Lavigne song as an example, I have it on my HDD at 128Kbps, but the copy on Google Music is 320Kbps. It's also sanitized of course, but having one word in a song muted doesn't bother me.

Okay but for the songs that it can't match (My friends' CDs they made 15+ years ago before online distribution) it's playing the exact quality I uploaded right? Which is fine by me.
And my second question regarding having a subscription, the explicit version of most songs (Like that Avirl Lavigne example) is available as seen in my screenshot. So is this not matching because you don't have a subscription or you do have a subscription but for only for offline use it's still not giving you the explicit version and for streaming you do get it?

Songs that Google can't match are uploaded to their servers at the quality you ripped them at. I can't answer your question about the subscription because Google hasn't said one way or another. However, I do know I don't have my copy of the song tagged the way yours is. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Yeah, I found out that Play Music has some song matching algorithm that matches your song with songs already stored in their Play Music database. This is a good idea but apparently it is flawed as you tend to get mismatched songs like in this case. As far as I know, this happens both with and without a Google Play Music subscription.

It wouldn't necessarily bother me for songs that were edited for one or two words but with some of my songs that were edited had multiple words in the Chorus that were edited. Maybe I just need to start listening to cleaner music

If that's the case, I would remove the clean versions from your library and add the explicit ones, if available, instead.
I actually turned on the "block explicit songs in radio" option because my wife doesn't like them anymore. Sometimes explicit ones still get through so the reverse isn't perfect either. LOL
