Engadget will have a live demo of a WP7S device on Feb 27th! - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

Hey guys, this is just in..
http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/23/the-engadget-show-returns-this-saturday-feb-27th-now-with-l/
They will be streaming the action live on stage.

Dump the ROM please

Anyone know what time in UK?
Hope they will go through more deeply in the UI, settings, configurations ...

5 pm New York would be 10 pm in the UK, I think.

thats in 2 days!
cant wait

I wouldn't hold my breath, that's going to be more of the same stuff. The OS isn't ready, has no dialer and other important parts; they won't be able to clarify whether third-party apps will be able to work in background as there are no third-party apps for WP7. If they see lags in the interface that won't mean anything. If they don't it won't mean anything either.

And who's to say that the build shown at MWC wasn't an old build? They kept insisting that it was an "early" build. Most people probably just assumed that "early" was still "recent". But what if by "early" they meant "from a few months ago"? If nothing else it was somewhat old because that was their latest "stable" build while their devs certainly have unstable builds being worked on still. No way they risk a huge event like that with untested software. And they don't want to show their whole hand so far out. They just wanted to get the base UI and principles out there to get the hype started. We'll prolly se a more feature complete build at MIX. Maybe even a full emulator
It's not like Engadget is going to be borrowing the device with no MS person around. I wouldn't be surprised if a MS person was the only one using the device like at MWC. Don't expect Engadget to find anything out by playing with it. If there is any new info learned, it will be from a MS person telling them the info while showing off the OS. Not impossible but not likely either.

Engadget's latest teaser for the event sheds some more light...
Microsoft will also be on hand to demo Windows Phone 7 Series and the company's own Aaron Woodman will be sharing stories about the major changes Redmond has made to the Windows mobile OS.

so yea, doesn't sound like the engadget folks will be getting any actual hands-on time with it. For now you either have to work for Microsoft or be the 6yr old child of a Microsoft employee.

They are demonstrating an LG prototype (see: WP7 release phone) on this show live now:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/27/the-engadget-show-live-with-avner-ronen-wp7s-demo-and-more/

So, since I missed it, was there anything interesting on the show?

No, engadget earning a lot of money on transmitting a WP7S ad.

No not much at all.
The guy at MS was very vague (except for the "hint" that we should attend Mix2010) and didn't reveal any new information.
The biggest thing was the first WP7 phone, the LG whatever. It had a keyboard, but they neglected to try out WP7 in landscape.
They said not to rule out Linux and Mac support for WP7. It is currently not supported, but is an "internal debate".
Also noted is that the IE is an early build, and I wouldn't be surprised if the whole OS is still an early build.
Supposedly MS has been talking with Adobe for awhile and Flash would be an important thing to have in the browser (something of that sort) and MS wants their browser to be competitive, yada yada.

According to this site:
- Multilanguage
- Ultra fast for an early build (I quote : "So fast that it looks like on WM 6.5 the Snapdragon only ran at half its power")
- TomTom is bundled with that ROM
- No SMS problem (They are referring to the SMS issues on WM 6.5 on most Leo ROMs)
- Zune part of the phone is not working on this ROM (error reports, etc.)
For the time being, no source/link to a ROM is provided, I'll keep you posted. But it doesn't seem like a fake to me.

That's what I figured as well at first sight... But then I saw that every tiles is translated in Dutch, as well as having a Dutch operator... I guess time will tell.
I apologize beforehand if this turns out to be fake, I thought I'd share it to everyone here.
it seems real to me i guess. i believe that the rom might not b working cause the os is not even half ready right now. its just that MS had to show something so they made a simple mockup jus to fill the presentation yest. lets see how thingsgo now and how much they grow this concept of windows phone 7 series..
If this is not fake, leaked Windows Phone 7 roms will be soon over the internet

No need for apology. You found a good and interesting site...
I think the good news there though, is that 'applications' still live on (TomTom) so the whole multi-tasking issue could be a non-issue as long as stuff still work in the background.
And at the end of the day it is running on top of CE6, so multitasking should be there, even if it's tried to be hidden away.
the background image ... dunno ... oddd
easy to fake and just display as an image
Some guy on a dutch site tests devices for htc. He hangs around, also on xda, as "xmoo". He stated dat htc is running WP7 on a hd2 somewhere in taiwan.
So it is definetely possible to run it on a hd2, I think soon there will be roms available with WP7 here on xda.
There's no reason to doubt that an early build has been made to run on the HD2. If there's any existing commercially available device that could be used as a test bed that that's it. Unless everyone working on WP7S gets prototype hardware to use, it makes sense to test it on the HD2.
Of course, that's a long way from assuming that the final version will be released for the HD2. (But then again, that's what this site is for. )
Call me crazy but maybe they'll announce a beta rom available for the HD2 at MIX or maybe later this year at TechEd? Similar to how Google had an unlocked G1 for devs and Apple allows devs to have beta builds of the iPhone OS?
MS knows that apps/hubs are going to be key for them so they'll be keen on getting it out to as many people as possible as early as possible. It's hard to write software, particularly 3D based software, solely in an emulator.
this is fake.
the show is in spain but the image says he is connected to T Mobile NL (dutch network).
everyone knows when u go to another country u use there networks not your home network.
It looks fake. The font on there is definitely not Segoe, which is used all over the Zune HD's and WP7's UI. Also, I don't think there's a background on the start screen, no?

They've never shown a background before but I would be sorta surprised if it didn't support having a background.
Looks like the same font to me...
This picture definitely isn't taken on the MWC. It must have been made in the Netherlands as you can see that it is connected to a dutch network. This would either indicate that developers do indeed get early builds to start development of software, or it is fake.
Now it would seem reasonable to release the software on a currently existing device which is capable of running WP7. This would be the HD2. This way developers can start creating and running software on the platform.
Fake or not, it is only a matter of time before developers should receive a build to tinker around with. We all know how important Apps are for the platform to work. I was however expecting them to receive those in a month.
WinMo.nl says that it's an early build of WP7, so that could explain the differences.
And the differences makes it even more possible to be real!
Anyway I'd love it to be real.

O..M..G WM7 Hysteria !!!

I understand that many of you are excite about this new OS WM7 but, to be published daily variety of subjects, which is the most And so on.
I personally do not like the new visual OS, but this does not mean that it will be in live prew.
I thought, not stimulates, and every day to comment on, something we are not clear.
Who can say whether it prefers WM6.5 or WM7 in that situation you've never used WM 7???
One is to watch a preview online, but quite another thing to hold in your hands this phone and use this new OS.
Only then can express relevant opinions.
But before that happens, all other comparisons and topics are to put it mildly ridiculous
Regards
did this really deserve a completley new thread? you couldve posted this in the opinion thread. yes we know, ppl are going nuts over wp7s but come on, this is just adding to it

1st i was thinking to wirte it on some already opened Thread but honestly they are ALOT and its hard to choice where to write exactly.
The best thing is to open New Thread many peoples to be able to see and eventualy stop with this crazy hysteria till the WM7 is out and we can test it by ourselfs.
Indeed, There is now way you know if WP7 is great or not so great. The OS is not tested by anyone, only a prebuild seen at a conference more than a half year before release. There is nothing known about how open the platform is, what kind of multitask it has, etc, etc.
More than half of the treads here are from people who are bashing WP7, without knowing what it will be at the end. People who are bashing the HD2 because it wont have an official update, and so on. :')
We will know much more at MIX, and you can decide for yourself if it's nice, when there are rom's here at xda. (they will after all, also for the HD2)
You can't stop people from spectaculating what the new OS will be or not. But I agree it's ridiculous to open new threads like "do you prefer WM 6.5 or WP7" when noone never had the chance to use it before. I also don't feel very comfortable with the things I've seen so far but it's even more ridiculous to write things along the line "WP7 sucks I switch to Android" because at this point noone knows what the OS will really be in the end.
If HTC would come out the closet already and say HD2 won't be getting an update, officially, they could actualy save energy on this planet. People would not complaint and whine about it anymore and move on.

still no reason to overact on it. You buy a phone if you need it now. If you buy a phone that's meant to run a OS that currently doesn't even exist then it's actually your own fault, not HTC's or Microsoft's.

Why do they have to say that? Will they have to say there will be no iphone os, android or palmos update? When you buy your pc do they have to say it wont have an update to Windows 8? (juli 2011)

I won a WP7 phone!!!

Sadly, I won't get it til general availablity and I don't know which phone. Microsoft peeps are still being cagey with it. The guy wouldn't even let me take a pic of a LG WP7 device even though it's been all over the internet already. The only real new info I've gleaned is that they will support basic exchange policies like pin unlock and remote wipe. Still going to try and fenagle some more info out of them.
WTH? Congratulations!!
cool can i have it?
Congrats!.........
Depending on what they say, I might just get a HD2. The WP7 device is supposed to be general availability and they might make devices available before then and I'm not willing to wait.
niceeee
thats lucky and awesome!
Remember to colaborate with XDA and help WP7 become more awesome .

After having seen it in person, the whole OS is rather impressive. While it may not on paper be the #1 phone OS, it is rather good and will put up a good fight. Oh and they've only shown off around 70% of the OS's features. More positive info will come to light as we near launch.

I think I've always been relatively positive about the new OS. While some of the new restrictions are annoyingly restrictive, I don't think it'll be a problem for us. In one of the sessions today they showed off how devs will be able to unlock phones and it was just a desktop app that talks to the store. I can easily see this app being modified to just not talk to the store but I'm betting there will need to be more done than this. So while I still wish MS would open up the dev platform more, I somewhat respect the decisions they've made and I don't think it will be hard for the rest of us to have phones we can do as we wish with.
It was stated earlier in the week by one of the members of the WP7 team that only 70-80% of the OS had been shown off up to this point. However, after going hands on with a device for a while today, I didn't find much that we haven't seen yet. The whole thing is fluid and is super intuitive. It really is a joy to use. So I'm not sure how much is left to unveil but it seems rather useable today. But none of the WP7 guys that I talked to are using it full time yet so that's kind of telling.
nice... congrats... HD2 is still better looking then any of the WP7 phones we've seen... the only one that beats it is the prototype images of HD3 made in photoshop lol... dell lightening comes close, but hw keyboard kills it as well... just get the HD2, then u'll have to option of running 6.5 or android (90% possible so far) and prolly even wp7 when it comes out since it conforms to all specs ...
Pics or it didn't happen!
Jeeze. Necro thread!
I ended up deciding to wait for a WP7 device. The HD2 they had was a european model and couldn't do 3G here. A smartphone without 3G is useless. So I wait til October like everyone else. But at least it will be free.

Not all the specs, AFAIK the chipsets in the HD2 do not conform to all the hardware specs that Microsoft has made for Windows Phone 7 compatibility. Things like the hardware image scaler for example are not present in the HD2, nor is support for hardware acceleration of the VC-1 codec.

Nokia will be able to customize 'everything' in Windows Phone 7

Stephen Elop, in his financial and strategy briefing continuing Nokia's marathon Capital Markets Day, just posed an interesting rhetorical question: will Nokia be able to "customize everything" on Windows Phone 7 in order to differentiate itself? "Yes!" was Elop's ebullient proclamation, though he quickly pulled it back to say that Nokia likely won't make extensive use of this freedom to tailor Microsoft's OS. Instead, the company will be cautious and seek to maintain compatibility rather than pushing the boat out too far in tweaking the underlying software. That's a major shift for Microsoft, who forbade HTC from skinning Windows Phone 7 with Sense, something the Taiwanese company would surely have loved to do, and limited it to the introduction of a self-contained Hub. Now Nokia's saying it -- perhaps exclusively -- has been given the liberty to play around inside WP7 to its heart's content. We'll see how important that turns out to be whenever Nokia delivers its first device bearing its new smartphone OS. An insider tip tells us the current plan is to introduce such a handset by the end of 2011, potentially based on current hardware. Who's ready for Xbox Live on a future version of the N8?

Does this mean tht v can have hope of getting in deeper thru the roots of WP7, as nokia will surely hav a foot in, all v hav to do is follow them in...right? bt the only thing is tht the "microkia's" are still a lil far off. by then v probably wil already be down inside...eh...

A few more edges would be fine...I don't like this rounded design.
But, if these will have free Ovi Maps Navigation and those ultra clear black AMOLED-screen, I'd definitely go for them!
Hopefully they don't change a whole lot other than maybe apps. We've seen how multiple UIs has affected the fragmentation and performance of Android. If it's properly executed, and we have the option to use the standard Metro UI, I'm up for it, and as long as it doesn't hog the CPU performance any different than current devices, I'm up for possibly purchasing it. The reason why WP7, at least to me, is so appealing is because it runs so fluid and has a "togetherness" feel to it. All of the apps, the menus, etc all have the same design to them while not detracting from variety of apps.

I am amazed that such inbreeding still goes on in western countries, which surely must be the only reason for such a mentally challenged presenter.
Ill happily list anyone valid pros and cons of any device and remain completely objective whilst doing it AND putting aside that WP suites my needs best, why cant people who put them selves in that position at least attempt to be impartial?!
