Can you put 2.2 Froyo on the Desire? - Desire General

When 2.2 Froyo is released it will presumably go to the N1 first, then we'll have to wait for HTC and for carriers to get round to updating the Desire.
But with rooting is it possible to just put 2.2 straight on a Desire from the Nexus One?
As in, have the exact same 2.2 ROM as the N1. No modifications, nothing, just stock Froyo running on the Desire?

It will propbably take some tweaking but yes it will be possible.

with a rooted phone and after htc release the kernel source it will be possible
i didn't think htc release a 2.2 update soon :|

maby the dont release the kernel before they have made a 2.2 upgrade?

As usual we won't get a upgrade fron Htc for several months, but this community will react quickly as usual when the new kernel is released ;-)

When the next version of Android is released....

Assuming we have root access by then (I really hope we do) will you be waiting for HTC to release the Sense version of it or are you going to upgrade to stock Android in the meantime?
pure
after having experienced android being, modded by htc and then buggered by orange, i'm hoping we can root the desire as i'd like to go straight to a pure android o/s

same here i hate what orange has done to the rom it descusts me since this is my first branded handset for about 5 years now and i am used to the generic version got very good and the flashing process on winmo now stuck on android v.confusing.
Don't hold your breath Read this:

If this is true ... FroYo (the next Android OS build iteration) will be next month together with Flash 10.1.
Then we can pray every night to have root access + write permission to the system partition !
I really hope we do have root access. Not having proper flash is really bugging me.
Either we get root or HTC Have a sense version very quick after the FroYo release.
Doesn't the HTC Evo 4g have froyo? Would be ported over.

The 2.1 update for the Hero still hasn't been released despite 2.1 having been released a good while ago.
But then again, the EVO 4G and the Desire have the exact same level of processing power so I don't see why HTC would delay the update in any way.
Let's hope HTC don't let us down.
whats the problem with the Flash thats on the desire? I have not had any non-loading flash sites at all yet

It gets bogged down by heavy sites. I want flash to work just aswell as it does on my desktop.
New flash version will most probably have hardware acceleration, and all the functions flash 10.1 has on the desktop.
And -hopefully- it will be a fully optimized version of Flash. So it's actually doable on a mobile device. But I guess that is the only way for it to be succesful.
And just to be prepared, I'm programming all my new flash applications to be able to run on mobile devices (min resolution of 800x480). I'm going openscreen project, multiplatform, multi os, multi mobile devices!
If the rumors about the change in how the OS will update then I cannot see too much trouble sorting out Sense for it as it will only be compatibility checks with the core components and allow for any new core features.
Plus going by @gogol's post there will be a lot of pressure on HTC to release Sense quick smart for it with full Flash support. For all we know HTC may already be working on it just because we don't know whats coming with Froyo doesn't mean the companies haven't got a pre-release ROM

They more than likely do as they are releasing the EVO 4G with FroYo in about 2-3 weeks.
I'm guessing that Android 2.2 will be released within the next 2 - 2 1/2 weeks and that HTC will either release the Sense version of 2.2 at the same time or at the very very latest at the same time as the EVO.
Forgive my ignorance but will htc upgrade the android os on the desire to froyo when it is released or are we stuck with eclair unless we root the device?

Android 2.2 or Sense

Hi,
I've had my desire for a few weeks now and am loving it. Only problem is that when Google release an update, it takes HTC and then the mobile operators forever to release the update.
Is there a way to do the following:
- install a default android 2.2 ROM; so when an update is issued by Google I can get it...Ive heard the desire is the same as the Nexus one, so can I use the same generic nexus rom?
- install a generic htc rom so that when HTC update their software, i dont have to wait for the my operator to do so.
If i install the nexus rom, can i revert it back to the HTC rom later?
What do you guys recommend?
thanks in advance.
Word of advise for a new poster.
Use the Search button and or look through the threads before you post.
Trust me, it will keep you alive!
No you can not, untill HTC releases there version with Sense
The speed difference between Android 2.2 and Android 2.1 is really hard to notice barr a few apps. It really isn't worth the tradeoff for now, Sense UI is far better than stock Android regardless.

Root methods

Hi there, with the Desire about to launch on Telus in Canada, two questions:
1) If you've already gotten the 2.2 update - does the UnrEVOked root method still work?
2) Has the "exploid" root method been applied to the Desire as well (as it has with Nexus One, Droid X, and many many other phones)? If so is it working on the 2.2 update?
No, nothing works yet.
Ok. And how about if the Telus Desire comes with a rootable 2.1... is there a way to upgrade to a pre-rooted Desire 2.2 that is otherwise identical to HTC's version of 2.2?

if your desire comes with a hboot of 0.75 or 0.80 you can root, if it comes with froyo and the new hboot 0.92 it cant be rooted yet obviously if you can root it, you will have no trouble upgrading to one of the modded official froyo roms that are pre rooted and have the new hboot removed
hi guys
since i updated my desire i cannot access root does any one have solution
for this problam.thxx
Good to know!
Is there any sense as to whether a Desire ROM from one region will work on a phone from another that comes with different 3G frequencies? I know this causes problems with the Milestone, but it isn't an issue with the Nexus One.
A HowardForums member reports that the Telus Desire comes with:
kernel:
2.6.29-e5576724
Build Number:
1.29.661.1
2.1Update1
No root reports yet, but would any problems be anticipated based on this info?

[Q] Fresh Rom Rooted update to 2.3 gingerbread

This is probably a stupid question but once htc evo gets gingerbread or ever gets it will my phone tell me that 2.3 gingerbread is available? then if that dose happen will i become unrooted? I'm new to android i have the fresh rom. i did remember reading somethning about if u updated to 2.2 from 2.1 you become unrooted.
You won't get any update notification if you are running a custom ROM. I'm sure Fresh will get updated to GB once it's released and then you can just flash the updated ROM to get it.
Yeah once HTC puts out Gingerbread for the Evo then Fresh will update accordingly but from rumors I hear the Evo might only get Ice Cream
Yay... More waiting...!!!
</sarcasm>
Yup apperently more waiting or not update at all if the evo doesn't get an update by march im pretty sure HtC will be done with it, I meant they probably annouce the Evo 2 and for people to.buy it they probably wont update this one, plus I don't really care about GB it doesn't wow me but I do care about the new sense, the themes and the extra features are nice for sense, I hope we get that at least, I don't feel like spending too much.money this year so I think I ma pass summer upgrade this time around

if u are using a Fresh ROM its 1 of the select few roms i know of that has its own built in UPDATER, look in apps. Update through that you should be fine.
when or if gingerbread becomes official it will be front page stuff.

Official Gingerbread RUU for Desire

Will there be an Official Gingerbread RUU for Desire in future for unrooted phones?
Probably. HTC has stated that Desire will get GB in 2011q2, also confirmed by some carriers like 3 UK.

any chance of pointing me in teh direction of said RUU?
Cheers
No RUU available, only leaked test ROM - try Leedroid 3.0.7 0 that's based on it.
Try RcmixS 2.0. Its GB Sense 2.1+3.0 from Sensation Rom
But there´s no GB RUU for Desire yet.
HTC Desire [UPDATED 6/14/11]: After promising an Android 2.3 upgrade for its HTC Desire handset, HTC said in mid-June that it had determined the phone would not be able to handle the Gingerbread software along with its integrated Sense UI. In a statement posted to Facebook, HTC said it's "been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow [it] both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire." HTC went on to say it was "sincerely sorry for the disappointment." British carrier Three had previously indicated the software would be ready to roll out to the Desire by the end of May. The carrier later said HTC hadn't "been able to meet the late May timings that were set."

HTC Nederlands announced that you have to use a custom ROM when you will have Sense and Gingerbread
And another phone is stuck in an old android version because of the manufacturer interface. I love Sense but the simplest solution could be:
- the ROM contains only android
- an extra app which install the interface
but then the interface is now longer an argument to but a device from this manufacturer because you can then install it everywhere. Then only the hardware counts...

1.
I know I am running InsertCoin 1.0.8 CM7 and have not used any original RUU since a long time but not providing the official ROM and relying fully to custom ROMs is wrong.
Not everyone can/wanna root their devices because they are afraid to loose the warranty by doing so or simply because they do not have enough basic knowledge to do it.
Not all Desire owners are all computer freaks like most of the people here in the forum (including me), some are simply complete illiterate about computer.
Even, I have thought about loosing the warranty over, over and over until I decided to root my Desire and to flash a custom ROM before I got the flashing addiction.
2.
Not supporting old devices with updates is acceptable but Desire is not that old. The device has to be older than 2 years before stopping any update.
Stop, htc never say, that they stop the support or never an update for the desire will come.
Only, an upgrade(!) to gingerbread is not possible.
Looks like they've retracted the statement and the HTC will be getting Gingerbread, with Sense though?
techmagister.com/2011/06/15/desire-will-get-gingerbread-htc-uk-changed-their-words-again
I think what they'll do is keep the old version of sense. I would not be willing to give up any more space on my desire, it has barely enough room for all the apps I want, so they won't update sense.
