Upgrading from Hero - Desire General

Hello
I'm thinking about upgrading to the Desire or Nexus, from my Hero.
One of the reasons is, that some of the 3. party apps I have installed isn't running at full speed and using the touch pad slows them further down. So will I notice some major speed improvements with a snapdragon device in single apps, or is it more overall performance and multitasking improvements. I think if the apps isn't made to use better hardware.

Everything will be faster and battery life and other things will also be better.

Thanks
I just wanted to be sure.

i would recommend u play safe and go for the nexus one as it has already been rooted and custom roms, speed tweaks etc will all be easily available. the newer android phones released by htc seem really hard to hack.

well i think that the desire would be a better choice for him as it comes with the sense ui he is used to. yes there is a rom for nexus too but it's not stable yet so desire....and if he doesn't want the sense, i am positive that desire will be rooted too and you will have the option to install the stock android rom 2.1!

Wait for official Froyo? Or use Custom Rom?

Hello everybody!
My question is simple.
Should i wait for the official Froyo for my HTC Desire, or should I usw a custom Rom from this Board?
I am very disappointed with the battery-time of my normal stock 2.1 rom...
My Desire just lasts for about one day with normal usage.
Is the battery-life going to be better with the official froyo (an with roms out of the section of rom-cooking in this board) ?
Would you recommend me to wait for the official Rom, or not?
Are there some reasons against an unofficial froyo-rom?
Wich rom you would recommend at the moment?
(dont need htc-sense...)
Thanks for you help, and sorry for bad english
If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend checking out "Juice Defender" in the Marketplace. You can fine tune your APN/WIFI settings and such to get much more out of your battery. Best of all it's free. If that doesn't satisfy your battery hungry needs then I suggest you stop listening to my advice as I know squat about custom Roms. What I do know though is that battery life is reported to be greatly improved in Froyo.
Even if you wait for official froyo, the devs here will make it better and add more features make it faster etc and you'll be back here in no time you can always unroot your phone of you change your mind.
the proper answer world be depends on how you use your phone, I too would suggest using "Juice Defender" if your battery needs are not met, however note that even if you w8 for the official froyo rom you will probably not notice a major power saving effect over the existing rom. In fact I doubt that you will notice any improvement in battery life whatsoever considering you seem to be a proper power user.
Some custom roms run less services/process so you will be able to save up some battery life, its the only proper way too cut down on power consumption I would imagine the closer to the vanilla system the better.
With HTC straight out lying about the release date for the update (as usual), yesterday I took the plunge and have moved over to DeFroST after rooting.
Based on my initial impressions, battery life has improved. Rooting opens up the possibility of using the brilliant application that is setCPU to very finely tune many battery consuming aspects of the device and should make 48hrs achievable without switching off push and sync. There's a thread in the dev section about this.
I would do it. DeFroST is a brilliant ROM, but there are plenty of gems in the Dev section

I'm guessing you needed an unlock code to upgrade your radio since your on orange?
i flashed yesterday and , oh boy, what can i say - its great.
you root your phone with unrevoked, then flash a custom rom, then the new radio ( for froyo ). easy, peasy, painless. froyo kicks ass, i chose leedroid and its so speedy, an battery life has improved, altough not too much i think
@ bedeabc
When did HTC lie about the release date:???: the only official announcement I heard was 3rd quarter... there is still weeks/months to go yet. Any reply you see posted via some ones uncle who told my mother that apparently honest to god customer service said two weeks...is not 'official' lol.

So, you guys think, that its not be worth, to wait for the official froyo?
There will not be some "new" things, i will miss in the froyo, I can get in den Dev-Area?
Cause i dont like it, to change the rom every 2 month ;-)
ATM I have a rooted desire with ocuv kernel.
Untouched radio.
Is the upgread "heavy"? (dangerour, time-expensive?)
Thanks for all of your Help
I just upgraded to Froyo, Android 2.2, yesterday.
Well i think i love it. Extra functions and the speed is incredible.

Well me personal I'm waiting, if I had a branded phone I probably wouldn't wait as it'll be X amount of weeks after HTC release until you carrier release its version with bloatware.
I am obviously one of those easily satisfied people, I think its a great phone as is with just a few tweaks here and there (voice search, keyboard etc..) which didn't even require root

depends on the new rom. If it has Sense you don't lose it Rooting doesn't concern Sense or anything else on interface
what's important for everyone who's considering to move on new froyo sense roms (2.06) - they're stable and fast, I'm using them for a week and haven't noticed one error or reboot.
You can try them out and then decide for yourself whether to return to eclair, or use them until htc releases official version. I'm certain you will choose second option

I don't know but differences between official update with motoblur is that:
Windows vista 64 bit is android 2.1
Windows 7 64 bit is android 2.2
Hope you understand this !
Real differences I have found is speed, market downloads you can update all, flash full version for browsing, thats about it really.

Totally mate, it is hell fast and 2.3 is even faster plus you get other things with 2.2 such as full flash support, better performace and speed of course. You can feel it wen playing games and when the benchmark scores double the benchmakrs when running 2.1

That's the point. Probably I'll wait for Motorola official update, since I use this phone for work and I don't want to mess it up. Anyway glad to know newer versions are faster .
Sent from my MB525
Just to add my thoughts...
The biggest difference I have seen between 2.1 and 2.2 is a reduction in battery life.
On 2.1, both the original 2.21 that my handset came with and the 2.34 Blur-lite ROM I flashed, I could easily get 2 days of what I consider 'normal' usage between charges, 3 days if I really didn't use it much.
With 2.2, I've only seen a day or so of 'normal' use before needing to charge and that's having used Higgsy's modified build on top of the Chinese Froyo sbf and the new Orange Blur-lite ROM too.
Beyond that, the only noticeable difference IMO is the addition of flash in the browser.
So step666 you noticed:
- less battery life
- overall performances not increased
- added flash support
That's not what I'm looking for.

I didn't notice that the battery is running out faster on 2.2, I think it can last 2-day based on the remaining capacity at night (I charge every night) on normal usage.
But if you're using this for work I seriously discourage you to mess it up. Although if you flash those .sbf I suppose it's pretty simple but still... You understand.
There are some apps that doesn't support pre-2.2, BTW.

Guys, stop flashing custom roms and confusing other people, custom rom does have 2.2 but it's custom and it prolly overclocks the cpu at high voltage which can be a reason for you to have battery drainage.
We yet can't say anything about 2.2 update because we haven't recieved it officially just yet. What i said in my previous posts is by looking at other phones such as Samsung Galaxy S (quite similar to defy cpu wise) and then when i looked at benchmakrs (performace) of it running on 2.1 and 2.2, there was a great difference and in 2.2 it performed quite well.
So don't consider custom roms as real updates, they are totally modified with tons of changes.
Right now, we don't even know if the stock speed of official update for defy is 1GHZ or 800MHZ...and if it's 1GHZ then i believe the battery will run out faster but we just can't say anything unless we get the official update OR a user who already had the official motorola update on defy (o2 germany users) can actually tell us the difference between 2.1 and 2.2

With regards to performance, my Defy performed well enough under 2.1 that I haven't noticed any difference.
That's not to say that Froyo hasn't necessarily improved matters, just that I haven't seen any practical difference so far - benchmarks are all well and good but they don't make any difference to how a phone works on a day-to-day basis.

You're guessing and you're wrong.
Firstly, when I did flash a custom ROM, true enough it came with the means to allow you to overclock the CPU but it wasn't automatically activated, you still had to do that yourself.
Secondly, as I said before, I've tried more than one Froyo ROM and the on I'm using now is not a custom ROM but the battery life is still just as poor.

Maybe your cpu is running on different voltage? because OS has got nothing to do with battery life tbh lol
you can have millions of programs running in the background because of your custom rom?
Maybe I spoke too soon...
I don't know what's changed but I'm ~32 houes since charging my handset and have (according to DefyBatt) 55% of my battery left.
The battery's not new, so I don't get why it would need to bed in on the new ROM, yet that seems to be the key
For me, the biggest difference is the new apps that require 2.2 - primarily Chrome To Phone, which I love.
Other than that, 2.2 is faster than stock 2.1, but if you had JIT enabled on 2.1, then the difference isn't huge.
I haven't noticed any difference in battery life.
Basically, it's a minor performance boost, and the ability to use some programs which I couldn't with 2.1.

[Q] Planning to buy this phone

Hey guys i'm planning to buy motorola defy in next month. As i've to stick to this phone for 3 years i want to ask you some questions or clear my doubt. 1. Will this phone get android 2.2? 2. If I flashed with custom rom of 2.2 will adobe flash 10.1 work on it? 3. Is flashing this phone difficult or easy? 4. What about its sound quality? Is it better than galaxy 3 or nokia 5800xm? 5. Will HD games work on this device?
1,2,5: yes
3: easy
4: don't know, didn't have those phones to test the Defy against
There are a few 2.2 leaked ROMs, I'm using one myself and flash is running smoothly. The official update will be released in the second half of this month
Sound quality is good. The Defy is in every respect technically a high-end phone, comparable to Galaxy s i9000, HTC Desire HD.
Galaxy 3 is rather medium-class.
The only negative points IMO are that the screen is very reflective in sunlight and the camera could be better.
And battery performance is VERY unpredictable!!
You mean battery life not good?
Battery life is good comparing to other android phones. It is 2~3 days for normal use.
yes, the screen is a bit reflective, but if you set it bright enough, it's very nice! and battery performance is quite good, i get about 2 days with some gaming and 3G/wifi constantly on! the only thing i'm missing from this phone is full multitouch, as it has only two point mt, which can be disturbing in some games (like tap tap revenge). otherwise it's a very good phone, with great overclock/undervolt potential!

questions regarding DEFY
I heard that defy bootloader is locked hence custom rom is not possible for defy then how come custom roms are available in dev thread?
They're not true custom ROMs, they're just standard ones with some of the stock apps removed and others pre-loaded.
The bootloader is locked and that's why, for example, CyanogenMod isn't available for the Defy or Gingerbread.
Thank's Guys!
I'll buy a defy tomorrow, and this answers helped me to make my choice (principally
the battery time).

2.2 is already out, ans cm7 using 2.3 will probably get a final stable release version soon
I'm curently running CM7(beta 3) and it's doing pretty well.
Though there are still some things to be fixed, it is definitely an increase of performance and battery life, and will be worth of updating once it is fully stable.

Most of'em are, as abovesaid, pretty much customized standart ROMs.
However, 2nd Init "hack" was recently intoruced, which kinda bypasses locked bootloader. Hence CM7 goodness.
At least you don't have to worry a single bit using DEFy in the rain

[Q] Why Root phone when I'm on Gingerbread already?

Is there even a point rooting my phone when its already Gingerbread? can someone tell me the general features I can get, and what are the best roms out there if i do root? thanks
The point of rooting is to open up a whole new world of customization. Once you root your phone, you can do a lot LOT more with your phone than you can now.
Just look at the choices of roms you'll have.
Believe me, rooting your DHD will be the best thing you'll do to your phone.
And as far as custom roms are concerned, there is no such thing as 'the best rom'.. it all depends on personal choice.
If you like the idea of trying different roms then you'll need to root.
You can get an idea from the screenshots in the ROM threads of how different your phone experience can be with custom roms.
(I started out rooting just for an easier way to take screenshots.)
Here is a page of screenshots from the CyanogenMod 7 rom I had on my phone a while back (plus some other wallpapers). As you can see, it is quite different. It's worth trying different roms if you like to tinker and improve the experience, be it visual, performance or whatever.
It can become an addiction or distraction though, so be warned. Good Luck.
It most certainly can become an addiction and distraction. I've got exams to worry about and my mind keeps going back onto this lol

One word - Customisation.
That's why you should root and try out different ROMs find out the mix that suits you perfectly rather than sticking to what HTC TELLS you you want.

Popular roms are Android Revolution HD, CyanogenMod, Leedroid, Rcmix, MIUI, Coredroid etc...

With a rooted phone, you can get total control of your phone,
With stock ROMs they have limited some functions, but once you rooted you can get rid of those limitation. For simple example, you cant take screenshots of your phone without rooting.
And secondly you can install custom ROMs on your phone and even overclock your processor.
Hope this helped,
Thanks!
As pointed out, you can overclock your phone. The DHD can run up to 1.9Ghz !
I normaly have mine running anything up to 1.6
Plus overcocking means that the phone can be underclocked for when the screen is off, saving battery.
As for ROM's. I have traditionally always run CyanogenMod as it's a nice, slick, fast experience.
If you try CM, then don't forget how much you can customise your screens using different 'Launcher' apps. I use ADW Ex but Launcher Pro is another popular one and there's plenty more. Most have downloadable themes(skins) too.
Oh, and if you really want some fun, try one of the new full Sense 3.0 rom's to see how fansy sense can get. I'm running Virtious Unity at the moment and it's the first Sense ROM I've run since I first rooted the phone ! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115312

[Q] Google Goggles Camera Bug (1.8.1)

Hey there guys, I've been using XDA-Developers for a long time, it certainly is the #1 source of info for us android users and modders. Finally registered myself in the hopes I can get some help with an issue I'm having atm. While using Google Goggles 1.8.1 in Snapshot mode the camera will be all messed up showing a greenish deformed image, as a matter of fact looks like a thermal camera or something similar. If I press the button to take the snapshot, strangely it works fine, if I go into continuous mode it doesn't have the same problem, works fine.
I'm using the Beta 14 of Cyanogenmod 9.
The camera application works perfectly, just google goggles is messed up for some reason.
Anybody ever seen this problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for the fast response. I'll certainly try that, did you have that experience too or is it just a guess since I'm using a Beta ROM? Thanks again.
there isnt and may never be an official ics rom for the vision, this means the developers have not had the proper drivers for the camera so it is hacked together on all ics roms. these roms have come a long way over the past six months or so but any app using the camera may never work 100%
the best ics roms for the g2/dz (in my opinion) are elitemod and mimicry, you can try one of those and see if google goggles works fine or just move down to 2.3x

I hope that's not 100% accurate, cause I don't see why the G2/DZ couldn't have an official ICS release, I mean, it's hardware can support it perfectly so what would be the reason? Anyway, I'll revert later to 2.3x and see how Google Goggles handles, but even if it works fine I'll get back to the latest beta of Cyanogenmod 9, everything's been working perfectly so far, aside from this Google Goggles problem, and if it never gets solved I can still live with that, I usually don't even use it, just wondered why it wasn't working as it should. But thanks for the info so far.

it is sad but true, there may be loads of reasons for no official update but the main one may simply be htc has decided they want us to move to a newer phone, even if hardware supports the latest firmware they will must feel if they keep supporting old phones people will not buy their new ones. even if this is an incorrect assumption the g2/dz (in my opinion) still is the best phone to date so I wouldn't update anyhow.
like I said have fun with gingerbread for a while and then consider elitemod ics or mimicry, those are the only two ics roms that I like. but right now I'm back to cm7 for a while, I too like a working camera, and by working I mean to the quality gingerbread cameras work on the vision.

You're right, and I totally agree, I won't update my G2/DZ anytime soon, it still serves me more than well and I love the physical keyboard. Some people don't care about it, but I like to run some emulators, genesis, snes and the likes and to play using the physical keyboard instead of touching the screen is a whole different world. Also, I don't see the point of having a big screen latest smartphone when you lose like half the screen when you have to type cause of the virtual keyboard. Who knows, if HTC ever releases in the future a Desire Z 2 maintaining everything that's great about the G2/DZ but upgrading to the latest hardware, I might buy it. Oh, and thanks for the compliment.

it is sad but true, there may be loads of reasons for no official update but the main one may simply be htc has decided they want us to move to a newer phone, even if hardware supports the latest firmware they will must feel if they keep supporting old phones people will not buy their new ones.

Same name and same surname? Wow, never seen another one like me lol. Thanks, I always do, love to mod my phone, just bought a new 1800mAh Mugen Power Battery for it, changed the xeon led for a new one (original went faulty) and now I'm just waiting for my new Zagg InvisibleSHIELD replacement and new rubberized cover. =] Hey, do you run your G2/DZ overclocked? I'm running right now at 1.5GMhz max and the original 800Mhz minimum using the SmartAssV2 Governor. The battery life on ICS is WAAAAAAY better than it was with Ginger.

Marketing, it's old enough to the point that it's more economically feasible without as much *****yness from consumers to not bother providing drivers/etc for it when consumers can just buy a brand new model to get ICS.
I'm in the same boat though, my camera is 'functional' I can see the screen just fine and can take a picture, it just not as feature-packed or as high quality as it was with gingerbread.

Exactly, but even so the Pros of running ICS on the G2/DZ easily surpass the Cons. I for one can say my battery life at least doubled, and the system runs way more smoothly than it used to with Gingerbread. I guess now we can only hope that those great guys at the development teams can come up with solutions for everything, who knows? Maybe a newer model from HTC with ICS has a camera driver compatible with the G2/DZ. Until then I'll keep experimenting with the Betas till I find the best solution.

well in regards to battery life and other performance benefits you can mainly thank the Rom creators for that. I've no doubt that if you tried to use a pretty much 'stock' configuration of ICS the battery life would be much worse and performance wouldn't seem quite a nice. Most of the benefits I enjoy in my current ICS rom is primarily credited to the rom's creator as he did quite a number on optimizing it specifically for the G2/Vision.
