This may be a good question... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If you don't have 4G in your area you don't pay the 4G $10/month premium. What if you are traveling and happen to pass a 4G area. Will the EVO be able to connect to 4G? What are your thoughts on this?

will never happen because you have to pay the 10 bucks a month

$10 fee is not for 4G data. Period.

the $10 charge is for the EVO, not for 4G. I'll pay it if it helps sprint subsidize expanding their 4g network.

It's still cheaper than paying for AT&T or other carriers.

Question regarding the 4g coverage charge

My question is that if you'r area does not have 4g does do you still have to pay the extra ten dollars for the 4g even tho there is no 4g ?
The $10 is for premium data and not 4G. So yes it's required even if you aren't in a 4G area.
oh wow that sucks. idk if i can get the evo now

Tmobile 4G data plan?

So I was having some issues with calls dropping so I decided to give good ol Tmobile customer service a call...I've had my G1 data plan since way back, and she told me that since I did not have a 4G data plan I would not be getting 4G speeds. Anyone else hear about this?

They said a similar thing to me as well. When I tried to get my free G2 with the $20 dollar preferred android plan (I came from a $30 G1 plan), a rude representative told me if I wanted the $20 plan, I wouldn't be getting 4g speed since "It doesn't work together..."
Needless to say, I told her I would call back to another representative and get exactly what I want. And I did.
That's pretty lame....so basically are they telling me that I will never reach "4G" speeds if I don't change my plan?

They're wrong. You don't have to pay extra for 4g on T-Mobile.

This. All of their current data plans are "3G/4G". I started my plan in January this is the only option. I'm pretty sure they can't distinguish between sending you UMTS/HSDPA and HSPA+ bandwidth if your device is capable of it.
Its like, I have a G2, if I had a Nexus S (which doesn't have HSPA+), they wouldn't charge me a cheaper plan...
You can get 4g. Like I said, I just called again and a new representative gave me everything I asked for and apologized.
Yeah; I'm still on my G1 plan, and at work (fairly close to a cell tower) I regularly get 18mbit downstream speeds on speed tests.

Coming to Sprint soon, but want to know how's the service.

I'm planning on getting a family plan with unlimited data, text and 700 min. or what do u guys recommend. I'm looking for affordable payments and great service. The family plan is 3 people and I'm also planning on getting the E4GT. Just need some people to tell me hows the service. I also would like to know if sprint TV is a subscription service or is it free. Thank you

It all depends on your area weather or not youll get great service. Some areas get good service and data speeds, some leave more to be desired.
Sprint tv has some free content but most is subscriptions.
$h!tty! I love my phone but wish I could take it back to T-Mobile because there gs2 shouldn't even carry the name... the e4gt is the best phone I've ever had but sprint service is spotty...and that's being nice. I live in Orlando FL and I'm constantly dropping calls or walking around my apartment trying not to drop a call... I'm in roaming more then I care to be and the data speeds leave a lot to be desired... but I don't regret switching to sprint because of this wonderful machine I'm holding in my hands...

Hit the nail on the head... Totally depends on where your at. Worst case scenario you can sign up with sprint then opt out of your contract within 14 days if the service isnt up to par.

I live in Michigan and the sprint store told me that Michigan should have 4g by summer. I mainly care about ESPN for sprint TV. Is ESPN free?

literally the best thing you can do is find a geek with a Sprint smartphone. Ask them. (about the service/signal)
I've lived in several cities in a row with excellent Sprint 4G service, and LOVE it.

I wouldn't count on that promise coming through. Sprint's 4G partner, Clearwire, has been having trouble lately, and to save on costs, they're only expanding coverage by the minimum amount they can, given their spectrum license. Michigan might be on their upgrade list, but you would definitely be taking a risk. The Detroit area is one of the major metropolitan areas without Clearwire service, so I wouldn't go as far as saying that it won't happen.
Another factor is that both Sprint and Clearwire are planning on moving over to the LTE 4G standard, which is incompatible with our phones. There will probably be only marginal expansion in WiMax markets after the next few months.

It is when you have it... I never get 4g where I live, and I'm in a pretty populated area in California.
I've been on T-Mobile, at&t, and now I'm on Sprint. I have the Epic 4G Touch on Sprint. I don't know how much of it is the phone's wireless radio and how much of Sprint's service is to blame but I have the worst signal with Sprint. I get 4G at home and at work so I assume I live in a good area. My girl has the Motorola Photon and gets signal everywhere.
When I first got my phone, the data speeds were quick. 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi were all snappy. I don't know if it has to do with the modem change or what I'm on EK02 now and my data speed decreased. My signal strength is a bit better but still not great. It bounces up and down. When I was on T-Mobile, I just had calling and texting. It wasn't a smart phone. A Samsung phone with a keyboard and a 2.0 MP Camera. I always had full bars with that phone. I always got my text and calls on the time they were sent.
at&t had the best signal but I had a few drop calls. Too expensive and not worth the plan you pay for. If it were unlimited data I may have stayed with them but eff a 2GB plan.
I have the most inconsistency with Sprint. I blame 50 percent on the phones wireless radio and 50 percent on Sprint's service. Sprint has good plans for fair prices compared to at&t and Verizon. But you also take a down fall with the service. It's great they have unlimited data but is it worth unlimited if your internet speed is choppy or super slow?
I love the E4GT as a phone (although it does feel a little plasticky compared to my old EVO) and I have never dropped any calls when using Sprint. Battery life seems much better than my EVO too.
In my part of Las Vegas though, the data is pretty slow. If I am lucky I can get 250 kbps on 3G, when I get 4G it is very good, between 4 and 10 Mbps typically. Every now and then I will get decent 3G speeds when out and about in town, but it's a good job I use wifi at home, it would be unbearable otherwise (slow 3G as already mentioned and I can't get 4G indoors here, if I sit in the garden I am OK though!)
Sprint is far past horrible. You can't use your data properly. Its so slow that's its ridiculous. Don't get hyped by the unlimited BS. I can't wait for my contract to end.

I looked at there coverage and it shows full voice service for michigan. The only thing that concerns me now is the data speeds. Can any can tell me a good affordable 3 person family plan. I want to know how much it would cost monthly to have unlimited data, text, and like 700 min.

Trust me that coverage map is a flat out lie. I get ZERO service where I work and the map says that I should have good coverage. If I should have good coverage then why am I constantly roaming at work. The maps a scam.

The Epic 4G Touch is a really nice phone. It just has a really bad wireless radio and being on Sprint's network doesn't help. It'll probably be the best gingerbread phone out if it were on say Verizon Wireless.
Depends on your area. My speeds are about 500-700 on a good day. Pretty sad that metropcs 3g is better in my area. My brother pulls above 1000 kbps 90% of the time on his evo 4g flashed to metro.

Epic 4g on Metro PCS, Does the $40 unlimited plan work with using this phone?

I've never had metro pcs so i'm not sure how you transfer the epic 4g to it besides the flashing process which I looked up and can do. But as far as paying for service, would I pay for the $40 dollar unlimted data voice, text plan? or do i have to pay for the more expensive smartphone plans that are 4g LTE?
Does the Epic 4g actually get 4g signal through Metro PCS?
No response?
So nobody on the Epic 4g Forum has flashed their phone to Metro PCS? Help por favor...
No 4g through metro, yes though it will work. Text, voice and 1x data flashed correctly. 3g works too but good luck finding it. There is a thread btw.

You would have to have a data contract to use 4g on your evo. It would be easier to have a WiFi tether instead of the 4g tether.

Sounds to me like the 4G service just didn't get deactivated as fast. It's a different network than the normal phone/data service.
If you think you're going to buy a second hand EVO and the 4g is just going to magically work and be free then I would like to buy some weed off you...
