Radio issues when using GSM ROM on CDMA phone (or vice versa) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Someone was telling me that when you take a ROM from a GSM phone (such as Froyo 2.2 from the N1) and port it over to a CDMA device (such as the EVO), the battery life will be terrible.
He says this is because the build is tweaked for GSM and although it will work on a CDMA phone (since Android supports it), it will still actively look for a GSM signal, causing major battery drain. He says that his unlocked GSM Hero has this problem because he has a ROM that was ported over from a CDMA Hero.
Does this make any sense? And if so, will waiting for the official AOSP 2.2 help the situation?

Not a single person can answer my question? Sheesh...

A CDMA radio will need to subsitute the GSM radio in the ROM, otherwise the device would just be useless.

we run into this on the sprint hero porting CM roms from the n1
there is a app in the market called "network" you just download that hit menu, select radio band (then android phone fc's) scroll down to set preferred network type, choose CDMA auto (PRL) and your set.
this must be done at every boot.
one way you can check is settings>about phone>battery use>cell standby if this shows Time without signal 50% then you have that bug.

Awesome. Thanks for the info

Using the GSM radio on CDMA Touch Pro2

Has anyone pulled this off? I need to use the GSM radio on my CDMA/GSM Verizon Touch Pro 2. Booting either the CDMA ROM or the GSM ROM, neither can see the GSM radio with the SIM card inserted. Frustrating I appreciate all the work you all have done so far!
And for what it's worth, the port is amazing. I can boot up, use wifi and otherwise enjoy a great phone experience (sans radio of course).
Did you remove force_cdma from your startup.txt? I haven't tried it, but I'm pretty sure you can get the GSM radio working.
So playing around with it more, I can get the radio to work part of the time but it's very inconsistent and I can't reproduce why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I did remove the force_cdma bit as well.
Also, on this model, any attempts to use the GPS immediately crashes out of Android (i.e., Google Maps or even Google.com mobile where it tries to geolocate).
Has anyone else had more luck? I was pleasantly surprised that for an hour last night the radio was on and in roaming mode. I didn't get data working but that could have been due the particular SIM. Still, potentially promising.
I can confirm 100% certain now that this will NOT work if you use a Verizon handset and roam using the included Verizon SIM card. The GSM version boots fine, but Verizon requires seeing the CDMA ESN to authenticate over the GSM network. Since this rom does not acknowledge the presence of the CDMA side of things, the ROM will not get data. Also the GPS definitely does not work in this configuration and crashes out.
You *CAN* use a non-Verizon SIM successfully, but you won't get the goodness of Verizon's unlimited global data using their SIM, which is a killer deal for those that roam outside the US.

[Q] GSM network mode

I have noticed people managed to change their network mode to GSM only mode??? How do you that?? I only have 2 options: WCMDA and GSM/WCDMA auto?? Is this thing vary due to your courier?? Currently I am with 3 Australia. I wish I have the option to switch only to GSM. From experience, it can save you a lot of battery.
If you don't have the option then you can't pick it. I don't know if that means it's been removed or if it's simply because 3 don't offer a 2G network service (GSM mode). They probably have some 2G sharing but only in spots without 3G so you still have the GSM/WCDMA auto mode.
That's the best I can offer since I know that's how it works with 3 over here in the UK where they have only their 3G network. The firmware likely has GSM mode disabled for that reason but wait for more to back me up or prove me wrong.

I have a feeling it could be the ROM or firmware that comes with it has it disabled the GSM only option. My Desire HD is the UK version. I am not sure if the other Australian version (from Voda or 3) have that options. With my original desire (and also using 3), I have that GSM only option available. So I dont think it's because 3 doesnt offer 2G network.
Get Advanced settings from Market. You can set it to GSM Only in the phone information menu.

Thank you for sharing..yes, it works....but I will try out and see if it does save a lot of battery life.
Type *#*#4636#*#* in the phone dialer to get to testing menu. Under phone info you can set different options that are not otherwise available. No app is required.

Thanks for the info. I have tested both method...both work. But the only problem, how do we set it permanently?? I mean I have noticed every time you reboot the phone, the setting changes?? and I have to set it back to GSM only??
but even if you could technically switch it to gsm, would it actually make a difference? surely if the actual mobile network is pure 3g and no 2g, then switching on the phone wouldn't change a thing? as its not actually possible to use 2g on 3 network?(because they built network from scratch out of 3g is what they always boast about anyway..)
This is strange. I have an unbranded bought sim free HTC sensation here in the UK which Im using on the 3 network and I dont have the option under network to set it to gsm only. This option should be here on an unbranded handset, and its there on my old Desire which was also bought unbranded sim free when Im using that on the 3 network.
Anyone shed any light on this? I know the work arounds mentioned above, but Im more interested in why the option is missing on my handset.
Cheers
PS I know this is the Desire HD thread but its the only topic I could find on this subject so far.
I don't think it matters, just don't even bother with the settings menu for that in the first place. in the Testing menu just set the radio to either GSM Auto (PRL) or GSM Only. GSM gives more talk time.

GSM Only Option has disappeared

I just updated to Android Revolution HD 5.2.3 and Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 from an earlier Froyo version of Android Revolution.
Unfortunately, I have now lost the ability to change my Network Mode to GSM only. Previously when I clicked on Network Mode I could choose between two options, GSM only and GSM/WCDMA auto. Now the two options that I have are WCDMA only and GSM/WCDMA auto.
Is this the fault of the new ROM or the new Radio or neither. It's quite annoying as I often have to change to GSM only when network condtions aren't optimal and the phone is wasting battery trying to lock onto a WCDMA signal when there is none.
I realise I can change it via *#*#4267#*#*. However, that's not optimal as it isn't that quick a change between modes.
Cheers for any help.
Most likely the radio.change to another to see if option retwns. If not change rom.

Doh I think it must be the new ROM build. As I tried a few different older radio builds and none gave me the GSM only option.

Switching between gsm and cdma software?

hmm.. I dunno what happened but I've now knocked both my gsm providers down somehow + Verizon isn't starting with sim in?
I don't have a IMEI in about > status I don't have a verizion hex in there either.. the mode I'm "trying" to run is GSM / WCDMA preferred or global
Can someone explain to me how to switch between the two..? Boz1 told me it was possible and yet.. my radio is now playing dead even with my airvoice/at&t line.. (I'm assuming if I pull out the sim it'll work on Verizon again and it did!) but I want to get it where I can switch between Verizon and one gsm provider through software.. (no reboot)
I have active service at this time with tmobile/lyca, at&t/airvoice and verizion/page plus
I'm currently using cyagenmod 7.2

thanks I looked at that before.. but now I see you "scroll down" still I don't seem to be figuring it out.. I keep hitting no service..
(least with gsm) I have to wonder if it's cause my IEME is blank or something?
Also is there a way to auto-dial the number if I'm going to have to do it every time?

Select WWE or US version on aroma is ok for sprint version?

I hace an htc m9 sprint. I have some issue because I cant select just 2G (when I'm in bad reception area), or in my signal bar there is just a G (dont know If I'm on 3G or 2G).
So I want to know if its ok to select that my device is not sprint in aroma (for custom roms of course). I'm not S-OFF.
Or there is any way to force my sprint version to show H, H+, E Icons on signal bar instead of GSM?
Nope, it is what it is. G is for gprs which is basically 1.5G. If your phone cannot lock onto a higher bandwidth there is nothing you can do because it simply isnt there.
No matter how many rain dances you do or human sacrifices you make, you can't make the phone do it.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Please search via google for the difference between GSM and CDMA. Since those are two different technologies chances are high that you can't get high speed connections if you try to use a CDMA device on a GSM network or vice versa. Hardware and partition layout differ between the CDMA and the GSM versions of the M9.
The options in the aroma installer are meant to be chosen according to the hardware you're using and not according to your actual carrier.

I know about that, but the speeds are good. Like any other 3G phones. I just want the options to force for example just 2G when I'm on 3G low signal area. and show the corrects icons. The phone was from a friend first, and he told me that before upgrading, shows H on signal bars. If I go to about, network, here say HSPA
