how do i edit my build.prop - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Android Development

if i edit my build.prop with astro, on a reboot the changes are lost, the file is marked r-w, so something altering it on bootup, anybody know where the source comes from??

Download Root Explorer and use that. Trust.

tried that, it keeps getting overwritten with some king of backup.

If that's the case, then it's a problem specific to the ROM. I haven't tried it on my TP2 but it worked flawlessly on my G1.
Lemme take a look once I get a second.

why cant i find the directory /system/ ?!?! i cant find the build.prop from within windows or winmo?!

Because it does not excist in winmo. It only excists in android.

I tried Root Explorer and it workers . I use latest froyo build with lower incall volume kernel .
Can somebody tell me when I delete apps in system/apps folder I delete from data.img or from system.ext2 ?

Same here, I change my build.prop file or replace it and it gets overwritten.
Using the build.prop for protected apps but can't get it to stay.
I am using the latest BLAZEN build from PPCGEEKS/Reefer.
Being an Ext2 file instead of sqsh I figure this would have worked flawless.

I'd really like to download logmein, gbahours, paypal and a few other protected apps. I can't without fixing this build.prop file....
OR
Find some way to get a working fingerprint Google has already approved.

Glad to see I'm not the only one looking into this I have the same problem in my android OS - different phone, but same custom OS. Hopefully this thread won't die - if I ever figure it out I'll be sure to post here as well

[Q] Odd Problem with startup.txt - it gets deleted!

I just started doing the xdandroid (since it was 'finalized' on 9/16), by downloading the cab, and installing the reference version of the package.
Everything installs and runs fine. The first time. After a graceful shut-down, and re-starting, I learn that the startup.txt file is 0 bytes -- empty! So, Android won't boot.
Why is my startup.txt continually being modified and cleared?
Any info appreciated.
Thx.
Jon
I have the same Problem...
Did you guys search? If I search in the android thread on "0 bytes" I get 20 results. It's a bug of the startup utility. Don't use it or rename startup.txt to default.txt. Maybe putting the startup.txt to read only should work to.
Best option: DON'T USE MGJDROIDUTIL!!!
Also, for you cab peoples - it uses this by default - use haret.exe!!!
i had the same prob. it goes to haret and if u click run it will say it cant find default text. uninstall android. delete all files in andboot folder. reinstall. copy and paste the "startup.txt" file to the same folder. rename it "default.txt" or just "default."
the same thing will happen to the startup.txt but the default.txt will always work. you just have to hit run when it gets to haret.
I had the same issue, the problem only seems to occur when you check/uncheck the Hardware 3D Box.

Dude... it's MGJDroidUtil that's causing the issue. I hear there's an update coming, but for the time being
DON'T USE IT!!!!!!!!!
Sorry I had to get forceful with the text, but it seems some aren't getting the point...
Lol relax, I've learned that the hard way. I just wanted to explain to these guys my side of the symptom and what I notice that seems to have caused the problem. I agree with you though.
I do not even know MGJDroidUtil, but I have the same issue. It happens along side with SD card corruption (file000.chk)

Are you using the cab install & using that shortcut it put in your start menu? Then you are using MGJDroidUtil.

Jesus why can't you just not use the MGJDroidUtil?!? I'm not sure why that's so difficult. If you don't use it, it won't screw up your startup.
I had the same issues. What I did is after installing it go into file explorer and long press haret.exe and add it to programs and set it on your home screen as the link. )
There is a new startup tool, use that. Delete the old one.

I would, just because then you get a better feel of what's really happening. I installed the cab for the first time last night... that thing is an atrocity.
At any rate, MGJDroidUtil was also updated, so you should be safe using it again - assuming you're using the newly updated version that is.
hi there i got the new build 28-9 and i got the problem when i want to boot it...its says storagecard/andboot directory does not exist...while its exist... someone told me to:
Startup.txt, in the cmdline section. Don't use the startup utility (MGJDroidUtil) if you edit the startup manually tho. It'll blast out whatever you put in there.
but i dont know where the Startup.txt is..in my sd card i been searching but no results and i got a gsm touch pro 2... well maybe i should delete everything again...are these FSCK0000.REC files also from this builds?cuase i didnt delete that..i only deleted the andboot and 100android(dcim) files

Yes, the .rec files are from the build. You can put an entry in your froyo.user.conf that deletes them for you.
Also, you can't find your startup.txt...? How are you running Android, it should be where haret.exe is!
its after you install and load android. after exiting android and returning to winmo, somewhere along the lines startup text gets deleted. for what reason? i know not..
hey atleast it teaches us workarounds lol
ye i know but i could find that file thats why i think it didnt work this time for me
is com.handcent.nextsms-2.9.29 a android file? and EncFiltLog to?

[Q] Flashable Bootanimation.

Are there any flashable boot animations for the DHD?
and in particular, the droid x boot?
if there isn't could someone please tell me how to change mine to this? with links to the files? or a link to a flashable zip?
You don't need to flash them... just use Root Explorer and drop "bootanimation.zip" in \data\local
For the actual animations just search the Themes section in the Desire HD forum. You can also look in the Themes sections for original Desire as most of them should work too. I'm sure someone will have ported the Droid X one, if not try looking in the Themes sections of the Droid X forum... you get the idea

Extract the zip file for the boot sound as it's the .mp3 you need to use. Bootanim stays as .zip
Reply back know how you get on / if you need any help etc.
Oh, and be sure to press the "Mount R/W" when in the correct folder in Root Explorer. Wont let you change anything otherwise

wow I feel stupid. I was using the temp files from the top of the list in my sdcard XD thank you.
oh wait it didn't work xD I have bootanimation.zip and android_audio.mp3 in data/ local and it doesn't work. i've rebooted twice since they've been there. what else am I doing wrong ?
Try the two files I have attached and see if they work. You will need to extract the zip for the start sound as it wouldn't let me attach the mp3. Also, you will have to rename the other zip from black_bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.zip. I have loads of them so need to keep the file names different.
Reboot and they should work
Still no luck. even with your files, in data/local with r/w it just won't work? is it something to do with me being on the stock rom, kernel and radio?
I don't know but this is really weird ? could it be a permissions thing? thank you so much for trying to help me though.
it couldn't be that i'm using a mac could it?
No probs man
I've never had a poke around inside a stock ROM for DHD but I expect the files still go in the same place, so it must be a permissions thing as I doubt it would be radio or kernal related.
Silly question I should have maybe asked earlier... you have a rooted phone right? If not none of this will work!
As for a being on a Mac, shouldn't make a difference as you can transfer all the stuff to /data/local/ on your phone... only need a computer to put the files on your SD card if you didn't download them with your phone.
haha yes my phone is definitely rooted, I'm pretty sure I have radio and engineering S-OFF, I had SHIP, now I have ENG, I would really like to know what the problem is though.
would it be possible to fix the permissions ? should I use rom manager to fix them ? or do it manually in root explorer?
If it is a permission problem, rom manager's fix permissions option did not solve the problem.
It would be so much easier just having a flashable zip xD
You could give it a go with ROM Manager yeah.
I must admit, I'm stumped with this! I bet it's something really easy that we're both overlooking!
rom manager didn't work.
it has to be something obvious. I would flash a new rom, but then I need to flash a new radio, because last time I ran leedroid, and android revolution HD, my microphone wouldn't work so I had to restore my backup.
having to do all that just for a boot animation and sound would be such a pain.
Well I'm going to sleep, most likely, and hopefully someone will have worked something out by the time i get back or wake up.

Or another option is that your current rom just does not read bootanimation from /data/local/. Try it with custom rom, or put it to /system/.. I do not remember which folder. But look for bootanimation.zip.

I found bootanimation, not .zip but i can't make the system file r/w only r/o
after much trial and error, i found it at last....
@P1xelVandal in case you had not installed any custom ROM then the original bootanimation.zip can be found in the following location:
/system/customize/resource
Rename the original one to bootanimation_bak.zip before replacing in case any error occurs.
And, of course, you have to mount the file system in R/W mode for the changes to take place.. worked fine for me... piece of cake now.
Bump...
I've also just read somewhere that you could try /system/customize/resource/
Let us know how you get on mate
I gave up and flashed a radio and Android Revolution HD. It works fine now. Thank you for helping

replacing xt9

not really sure which forum to post this in (sorry if this is the wrong one), but all of the new roms that have been created seem to lack the xt9. i had really started to like it. i downlaoded the system dump and was wondering, if i copied the T9DB folder (from the dump) over to the system folder of whatever rom im going to flash, would that fix the problem.
Melvin's ROM: Beast MOD II has it. I'm pretty sure this is more a general question though. Also pretty sure copying and pasting is a no go.

the xt9 option is in all of them under keyboard, but doesnt work. open up sms and try to type something.

You also need the lib, libXt9core.so. Melvin probably removed it. You should be able to drop that and the apk in their right places and it should work.

its very simple. first i downloaded this system dump. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300682 . then opened it up and dragged the folder T9DB over to my desktop. then plugged my phone in the computer and connect to usb storage. dragged the file over to my external sd card and unplugged my phone. then open up root explorer (or some file explorer that allows root access) and copied the file and navigated your main folder (just titled /) scrolled down to find system and pasted the folder in there. restart and it works
the lib is also required for it to work but that wasnt removed witht he rom im using. if you want to check to see if its still there go to the lib folder located within your system folder and scroll all the way to the bottom and their should be a file called libxt9core.so
i tried to go into as much detail as possible to make it as simple as possible for you :]
This is one of the few features of the SGH-T989 which I truly despise. I LOVED the auto-correct on the Nexus S, but XT9 frustrates me terribly because a) it assumes English and I do not always type in English and b) it will drop entire words into my sentences if I hit space or something, ending in some REALLY weird messages!! I turned it off, because it was taking me a lot longer trying to go back and edit my messages ex-post-facto than just make a spelling error here or there.
do you know where i can get the lib file at? im using bombaridier and it doesnt have it in the lib file.

Remember, you can't delete a file that is IN USE, ie; system files. You need to freeze/disable them first THEN delete them! Watch what you delete though, some files are needed, some files that you least suspect, and will cause problems if you delete them.

I have root on stock os but recovered from nandroid.

Are you using the 'Root Explorer' app to do this? If not, I suggest you get that from the Play store first. Secondly, make sure the "root privileges" are enabled in Superuser for the app.
If you have already done what I mentioned and still occur problems, may I ask what folders in the 'sys directory' you are trying to change? As majority of the files/folders you are seeing in that folder are there for a reason and named accordingly for your phone to utilize that directory and keep the phone working.

Unless you know the exact name and which sub-directory to place the folders to link with the apps you have mentioned, I suggest you do not add or modify anything.
The apps such as CPU Spy utilizes your phones kernel to determine what your usage is. What kernel are you using for your phone? Maybe flashing a new one would help.
I'll look in to the issue more and post any other solutions if I find any. Good luck!

The app may not be compatible with a stock ROM/kernel. Hopefully someone else on a stock ROM can help you confirm that.
That's a possibility.

I've never needed to use CPU Spy as SetCPU is more than enough, so I apologize if for not being able to answer that question. It just seems like a compatibility issue with what you are currently using, nothing for you to be worried about.

[Q] Editing /system/etc/hosts file - restores itself after reboot

Hi
So I am looking at blocking a number of websites - no, I don't really want to do this through app's as a mere uninstall can undo the blocks.
I've rooted my phone, I've given +rw mount to /system/ and I'm able to etc hosts under /system/etc/hosts just fine.
However, as soon as I reboot, the system restores the hosts file to it's original state and all my edits to that file are undone.
Is there anything I can do about this? Please be a bit more specific than just "flash the kernel", thanks.
