Charging time - Desire General

How long does your Desire take to charge? Mine takes ages, gone up 40% in 2 hours, which is exactly the same as the discharge rate when I'm using it. I'm sure my Blackstone used to top up much quicker than that. More and more I think power management is screwy in this device.

Are you using the original charger and cable?
I used a different cable with the original cable a few days ago and after about 6 hours it had only partially charged. Using the original cable it does a complete charge in about 3 hours.

if u use usb charging, it takes very long, but should be done in around 5 hours as well. if its ac adapter, much quicker, about 2 ~ 3 hours.

AC-Adapter:
15% to 100% (15% = "Warning") : ~90mins
0% to 100%: ~2hrs
With USB I think you can (at least) double that time.

Mine currently has been on charge for over 3 hours from about 9% and this is via AC with the phone turned off. I should note that it is via AC through an ipod/iphone charger which is rated at 5v @ 1A so I guess I'm just a little concerned if the ipod/iphone charger is maybe charging it at 500mA instead of 1A.
I know it's not faulty as it charges my ipod touch much faster than pc USB, but I'm just wondering if the cable supplied on my desire is forcing it to charge at 500mA, thinking the ipod charger is just a pc usb thingy.
I'll look into getting a travel adaptor or a brandless micro usb charger off ebay soon but it just seems odd to not charge in the 2-3 hours that people are reporting off other 5v 1A power adaptors.

[Q] Slow Charge

Not sure if this is an issue, or if its standard. But here is what im facing.
A charge off the wall will get my Tmobile SGS2 to a full charge (from around 15%-20%) with the stock plug and cable in about an hour to an hour and a half. However charging from my laptop or from a car charger im only getting a total increase in battery 15% in an hour. I tried to use the stock cable with the laptop and got about 25% in an hour and a half. I tried to use the stock cable in my car and only got 7% in 45 minutes.
Anyone have any ideas?
When charging from the car or from a laptop, the power is limited to what the cable/charger can supply which might not be sufficient for the SGS2. For the car charger, you can try buying one that supplies more amps, but for the laptop, theres really nothing you can do, as it is limited by the USB cable itself.
Do you mean the USB cable or do you mean the actual plug & internal workings of the laptop? because i have tried several cables. And just also remembered that i tried the stock cable as well with crappy results.
you can buy a 2A charger, and it will charge a lot faster, that's what i use in my car
at home or office, i just use the regular charger, as i always carry extra battery packs
When you plug it into the laptop it only gives out a limited amount of amps unlike the regular charger that came with the phone. The one that came with the phone regulates the charge so that it doesn't overcharge your device or anything. The laptop USB plug is supposed to be meant for peripherals like a mouse and stuff so it doesnt give out that much amps, therefore charging slower than a regular charger.
I use the t-mobile rapid car charger, It can charge this beast in about 45 minutes. It also has a 2nd port for a 2nd device.
Deebo took your bike too?
Really?! I've never seen my charging current go over 700 mA, even with a 2 amp charger.
I'd happily give up some long-term lifetime for faster charging.

They have a home charger too that's a home charger plus car charger in 1. I use them in the cars but they're great for trips cause you have a 2 in 1 charger.
With 3 batteries and a external charger though, I never need a home charger and haven't even put this on a charger yet.
Just as most of the others have said here, the charge is going to be limited to what the source can put out. If you get another charger (2A charger) then it will be able to charger faster but you also want to be careful with using after market chargers there are some that can negatively affect your battery by overcharging which is when the phone gets fully charged but the charger does not ever stop with the flow of power to the device.
Ok Thanks all.
Guess i need a new car charger and something for the office.
Also did some crawling through "Mother of all battery life" thread found some good ideas there for making this thing last longer on the charge its got.
Im having the same problem my fone takes forever to charge...im pluged into the wall using the charger in the box n it took me no joke 7 hours to charge my fone!
Im on it rite now as its plugged i to the wall n im losing power instead of charging...i tested the voltage n its fine ...is tgere anythin i can do?

I, myself, actually haven't used the OEM charger that came with the phone. Although I did notice it is quite small and the phone battery is a 1850mAh (larger than normal) that might affect the charging rate. I am currently using the old HTC charger that came with my Sensation and it charges fully in about 2 hours. If you want a charger that charges your phone in an hour and a half, I recommend going into a T-mobile store and grabbing the Wallcharger they sell. It charges 33% faster than OEM chargers and does not harm your device nor kill your batteries.
You can find it by clicking here
Exactly same problem as OP.
OEM wall charger charges phone to full in couple of hours but laptop USB or car USB is doing at 10% / hour assuming you don't do anything on your phone but just leave it there to be charged. Otherwise you'll be losing battery rather than being charged.

As explained in previous post, this is due to limitations in the laptop USB drive and depending on what car charger you have, the phone might suck up more juice than it is able to provide.
so this is nothing a kernel or any other tweak can fix?

Yes, or if you have like an old microUSB charger from HTC or another Samsung phone (Samsung Vibrant) you can try using those.
the 2A chargers from BlackBerry are the best
So, you guys are seeing the phone draw over 700 mA (when the charger is capable)?
If I use my iPad charger (2A), I still top out at 700 mA, and the ~4 hours that go with it. :/
Even my 1A car charger tops out at 700 mA, that's why I thought it was a hardware issue.

Battery or Phone?

Friends,
Interesting observation here. For the last week of owning the SGIV phone, my battery life is awesome, however when
it comes to charging it takes *forever*. When I mean forever, I don't mean two to three hours, like almost 8-9 to get a full
charge.
11:30am est battery was at 17%. At 3:30pm est, battery at 47%. when charging.
Any ideas if its the battery or phone?
please advise,
tvos
It shouldn't take that long to charge. Mine charges with a way higher rate. So I guess it's a problem with your phone /battery

Proly an issue with the charger - i charged slowly from a computer outlet - but a couple hours later did the wall outlet (using a motorola charger and it was juiced up in a just few hours) - Might be related to the charger and/or usb cord in use.
Make sure you are using a 2A charger like the one that came with it
I was discussing this with a friend after I posted my concern.
Apparently, if you charge by usb from a computer source, the amp is lower hence, it will take three times longer.
If charged by wall outlet it won't take long for the phone to charge quickly.
Just in a half hour I decided to test this theory and it works faster at wall outlet.
Thanks people...

Use original charger in the wall outlet. Takes 2 hrs from 1%

not sure if this was mentioned in the FAQs and I did look.
Might want to add this in the FAQs - differences between the battery outlet charging vs. computer source.

Normal usb power is 5.1 volts at 1amp. Bigger battery chargers are normally 5.1 v but at 2amps.. that being tablet chargers and bigger battery devices.
Plugged into a comp and not into an outlet I think you get 1/2 an amp ( wayyy less then originally supplied and intended charger)
our s4 came with a 2amp charger. You can read the specs on the side of it.
if you were using a 1amp ac adapter which is what 90% of mobile phones have, then it would take significantly longer.
my battery charges in about a hour and twenty minutes using stock s4 charger and cable.

Any reason we can't use a generic or old charger ?

I have a couple of generic chargers I've been using with my note 2 for a couple of years. I realize these will charge slower than the samsung fast charge charger but is there any reason we can't use them or will they impact battery life (I would think they would increase battery life); i supect the answer is that they are fine but maybe battery technology has changed and there is some 'smarts' between charger and battery that would be damaged by these ?
No issue using your old charger except as you mentioned it won't be fast charging. I do not believe that the fast charging will hurt the battery. The fast charge only works for the first portion of the charge then the rate of charge slows to a trickle charge.
U can use any charger but i recommend to use any charger with 2amp output as it charges quick 40% in 30 mins insteas of 50%in 30 mins with original.
Original charger has two modes 9v and 5v it charges with 9v untill 50% and switches to 5v after that.
I think the unit i use is a sanyo 800ma 5 volt. I don't mind the slwo charge as long as it can't harm the battery. This is only used during travel and office; @ home I use the charger that came with the device.
You can definitely use another charger. Like said before it wont charge as fast. The adapter that comes with the phone will charge your phone at 9v instead of the normal 5v. If you use a different usb cable with the charger it will still charge at 9v. If you change the adapter, it will charge at the normal 5v whether you use the another usb cable or the one that came with the phone. The usb cable is just wires. The wall adapter is what determines how fast it will charge...

I haven't even try usb cable supplied with phone. Just using Samsung USB cable. Both short anyway so no advantage of using new one.
Using my iVoler cable from iVoler Car Charger that is Quick Charger 2.0 for my Aukey wall charger since it's 6 feet long.
Also using my Aukey cable for my iVoler, since it's only 3 feet long and I don't need a really long cable for my car charger. I can charge my phone to 100% even if I use Waze + GPS High Batt use (screen on all the time), Spotify + Bluetooth.
All charges at the same time under normal conditions even with different USB Cable (I even tried LG Cable from my Nexus 5). 1 hour 40 mins from 5% - 100%. 90% - 100% takes the longest time at 15mins - 25mins. 5% - 80% takes 1 hour.

I use a 3 meter USB 3.0 extension cable ($3) and it works fine to quick charge.

charging time battery ridiculous !

This is just ridiculous. My P8000 charging time is something like 12-14 hours no matter what charger or cable i use.
Im on ROM 20150725 and i just so amazed how slow the charging time can be. I also unlucky to have the first batch where there is no LED.
Amazing how this company can mess things up. So far i can say that this will be my last Elephone.
Does anyone else have this problem or a soultion that i can try?
Thanx
Mine only takes that long when I'm using a 2m usb extension cable else it takes about 4-5 hours. I would say you must have a fault if you have tried several different chargers and cables as no way should it take as long as that. Where did you buy yours?
I am using a 2.4 amps charger with 1.2 m USB cable and charging from 40% or 50% to 100% takes about 2 hours. I did not use the Elephone charger at all.
You may have a faulty device and should contact your distributor. I don't think this is normal behavior.
I timed my last charge and it took about 6.5 hours from 30-70%(with 2m extension + 1m cable with a 1 amp Dell charger) then another 2hrs 7mins with an original Samsung 0.7 amp charger to do 70-100% - I also have one of these 2.4 amp charging hubs but I think the p8000 only draws a max 1 amp current so not sure how long it would take on the hub(which I normally use for my Yoga pad and other bits and pieces.
Fix for slow charge for me was to wipe cache.
P6000 Pro 2GB - switched off - took 18 hours from flat to 27% last night until today. Previously thought charger to blame so tried another. It appears battery must be faulty (initially okay, but poor battery life).

A 3M cable on a 1A charger is not what speeds charging up... Try and use short and good quality cables.
And a 0.7A charger is way to small. Imagine you phone needs juice as well and when you do some stuff on your phone your charger output is reduced. And I bet under heavy use there won't be more than 0.2A per hour going into your battery with your 0.7A charger.
Try 2A chargers.
I actually don't mind the slow speed if I'm charging overnight, most I've got out so far is about 1.4A on my hub with good quality 1m cable.
Mine used to full charge for 2hrs and now its over 4 hours and the battery is really draining fast..
