Oh damn, HTC Sync not compatible with Win Server 2003! - Desire General

Believe it or not, this is the operating system that I use as my main system and have been doing so for years!
But alas HTC Sync is not compatible! Come back Microsoft AS haha.

LMAO Why the hell would you use Windows Server as a personal OS XP

Yeah I know! I originally installed Win 2k way back when, just as a test system and slowly I started installing everything on it and then upgraded to 2k3, most things that I use have been compatible up until now!

Is it just that the installer won't run (ie says your OS is not compatible)?
If that's the case, you can fix that with Installshield. You just need to change the platform restrictions as many desktop apps will refuse to install on server OS. I used to run 2008 server as a 'desktop' in the days before Windows 7.

Ah, I remember someone talking about that a while back. Will have to give that a go and see how it goes.

Just installed a trial version of Install Shield; any idea how I would go about actually changing these permissions??

I'd use Orca (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa370557(VS.85).aspx) from (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa370834(VS.85).aspx)
It might be possible to do using installshield too, but haven't used it.
You want to check the LaunchCondition table for something related to operating systems supported.

I'm guessing both of these programs would require an MSI of the application as opposed to an EXE, which is what I have.
EDIT; Just got it from the temporary folder. Will try again.
2nd EDIT; Removed the install conditions, but an another error is generated- something about a CA_Driver. Seems everything except server 2000 and 2003 are not supported - 2008 is though (!)

Hi, did you ever manage to install it? I'm stuck on the same error as th eprevious post.
Cheers,
Dale

[PROJ] Prescription Medicines Manager v0.9.0 17-03-2011

This app is designed so that you can keep track of any medications you take on a regular basis.
When you last ordered a particular drug, how many you currently have to hand, which surgery the repeat was requested from and which pharmacy filled the prescription.
It is designed to be used for multiple patients, surgeries, pharmacies and doctors.
It was initially an Access database but I thought that migrating it to my PPC was a challenge I might be able to complete.
There will also be the ability to log doctor's appointments as well, hopefully.
All data is currently stored in an SQL-CE database.
For reasons I am currently trying to solve, when you open any secondary form with a data table and then return to the main menu you are unable to go back into any other form again.
Changed to a tabbed layout, screen shots attached.
09/02/2011
New version attached with new format SQLCE.
17-Mar-2011
Latest version attached
All data entry and editing working - I hope.
08-Apr-2011
Latest version, autoscroll and popup SIP.
Possible dependant files.
I am coding for CF2.

Thank you!
These records can be life-saving if you have them with you at the right time. I have tried many systems of keeping track, but rarely managed to have anywhere close to this much information on hand.
I have not had time to try it out properly so I do not yet have any comments or suggestions. For now, I just wanted to say THANKS!
Glad it's going to be if use to someone.
Hopefully by the end of tonight I will have a new version up with the ability to add records to each of the tables. No interlinking yet and at the moment editing is also broken but I am getting there.

Don't feel rushed on my account. It's great that you're interested in this project, whenever you finish will be soon enough.
Meanwhile, I'll play with it and start planning how to "feed" it my information.
Have you considered some sort of encryption? It just occurred to me that it will hold a lot of very personal information.
Again, thank you.

I know next to nothing about programming, but would the PC editor you wrote for the W Watcher calc work for this project? That might make it easier for the user to input the information AND save you some programming...
(BTW: I was very impressed with how quickly you developed those applications! Very usable and no charge for fast delivery!)

Unfortunately the WW editor is designed for an XML file and this app keeps everything in an SQLCE database. I am trying to find a nice, useable and, more importantly, free desktop app to edit these files and am trying a couple out at present.
While a purely PC based editor would be easier from a WM coding point it would stop the app being completely mobile and standalone.
New version added to post 1.
You can now add records.
For desktop managemnent try
SQLCE Desktop Manager
FlyHoward SDF viewer
Neither of these seem to be free though the second one does have a 14 day trial.

Of course!
Sorry, I got tunnel vision and forgot the project's purpose.
What am I missing?
I have been unable to run Prescription Medicines Manager on my HTC 8925 (Kaiser) with WM 6.5.x.
When I run the EXE all that happens is that the WM wait animation plays indefinitely until I switch to another application.
Since I play with this phone a lot, I hard reset it to clear any lingering results of my modding (it's a spare phone, so no great loss). Before installing other programs, I ran PMM again, but the same thing happened.
I got the same results with an even older HTC phone running WM 6.1.
SQL desktop applications
I found some free SQL desktop apps. I was only able to get one, SdfBrowser, to read MedicalRecords.sdf and all it allowed was viewing the structure and creating a query.
I'll keep looking, but I agree with you that being totally portable is very important for this project.

I installed SQL CE with no errors but got the same lack of results. The phone did become VERY sluggish and Task Manager still showed "prjMedicalRecords" running as a process.
Does prjMedicalRecords.exe need to be installed?
I just executed it from the SD card, and then tried it from the device memory. I placed MedicalRecords.sdf in the same directory each time.
Update: After about 5 min of the WM wait animation spinning, got the following error message:
"File or assembly name 'System.Data.SqlServerCe,Version 3.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=3BE235DF1C8D2AD3', or one of its dependencies, was not found."
I opened the SQL CE .CAB file and it DOES contain "system.data.sqlserverce.dll" it is meant to be installed to "%InstallDir%" and the rest of the DLLs go to "%InstallDir%\v3.5". I used file explorer to look in those directories (%InstallDir%="Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition") but did NOT find "system.data.sqlserverce.dll" in either dir.
I copied the DLL to "%InstallDir%\v3.5" and ran the program again. The same results occurred.
After soft reset, copied the DLL to "%InstallDir%" and ran PMM again. The same thing happened, long wait, then error msg.
I am falling asleep now, but will try re-installing .NET 3.5 and running PMM again. I'll let you know what happens.
I had gotten the same error before installing SQL CE but did not connect the error to PMM so I ignored it. This time nothing else was happening on the phone.
Apologies for not giving the initial steps, I am new to development and forget others need to be given the assumptions.
SQLCE needs to be installed, as you have done. PMM is just an exe, copy it to the device.
PMM and the SDF file need to be placed in \Program Files\prjMedicalRecords on the device itself. At the moment this location is hard coded and is on my list of things to do to make it "moveable". HTH
New version in post 1 that is now independent of location, just make sure both exe and SDf are in thhe same place.

Sorry, Deedee. It still does the same thing.
.1. I put both files in device memory (just in case): \Program Files\prjMedicalRecords\
.2. Tried to re-install NET framework 3.5--it refused to install in either device or card memory, saying the same version was already in ROM.
.3. Re-installed sqlceppcwce5armv4i.cab
.4. Ran prjMedicalRecords.exe
After the same delay, it gave the same error.
It also gave a NET error that, because of the delay between program launch and errors, I did not associate with Medical Records before, but it only occurs after I have launched prjMedicalRecords.exe:
"The application failed to load required components. If the .NET Compact Framework is installed on a storage card, please ensure that this card is in place and launch the application again. If this fails, a re-installation of .NET compact Framework is recommended. Support info: -2147483643 (80000005)"
Thank you for your continued interest.
Not sure what the error is pointing to but I am coding for .Net CF v2, CAB in post 2, try installing this.
OK, finally tried this on a virgin device, without using the "debug" option in VS2005 to copy the files and discovered that .NET CF2, along with SQLCE 3 and SQL CE 3 replication is needed.
All CABs are in post 2.
There is a new version hopefully out this weekend with the ability to log patient medications and doctors appointments.
Editing is still on the road map, as is deletion.
New version in post #1, CAB format as well.
Make sure all the dependencies are installed, for me this has been .NET CF2 and the SQLCE cabs.
There are bugs I am aware of but please list anything and everything. As this is my first real App any feedback is welcome.

Install Homebrew Apps in Mango Beta & Resumible Apps

INSTALLING HOMEBREW APPS
Ok, so I figured out how to get a homebrew app installed that has "INTEROPSERVICES".
NOTE: Most apps still don't load/work, but at least they can be installed. So, maybe someone can figure out what to do from here. In fact, the only app that works properly that I've tested is Navigator Select. Granted this app is probably signed with a cert or what ever because it's from an OEM.
Instructions;
1) Extract the XAP using 7Zip/WinRAR/etc.
2) Find WMAppManifest.xml & open it in an editor (Wordpad/Notepad/VS/Word/etc.).
3) Delete the line "<Capability Name="ID_CAP_INTEROPSERVICES"/>"
4) Save the file.
5) Compress all files from XAP into a ZIP
6) Rename ZIP to XAP
7) Install
RESUMIBLE APPS
Also, I found this article.
In order to make an app resumible, we'll edit the same file as above, but this tome we're going to add "ActivationPolicy="Resume"" to the "<DefaultTask Name="_default" NavigationPage="PivotPage.xaml" />" line so it looks like "<DefaultTask Name="_default" NavigationPage="PivotPage.xaml" ActivationPolicy="Resume"/>". Save file compress everything to ZIP & rename to XAP same as above. Now install apps using what ever side loader you like. I used "Tom XAP Installer".
NOTE: DON'T use the resumible hack on Navigator Select, at least on Mango. Otherwise it'll just show a black screen if you open it from the start menu/app list when you have a map open. You can still use task switcher to open it, but just not worth it. Than again this could be a Mango problem with the resume hack.
Anyone out there with a T-Mobile USA HD7 happen to have WPDM from Schaps installed & no Mango Beta? If so, can you see if you can copy out the TMOUS Cert that should be on your device. I'm on Mango, so cant. I want to try to sign a homebrew app with that cert & see if it'll work on Mango Beta.
I rolled back but have the HTC 7 Pro, so I can send you that cert, maybe you can edit it so it works with the HD7?
Glad to see you working on this btw .

Thank you, it shouldn't matter which HTC device it comes from. The main issue is I'm on T-Mobile so for my device has T-Mobile's OEM cert on it where your 7 Pro most likely doesn't. Probably has a Verizon OEM or for what ever OEM you're on. Your device might have an HTC Cert though. The main thing I'm looking for is a cert that's trusted & allowed INTEROPSERVICES access as OEM's/Manufacturers are the only ones allowed this atm. This is why Navigon Select works even though it has INTEROPSERVICES. I'm hoping I can use the SDKCert Signer tool & an OEM cert to sign the dll's/mui's in the XAP with.
I'm on an unbranded HTC 7 Pro. If you walk me through extracting whatever certs you can use I'm more than happy to do it.

Okay, you'll need WPDM. Install that to your pc/laptop. Once you run it the first time, it'll prompt to install TouchXperience. Open TouchXperience on your 7 Pro. Now WPDM will sync with it. Now open the file manager in WPDM on your PC. The certs should be in \windows or one of it's sub directories. I don't remember exactly where I saw them. Try to find one with HTC or Test in the file name. You can than copy if & paste it into windows explorer somewhere to zip it up & upload it here.
Unsigned app limit
Any idea which homebrew can get rid of the unsigned applications limit on Mango?
I am afraid of removing all my unsigned apps for nothing
Before following the OPs suggestions I was not able to deploy Navigon Select onto my device. After editing WMAppManifest.xml I was finally able to deploy it again. Sadly it won't work. After startup it tells me that it can't complete the registry process due to not being able to connect to the network. Pitty.

In order to deploy you have to edit that file I listed in the OP. I've got v1.3 installed as US maps only works with v1.3 & is what the map loader software came with.
EDIT: Whoops, v1.4 is what i have installed on Mango.

WPDM is broken, it doesn't work with the new beta tools. I uninstalled them and reinstalled WPDM but it crashes on load. Unfortunately I don't have the time to mess with this now so if anyone else can provide the certs that'd be great.

No. It requires you to have a Microsoft developers license registered with that machine (free to do) and installation of apps is also done via powershell.
Contrary to the above, you can sideload on RT.
The only real question is why? There isnt a market in downloading non store apps yet.
I think @mattman86 was referring to desktop software, rather than "modern" apps. He's still wrong, since you can use the jailbreak on RT 8.0 and then use desktop programs easily (instruction set architecture permitting), but you are correct that you can sideload "modern" apps, including or RT and on 8.1, pretty easily if you want to.
Powershell (as Admin): Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration (you can type "show-w" and then hit Tab and it will auto-complete).
Hit Enter and follow the instructions. You can use any Microsoft account, even a throw-away created for the purpose, to do the registration.
To install an app package (.APPX file), you can do it manually via Powershell but it's a *lot* easier to run the .PS1 script that should come with the .APPX. That script will take care of all the steps for you, in order, easily.

Thank you so much for that info master!!! Do you know, where to get some "metro"-apps without WindowsStore?
Are there any open-source or freeware appx or can we only take self-developed ones?
Can we take those .appx files from our already downloaded apps from store?
If i remember correctly either
Code:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\AppRepository
or
Code:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps

You can occasionally find homebrew apps here on XDA - the early versions of the Jailbreak tool for RT relied on one, for example - but I'm not aware of any large collection of them. If it's possible to re-construct .APPX files from the installed system (probably), it is something I have never attempted and have little interest in. Too much potential for piracy, too little reward.

[Q] Asus Vivo Tab TF600t, now what?

So I just picked up this vivo tab for $100 and it seems awesome, but I am curious what I can do with it now? I am use to android and rooting and stuff. Wondering what kind of cool stuff I can do with this. I don't know much about it, or even much of the difference between windows 8 and 8rt, other than you can't run many apps. Any advice would be awesome.
Well, if it's still running RT 8.0 you can run the jailbreak:
This would allow you to run unsigned ARM compiled desktop applications, plus a few .NET 4.x apps that are cpu agnostic. List of them here.
If your device has been upgraded to RT 8.1 and you would like to revert back to RT 8.0 to run the jailbreak (no released jailbreak for 8.1 as yet) see this thread. It also includes instructions on what updates to hide so it won't prompt/automatically upgrade to 8.1 again. That guide is of course for the surface but downgrading the Asus should be similar, you'll just need the image for your model.
For me personally with my Surface RT there is nothing I have seen of 8.1 or the store apps that require it that is worth more than having the jailbreak so I've stuck with 8.0.
Thanks for the info. It's all up to date, running 8.1. Sorry for being a noob in this area, what would unassigned ARM compiled desktop apps be? Like normal PC type apps?
Is there any way too load just normal 8.1 non rt?
I figure if the Walmart nextbook 8 can run actual windows then why can't this one?
Because secure boot cannot be disabled on this device.
Mandatory. Enable/Disable Secure Boot. On non-ARM systems, it is required to implement the ability to disable Secure Boot via firmware setup. A physically present user must be allowed to disable Secure Boot via firmware setup without possession of PKpriv. A Windows Server may also disable Secure Boot remotely using a strongly authenticated (preferably public-key based) out-of-band management connection, such as to a baseboard management controller or service processor. Programmatic disabling of Secure Boot either during Boot Services or after exiting EFI Boot Services MUST NOT be possible. Disabling Secure Boot must not be possible on ARM systems.

No, it won't be getting Windows 10 either, but supposedly some update will be coming to provide some new features... haven't heard what those will be.
Sorry I missed your response... unsigned (not unassigned) means software without a digital signature. Out of the box Windows RT will only run desktop applications that have been signed by Microsoft, and the jailbreak changes that to allow unsigned applications/executable files to run. So yes, regular desktop programs that have been compiled for ARM, or .NET applications that are CPU agnostic. See the list I'd previously posted.

I'm going to assume you're referring to the Windows RT Update 3. It's due out sometime in September, but so far we have very little official word on what it might contain.
I haven't been keeping up with the RT software so I'm not sure what is out there. I got Windows 10 on my laptop. I know we won't get that on anything with rt but I heard we would get some of the Windows 10 features.

[Tutorial] ]Install app offline / sideload app using powershell in windows 8.1 RT on surface RT

It's very sad and unfair that after the extended support ending in Jan 2023, surface RT users are not even allowed to download or install app from windows store anymore, such enormous company as Microsoft is just too rich and huge to not be evil, so i had to start to look for ways to get offline installers and manually install them. I can sucessfully install them and it shows on the windows store as installed. But the app could not run properly, i get a message saying the app needs to be repaird and it just stuck on repairing in the windows store. but i don't know whether it's because the issue of my system, as it's not the original system and I could not sync my license of the windows store in the app undates. As this is usually the reason that the app could not be updated in windows store. So maybe it could work on the original system? Somebody have a try?
You need to open your actual Microsoft Store.
Find the app that you want, get the link of the app.
go to this site:
https://store.rg-adguard.net
put the link in the box and click the tick
Look for and download the ARM or Neutral version of the app that you want, and it must be .appx or .appxbundle filetype.
You will also need to download other appx of the ARM or neutral as well. From the name you would possibly know they are the dependancies to run the actual app, so you will need to manually install them before install the actual app
I will use installing unpacker app for example. Run the powershell as administrater.
Install the dependencies first
just type in
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\Microsoft.VCLibs.110.00_11.0.51106.1_arm__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx"
after this one is done, do the same for the next one
Microsoft.WinJS.1.0_1.0.9200.20789_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\Microsoft.VCLibs.110.00_11.0.51106.1_arm__8wekyb3d8bbwe.Appx"
After you get everything ready,
just type in
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\unpacker.appx"
can get more details here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/appx/add-appxpackage?view=windowsserver2022-ps
and voila
if you get error when installing, just read the details and it's possibly you haven't installed the dependencies, which means you will need to use the same code above to install the dependencies first.

update:
Thanks to @dj_tech1 , I am pretty much sure that the evil Microsoft must have messed up the license after ceasing the support.
to be able to run the app, we will have to bypass the app license.
I have entered the test mode and also disble the DEP
BCDEdit /set - Windows drivers
The BCDEdit /set command sets a boot entry option value in the Windows boot configuration data store (BCD) for Windows.
learn.microsoft.com
To be able to do this, the secureboot has to be disabled beforehand
I have also acquired the developer liscense thanks to the help of
@jonnyprogamer at #19
I am not sure whether all the steps above will need to be achieved or not.
Now, we need to remove the signature file of the appx.
First, extract the appx/appxbundle to a working directory, then delete "AppxSignature.p7x".
open a new Powershell window to the working directory, then run the following command:
(I still use unpacker for example)
Add-AppxPackage -Register .\AppxManifest.xml
-Register must point to the path of the AppxManifest.xml
Have a read here: https://titleos.dev/bypassing-microsoft-store-licensing/
And voila!!!!
UPDATE:
with deleting the "AppxSignature.p7x". method, the app stop running after some time. I reinstall it and it can still run for some time.
Anyway, Thanks to @jonnyprogamer @camborita
Go with the method at #29 to test sign the appx and it will not have the issue that I had.
The solution is...Linux.

Look for and download the ARM or Neutral version of the app that you want, and it must be appx or appxbundle filetype.
You will also need to download other appx of the ARM or neutral as well. From the name you would possibly know they are the dependancies to run the actual app, so you will need to manually install them before install the actual app
After you get everything ready, run the powershell as administrater. I will use installing unpacker app for example
just type in
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Users\user1\Desktop\unpacker.appx"
can get more details here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/appx/add-appxpackage?view=windowsserver2022-ps
and voila

This is not the solution. After setup the app says that it cannot run because of the error and it has to be repaired. Only few apps have ability to display repair button. After clicking it nothing is getting repair. Also you cannot Update licenses in your Store account settings.
Setup without -Path command causes no "error badge" on apps list.
It worked before January 10'th. Now as above.
Still waiting for working solution...

Thank you so much for the reply. Do you mean you are with the stock system and upgrade to the latest with Windows update but you still cannot sync your ms store license?

The appx file is directly from the MS store, so I guess the problem is not really with the file, it might be more possible to do with the app license. if some surface RT still got the synced licences, i guess this might work for them?

Yes. There is an error after clicking sync button.
Surface has reinstalled windows after 10.01.23. After that all updates where installed, including Update 3. There were no differences on apps problems before and after the updates.

So do you mean you didn't get the updates from Windows update, but just get those updated via offline installers?

No, Windows Updates came from Windows Update. Windows Store updates only MS default apps, preinstalled with system.
First updates to 2016 rollup has to be installed manually.

OK, I see. Thank you very much. I will try to delete those preinstalled apps and install them again manually to see if these ones works.
Sorry, just another question. Before you reinstalled the windows, were you able to sync that app license thing?

So, could you install apps from the windows store before January even the app license could not be synced?

Oh, I see. Thank you very much. So it seems like it's the license issue, which needs to be worked around.
I think you can still get a developer license using powershell, maybe that will work

Ok i tested it on my Windows 8.1 x64 installation and they still gave me a free developer license, and in fact i was able to sideload AccuWeather for Windows 8, and it doesn't show the "X" symbol (error) in the start screen anymore!
The app still won't launch, but i think it's because of missing dependencies.
Here is how to get a developer license:
1) Run PowerShell as Administrator
2) Type Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration
3) Sign in with your MS account when asked, and it will give you the license immediately for free
So in theory i successfully installed an Appx (because i don't get the X showing up on the start screen), im gonna try to get the dependencies now, i attached a screenshot.
PS: I got the instructions from here: https://www.howtogeek.com/129535/how-to-sideload-modern-apps-on-windows-8/
I think we need to do some other stuff in order to successfully run the apps, probably the answer is in this document from MS:
Sideload Apps with DISM
learn.microsoft.com
or this from Technet (archived)
Sideload Windows Store Apps - Windows 8, Try, Test, Help | TechNet
Learn how to quickly and easily build your own Windows Store app to test sideloading apps in Windows 8.
