Can one Gadget (AKA The Desire) do it all? - Desire General

Hey People, the more I use this excellent phone the more I wonder can it really replace all of my gadgets on a day to day basis?
I wrote a piece on my blog about this in detail, but what do you think?
Gadgets I use the most on a day to day basis are:
Laptop - Internet and E-mail
Camera
Sat Nav
Phone
PMP - Music and Video's
My verdict was 99% a yes, and close to 100%.
Any thoughts!

It can do VOIP/SIP over HSDPA extremely well with a little help from SipDroid which I just set-up. Yay, for the Desire. ^_^ And for cheap calls!!
As for the laptop replacement it's quite adequate for my morning commute to work but when I need to do something fiddly like setup my PBX I prefer to tether my laptop.
As for replacing everything else, yeah pretty much, although whether it can replace one's girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other is a matter for debate.

LOL since when has ones, Girlfriend/Boyfriend etc, been a gadget? (why do I feel like that will spawn innuendo?)

I bought because if this!
Finally AIO device
Internet and E-mail
Camera(before used camera)
Sat Nav
Phone
Music and Video's(before used MP4)

It could, if the battery technology was at a point where the phone could last a decent amount of time when playing videos, music, making calls and surfing. If you do everything on your phone it zaps the battery. That's why I'm keeping my cowon s9 for video/music use.

That's a valid point. I spend a lot of time on the road in my car, so a car charger helps with that!

yes i think that HTC DESIRE is the AIO device anyone needs. but the concern and main problem is here too....if i use all the features all day i only get up to the evening max...then charger is on

So would you compromise the look to interoperate a bigger battery? That's the question here?

I think I don't need extra battery, it can last for one day if I use all it's features

I couldn't compromise on the shape, I'm hoping that a 2000mah + extended battery that is the same size will be released. I've actually been using my laptop to charge my desire on the go, lol.

i must say that its replaced a my ipod touch and n97 (email client on n97 was poor, video playback wasn't great and music player could have been better and sat nav was far too buggy) but i have to say i've been really taken with it, picks up emails faster than my outlook does for gmail, screen is fantastic, battery life is roughly the same as my itouch after a day's usage and since google maps navigation has come along its become even better! hopefully a bigger battery will be released soon as mentioned above

I have been a big PC user for most of my life and found I spent many hours on it each day catching up with whatever is happening online, etc.
Since getting this phone, I've actually found I spend half the time on the computer as I used to. I can happily be elsewhere and be able to catch up on forums through my phone with no discomfort
Technology is meant to make life easier and more efficient. The desire has certainly done that for me.

Battery , for me, is the biggest issue.
If we can get a better battery, it would be superb.
I use the phone a lot. (I haven't made a single call with it yet either as my number has still to transfer over).
But, I don't manage to last the whole day without needing a charge early evening.
I think once the novelty of the phone has worn off it will be better, but even then, it's not as if I've been using it so heavily.
Small amount of Satnav to test it out.
Fair amount of internet during the day (switching between mobile data and wireless depending on proximity of wifi network).
Screen more often than not turned almost all the way down, unless light doesn't permit.
I never get through a full day without a charge...
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Are there any apps which export the phone's current settings, so that the set-up can be analysed by others (like the nice people on here) in order to work out a more power efficient set up?

You will see looking around these forums there is a lot of discussion an battery life! Personally I find that there are certain Apps that seem to drain my battery very quickly. One culprit for some reason seemed to be the 'Sky News' app? I dont have a list of apps that cause it but like I said read a few of the battery threads and it will give you some idea. The Sat Nav is a huge drain on the battery, and even when connected to my current car charger it drains quicker than it charges. I know why, its because my car charger is only kicking out .5a unlike the required 1a that the device needs (needless to say a better car charger is on its way).
But normally I can get a day out of it no problem. And If I use the Sat Nav its gonna be plugged in to a charger anyway...

I am happier with my Desire than than any other gadget I'be owned. The only problem is memory for apps. I'v havent got that many but I'm still short on space. what's the point in having a superphone if you can't show it off? I have 8 gig memory card but can't use any that space for apps! Madness!
Apps are limited un production by this and won't be a real co.tender to the iPhone appstore until it's solved.
If anyone know how to get apps on to SD on the desire please let me know. Would make this thing pretty perfect.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

Desire can replace a lot of gadgets but it's definitely not a replacement for a laptop or a camera.

IMHO, no. I've used it for a few weeks now, and at one point considered replacing my current phone with it but...
1. Appalling battery life, maybe a working day of usage, and if I'm having to put it on charge in the evening, I'm not using it.
2. Lack of stability - applications crash out at random, shutdowns frequently hang. If I have to take the battery out to reset it, a real pain if I'm out walking, it's not ready for frontline use. While I've been typing this, the browser has completely locked up.
3. Flash memory shortage; when it's rooted, or the OS supports install-to-card, this won't be a problem, but I'm not prepared to spend a lot of time managing memory. If I need to spend a lot of time maintaining the device, I might as well use WM.
4. Odd Calendar syncing - I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I want control of how my calendars are synced to the device; Android doesn't give me that. If I want to look back a few months and check the last time I took a leave day, it may not have synced. Shabby.
5. GPS - I imagine Copilot works well on this, but a few hours testing Google Maps Navigation at the weekend really brought out serious flaws, particularly when passing through areas with no cellular data coverage. A SatNav system has to sit in the dashboard mount and just work reliably for the whole trip or it's worthless, GMN didn't.
It's a nice device to play with, and there are some good, useful applications, but I need a reliable phone, and this isn't it. Hopefully the Evo will be.

Battery life -- one man's (positive) experience.

Got a stock Sprint CDMA Touch Pro 2 (WM 6.1) from a European seller on EBay about a week ago. Put my Vodafone SIM card in it and away we go... worked fine. I unlocked it with Olipro's web site and replaced the radio with his 2.05.00WV so I can use it with GSM carriers in the USA when I go there. So far so good, and I began piling on a lot of software -- upgrades of things I had been running on my hx4705 iPAQ. SPB Pocket Plus, Pocket Plus Diary, SKTools, Flexmail, and so on and so forth. I sync it with Thunderbird using Birdiesync (which I can recommend).
At some point in this process it began to get very slow and flaky, with lots of crashes. I began to get worried and removed Pocket Plus Diary -- I have over 1600 contacts. That sped it up some, but I noticed my battery was draining at a terrible rate. I had installed Advanced Config and set it for maximum performance, but most of those settings have to do with cache sizes and don't actually burn CPU time. I also set all the power management settings to Enabled. But it was still dropping like a rock within a couple of hours.
Eventually I began to despair -- slow, buggy, no battery life... I thought I had bought a lemon. I was on the point of flashing somebody else's ROM (without knowing who in the hell's I should choose -- everybody brags about their speed but few brag about their battery life). I decided to hard-reset the thing and see what happened. I charged it back up to about 67%, left everything else alone and put it in Suspend Mode by my bed. (No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, of course, I'm not an idiot.) I live in an area with good coverage.
In the morning it was dead as a doornail and I was sure that I had bought a pup. I can't deal with a phone that I can't put by my bedside for 8 hours -- I travel constantly and don't always have access to power. But since all the software was off it again, I starting putting things back, very slowly and carefully.
Long story short, I now seem to have very good battery life indeed WITHOUT flashing a new ROM. I'm not entirely sure why, but these are the steps I've taken, just in case it helps somebody else:
Touch FLO 3D off. It's a kludge anyway. I'm stylus guy.
Flashed yet another radio, 2.32.00WU
Phone network set to GSM only, not Global. (Settings > Phone > Network)
Backlight auto adjust is OFF, backlight turns off after 2 minutes on battery.
Device turns off after 3 minutes on battery.
Turned off Error Reporting. (Settings > System > Error Reporting)
Turned on all the Power Mangement features in AdvancedConfig.
Made a lot of registry tweaks recommended by Ninja Duck over at PPCGeeks. HAICH TEE TEE PEE ://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=110813 I didn't use his cab, just did them by hand. Among other things it turns off OBEX -- although I only turn on Bluetooth as necessary anyway.
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\Battery "PollInterval" set to 20000 instead of 5000.
In the Comm Manager, I keep data connections OFF until needed. No push mail, weather, etc. for me. When I want to read mail, I'll check for mail.
ALSO using RedFrogFish's Data Controller 1.0.1.8 just to be dead certain data connections are disabled.
Renamed OperaL.exe in Windows to OperaL-.exe. This prevents Opera 9 from starting on boot.
Messages > Options > my account > Send/Receive Schedule > Automatic Send/Receive set to Manually.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Cl ass\SDMemory_Class "DisablePowerManagement" = dword : 00000000
Removed PKG.lnk, poutlook.lnk, and HTCStartUp.lnk from Windows\StartUp. I dunno what these do but I don't seem to need them.
Put SBP Pocket Plus back on but NOT Pocket Diary.
One other thing -- on the strength of good experiences with PocketInformant on my old iPAQ, I originally installed the latest edition (9) on the Rhodium, but after the hard-reset I didn't reinstall it. It's slower than M$'s own Contact and Calendar managers, and while those aren't as good, they're good enough -- much better than they were under WM2003SE. I don't entirely trust PI. It's big and I suspect it of grabbing things that don't belong to it.
Bottom line: I am a MUCH happier camper. I don't know which of these was the most effective, but the phone is now both fast and easy on the battery. The battery savings might all be coming from the GSM Only setting and the new radio, for all I know.
Sorry this is so long-winded. I just wanted to say... if you're suffering... don't give up! I got much better battery life WITHOUT having to choose and flash somebody else's ROM. (I don't mind flashing ROMs but I'm damned if I can figure out how to choose one. Somebody needs to do a big review with a side-by-side table of features.)
Quick further update. I left it last night at 91% battery, and everything turned off that CAN be turned off except the radio. This morning, after close on 9 hours sitting there, it's at 86%. I'm pretty stoked!
A well done for perseverance!
nice hopefully these tips bump up my battery life
thanks for the tipps, i'm going to check those reg-tweaks by ninja duck you mentioned.
i would be interested in the mean duration you can use the phone without charging, i'm getting about 3-4 days of medium usage from one charge.
i also rather prefer a good battery life over some eye candy, so no htc tf3d for me to (noticed, that this is the main power consumer). in fact, i like the old school today plugins better, as i can see all upcoming appointments with today agenda, have some nice quick start buttons with easy today launcher (including a link to zlaunchy, where i can start all programs via t9 typing), i see the connection state and messages status with phone wheaver and the bandwidth usage with spb wireless monitor.
one thing i would recommend you is phone wheaver, where you can set profiles, that are activated at a specific time.i use a day and a night profile - in the second one, PW will disable all connections, as i wont need them at night (including the cell connection - i dont know the proper name, i mean this standard phone connection to the carrier) and so the battery life is better even more. PW also has the possibiliy to place a toggle data connection button in the today plugin, so you can switch connections fast. (hope, this was not too much of a commercial, i just like the software.)

If you sync to Outlook on the PC and set appointments and reminders on your calendar, having this turned off on the phone means you will not get any notifications of these events. Been curious about the other two, though.
Thanks for the advice. Battery seems to be an issue regularly cropping up. Maybe someone can help withm y current 'not' postive experience.
I have the TP2 exactly 12 months, and its been pretty good. Occasional freezes but nothing a soft reset doesnt handle, and its not too much hassle and i accept it because im a heavy user.
Battery has been reasonable. Always got me through the day, and it went on the charge every night.
About 2 weeks ago i suddenly noticed a change. Tbh it probably was creeping up up but i never noticed. Anyway, suddenly all im getting is about 4 hours!!! Battery will be showing about half full, next thing its beeping then off!!! Before if you went to bed with it fully charged and left it off the charger it would still have charge in the morning- now its dead as a doornail despite NO activity (email off, wifi off, bluetooth off, no progs runnign etc).
So onto ebay. Got a replacement battery but guess what- exactly the same!! I really dont think the new batterys faulty. Another one on the way just in case, but i think its a phone thing.
Any ideas???

I noticed that once the other day: battery was about 40% and the next morning the device had shut down. I have no idea what the reason was, but I guess I left googlemaps running with gps on or something... however, I didn't have this issue another time...

[Q] SE liveview

Does anyone know how well the xperia play works with SE's liveview? I heard many people had bluetooth problems if they had less then 50MB free RAM on their phones (Seems weird :/) But I have nearly 250MB of free ram after a few days of normal usage and an update fixed a lot of peoples problems. But still it seems a bit phone specific, did anyone test it with a xperia play?
For those who wonder what liveview is: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/accessories/overview/liveviewmicrodisplay
2th oled display for cell phones working over bluetooth, you could wear it as watch for example.
It's supposed to be functional with all 2.x.x Android phones, and Sony Ericsson's website even states it on the compatibility list.
All sources seem to point to "yes" =].
I know it's compatible, but a lot of people had problems with specific phones that where officially supported. They had a lot of random disconnects on certain phones.
yes.... i am using with XP and the disconnection issue is still there with latest firmware update.
got it as well but i dont thing its ram related
I have it, it does work, albeit a little sketchy at times. More often then not it pisses me off, the clock works ok on it, the Facebook almost never updates, forget about text messages showing up. RSS feeds on it quickly pile up and a lot of the apps you find in the market just don't work well. For instance, some of the apps lock the watch into that app only, the only thing to do at that point is a hard reset by holding power for 15 seconds. Hard reset is something you become very use to with this thing. Intermittently it loses connection for no reason at all, sometimes it even refuses to connect, doesn't matter which firmware you have installed.
The battery life on the thing is flat out horrible too, if you're lucky it will make it through the day, but only if you barley use it. I've grown accustomed to shutting off my phones Bluetooth and using it for a watch only, it will keep time but not access the apps without Bluetooth, at least that way I can make it more than a day with the clock function. It does control the music player pretty well, even displays the artist and title on the phone. It has a pretty cool function to dismiss call too, although not to answer them. The interface on the watch itself doesn't lag much, its pretty snappy when it works. Another glaring issue is how hard it is to remove from the watch band to charge the thing, the sucker snaps in there very tightly and the first few times its nearly impossible to remove, after awhile though it will become very lose from constantly inserting it and removing it. I got around this by purchasing a third party watch strap and bending a slight curve in it near the mini usb port, I can actually charge it while its mounted on the watch now.
Overall though, this thing is a gimmicky piece of ****, splendid way to waste money with little satisfaction return. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I have Liveview and im using it with my Xperia X8
Build
Build Quality is not that good, specially it pops out in the clip every now and then, because of Bad Design.
but you can sort it out by changing the strap or have a customized strap and make your liveview permanent on the clip, so no more accidentally popping out in the clip.
but for me i just used a double adhesive tape at the back and sides of liveview so it will stick to its clip no more problems after that
Connectivity
I have used it on SE Stock Eclair 2.1.1 and even Custom Rom 2.2.1/2.3.4, and updated Liveview and Liveware Application, It's Pretty stable and no Annoying disconnections, and really depends on available RAM you have actually, In my X8 i got a maximum of 80mb Ram after starting the liveview/liveware app to run it, but if my ram goes like 25mb(lowest) then disconnections issues will occur.
that happens only when playing games that are ram hungry.
I used it everyday when i go out usually 8hrs a day and i will have 1 or 2 disconnections, but after i reconnect it it will in 2-3s and its fine again.
Liveview Updates
Messaging/Calls/Miss Calls are instant, but i cannot say the same way with Facebook/Twitter/RSS feeds, but you can update them manually
Plugins
There are alot of available plugins in the market right now, but some simple plugins that you might need is still not available, for me i want a Notes plugin, but no luck at all
Battery Life
It can last up-to 2-3 days of 8hrs a day on a single charge, really depends on how you use it.
When would choose to use this over your phone? it seems to do nothing more than what your phone does?

Hacking the Sony Liveview

Despite the bad reviews I picked up a Liveview yesterday. Was $50 brand new off Craigslist. And surprise surprise, it turned out to be a turd. Well, I don't like to waste money, so I set about modding it. Thought some people here might be interested to see what I did.
So far I've waterproofed the case. Next I'll be building a better strap, one that doesn't make it huge or block the USB port. http://www.jax184.com/projects/liveview/liveview.html has everything I've done so far on it.
Nice i got that thing and it "worked" but still with the having to restart it all the time was very annoying but i ended up sending mine back
So I've been using the Liveview for a couple days, or at least trying to. Even after doing a full reset of the device, reinstalling the software on my phone and removing all the plugins, it has a battery life of about 6-8 hours. In that time I turned the screen on twice, and it briefly lit up to tell me of an incoming call. No texts, no alerts, and I don't have farcebook/twatter/etc turned on. It sat 2 feet from my phone the entire time. If I actually try to use the damn thing to, say, control the media player, the battery goes dead in 2 to 3 hours.
Pathetic...
I've decided I'm going to build it into a custom case for a friend of mine with a much larger battery, since the stock one is completely and utterly useless. So much for my gasket job...
Not sure if the battery is just dying on yours or what but if I never touch the screen, mine lasts for a couple days at least (and that's with alerts!). Sad to hear yours has issues :\
Mine's brand new and running the latest firmware/software with the bare minimum of functionality enabled, so I'm as confused as you.
I have a liveview and i absolutely love it. I dont have any connection issues but i mostly just use it as a watch with out having it connected over bluetooth and the battery lasts for days when i do that. I do have an issue now where i dropped it and the select button on top doesnt work anymore
Can I connect multiple liveviews to my phone?
I just bought 4 of them for $15 a pop !! Sweet
I know I can use it with torque which is cool
what else can I do with them? Can I run album art to it from say player pro? or Pocket Casts?
is there a decent list somewhere of "interesting" things you can do with the little buggers?
Hi, do someone know the dimensions of the battery, because i have one with death batt. and need a replacement.
nice mod! Based on the pictures I can see the battery size in case I need to replace it, by the way using notifications my watch last 2.5 days, using a plugin last only 30minutes or less

+1 I just got one for $15, I wanna find some cool things I can do with it. What have you done to set yours up?
its a pain in the freaking butt. cool potential poor execution.
it constantly gets disconnected when something goes wrong ON THE DROID SIDE. terminating the app and relaunching it solves the problem for X period of time (few hours ??)
the most convenient access is also the worst designed. the watch band. YOU CAN NOT CHARGE IT WHILE IN THE WATCH BAND.
what freaking moron though that was a good idea to force us to remove it (VERY difficult) to charge it.
if the software bugs get worked out I may look into modding the stinking socket so I can charge it while in watch mode (thinking of RIVETING the case to the band) then I won't need the little watch pin thingy that is keeping me from charging it while its in the watch band.
and there is just not that many "cool" apps to use for it yet or the few out their are poorly executed.
how hard can it be to reliably push the freaking album art to the watch ?

2 Generations of Liveviews
Just to be clear, there are 2 versions of this device floating about... The older one goes for around $20 and is not much more than a novelty... The newer model runs around $100 and seems to have fixed the battery life issue... One should look at the Pebble once it is available as a possible alternative...

I started creating a usable gui for the openliveview project. Theo openliveview project is an open source reimplementation Of the liveview app.
You van follow the development in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422106&page=26
Note: you have to uninstall the liveview app bevore you van install openliveview

Where can you find one for 15 bucks? Even if it did nothing, I'd want it for 15 bucks, just to have as a key for my phone using tasker. I supposed I could get any old bluetooth headset, but I wanted something wearable.

Yeah, $15 is AWESOME!
$18 with Free shipping on ebay buy it now is the best price I can find so far.
I bought four of them and donated 2 to the local hackerspace.
Would be wicked to control more than one at once. I'm trying to find some chick to wear two as earrings.
Perhaps one controlled with Sony app and one Open Liveview App each for one mac address.
Contrary to earlier post, I seem to be able to have both Sony and Openliveview apps installed at once (though haven't tried RUNNING both) yet.
My battery life across the two that I've evaluated and (a third I lost to the ocean) seems significantly better than the average reported above.
But a LOT of variables have changed since the OP. New firmware, new app, new phone, new bt stack, new android versions...
My impression IIRC is that this thing is ROCK SOLID on CyanogenMod7 or CM9 on evo 3d.

Hey everyone, I'm looking to buy a casual watch. (something less than 500 bucks) I'm really interested in both the WIMM One and I'm Watch. I have looked at the specs and reviews, but I'd like some opinions. both look like they have a lot of potential. I do like the I'm Watch's curved screen. but the WIMM One looks like its got a bit more tech on it. What do you think? I want the most bang for my buck
Personally, I'm looking at the WIMM. Both from a cost perspective and from a battery life one.
The I'm Watch can do speakerphone, which the WIMM can't, but, really, I don't see myself using a speakerphone on a watch very often.
The dual-mode screen on the WIMM is a huge plus, in my book, as is the open-ness of the developer platform (something that I haven't seen much of with the I'm Watch).
Apps / Dev Support will make or break these devices.
I think I like the WIMM too. I have to ask, do you feel its worth getting the developer preview? perhaps I should tough it out and wait for a consumer release?
Well, I finally broke down and ordered a dev preview. It should be here in the next week or so.
After I get it, I'll let you know.
Awesome, Thanks!
Checked on my order status...
I should get it Wednesday or Thursday.
Early Christmas for me!
I've had the WIMM for a little less than a day now, and so far, the experience has been pretty good.
The only complaint I have is that Bluetooth does not want to reconnect to my phone if I let it get out of range. I have to un-pair, then re-pair the two.
Other than that, everything works wonderfully.
The display is amazing. Full color mode looks great, and the B&W LCD is amazingly crisp.
I haven't had it long enough to comment on the battery life, but so far today, after taking it off the charger six hours ago, I'm at 60%(ish) battery. Granted, it has seen only light usage, but, honestly, as a watch, I'm impressed.
I'll try to answer any questions, but so far I can definitely recommend getting one.
I got my WIMM in yesterday, and let it charge for the suggested three hours first. It's been on my wrist for the past eight hours and I'm still at 90%.
I've gotten really good at the swipe controls now; it's second nature.
My young daughter keeps playing the tilt ball puzzle game I downloaded from the WIMM beta forum.
I keep using the News reader app from the same place. That one alone, even though it's using sync'd data and isn't pulling realtime, is going to keep me happy with the watch because it's great for passing time in bed, while waiting, etc. It works surprisingly well on the small screen.
I have it set to sync my Google Calendars every few hours. Fantastic, having my appointments right there. (One included watchface even shows the next item.)
Having weather and time on my wrist for my favorite work and pleasure locations around the world is handy.
I downloaded a Christmas watchface with falling snow, which is fun to show off.
Just now, my wife asked for a wakeup in a half hour, so I pulled up the alarm app and a few seconds later I had one set to remind me. So easy.
The only problem I'm having is getting ADB to recognize the darned thing. Once I get past that common new-Android-device problem, I'm going to be creating some apps myself for it. First, probably a family picture viewer.
By itself, the WIMM looks bulky. On my wrist, with the way they sloped the wrist band carrier, it looks fine. Love the magnetic charging cradle, btw.
Now I wish I'd bought a couple for Christmas presents to my stepsons who love gizmos.
Heading towards 24 hours now, and still at 50%.
However, I am not using the Bluetooth. Just a WiFi auto sync every 3 hours.
I really like that whenever the watch goes into standby mode after a few seconds, the screen turns into a transflective B&W LCD image that is updated once a minute. Saves battery and yet the watchface is always visible unless it's dark... and then just a slight tap brings up the backlight and full color.

Thanks Ted. I'm constantly adding on more Android devices for development, so I'm used to having a bit of trouble now and again. I thought at first it was because I only have the R3 usb drivers from Google. I also inserted a line in the usb inf file with the WIMM ID.
After reading comments by others, I finally found that I just had to hold the module down tight in the dock paddle while my laptop was talking to it. I've cleaned the contacts, but it just seems that they don't make good connections by themselves all the time. Overall, though, that's a relatively minor annoyance.
Hi kdarling, I wonder if you could help me by answering a couple of questions about the WIMM one as although there are a few reviews online I cant seem to find all the answers I was after
1) I assume this doesnt currently have GPS? It doesnt seem to mention it in any of the reviews so I assume not, and if so then thats a shame since there is real potential here for this to be the ideal "athlete" device which could log your training routes/speed etc especially in cases where you might not want to take your phone with you
2) How well does the Transflective screen work? Ive seen in reviews that it is updated every minuite but is that adjustable in the app? Again the reason I am asking is for sports being outside in the sun a "normal" LCD screen is unusable, but a transflective screen would be perfect for displaying stats like speed etc but only if it were updating more often then every minuite
3) how "easy" is it to develop apps for this? Again as mentioned I can see a real sporting potential for this device if you were able to launch apps that were specific for the sport you were doing (i.e. one for running, rowing, cyling etc) that displayed the data you wanted
If you could help with my questions would be great, have been looking/waiting for a dvice like this for a while really, just as shame that theres no GPS as thats an essential requirement really..
I'm not kdarling, but I have one of these as well, so let me take a stab at answering...
1) The device does have GPS, but, according to WIMM, that particular chip is disabled (via software) currently for power saving / performance reasons. I'm not positive, but I believe that the device could receive GPS information from a connected phone also.
2) The Transflective screen is absolutely amazing. The clarity is much better than I was expecting. Currently, there is no method to adjust the refresh rate for the apps that use that screen mode. From what I've been able to ascertain, the refresh rate can be specified within a given application. However, that seems to have a fairly negative effect on the battery life.
3) I'm not a "real" developer, so I honestly can't speak on this... However, having said that, I will state that it seems very marginally more difficult that developing for most other android devices, mostly due to the inherent with a device of this size/specs/interface.
I can say that this device, as it is right now, is absolutely fantastic. It has the potential to provide a tremendous impact in everyday life with a few minor tweaks, but even without any changes, it has made a significant impact so far for me.

AH thats brilliant thanks!Very interesting to hear that it does contain GPS then, even if it is disabled, since that suggests in future it may be able to activate it for those times when you would need it, and then disable it when you need battery life!
Will keep a close eye on this I think...

Sweet, so I should probably order soon then eh?
Has anybody had a stab at the I'm Watch yet? I'd really like to know before I buy one.

As long as it has a 40 hour or so battery life it's not much differernt than using a manual wristwatch.
I'd have to say though compared to the I'm Watch the wimm one is really ugly.
@carnagecjb Great reply. I couldn't have said it better myself.
@stelph By your use of the word "brilliant", I surmise that you live outside of the U.S. Good and bad news. Bad: We don't ship the WIMM One outside of the US yet, since we're still waiting for CE certification.
Good news: We just started a contest where I will send you a free unit - anywhere in the world - once you have created and posted a good app to our forums. See the Announcements within dev.wimm.com

Many of us at WIMM Labs have created our own straps. Because the module pops out of the strap, you can place it into whatever attachment you like. I use a wide leather strap (pict attached). Other says that its ugly, but Beauty is in the eye...

A short VZ GN review. Please feel free to share.

About 7 people in line. I have a friend who works at the store so he had mine ready to go. My transaction time was literally less than 3 minutes.
I power the device on and take the sticker off the screen. There is a sticker under the sticker?! NOPE! It's the "Google" logo and it is so sharp I thought it was a decal. I started getting excited. The boot animation is cool to say the least.
I set it to "Back up my apps" so it starts downloading them.... like 65 of them. I live in an LTE area, but on my mile long drive home, every single app had installed....no issues, no errors, all ready to go.
The device isn't as wide as I expected and is longer than I thought it would be. I started messing with it and customizing it. I LOVE Go launcher, so I try to start to convince myself I don't need it. After toggling back and forth between GO launcher and the stock I realize that Go launcher frees up the "Google search bar" area allowing me to have another row of apps. Plus custom icons, renaming...it's Go launcher for now.
I bought the extended battery. (I know it's barely a bump over the stock one) So far, it has been running down VERY fast. I have it on the charge now, but this will be the 3rd time and I have hardly done anything other than set the device up.
Transferring Pictures, Ringtones, etc was very, very easy.
In use....well. It's fast. The screen will still lag a bit now and then stock or Go Launcher, it doesn't matter. The display resolution and pixel density are awesome. Just came from an iPhone and I prefer this display.
I have only found 3-4 apps that will not work at all on this device. Surprisingly The Sims and FIFA 11 are among them. The other is AVC. (Advanced volume control to lock your ringtone so you don't mute it in your pocket)
This is the first Android phone I have had that I have not installed Advanced taskiller on. I feel naked without it, but I know, I know...you don't need it.
The only things that bother me so far are...
A. Getting used to ICS. This is a HUGE change. You kind of understand what things are and where they are located, but it can be annoying to try to find simple system settings at times.
B. I have had a lot of "Large" phones. This is the only one I can literally not operate with one hand. It is so tall, it is very hard at times.
C. Searches in the market stay in the "search" field. Lets say you search "Battery"....find something, install it, YAY!. Now you hit search and type "Picture". In the past it cleared the space and you would find items that contained "Picture" but now it searches "BatteryPicture". Not a huge deal, but annoying having to clear it every time.
D. Copy and paste are still strange to me. Some apps like Gmail have their own dedicated buttons. Others you double tap....
E. Speakers are QUIET! I mean....really quiet. I am an audio engineer and have processed my ringtones for maximum volume with out distorting them. They are still pretty quiet.
Over all..... Good device. It will take some getting used to. I like it a lot, but like I said, not much actual use out of it yet. I hope this is helpful, thanks for reading!
i've been reading about the battery complaints for weeks now. decided to buy an extended battery because of them.
but in the meantime i figured i'd run with the stock battery just to get an idea of how my personal usage would affect battery life.
i literally walked out of the vzw store at about 9:20 this morning all of the defaults, account added and backed up apps downloading. i had about 48% battery life.
since that time i have downloaded apps, played with facial recognition, the camera, video camera, have my gmail acount syncing in the background, used Sesmic(twitter) and setup Beautiful Widgets.
i didn't hit 0% until about a little over 5 hours later. now that does include about 2 hours of also being connected to wifi.
in summary, if i can get about 10 hours of "normal" use out of the stock battery, that's personally not bad at all in my opinion. considering i'll never technically be that far away from a power source of some kind.
The extended battery is ~13.5% bigger than the stock battery. Can't expect it to magically make battery life drastically longer.

who was looking for drastically longer?
I am VERY curious on battery life on this
Anyone who is complaining about the initial charge has outrageous expectations. The first charge is always poor. Give it 3-4 cycles then post an opinion.
My GSM lasts all day with no issues. Maybe LTE will kill the battery. Who knows but the GSM life is great.

Yeah, I mean coming form 3500MaH Sedios on Thunderbolts, EVOs, etc... I didn't expect it to be a miracle. When I typed the original post I was at 65%. I am now at 75%.
It's a 4G phone. I mean, I know what's to be expected. Overall, I really like it. Now I have it completely "Customized" I will probably reply once I get some actual hands on use in the apps.
I just bought GTA III...that should do a number on the battery life.
The first couple of cycles won't last long, especially with you playing with it. My phone reports the screen accounting for 60% of the used battery. If this is true, the black background I just switched to may help, as it did on my incredible's AMOLED. My Bionic had pretty poor battery life, with minimal use. I'm loving ICS now, although I wish I could use custom auto-brightness scaling. I don't want or need my screen to look crazy good all the time.
OK. So several games load faster and smoother than on my iPhone 4. Performance is fantastic. Still surprised about how many apps "Are not compatible", but I would rather have that then crash after crash.
I'm with you. I'm using a black background, but the screen 60-80% of my battery life. The battery seems to be charging up quicker now and now that I have got all of my apps signed in and customized the way my OCD demands, I am feeling more at home.
Great device so far. Can't wait for a 3000+MaH personally.

Here's an even shorter review:
It's great.
Went from the G2z to the Resound to the Vzw Nexus.
ICS is slick. Love the tactile feedback on the keyboard. At no time did I have to adjust to the larger screen like I thought I would.
The Nexus has a weird/different scrolling physics. Makes it feel less responsive but nicer looking. I can't say its bad but takes getting used to.
Haven't had much time with it but Gallery won't find my wallpaper collection. Have to use a file explorer to set my wallpapers.
Dialer kept dialing digits while I was talking. Could have been a fluke.
Screen looks great. Reminds me why I missed my Nexus One.
Things slippery though. Wonder if they'll make rubber back plates.

Jury still out for me...
I am sure this will probably cause a stir, but 12 hours into mine (before you flame me for being a troll, I was already a VZW customer on the Bionic) and I am still not completely sold (yet?). I am also not a Moto employee, etc. I am just posting my honest observations thus far. The RAZR is nice, but the lack of a removable battery was the deal-killer there and kept me on the Bionic.
I am in the STL metro market, and I don't think this Nexus has the radio/rf performance of the Bionic. I don't seem to hold a 4G signal as long as I did and it seems weaker in known strong areas coming from the Bionic.
I am seeing some quirks also, perhaps these are ICS-specific. For example, when using the official mobile hotspot app, it is more difficult to get to (there doesn't seem to be an icon for the "app") and I cannot find the option to not broadcast the SSID. Perhaps I am missing it, but I don't see it and have looked for it.
Ironic as it may seem, I am missing the Bionic at this instant. I liked the ability to wirelessly charge it on the Qi pad, and I do miss the MicroSD card slot (even though I know the GN has 32GB onboard). I also know I am probably one of about 10 whole people who use Webtop, but I have to admit I really like it. Being able to dock your phone and use it as a PC (I know it has its limitations) is approaching some Minority Report futuristic fun.
I am going to continue a cautious eval, but I do wonder if I will be patient enough to see it through. Just don't think I can wait 6 months for Moto to push out ICS for the Bionic.
Just my 2 cents...
-Rob
Wireless Charge and WebTop are nice features if you use them.
I think the Rezound has a Wireless Charge option. It has lots of battery door contacts. I don't think it comes like that out of the box but I think the Wireless Charge kit comes with the dock and a battery door. Of course you'd lack a Webtop. The Rezound was pretty nice IMO. I think I woulda kept it aside from already being sold on the Nexus. They're work phones (for me) and the Rezound had a real good feel to it.
See I have an Asus Transformer that I carry with me when I need it. I go between a PC, Tablet, and Phone. Having a separate Tablet with a 10 hour battery has its perks. By the time you buy the WebTop "screen" you're 80% to a tablet.
Perhaps you should rethink your situation before jumping into another device.
Hmmm...interesting. Needs more rabble.

It's oooookkkkkaayyyyyyyy!!!!
Rabble rabble rabble.
Coming from an iPhone 4S I'm very impressed with my Nexus so far. I've been running both side by side all week and I've decided to keep the Nexus and send the 4S back.
At first the size bothered me as it's quite a slippery thing and I nearly dropped it the other day (just managed to catch it in time before it bounced on a stone floor!). So now I have a case for it which sorts that problem out.
The other thing I've noticed about it which I never do with my iPhone, is I if I pick it up with my left hand, then I'll use my right hand to operate it. However if I use my right hand, then i'll use my thumb to operate it (I'm right-handed). Plus that stops me hitting the volume buttons all the time reaching for the power button ;-)
