Any way to use standard Android Contacts app? (unrooted) - Desire General

Anyone know if I can use the standard Android Contacts app rather than "people" on my unrooted Desire?
I want to be able to share contacts as QR codes (everyone I know has an android phone) and "People" doesn't have that option
I want to keep all my other HTC stuff though
Any help appreciated (I did find a link on another forum to the contacts app but the file has been deleted)
thanks

You might want to try EasyShare instead, it's in the Market & it's free. Works great on my Desire.

Impossible to do unless you root an install a custom mod capable of it.
Afaik even the stock rooted rom cannot install stock contacts, it has to be a custom rom.

Stock Roms for EVO

I rooted using toasts method. Tried a bunch of ROMs and don't really like any of them. What is the closest to STOCK Rom out there? I like the HTC sense and stock EVO but want to maintain root for wifi tether. Any recomendations on a close to stock Rom greatly appreciated!
you can use the stock supersonic roms to keep root and maintain the stock experience. do a quick search at the top of this forum for the guides and roms sticky.

prob best for the q&a thread.
im biased but i think my ROM, which i designed for exactly this intent is the best stock ROM. of course, thats my opinion. it loads the stock kernel and a completely stock system, with root that properly works with wifi tether and small developer tools like busybox, flash_image, and a shortcut remount script.
it loads all the stock apps, everything stock!

if you want to remove some stock apps, i have a small web site tool

Just reroot via this method and you will 100% stock rom with root access and nand unlocked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
I really like the stock experience as well, and this allows me to maintain that + add things like the FPS fix (godsend), & setcpu.
Enjoy.
Thanks FluShot! That is exactly what I wanted. One question though.... can I format the SD card now without loosing root? I have a bunch of junk on there from all the "messing" around.
Try omj eclair rom
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I think Caulkin posted an entirely stock rom, it has nothing but root added.
However I think OMJ or JoeyKrim is an even better idea, the only changes they have made are adding in some tools you may eventually need, which won't be in the way. BusyBox for example gives you tools for backing up, adding, and removing data and apps, but it doesn't even add an icon to your drawer, it is just available when needed from the terminal (and is probably less than 100k, but I don't know).

I used this method and lost all capabilities of syncing my facebook contacts and pictures. a few of us have had that problems but no one seems to have the answer. =/
I used Facebook sync from the market to get all my contact pictures imported. Not sure if that is how you are supposed to do it but it worked for pictures then I removed the app.

[Q] Help..

Hello. I use a stock HTC Desire updated to 2.2 and I have a few problems :
1. The most important issue, I cannot access the Market, because I live in Syria, and we're from that blacklist thing.
2. Facebook, Youtube, MySpace, and a few more websites are blocked in my country, and there is no proxy option in the Wi-Fi, and I can't use proxy with my Data connection bescase it won't work. (Guess my provider doesn't allow that)
So, to have access to all of the above, I think rooting is the best solution, but I find it confusing. And if there another way around, I'd prefer it.
Also, I want to have (if I decide to root) :
1. The exact same Sense UI.
2. Android 2.2 (offical HTC Desire 2.2 ROM)
3. I want the Radio version unchanged. (or re-installing it?)
4. HTC Widgets. ([Wi-fi, Bluetooth, Moblie Data, Profile, etc..] switches, HTC Clock, People, etc....)(All of them)
5. Proxy option in Wi-Fi. (or an application if this feature not available)
6. Market access.
Excuse me for being a noob.....Sorry.
Yeah, in conclution, I want to have everything the same, I want no change in my dear phone (excluding root access and proxy option and Market access)
Can you provide me with the needed program links, tutorials, etc....
Oh, and what is the easiest way to root (unrevoked3, anything else?) with tutorials.
Thank You Greatly
By the way, what is the safest rooting method?
I suggest using the unrevoked (www.unrevoked.com) method to root. Does not require a goldcard. Just make sure you install the correct usb drivers from HTC sync.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
But does it work with Android 2.2, what if it doesn't, is there any way to downgrade my phone.
What about the drivers, where and how can I get them?
Sorry just re-read your post.
Unrevoked does not work with stock 2.2....sorry
I've tried unrevoked and it just wont work for me!

Rooted my HTC Desire - now what?

So i rooted my phone this morning. Used the unrevoked to do this. I am not too technical so i needed an easy way to do this otherwise i might have bricked my phone.
Okay so now that i have rooted it i have the following questions:
1) i want to be able to save apps to my sd card (not on froyo yet) - i am not keen on these customized roms and prefer something more standard what should i do?
2) how do i change the font on my phone
3) what else should i consider doing since i have rooted
With all of the above, hopefully they are easy to follow, as i mentioned i am not too technical.
Thanks in advance.
In answer to (1)...
- Install Titanium Backup from the market (there is a free and a payed version).
- Make sure you install BusyBox or Titanium Backup won't work (You should be able through the app by clicking the 'problems button').
- Long click apps under the heading 'backup/restore' (in Titanium Backup) and select 'move to SD' to transfer apps to SD card.
- You can also backup all your apps and settings through Titanium Backup.
In answer to (3)
- Google 'android wifi tether', click the first link and download the Desire version and install on your phone.
- Should allow you to tether your phone's 3g network to other phones/computers/ipods/ipads/etc: basically to share you internet connection with other devices!
Good luck and have fun!!
Thank you for that feedback.
So if i understand correctly titanium backup can also be used to move apps to the SD card?
I thought you needed froyo or a2SD??
Froyo is needed if you do not want root. But root access allows apps like titanium backup to store to SD card
I'm on the same situation as you, I rooted the Desire but I didn't do anything more, for some reason I can't install busybox, so titanium backup doesn't work. Can anyone help me with this?
I had to downgrade my desire to 2.1 eclair.
im puzzled now tho, do i flash it with a 2.2 stock rom and then unrevoke again and then flash it with a custom rom. or can i jus put a custom rom on it now.
ive revoked it also now. it went from a hboot .093 to a .083. after the downgrade.
can i get back up to 0.93 or does it not really matter?
I was thinkin of installing that jstyle miui rom?

click on the problems button in Titanium Backup - it will install busybox for you.
Hi people,
Im posting here because:
1) I've just rooted my desire and was wondering where to go next, and....
2) was scared to post my own thread!
So if anyone can shed some light on my questions I'd be well chuffed, and if my experience of "all things root" can help anyone even newer to it than me, double happy days. In relation to changing fonts Dogstar55, I think you have to have the S-Off "full root" to do this, try searching Alpharev.
Im currently have a HTC Desire, running CyanogenMod 6.0.2, unfortunatley I still have S-ON. I think im going to brave the Alpharev method soon.
I have tried about 4 different Roms so far, I found that DeFroST was the best for me but ran into issues with sending MMS and Bluetooth connectivity. I did some homework and found Cyanogen, which I believe DeFroST was based on? Now I found that overclocking my device was easy with DeFroST and its easy download UI to install new Kernels to allow overclocking and N Wifi Mods Etc.
How do I install new Kernels with my Cyanogen Mod? Id love to overclock it as its saying that my max is only 528MHz? with DeFroST i got it to 1192MHz?
Thankyou for taking the time to read this and i apologize if its a bit of waffle, nervous first post!

Did you use the right version of Cyanogen? I flashed it months ago and it runs at full speed... Anyway, to answer your question, the kernels can be downloaded via ROM Manager, under extras (right below the Cyanogen download, in fact)
Had a look under the menu you pointed out. I've just got the 2 new superuser options there? I have bought the pro version aswell?
I've managed to get the speed up. I hadn't re-set up Setcpu since my flash onto Cyanogen. Now running at 1132Mhz. I'm still interested in new kernels and mods though, could you point me to an external source if I can't do it through Rom manager?

I'm seem to be having issues with my market since the move to Cyanogen. Has anyone else had problems with downloads just disappearing?
HTC Desire. Cyanogen 6.0.2. S-ON
Yes, Market seems to have some problems lately. It's device and rom independend

[Q] new theme and android control by pc

Hello i am Jamie from Holland and i'm new at this forum
A lot o questions i already found on this forum but i have still 2 i can't find. I don't know much about phone's so i hope my questions are not stupid
I have a htc desire with original android 2.2.2 with warrenty, so i DON'T want to root my phone. (or a possebility to update my phone without root or losing apps?)
at first:
Is there a new theme for my phone like android 3 or 4?
seccond:
I want to control my phone from my pc (to use whatsapp also on my pc), i found a lots of programs but they are all for ROOTED phones.
Thanks,
up,...................
You can use an ICS Launcher.
https://market.android.com/details?...sMSwxLDEsIm1vYmkuU3luZGljYXRlQXBwcy5JQ1N2MiJd
Rooting is not risky or anything, just plug you phone in your pc and use unrevoked. Finished in a minute or so and then it's rooted.. But if you don't feel good about it, don't
thanks, i downloaded the unrevoked program, before i root is there a posibitety to backup my phone rom? And if i root, do i loss my warrenty?
and he program said, make shure you DONT have installed htc sync, do the mean on my pc or phone? and can i use it after it is rooted again?
thanks
btw can i also flash my rom with this program?
Read guides before you do anything, they are all over the forums just search.
Also before you do anything write down your software/radio version so you can download appropriate RUU in case you need go back to factory default ROM.
You'll also need to know how to partition SD card. (most ROMs requires it)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
i installed the theme app but now i cant put my old htc sense widgets on my desktop. is there a posibillety to have my old sense widgets? (i looked onb the market but the fake ones aren't so nice as the original)
Not the exact same ones, no.
There are some replicas on the market, especially for the 4x2 clock/weather there is a great replica that looks exactly like the real thing.

[Q] Disable Tether Manager

Hello, I just signed up to the forum today. However, I've thoroughly searched this forum and Google'd trying to find useful information. I've gotten the jest of what needs to be done but no clear step by step details.
First, if I've rooted my GalaxySiii, am using stock ROM, with WiFi-tether app and it's working to tether to laptap. Do I "still" need to remove the TMO tether manager if I plan on using a VPN (Virtual Private Network)? In plain English, can TMO tell I'm tethering my data connection if I'm using a VPN?
Second, I've downloaded Titanium Backup * root (free version), (I KNOW I NEED THE PAID TO FREEZE) but was trying to ensure I could locate (see) the Tether Manager before I pay $7 for an app I don't need. I've never been able to locate TMO tether manager or anything with the word tether for the matter within Titanium or Root Explorer. The only TMO apps I see in Titanium (only 3 tabs within Titanium (Overview / Backup/Restore / Schedules), I'm using the Backup/Restore tab is (CallerTunes 3.0, MobileLife Contacts 3.8.01, T-Mobile My Account 2.1.1348, T-Mobile Name ID 1.9.6, T-Mobile TV 5.0.0.73-178477, and Visual Voicemail 2.0.28).
While in Root Explore app, I have no idea what I'm looking at. I would love to delete bloatware and such but am afraid of deleting the wrong thing. Okay, so I given you the details now here is the second question. I need someone to explain to me and I'm sure many others in plain English, with all the steps, how to disable or delete/uninstall the TMO tether manager either in Titanium or Root Explorer because there is no such app (Titanium) or APK in (Root Explorer) that just saying Tether Manager? Is it be hidden or under a different name?
I'm sorry for the extensive info, but I did watch the NOOB video when I registered and it said to be as thorough as possible without being too winded. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance with my problem! )

It's been a while since I've had the stock ROM and I'm working off of memory here so bear with me.
I'm assuming when you say you're using a WiFi-tether app you mean a third party one and not the one that came with the phone. If that's the case if the Tether app you downloaded specifically meant for root? I don't know about any of the other Tether apps out there, but WiFi Tether for Root works for some on the stock ROM. As for disabling Tether Manager try going to the default Task Manager by hitting the left softkey>Manage Apps>All and see if there's any Tether Manager or Samsung Tether apps and disable from there.
As long as you're tethering through the app I recommended though, Samsung shouldn't be able to tell if you're tethering your data plan. Sorry I don't have more information regarding running a rooted stock ROM, but from what I understand WiFi Tether for Root works on any AOSP based ROM and I can tell you that it works on CM10 for sure.
Also, can we please choose a less painful color for my eyes... like say black. Or charcoal. Or grey. Or even carbon fiber.
I feel like you're asking 12 different questions. Most of which have been covered on the forums. It's good to be thorough but please please please get your first questioned answered before asking 3 more.
Which is most important?
Sorry, this was a duplicate post that I've deleted!

Really? Where? Because I've searched the forum and many of the answers are vague, incomplete or do not include the steps to accomplish as I've asked.
I would like this portion of my question answered. Thank you for you help!

@ OP - I know what you're asking about, because that's how it worked on the GSII
However, the app we used to freeze to get away with it (tethering manager) is not present in any recognizable form as far as I can tell on the GSIII
Plus they now use alternate methods to detect tethering, such as the browser you are using, etc
All in all, just pay the $15 bucks a month or use one of the methods outlined in several threads in this forum. Although I believe they only work if used a specific way, with specific browsers, etc
Hope that answers your question
Ok, much easier to read your post now. The method that I'm currently using requires a custom ROM. It's been shown to work for others as well. First you need to upgrade your ROM to Cyanogenmod10. There's an entire thread on that in the Original Android Development section.
The app I use is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ
I'm not sure if that's the same one you currently have or not, but I know for a fact that the above app works.
Once you install the custom ROM you no longer need to worry about disabling the Tether Manager as it won't even be installed.
If you want to stick with a stock ROM there are workarounds, but like the user above me posted you'll have to dig around the forums. I had the stock ROM for about 2 hours before abandoning it.
Okay, I will upgrade my ROM. The link to the app you've given me is the app I'm currently using. I know that they will still be able to see that I'm tethering even if I upgrade my ROM; however they wont be able to stop it. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if using a VPN is a workaround for their snooping?
