Quick question for desire owners - LED Torch - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone who has the desire confirm that the LED flash can be used as a torch. If i remember rightly there are apps in the store to use the LED flashes as flashlights since just after the droid came out. Can someone try one of these and confirm it works.

I believe the device needs to be rooted to allow the Torch app to work?
The desire was rooted earlier on today so I don't think it will be too far off!

Any updates on this?

Paul - the guy who rooted the Desire (from Modaco) - said that he'll be unable to post updates until the 20th April due to lack of Internet connection or something. So we gotta at least wait until he updates with the rooting procedure, then hopefully we can find out if the flashlight apps would work.

Please help me!! (new user)

Hello all, new to the forum. Have been reading loads of topics and the amount of info available is great.
If it is possible at all, I would greatly appreciate some help with my desire.... I bought an unlocked/unbranded desire in London. Was waiting for the OTA update for Froyo 2.2 and tried to download it when I was finally prompted to on my phone but it would not download, saying the file was corrupted. Hence I installed it manually by downloading and installing the update.
Now for some reason, my phone will keep going onto "car mode" which will turn on and off randomly and repeatedly. This turns the screen on (even if its in my pocket) and drains the battery. All calls go to speaker automatically. Called HTC customer support and they claim the desire is not even meant to have a car mode- whether that is them talking crap or not is another question. They also said I have voided my warranty by updating manually.
How do I disable this annoying car mode permanently? From my reading I believe it is impossible to root my phone now as it is already running froyo 2.2.
If someone, anyone can help me or give me any advice that would be great
Thanks again in advance
Ali
Someone must have an idea..... ?
if you look in the development section, there is a thread where i think they managed to downgrade the new hboot to 0.80 look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741672
i assume that will make your device rootable again using unrevoked
That is odd. I didn't think that the desire had a car mode built in but I know there is an app which does that as I have it. It's called Car Mode (surprisingly).
Presumably you haven't got that app (or something similar) installed which might be causing it? If not you could try installing the app, using it to disable car mode and then uninstalling it.

Oh ok thanks. I didn't know that as I haven't got Froyo yet. Clearly the HTC customer support team didn't know either!
I think Froyo OTA comes with support for Car Panel, but not the actual app. I had to install it manually. But it might be in the rom you used. Second the turn off. Go to +> shortcuts>Settings>Car Dock and you should see the options, including Auto Launch.

Now only problem left is that the screen still turns itself on for no reason.... my htc desire is on crack
Another problem with froyo it does my head in !

Is there a way to fix this? I don't understand what's prompting the screen to periodically (and randomly) turning on. Even when wi-fi is off.
And when it does turn on, i lock the screen - and it turns on again as if the phone is taking the piss out of me lol. Drives me (and i'm sure all other users experiencing this) insane!
Any fix?
People have said this happens when a couple of the data prongs on the USB/Charge cable are shorted. Not sure why it's happening for you. Have you tried a factory reset?
You might want to install the OTA 2.2 update again. To do that you will have to wipe the device completely using this code. (came from this thread)
*2767*3855#
Think before you give this code. This code is used for factory format. It'll remove all files and settings including the internal memory storage. It'll also reinstall the phone firmware.
After that it should be possible to update the phone to 2.2 again.

Orange Desire debranded and going to 2.3

Hi guys, i've had my orange desire debranded since i got it and its been fine, but recently been having issues with friend stream never updating and phone constantly telling me its nearly full despite me deleting most of my apps and clearing cache and the wifi going dodgy.
So was going to factory reset it, but thought since 2.3 is not out should I just install that instead. Has anyone with a debranded orange desire done this already and noticed any issues?
I heard some one mention that if using the sat nav the phone no longer charges up while using 2.3, because the USB power is limited?
I've gone from debranded orange phone running stock 2.2, to the official 2.33.
Noticed several issues: Random resets, resets if I use the camera whilst touching the screen etc.
Once you've upgraded, you can't go back either.
I would strongly recommend you avoid, until such time as it's possible to root / s-OFF / downgrade HBOOT to install FROYO again (if you experience problems).
EDIT: That beings said, you could install a pre-rooted version which wouldn't upgrade HBOOT. Your choice really
Hey.
I was orange Branded with FroYo. I used the unrEVOked method to root my phone, used alpharev to s-off and then I started playing with ROM's.
I did all this before the gingerbread came out.
I'm currently using RCMixS Evolutionary Sense ROM. Its a mix of sense 2.1 and Sense 3 (the stuff that's on the sensation and such) Its a great ROM.
With official Ginger you are gonna have internal memory problems.
I highly recommend rooting and using RCMixS. Its not perfect, as it suffers from the usual setbacks of Dev GB (such as camcorder image being stretched etc)
but if I'm honest it doesn't bother me.
I've also partitioned my SD card so I have an extra 1gb of memory that the phone can use for the system. It runs very fast now and it is a pleasure to use.
Have a look at this thread for info on RCMixS and see what you think. I made the leap and I have never regretted it. Everything has worked fine for me except for the obvious know bugs, which all GB Devs will be ironing out soon, as soon as they get hold of the Source Code.
Hope this helps.

Hi there, yes I have tried everything but my 'official' HTC charger will only now supply 'Charging USB' since GB update. (NB This only through the car dock, the car charger and lead still charges at AC)
It was an Orange branded Desire on 2.2 prior to update.
Everything else works great and I was glad to get rid of those stupid Orange game demos.
I went from Orange branded to standard HTC froyo, then to gingerbread and I've had no issues at all. No crashing, no reboots, just improvements.
BTW I've never rooted my phone.

Thanks all for the advice, I've read about a few having problems with 2.3 but also about the same number with people having no problems. The charging thing with sat nav is a little worrying for me as i use it quite often.
I'm going to wait a while I think for a more clear picture to come out.
Out of intreast though does anyone have a link to a down load of 2.3? I guess you have to be a member on the htc developer site inorder to download it.

From what I have been able to gather, it's a very few people having issues. I'll be doing the upgrade sometime this week or weekend when I have time as it's my wife's phone now and she doesn't want me messing with it when she needs it for work.

I'm not shocked with this change...I found using Google Navigation was taxing on the power supply with Froyo 2.2 as well, so this basically means it won't charge the phone, but it should keep it running when plugged into the car outlet. And when it comes to navigation, I rarely leave it running with the screen on anyway as I don't need to look at it constantly. I use it to find a route to an unknown destination for me and then only look at it when I'm unsure of a turn or similar. While the screen is off, the phone should still charge as it did on Froyo. If not, then you just need to run Navigation with a full battery or intermittently. Remember, it's a phone, not a full blown dedicated GPS device for navigation, so you can't expect it to run and work all day like a GPS.
I'm going to wait a while I think for a more clear picture to come out.

You don't need to be a member...they're just not making it available over the air to everyone due to removal of some settings, etc. But I gather any Desire user can download and install it, even those in the "non supported" regions.
Just to add, the removed wall paper and apps (teeter and flashlight) are included with the downloads as APK files should you need them.

Notification LED doesn't flash

The new message notification LED on my (new) LTE Gnex only flashes once or twice, just when the phone boots up. Doesn't flash when a new message arrives. I've tried disabling it, and re-enabling it in settings, but it just does not work. This does not seem normal, and I'm wondering if I need to return the phone, which I really don't want to do. I've already unlocked the bootloader and rooted, but still running the stock ROM.

Have you tried Light Flow from the Market?
This has worked with the stock ROM.
I personally use Trackball Alert Pro - MoDaCo ROM has suppport for this.
Just tried calling myself, and hung up. The LED isn't lighting up. But I have seen it blink for emails at least. Hmm.. maybe try light flow.

Have not tried any 3rd party apps, yet. First I wanted to know if there was a problem with my phone, or if this is "just" a bug. If others have this same problem, then I'll try a 3rd party solution. Thanks for the feedback.
Tried the same thing, called myself and sent messages with no led notification. Thought my led was broken but then installed light flow and it worked no problems.
Not sure how it was supposed to work stock but could not get it to work at all without a 3rd party app.
Without the app, the only option I could fight was pulse notifications which I tried turning on and rebooting but it never seemed to work.

Just tried light flow. When I tried the "test LED" function, my phone would no wake from sleep. Also got sleep of death when I got an email. Had to do a battery pull. Any solution for this?
I looked at Trackball Alert and it requires Paul's ROM, which I'm not ready to try (yet).
I noticed it doesn't light up when it's charging either. Is this normal behavior?
From what I've seen so far the stock light is a hit and miss for me. Only time will tell how they will improve this.

Well its not your phone....The light stock is stupid I have no idea why you would include a light that only flashes random times and only in white..... I had issues with lightflow crashing my phone when waking with several notifications flashing. Just bite the bullet an flash ARHD or Paul's rom they both support Trackball notification and it works very well!!

Yep. Probably don't have/use most apps that support it for me to notice it all the time.
I've been having the same trouble. Haven't seen the light in days.
I went back and revisited some of my settings. I had turned on the setting for the screen to "stay awake while charging." I unchecked it, and now my light is working again.
Now, it only ever comes on when the screen is off to begin with. It won't come on if the notification happens while it's already on.
But at least the light comes on when the screen is off now!
(And I really wish the blink rate was higher. You can look at it for several seconds between blinks, and think there's nothing and look away.)
So the change I made to the settings seems to have fixed the light issue. I have been properly getting notifications since I turned off the keep awake. Seems like an easy enough to fix bug as long as they know about it.
But now what I want is a faster blink rate. One second on out of every 6 or 7 seconds is easy to miss.

And is there any way to change it?
I was wondering this question too. Is there no way to change this? It seems very pointless to not have any options for when to turn it off/keep it on (5mins, 10mins, etc, never). If anyone knows of an app or setting that could fix this I'd be willing to try it, it's my one, huge complaint about this phone (even my 4 or 5 year old blackberry blinked forever without issues and battery drain). Are there no fixes on previous HTC devices?

all HTC devices is false, it may (don't own a sensation) just be the one series, my HTC desire HD kept blinking until the battery ran out.
not sure why nobody has fixed this but since most of the rom/kernal wizard's are playing with the one-X and have not fixed it i'd say it's not as easy to fix as we'd all hope.
it is of course utterly useless, if i'm playing a game or i'm at work the chance that i check my phone within 5 min of anything happening is slim to none a really mind boggling decision from HTC.
perhaps they just opted for cheaper notification LED's in the one series and this is there way of making sure they don't burn out any time soon.
is it not to do with the phone going into deep sleep?
Easiest solution is just install Missed Reminder from the marketplace. It will keep the LED blinking for as long as you want. Works a treat on my HOX.

hmm odd, i've had my desire HD blinking before i went to bed (couldn't be asked to check it) and it was still blinking in the morning, and there were many occasions where i just ignored it and it kept blinking for hours.
then again my desire HD was S-OFF with ARHD and another kernel within a week of when i got it, perhaps ARHD or the kernel changed that
Missed Reminder is not working on my One X with Stock O2 Rom
Tried "Missed Reminder" but it needd to be turned on each time I soft reser my devic, it doesn't auto start, and secondly it only works for sms and miss calls, there are tons of other important notifications like facebook, email, viber, whatsapp ,......
Tried light flow but it sucks on One X, waiting for working release, I believe this is the best approach
Tried other applications, same as Missed Reminder but it does autostart
So no soloution for One X for now apparently, and still waiting for working Light Flow
I just saw this thread, and recognized the problem I have, too.
Desire that I had before had persistent and bright notification LED, while HOX seems to be failing on it.
The only notification I get is when battery is fully charged (green LED).
There is no charging notification, or missed call notification, or received SMS/email notification.
First, I thought it was the ROM bug (RENOVATE 3), but I see now that it's hit others, too.
:crying:
Reading through the thread I realize there's nothing we could do to fix it?
Or I missed something?
Kinds of to blink or not to blink dilemma here.
Either sides would get some people complaining about it..

[Q] Update caused slow camera start from lock screen and slow to turn on

After upgrading from 4.0 to 4.1 I found that my phone won't switch on until I press the power button three times although sometimes it does switch on first go. Then, I installed the latest OTA patch to 4.1.1, software number 3.14.401.31 (international version) and found that accessing the camera from the lock screen, with security pattern enabled, is very slow. That is when you drag the camera to the unlock ring and release, the lock ring pauses for about 5 seconds before the camera starts up. This didn't happen before the last update.
So far I have taken the camera out of the unlock bar and rebooted the phone and turned off geo-tagging photos. None of these options helped.
If I turn off the pattern unlock then accessing the camera from the lock screen is normal so this appears to be something to do with accessing the camera with the pattern unlock enabled.
Hi,
I have encountered the same thing - seems like you're the only one who has reported it on these forums so far. I hadn't tried disabling the pattern unlock, thanks for the tip. I'll try this. But I'm quite unhappy about this new bug that just came out of nowhere with the 4.1 update, especially knowing that the camera quick start was one of the features HTC boasted about so much!
Yeah, not much on it at the moment but the upgrade is quite recent. Hopefully more people will find this thread and we can get some traction.
Same problem here, me and my wife. Wery annoing!

No factory resetting my phone didn't work. HTC rang me back and said that I need to return it to who I bought it from. In other words no fix and returning certainly won't prove anything. I think I'll just have to wait it out until it is fixed with another update ... hopefully.
Or maybe we should looking at getting an app that provides the same functionality?

I tried the factory reset too, to no avail. Seems like disabling the phone lock is the only solution, but that's not really what I would call a satisfactory solution, since I'm using a VPN on my phone and that requires a lock + I just don't want to go lock-free.
We need this issue to be known to HTC and hopefully a fix will come.
Ps I don't think this problem was present in the JB update, but only came in the small FW update that followed.

Yeah it only came in the small update after the JB update. But another problem that I'm having is that to turn my phone on via the power button, sometimes I have to press the power button three times. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes after the phone has been off for a while, I hit it once and nothing, hit it again, nothing and then on the third press it comes on. I'm not sure if they are related to the "quick" camera launch problem.
One work around for this bug, if you use your camera a lot, is to leave your camera in standby mode. That is turn your phone off while the camera is active and then when you hit the power button it will go straight to camera. I don't use this myself as I have the lock pattern on to prevent my phone from turning on in my pocket which is common on HTC phones
HTC support are a waste of space
I have this issue too. HTC told me to factory reset it, then when that didn't work they told me to return it to the store to be sent away for repair. They really don't have a clue at HTC support.
The phone was returned to Vodafone yesterday and the repair centre said "no fault found" What are they on!!! The Vodafone store confirmed the issue was still there.
I now have the phone back with no resolution.
Going to call Consumer and get some advice.
I have this problem too, quite annoying.
