Else Mobile UI - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

Will the HTC phones have this UI anytime soon ?
ELSE Mobile phone user interface
VIDEO: Hands-on with the ELSE Access Linux Platform smartphone

this is what i thought wm7 was going to look like

That 'home' menu looks pretty cool, the rest of the phone, eh. What's up with those side buttons?
However, their actual 'phone' functionality niceities are interesting - e.g. call handling while in another app, or during a meeting, etc. I'd actually pay for that as an app for our phones!
Also, their multitasking handling was cool.
BTW: Probably the wrong forum

Where should it be then ?
what category ?

Hi ilordvader,
You should go on the official site for more info: http://www.firstelse.com/
Also, it has nothing to do with Windows Phone 7 series (This UI is based on Limo).
To my mind, this thread should be moved in General forums.
Cheers.

This is actually much better than stupid iPhone-like WP7. And it even multitasks.

Multitasking is not special. Every phone EXCEPT the iPhone multitasks. Windows Mobile has been doing it for a decade.

Of course. I was trying to be sarcastic, because WP7 (just like iPhone) will not have true multitasking.

BTW,
The company which is responsible for this phone is an Israeli company called Else (foremly Emblaze). Another israeli designed cellphone is the Modu (or Modo, i'm not sure) which is intended for developing markets.

I hate tiny buttons
I love WP7 for it's big buttons.
I have said time and again, when you are mobile, you are HANDICAPPED. You cannot be looking for tiny buttons while you are walking down the street and typing an email or browsing.
So you need a phone with a large(er) size i.e HD2, and big buttons.
HD2's biggest flaw is it's array of tiny buttons on the bottom.

This thing has to be moved onto another forum.
Anyway, you can see that it is Linux-based, so maybe we can have it when we'll get a working Linux kernel for the HD2!
...Or on other devices (that are already running Linux just fine) like Diamond, Blackstone, Raphael etc.!

very nice ui, surprised that noone tried to replicate it for WM.

it would have been interesting if you talked about the hardware that's running the phone it would be interesting if we could boot that up on our devices the phone intergation is very slick i really liked the way it handled the phone call
i would like to see how it's developed in the future and if they release a version of hardware with a slide out keyboard if so i think i'd be interested in makin the switch if the development got big enough as thing here on xda have gotten
i just checked out the site really impressed with the functionality of the UI man if windows mobile 7 had been these i'd been very impressed but oh well well see what happens at MWC

they should worry about the 10%, because they are not a very well known company and they could use all the customers they can get, i saw the ui about 1 month ago, and after that i read about it again yesterday in this thread. they would be better off selling the ui idea to a bigger OEM or MS or Apple or Google, because only then this ui will become popular.

Upon initial device setup, you can choose either Left or Right handed operation. This can also be changed on-the-fly.

Should i switch?

Right now i have a Blackberry Bold (9000) & i have had WM phones in the past...I have been looking at the new Tilt it i like the phone but i wanted to know a few things before i get it.
1. Will it be able to use the new WM7?
2. Is the phone any good when it comes to texting & emails?
3. What are the key features to this phone?
I have also saw that you can put Android on the phone. How does that run?
Sorry i just wanted to know a few things before jumping into the phone.
Thanks!
1. From what I've read, it will not be able to upgrade to Windows Mobile 7, but from what we've seen why would you want it anyway.
2. The keyboard is the best out there. Text and email is a breeze.
3. Best user community out there. Phone can do anything I need it to and if it can't someone will build something to enable it (Android for one)
4. Android is out there. I run it on my phone, but it is in it's infancy. check out rhodium android in the wiki to find what's working and what isn't.
I'm not an expert, just a regular guy that uses my phone for regular stuff. Good luck with your phone decision. Hope I was of some help.

I think i will be going back to a WM phone... I have one more question i forgot to ask...???
1. How is the App Store?
app store sucks but as you know there are tons of wm apps that are scattered everywhere on the net
The TP2 will not get an official WP7 upgrade. The phone's processor is too slow, wrong button layout, and no capacitive screen. WP7 requires a capacitive screen (multi-touch) and a 3 button layout (including a dedicated "Bing" search button) on the front of the phone, and MS is being very strict about these requirements. Somebody on XDA will cook something for the TP2, but don't expect anything official.
If you use your phone heavily for work, the TP2 has a great speakerphone. I love the feature of just turning the phone over, and it switches automatically to speaker phone (with a hardware mute button!). Also, the ability to tether is very useful, if you travel frequently.
I wouldn't even worry about the WP7. I highly doubt this thing will be that great right off the bat. I'm not even intrigued by most of it. I highly recommend the tilt2 and you know that if you ever have problems, you always have this forum to fall back on. So much customization is possible with this phone, and that extent of customization for the WP7 will not be available for quite a while after those phones start coming out.
I think the tp2 is awsome but since i know there are a few WM device coming out right around the corner with snapdragon processors I would probably wait on them unless u need to get a new device asap.

Do NOT base your decision on this or expect this. This will most likely not happen since it is a completely different OS and kernel and would require completely new drivers.
You might want to try one out before getting it. The processor in this phone is the same one that they used for the previous generation and that is just a higher clocked version of the processor used in the generation before. It is pretty slow and takes about 4 seconds to load a text message conversation. That is pretty slow for a bunch of text.
If the speed is acceptable, then its a pretty nice device.

Wasn't that the case when Android came along though? But, I do agree that even if wtfomgwm7sp7 ever does get ported to the TP2, it won't be a pretty picture, kinda like that kid at the birthday party who tried to stuff the entire piece of cake in his mouth at once

That actually sums it up quite well...the TP2 isn't quite the bleeding edge of whats available in smartphones today, but you just have to decide if that (minor) level of compromise is justified to you by getting the sweetest hardware keyboard there is, period.* For some it is, for some it isn't.
*pure, unqualified, unapologetic opinion

Well yeah but the only HTC phone is HTC Desire US and i like to have a full keyboard =/....
Well anyways i got the Tilt 2 = D

This 3 button thing is a load of crap!

As per the title. WinPhone 7 requires 3 buttons and apparently the HD2 doesn't meet the criteria. What a load of tosh. Lets do the Math, 5-3=2. Start, back & search buttons. Now forgive me if I am wrong, but as a HD2 owner and looking at it as I type, but doesn't the HD2 have a Start button? Doesn't it have a Back button? And again, forgive me if wrong, but when you purchased a new keyboard with shortcut keys, wasn't the key with the picture of the house a shortcut to IE? IE, which was a method of searching, searching the Web. Doesn't Bing use the web to search. So could the home key not be used as the search key? Yes there are 2 extra keys, but at the end of the day, these devices are phones aren't they, so having 2 extra keys to answer and end calls makes sense.
Sorry for the rant, and if this has been mentioned before, but I for one are getting sick to the back teeth of hearing that the 3 button thing will be a reason that the HD2 doesn't get the upgrade.
Seg
I think it's almost funny like people still can't get over it. Yes, the HD2 won't get an update. The device is history. So what!? Go get a new phone.
But I also have to add some sarcasm: Yes, you really don't need a phone button on a phone.
Yikes!
Rammann, I am more than happy with my phone. I just find the comments about the HD2 not getting the upgrade as it doesn't have the "3 buttons" laughable.
Just my 2 penneth worth

Isn't there a thread somewhere on here about scaling hardware absent on the HD2 that is specified for WP7S ?
No camera button either,
I can see why they dont want to support though, as unlike previous WM WP7S will get updates from MS and not the manufacture, so having to constantly support a hacked to run on HD2 OS would get a bit iffy,
Plus dont you need 8GB of flash memory on the device also?? the HD2 already gives you too many out of storage errors

Great to see the pink accent colour - while it wouldn't be my choice, that means they've added a few more since the leaked and unlocked ROM.
GMail support showed up in the leaked rom already, if you clicked 'set up email account' you could choose it from a list.

Nokia 'Sea Ray' WP7

Nokia 'Sea Ray' WP7 handset revealed on a factory floor? (Video)
http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/19/nokia-sea-ray-wp7-handset-revealed-on-a-factory-floor-video/
Stephen Elop himself spilled the beans about Nokia's first WP7 handset, codenamed Sea Ray, when he told a large live audience and some whirring video cameras that he wanted the phone to be kept "super confidential." Now we have a whole new puddle of legumes lying on what sounds like a Chinese factory floor, courtesy of the authentic-looking video above. The clip reveals the N9-like device removed from what appears to be a stealth case, followed by a speedy boot-up into the Windows Phone OS. We're also treated to a quick look at the camera in action -- triggered by a dedicated shutter button that's missing on the N9 -- before a hurried "goodbye." There's not much else to see here, but could that reddish theme be a hint that this particular example is destined for Vodafone? Only time will tell.

WP7 is quicker on this set up than the most powerful android devices, so there's no need to shove juice hungry processors in there if not needed, its all about efficiency.
Count me in for a sea ray when its released, a lovely looking device and im looking forward to nokias great camera optics and mapping
That's a super nice phone. When Mango is finished, that will be the superman of WP7 phones.
Looks ok, I'm not blown away but, we all know it comes down to the numbers.
I know there is a lot of Nokia fans but, for the first Windows Phone 7 models from them I expect them to be innovative and different from the HTC and others. I don't see any sign of a front camera or anything else different.
I guess I'll wait for the numbers but, so far, not inpressed.

I doubt it, because the switch camera button in the camera app is missing... but i guess we have to wait for the release to be sure.
I like the way screen is protuding outside a few milimeters when you look at it from side.. once we fit it with a hard case covering only back.. it should fit in good and make the phone smooth and look good when holding in hands..
In this vedio it looks mediocre though because of all the plastic cover and stuff... I hope it has gorilla glass scratch proof glass and super amoled like S Omnia 7..
One more plus is earphone jack is at the end and not in middle like current phones..
I am praying their is a way to lock the stupid useless bing search button in this phone..
I don't see any evidence of a FFC. I suppose we'll have to wait though. Also, how is the bing button useless? I use it more often than anything else on the phone.

It looks too square for me, like a brick (not a fancy rounded style). Also, buttons location not too good for windshield mount, if you using handset as GPS (at least in my current windshield mount).
Looking good!
I actually even had a dream about this phone last night, in which I took a picture in low light, and it looked amazing.
The Bing button isn't useless. Sorry, had to respond to that... I find myself looking up things multiple times a day, and I use the Bing button often. Just because YOU don't use it, doesn't make it useless... Even now that I'm running Mango... I don't use the market tile, I just hit the search button, type in the app, and bam, I'm there... Though, as far as the locking, I will agree somewhat. They could include an option where it'll only trigger on a long-press when you're inside another app
Remember this is their first device. Nokia could have design it before Microsoft finalize the "skype-ability". And it could be their entry level windows phone, get it into the hands of the Nokia fanboy masses and spit out another in 6 months (or less) with the full featured device. I don't think the US will see this one. If it is mid priced offering to the EU and Asia. I think Nokia and Microsoft could easily start the takeover of the phone market.

Massive drawbacks with this phone

Ghost volume button issue on most devices
No micro sd card support
Confusing user interface
No Facebook contacts sync
No native social network widget
Can't add more home screens
Fuzzy speaker
Lock screen vibration can't be switched off
No digital clock only analog widget
Quadrant benchmark only 1500 score
Lag in many areas
No Facebook events calendar sync
Only 5m camera
NO SWYPE
THE VOLUME BUG HAS REALLY PUT ME OFF AND SAMSUNG ARE STILL TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE,
Then don't buy it. Or if you have it, return it. Or ship it to me, I'll take it.

"Most" devices. How do you know? because people on XDA talk about it? I highly doubt it is "most" devices. You're always going to hear from people with the problem.

Personal preference. I don't mind. Whats it matter? I have an SDcard and haven't removed in it a year and a half.

Its a new version of android. If you're buying this phone you KNOW that its different. If its confusing to you I'm sorry but its of course going to have a learning curve. Are you gonna complain when your other phone gets updated to ICS too? Gonna stay on 2.3 for the rest of your life? Have fun.

Google has said they'll let Facebook back in when they follow the rules for contact syncing. Its Facebooks job to fix the app.

Again, personal preference. Every Nexus has had 5. If you want more, add a launcher. And just as a side note, if you're using more than 5 screens, its faster to go to the app drawer than swipe over to a 6th/7th screen.

Small cosmetic issue, again personal preference. Most people are fine with it (and I'm pretty sure you can turn off haptics in the settings).

Its the first phone (and a dev phone) with ICS. Its gonna be slightly off. You know this going in when you buy a Nexus. And again, it depends on whos using it and what they deep acceptable for "lag".

Lame gs2 fanboy. Sounds like he needs an iphone more than anything if he is 'confused'.

"Massive"??...thats a strong term to use. Most of your points are either things we already knew or there are other ways to circumvent, so therfore a non-issue. I think you just wanted to make a thread just to be making a thread.

There's nothing wrong with expecting things to work. The problem is that most of the things you are expecting are things that you should have known about or things that never existed or were expected to be implemented.
Seems like OP is one of those average Android users who have not seen what stock Android is.
That's the problem with Manufacturer skins and casual users, take away Touch Wiz or HTC Sense and they're confused as hell.

You sound like a facebook addicted teenager. You realized that you bought a device that will set the standard for FUTURE software development right? If you want to be at the forefront of android OS, you have to let app developers to catch up. What, do you think facebook knows what will happen with ICS? If you can't live without those apps, go back to a gingerbread device, there are many choices!
I find it funny that you listed low quadrant score as an issue. You should really research about a phone before you buy it, this will inform you about the hardware limitations such as no sd card support or 5 mp camera before you take the plunge of purchasing the device.

Ghost volume button issue on most devices
No micro sd card support - this will always be an issue. The first 2 didn't have it, why would you think the 3rd one will. Galaxy Nexus has always been a developer phone so its treated differently.
Confusing user interface - From what everyone is saying, they are loving the new interface. It's refreshing and when you get used to it, its hard for people to go back
No Facebook contacts sync
Nexus S 4G had this issue. This isn't a issue with facebook not following a certain protocol that Google requested. and they took it off the Nexus phones. Or they just don't like them because they have their version of a social network
No native social network widget
They do its called google plus. Everything isn't native but 3rd party sources
Can't add more home screens
As much as I have to kinda agree with you in this because its nice to have 7 or more screens, its a dev phone so you knew this was happening long before ICS was announced
Fuzzy speaker
that sucks, but from reviewers they say its quieter but clear
Lock screen vibration can't be switched off
No digital clock only analog widget
Just get another widget that looks better anyways. They never truly had a digital clock worth adding on your home page anyways.
Quadrant benchmark only 1500 score
There have been cases that proven that the GN has scored better on web tests and other tests. Quadrant can be faulty. You are using a gingerbread program on a completely different OS. A bigger jump than eclair to gingerbread. I would compare the Razr scores as the initial breakdown (OMAP4430 vs OMAP4460 in the GN) and use that as your base comparing since Razr runs on Gingerbread
Lag in many areas
No Facebook events calendar sync
Only 5m camera Megapixels shouldn't matter. and Someone has done a camera comparison. The GN is not far off and infact has better low light capabilities than the S2. Once again this is a the same story over again, you knew this going from Nexus S that the camera won't be the best class, the same holds true here.
NO SWYPE - Swype will eventually be available through apk once it is compatible. Google isn't going to put swype on their phones. It's a 3rd party software and its up to other manufacturers to decide if they want it on their android device
THE VOLUME BUG HAS REALLY PUT ME OFF AND SAMSUNG ARE STILL TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE, I feel ya about the volume bug. But thats what it is a bug. This is common for alot of new products, just like never buying the first year of a new model car. But alot of reviewers from publication have not seen this volume bug so it could be something else entirely and should be fixed soon.

I put my thoughts above.
The volume bug is the only one that is severe. I don't mean to be rude, but the rest is just plain ... ignorant.
Quadrant is an accurate benchmark? It is appalling unreliable.
Megapixels is a measure of camera quality?
I'd return in your position.
What a waste, there are so many people drooling over that phone and can't yet get it...then we have to see this!
