Definatly glass, should be heat treated. I haven't bothered with a screen protector
If I were you, I'd get a screen protector anyway, just in case. Mine stayed about three weeks absolutely clean, but then two tiny scratches on my screen that I somehow got out of nowhere reminded me that if you convince yourself that the screen is unscratchable, you're wrong. Seriously, a cheap half-decent protector won't affect your screen or the colours, will be hardly noticable you won't have to treat the handset like a newborn baby, only for it to end up scratched anyway.
its glass. ask anyone who has cracked it and they'll tell you. It's not sapphire crystal though, just glass.

I guess it depends on how you treat your phone. I feel like its cheap insurance for you screen. I use realook because it looks like I don't have one on. Have you tried amazon or ebay?

I don't think you really need one a far as preventing scratches... The gorilla glass is pretty tough. but when it comes to shatter prevention they make a difference... just like taping your windows before a hurricane

I HIGHLY recommend the phantomskinz screen protector mainly because it does an incredibly AMAZING job at keeping grease and smudges very unnoticeable on the screen.
It also has a weird auto-healing thing where if it does get a scratch it'll heal itself.
It's awesome you should really get it .

Yeah thats what I thought. Now I have scratches on my screen. I think the glass is pretty shatter resistant, but why risk it. InvisaSheild makes awesome screen protectors.

I thought my screen was shatter resistant and didn't put a screen protector on.
..And then it fell off my table and the screen shattered =(. Mind you I'm pretty good about taking care of my electronics, but it happens sometimes.
I ordered a replacement screen and I'm definitely putting on a screen protector this time.
The screen isnt as tough as I thought it would be. I dropped mine on gravel from only a couple of feet and the scratches when through the screen protector to the screen. So now my screen has a few annoying scratches.
Scratches have never been an issue for me but I vertain screen protectors help significantly with smudging. The vibrant is my first touch screen phone and I became annoyed quickly with how often I had to wipe the screen (and I wash my hands often). Got an the Zagg Invisible Shield and now I rarely have to wipe the screen because of grease plus the texture feels good.
Ive had Zagg but once I tried Best Skins Ever I laughed at Zagg and their prices. BSE is the same if not better quality at a much lower price and their customer support is top notch.
Personally i use the realook anti fingerprint/antiglare screen, you dont NEED a screen protector for your phone but why not afford it some extra protection? Atleast thats my reasoning and why i will probably always use a screen protector.

Hi guys. Basically I'm getting a Desire Z/G2 tomorrow. I'm coming from a HD2 that has gorilla glass on the screen and I'm wondering what's the G2's screen toughness like? Is it scratchable? My HD2 could withstand anything. I tried keys etc. and nothing ever happened to the screen. And that was trying to scratch it lol.
So yeah I wondering is the screen glass or plastic? I've tried looking around but haven't found a definitive answer. Some say plastic, some say glass.
So yeah basically, I'm wondering is the G2's screen glass or plastic? Or atleast hardened glass that's not easily scratched?

the screen is glass, but i dont know what type. i dont even have a screen protector or other protection yet (i will eventually) and its still scratch free. and for some reason, i have a lot of finger prints on it and it magically disappears after a while maybe it just gets wiped from my pocket or something

My question is, how durable is the screen without one? Is it easily scratchable? I'd sure like to take it off, but can't stand to have a scratched screen.

A better question would be how often do you replace the screen protector? If the protector is still in good shape (they scratch hella easy) then take it off, the glass is 100x more durable than the protector. I had a screen protector on my Voyager, and when I removed it I promised I would never use one again... the screen just looks and feels better without it.
I have about 2 scratches on the protector. One is about a cm long and the other is about 2 inches, but they are light scratches. I have never replaced it.
Also, isn't the Voyager screen plastic, while the D2 screen is glass? Does that make a difference?

I've had my D2 for over a year without a screen protector. It has zero scratches. Gorilla Glass is awesome stuff.
^This. You can't scratch this screen with a knife. I have dropped it face down on pavement and had it skid, nothing. My girl uses a protector and to me it seems like it's more difficult to use the touch screen with.
I also had a clear gloss protector on my Voyager. When I was ordering the D2 online I took a knife to the Voyager screen and couldn't scratch it, so at the time it saved me 12 bucks.
so my deep scratch must be something else
I took a "generic" screen protector, and trimmed it to fit my inspire. I probably didn't need to, but I had the screen protectors already, and figured it couldn't hurt anything.. My phone is in my pocket all day, and who knows what I throw in that pocket!
I installed a generic one, it helped with scratches and specially with fingerprints
I am very rough on phones . Another layer of protection to absorb shock and scratching can hurt anything . I use a generic screen protector and change it when it starts looking bad .

No screen protector, they look terrible with air bubbles all over the place. Its like putting a plastic sheet over your nice sofa. *euh*
The screen is very scratchproof in my experience having accidentally dropped it out of my pocket onto the concrete landing face down. Not a mark on the screen although the plastic bezel is now tatty. Who cares, the screen is still mint. Happy days.
Although the screen does have something similar to gorilla glass, it can indeed get scratched (An XDA member scratched his with a belt buckle). I personally wouldn't use my Galaxy Nexus without a screen protector this soon after getting it. Properly applied screen protectors do not have bubbles.

A screen protector is a must. Its just a added insurance. Like having a car, you save it from scratches but still make sure you have insurance
I bought a screen protector with the phone and it easily lasted me 2 years. well it would have lasted longer if I had not burnt the screen with my lighter. I had put both the phone and the lighter after burning it, in my pocket. Nifty thing these protectors are.
One word of caution though, buy the screen protector from a reputed brand or shop. There are cheaper alternatives available but can mess up the screen later when you take it off.

i have removed it and no the sony logo doesnt peel off like on the z, i have applied IQ screen protector and it is way better int terms of scratches and fingerprint smudges.

Thanks, I'll check into that screen protector. I was curious too if anyone has left it off (without another one) and had any issues - I've read some people saying it has no oleophobic coating so gets a lot of fingerprints. And so I read about a product called Fusso Smartphone http://www.amazon.com/Anti-fingerprint-Oleophobic-SmartPhone-TM-necessary/dp/B008HVBU9O and am thinking maybe this can be used? Or is it good by itself after removing screen protector
I would only suggest that u use a screen protector made specifically for your phone brand and model type.
Should you get a protector ? only you can decide what kind of person you are and how to treat things you purchase.
but in my instance
I took my OEM screen protector off a day earlier than when the new one was to arrive. that was a long day, constantly had to remind my self to be careful of where I put my phone. I am quite pleased with IQ s screen protector

The screen film that comes stock on the Xperia ZL (as well as the Z) is not a screen protector...it is a film (protector) to help keep the glass from shattering. I have heard and seen the video where the kid decides to remove this level of protection. Why? Because he is crazy. I purchased the Skinomi Tech Skin screen protector (wet application) and installed it right over the stock film and it works beautifully. No degradation of the HD screen quality nor sensitivity of touch. Now, I have both a screen protector on top of the film to protect the screen from shattering as originally shipped from Sony.
I am not sure of the tempered nature of the Sony screens. Definitely not Gorilla Glass 1 or 2 but, I have heard it is from an Asian company that makes similar screens to Gorilla Glass (I thing it is called Dragontrail). I guess you could argue if the screen on the ZL was of the Gorilla Glass quality or better, the point would be mute, and no screen or shatter film protection would be necessary.
Good quality screen protector is a small investment to protect such a beautiful phone.

Sorry, but you are incorrect. It is a screen protector. In Japan, it is really common practice to sell phones with factory/service installed screen protector, because it saves person from trouble of trying to apply protector without dust getting under it, also adhesive could be used for more robust installation. So when somebody scratches theirs, they just pop in the service to get protector replaced instead of replacing whole screen - it saves company & user lot of costs.
This film protects glass from shattering to extent, but no more than any screen protector does. Its pointless to install second protector on top of it, this will only reduce backlight brightness & sensitivity (even if slightly).
Whatever it is, it sucks. I've never had a screen protector before, the glass feels way better to me, and probably looks a little better. The thing that comes on here scratches so easy - all I ever do it set it down screen up or put it in my pocket with nothing else in that pocket. Not to mention the lint it attracts..
I ordered the Fusso smartphone stuff for applying an oleophobic coating, seems to have gotten mostly good reviews, when I get it i'm removing this screen protector. I'll post results when i'm done..
So I removed the screen protector, wasn't hard at all just had to use a pin to get it started. To me, the glass feels way better and looks better. I applied the Fusso smartphone for adding an oleophobic coating last night. So far so good, after being on the phone a little bit this morning I saw some fingerprints and just used my shirt to wipe them off and they came right off - I guess the oleophobic coating is working, although it didn't seem bad even before I put it on the glass. Sony should really abandon the practice of putting a screen protector on new phones ( i don't think anyone else does), maybe include it, but this feels way better to me without it.

A question: Is the screen really scratch resistant? Searched for some videos and didn't find any screen scratch test, etc. I know you're not going to scratch your screen just to test it, but, do you leave it with keys, coins...? Would be glad to know if gets scratched easily or not. And when you take off the screen protector, is there any hard to remove glue on the screen?

What do you mean by "really scratch resistant"? Do you mean scratch-proof? Because its not, and there is no such thing as scratch-proof material. If you find something harder than glass, you can scratch it. Ordinary sand is the best example.
If you carry phone in pocket with keys (or in jeans pocket with studs which could contact screen when you move it from/to pocket), I recommend using screen protector.
To remove tackiness which could be left from original one, just use some alcohol to clean it.
