Samsung noob

I'm quite new to Samsung's Android processes. I'm pretty well versed in HTC Devices but Samsung phones are just entirely different. I have a HTC Desire as well as this Galaxy S (Touchwiz seriously sucks )
I want to root the phone and install a Stablish FroYo ROM on the phone. Is that possible?
No its not, caus there is now stable froyo rom atm.
For your root problem check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742403
You can do it manualy too, like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
FroYo will be realesed in early September. Those Froyo Firmwares you can find here are alpha versions, which were leaked. Furthermore jit is broken in JP2 and JP3 (Froyo releases)
I prefer JM2, it feels most responsive, this is 2.1 leaked release.
about touchwiz, just install LauncherPro oder ADW Launcher from market and set it as default

Naturally
Installed LauncherPro after 5 minutes of TouchWiz. Still laggy but meh. Gonna get going with rooting it now and I may try my hand at a Sense UI port once I get a foothold in Galaxy S Development. Sense UI on the Galaxy S would be lovely.
Yeah what he said, don't bother with Froyo atm it's to buggy, i would say go for JM5 + SamSet 1.9c custom ROM + One click Lagfix BETA 2-1
that all = a perfectly smooth SGS, with no issues
and yeah would love to see Sense UI on SGS, it certainly has the capability to use it.
question to you who have used both touchwiz and sense. Why does tw such so much? I think its quite neat but i have nothing to compare with.
From what ive read the many sense-widgets are very hard on cpu/mem

For one it's laggy. Second of all it looks like a cheap tacky iPhone clone. Not as classy. Sense UI looks much smoother and much more professional.
The Galaxy itself comes with only 4(?!) stock Android widgets and a couple of crappy Samsung Widgets. Sense phones come with a massive amount of widgets.
Here are a list of stock widgets on the Desire
Analog Clock (HTC And Android versions)
Bookmarks
Calculator
Calendar x2
Clock (7 of them including the one with the kick ass weather animations)
Facebook for android
FM Radio
Footprints
Friend Stream
Google Search
Latitude
Mail (Scrollable mail widget supporting exchange and POP/IMAP)
Market widget
Messages widget
Music Widgets
News widget
News and Weather widget
Photo frame (multiple sizes)
Stocks
Settings widgets for almost every setting
Sync widget
Twitter for Sense widget
Weather widget
Youtube Widget
The whole interface seems more streamlined within eachother as well. Samsung would do well to release Stock Android phones tbh.
Is there any of those that is not accessible on the market or have replacements thats better there? Can you sideload them to the sgs?

U can get launcher pro and built-in to plus version (not free) u'll find a calendar, bookmark, contact widget that mimick the sense widgets very well.
Does any one know if samsung's widgets are launcher dependant ? if all they rely on is the framework, then changing the intents of the widgets in the manifest should make it available in other launchers.

Not that I know of. The only one that mimicks a sense widget somewhat well is fancy weather widget which even at that doesn't have full screen weather animations.
They're all completely dependent on the Sense UI framework as does any HTC app. No developer has managed to get them working on anything but a Sense based ROM.

[Q] Looking for a stable 2.3.3 ROM with WORKING GPS

My friend just got Wildfire S, android 2.3.3 with sense 2.1 and it reminded me how nice a stock ROM works, with GPS too! so I'm keen to get a 2.3.3 ROM with working everything, (especially with GPS, WiFi, data and such.)
I have a HTC Wildfire/Buzz
Answers would be much appreciated, Thanks guys
Unfortunately there isnt a 2.3 sense for wildfire yet. There is one experimental but it is not for daily use.You can use rempuzzle or wildpuzzle both of them have 2.1 sense version.

I'm already using the latest CM7 Stable, but its so damn buggy.
You can use LauncherPro which is a fast launcher compared to adw launcher which is terrible. Also if you dont like cm7 you can use WildPuzzle
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877243
or
RemPuzzle
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978197
these two are sense roms 2.2 with 2.1 sense!

Eeeeeeerm!!!! Instead of just stating that adw is terrible why don't you give some explanations why?
I have tried virtually every launcher I could get my hands on and in my personal opinion adw ex is perfect. It runs smooth, doesn't use up too much memory/resources and is highly customizable. Now I wont and can't say its the best just like I wont and can't say others are terrible because each person has different preferences and needs as to what they want from a launcher. So I suggest a simple recommendation with explanation would have been a better angle to take because I totally disagree with the comment "compared with adw launcher which is terrible"
" once its gone,its GONE."
Ok then!!! For me ADW launcher is not as good as launcherpro.Waiiiiiiiiiiiiit! You are talking about ADW launcher EX which i find as good as launcherpro but the preinstalled free version of ADW launcher is buggy for me!
Same here
Looking for the same thing ....

Already using launcher pro, I want 2.3.3 for the tabbed notification bar menu.
None of these roms say anything about GPS?
GPS in these roms works like a charm. If you want the tabbed notification bar you can create it via uot kitchen (http://uot.dakra.lt/) which is an online tool that let you customise your android phone. Navigate to Kitchen tab(http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/) and select status bar. Then you tick the box use this mode and it will enable various settings for your statusbar. If you scroll down you will see a setting called "Quick settings tabs(sense 2.1)". When you finish go to file upload and follow the instructions.
Here is a video about UOT Kitchen:

[APP] Miui Home Launcher for ICS

Don't know if this would work for our ICS builds (still on Unnamed Rom for GB) but I suppose it's worth a try, supposedly mimics Miui pretty well.
http://www.coolsmartphone.com/2012/...auncher-is-now-available-for-all-ics-devices/
Heres the .apk for it
http://bigota.d.miui.com/miuiapp/MiHome_095beta_100_1.apk
Let me know if it works for our ICS builds.
It's pretty new so I assume there will be some bugs that need to get ironed out,
More info here:

Credit goes to Xiaomi for creating the app.
It works just fine, using it on AOKP b34. I'm using the tablet interface so it's a bit weird since the icons are spaced 4x4. Oh, and it's smooth, love the fact that it also themes the lockscreen.

[Q] Your impressions on alternative launcher and dialer

hi guys
i'm a new user in Xda, would you tell me your impression and experience with alternative launcher and dialer on your DHD?
Sorry for my poor english, i hope this thread is in right section .
Good Bye
Go launcher and Dialer one is the best combo for me...
Sent from my Desire HD using xda app-developers app
I've used Go Launcher when I was running CM7 (and of course the default ADW). Go was slick, but seemed to be a bit of a battery drain. I recently installed JellyTime ROM and tried the default launchers installed (Trebuchet and Nova) Treb is very basic, Nova isn't bad. I am now using Apex. So far I like it and it seems to work pretty well.

Thanks for your comments,
now i use QQlauncher and i think it is very nice and fast launcher, but i love MiHome Launcher too, i am waiting for MIUI JELLYBEAN stable release to have a fully Miui experience , because the last edition have a lot of bug :crying:
Bye
Prefer SS launcher, really another way to present your desktop, it wipe out the limitation of m x n icons desktop. Instead it uses layer as desktop.
spb shell is good its has 3d effects
Depends on what version of Android you have. I like Holo & Apex launcher for 4.0.x and up. For Android 2.3.x I use miuihome/miui launcher or GoLauncher. If you like effects, you can go with spbShell 3D launcher. It's nice for the futuristic and 3D feel, but it lacks in other key features that other launchers have. If you are unsure, YouTube has a video of practically every app or launcher out there. Check them out before you make a purchase you might regret. I hope this helps you or someone out.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4g
For ics I prefer the touchwiz launcher. You have to flash a zip to make it work right, but its the smoothest launcher I've ever used.
Following that for jb I prefer atom launcher, followed by apex. Atom is decently smooth, and has tons of eye candy.
If I'm on gb I like either adw or go. Adw is fast and light, and looks okay. Plus it let's me theme my phone to look like the nexus s. Go is slightly heavier(not an issue on our device usually) but it has the most features for any launcher you can think of.
I like miui v4, but it lacks certain features I find important (organize folder contents by name)
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app
I use Moto Razr M launcher, or xperia launcher. They both seem to do well for me...
Nova launcher rocks Super smooth for me so far.
yesssss
