Hacked Samsung Omnia HD shows how easy it is to make a Windows Phone 7 device - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

Samsung has now admitted that the Samsung device shown of running Windows Phone 7 at MIX10 recently was in fact a hacked Samsung i890 Omnia HD.
"The launch was from Microsoft, not Samsung, and they used the i8910HD to demo Windows 7," said a Samsung spokesperson.

IF you are a mega size company like Microsoft..... They threw in a 1Ghz processor and a multi-touch screen, and it is their software...... Let's hope it will be easy for the chefs to cooks something up for the older devices once 7 becomes available

That's a theme, and bears no relation to actual WP7S, other than in looks. It will not run WP7S software. It is not, in any way, WP7S.

You are wrong mate... Microsoft had already stated that no device that was available at the time of the Windows Mobile 6.5 announcement would receive an offical upgrade.
So there's absolutely no chance Windows Mobile 7 will be available for the HD, only the HD2 and future PDA releases

For your information, I have spoken to a few friends on xda who have been members of the forum longer than I have and carry good knowledge... they have also confirmed this fact and advised me it's unlikely to happen.

Mastoid is right..!
The biggest glitch is the HD's hardware as it is incompatible with WM7 in that the new OS requires a capacitive (multi-touch) screen.
When hardware restrictions are involved, not even the top XDA members can help.

If you watch the WM7 UI on youtube..you are gonna see them using the touch pro of choice and some other phones to promote windows mobile 7..so it is obvious that touch pro and diamond users are going to have WM7 on their phones too.

Time will tell as it is now nothing more then a waiting game.
The full capacity of WM7 can only be unleashed through the proper devices. Diamond and touch pros are not these devices and if WM7 makes it to these devices in some shape way or form, it will be interesting....
The argument in question was specifically dealing with whether or not the HD could support Windows Mobile 7 - it has been justified that it cannot due to hardware requirements... i rest my case.

You have not made a valid argument yet you have some weird standards of what it means to have the "hardware requirements" then.
Touch Pro has 528 MHz so does the Diamond, HD, Xperia X1, and the TP2. Devices with 528Mhz and above, are ABLE to run Windows Mobile 7. Enough said ^^

just that you're not unleashing W7's potential.
It's just like having a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which supports HD videos, on a currently-officially-running-under-Windows-Mobile-6.5 HD2 , or if this is unclear, another example: running Windows 7 on a PC with 200Mhz processor and not-touchable-monitor
here's a major requirement that HD not fulfilled:
Touch: Multi-touch required

unless you provide resistive multi-touch software and reconfigure our HDs and so on.
WM7 will not be coming to the HD officially or unoffically, case closed....some of XDA's wonder developes may be able to get some builds working on HD, but these will be limited and you will never see wm7's full potential. It would like having a ferrari, but being restricted to 1st gear and 30 miles an hour. May look nice on the HD, but whats the point of having it

Why Dell does WM7

Hello Folks,
I just wanted to chime in again to offer an "offending viewpoint" about the whole Dell debacle.
I personally think that we are looking at a situation similar to Samsung's here. Keep in mind that both these companies also do business with Microsoft on a much larger front, being desktops and laptops.
At last years MWC, Samsung delcared that it was fed up with WM and wanted to port the whole Omnia series to Symbian. They even showed off an Omnia HD - and gave it all up afterwards.
IMHO, the coincidence is clear - could it be that M$ is using desktop Win pricing? What do you think?
P.S. Odd example is HP...
I don't really know what you're talking about, and it seems like a goose hunt to find the articles you're referring to. At the same time, I'm interested in what you're trying to say. Mind getting a few links and adding it to your post?
What Dell Debacle?
Why is Samsung so upset at MS, and they released the Omnia II with WM 6.5...it could have easily been Android?

Hi,
sorry for the long awayness.
At last year's mobile world congress, Samsung openly stated: we are fed up with WM for consumer, and are moving our consumer series to Symbian. They then anounced an Omnia HD.
A few weeks later, it was renamed to i8910. Samsung's press team never told a good reason -> strange.
Should I look up the relevant articles on my site?
You want to look up your own articles on your own site?
Be my guest.
Hi,
here we go - the original announcement at last year's MWC:
http://tamss60.tamoggemon.com/2009/02/16/samsung-omnia-hd-hands-on/
Then, the renaming announcement:
http://tamss60.tamoggemon.com/2009/04/14/samsung-austria-talks-omnia-hd/
Looks strange to me...
Tam
They renamed it because they thought that consumers would get confused - Omnia HD contained the word "Omnia" and therefore buyers would assume they're getting WinMo when they're not. So they renamed it to prevent that confusion from happening.
As for Dell, the Dell Axims were running on WinMo. Then they left it for a while and now they want to release a new phone with WinMo on it. Nothing special or wrong about it.

WP7 license pricing has already been leaked on sevearl blogs (like gizmodo.com)
It's not that expensive and far away from the desktop pricing.
How do people come up with crazy ideas like this?
Hi,
that WM7 is cheap, does not surprise me - I wouldnt want it for free on my XPERIA X1. In fact, I didn't even bother with WM 6.5.
But: then, explain me, why Samsung staff told me that they wanted to rebadge the whole Omnia series to Symbian, and that all future phones would be Symbian based?
Something else: Symbian was founded because Microsoft didn't want to give WIndows CE to Psion for free...another fun detail from the past...
Samsung announced their transition to Symbian when, last year? What did WP7 look like at that time? Why couldn't they change their minds? Also, why aren't you suggesting conspiracies when you see Android and Bada powered Samsung phones?

Windows Embedded Handheld 7 - soon :)

Source : http://news.softpedia.com/news/2-Ne...ors-of-Windows-Embedded-Handheld-144898.shtml
Microsoft has announced two new Windows operating system releases planned for delivery this year and the next, both essentially flavors of the same platform. The plain vanilla version of Windows Embedded Handheld will be launched in the second half of 2010, while its successor, Windows Embedded Handheld 7, will drop one year later, in the second half of 2011. The two upcoming Windows releases have the new Windows Embedded Handheld platform at the core, announced by the Redmond company on June 17th, 2010.
its could be the rise of the dead for Winmo
Looks pretty awesome but also looks like its aimed at tablets. The videos all show a tablet style device and not a phone.
A little more info here:
http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/press-releases/microsoft-outlines-commitment-future-enterprise-handheld-devices
...with a picture of a PHONE about half way down. Looks similar to a b.berry.
Yep, I saw that already, but it's all but clear... All the hardware they present are featuring a tiny screen and a huge keyboard, just unlike the recent touch phone PDAs.
It's unclear either if it will be a sequel from Windows CE or Windows Mobile.
BTW, the connection with Windows Phone 7, or even a possible Windows Mobile 7 pro, isn't established at all.
For now, it just looks like microsoft suddenly realized that WP 7 announcement has frightened their professional customers and try to get them back with some really unprecise project...
Wait and see, but what I'm reading across the Net shows a strong tendency of many users to run towards Android instead.

Well, that trend started way before anything was announced about WP7. And it is reinforced by the fact that all new handsets are released with Android. Also, operators like Verizon are pushing Android like crazy and there have been numerous accounts of people being advised in VZW stores that WM is worthless crap and they shouldn't buy it.

The Windows Embedded Newsroom has articles that state that the first edition will be based on WM6.5 and the 2nd Version will be based on the same core as WP7. Whether or not they stick with the 'mobile' tag for the OS is unknown.
See this link for the a page that goes into a little detail: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2010/jun10/06-17EnterpriseHandheld.mspx
It's not correct, The first edition will be a successor of WM6.5.3 (based on Windows CE 5), the second will be something we can name WM7 based on the Windows CE 7 core.
They skip WinCE 6 as base for this specific OS.
Similar choices you can see for Windows Auto or Windows NavReady.
Our actual application based on .NET CF 3.5 will probably continue to work on the new platform.
This looks hot... can't wait to try it. I wanna see more pics
To general I say!

[Q] Is it posible to downgrade a windows phone 7 or android to windows mobile 6.5

Is it posible to install windows mobile 6.5 on an windows phone 7 or android phone ?
I ask this because we are dropping support for windows phone but it is going to take a while for us to do the port to android and our clients are having trouble geting devices that can run our current software.
Regards Christian
Nope. Not possible.
Why would you expect your customers to hack their devices to install WM 6.5 just to run your company's software (which would kill their warranty for the device) even if it was possible?
Huh! Why would someone buy a windows phone only then to install wm 6.5 or whatever? If they wanted 6.5 they would not have bought a windows phone 7 in the first place and bought the older phones.
People seem to think phones are like PCs... They aren't.
Downgrading is easy. Bring the WP7 devices back and get HD2s or Tilts/TouchPro's, etc. Samsung Jacks or Epix if you're into that formfactor.
I would never expect anyone to do this on my request
it was actulaly the client that asked me My only reply was that I would look into it
regards Christian Andersen
Its not possible but on the bright side, there will be a big update in Jan

why are you dropping support for 6.5? and why not make a wp7 port, from what I've heard, it's not that hard.
There are a few reasons that we cant port to Windows Phone 7.
The main reason is the same reason why.
Firefox and Skype will not be avalible on Phone 7.
Our code base is cross platform and is written in C++.
and even if we wanted to develop in something like silverlight or XNA the lack of database and sockets would stop our application dead.
So we are dropping all windows development and are moving our mobile platform to Android and IPhone

Optimally, I'd want a proper d-pad on the front, but I think those are a thing of the past.

Dear programmers make please wp7 on samsung i900
As it is possible to organize fund raising - the raised money will be received by those who the first will make windows phone 7 on i900

That normally there were games and programs

To begin with will suffice
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who for fund raising write in kommentrarijah(comments)-offer for yours i900 be not greedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excuse for my bad English
It is below the minimum specs for WP7 so it most likely cannot be ported.
The only WM6.5 Phone that could receive WP7 is the HD2, as it was the only one to feature an ARMv7 processor (to my knowledge), which is a requirement for WP7. And it's not a requirement that can be hacked around.
Could you please tell me you what you thought when you were writing such a stupid request?
