USB on the Go - Desire General

Anything like this possible?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/30/nokia-n8s-usb-on-the-go-support-demoed-lesser-phones-turned-in/

Indeed, I'd like such a feature...

if im correct its possible on windows mobile with even more options.
edit.

'On top of that, he is looking into getting some compatibility for Android devices as well.'

I have found this link http://www.tombom.co.uk/blog/?p=124 too which has a modified cable for the DROID to be used as usb host. but i have read that drivers for G1 are online for this task. Is there any driver or mode we can do to have our HTC Desire act as usb reader...it would be awsome if i can read my flash drives or friend's on my phone without pc

There is a way to make your phone a wifi access point... it works, but slaughters the battery. I'm not aware of any way to tether it via USB currently...
I think there is this kind of software on linux, you might want to look into it a little bit to see if there is an android build...but I wound put too much hope on that....
there is no way possible on this right now not on usb because android on WinMo does not support usb connections so they being said there might not be a way to this now but in the future im sure our developers will work there way on getting usb working.

Issue with Native USB Tethering in Windows 7

Hey all. Phone freakin rocks, and the OTA update to allow us to use WHAT SHOULD'VE BEEN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE is great.
However, I'm having issues with getting the native USB tether to work.
I connected my phone to my Windows 7 Pro 32-bit netbook with USB debugging enabled. It said it needed drivers, so I had it install the necessary drivers. It was having problems with the ADB USB drivers so I found the solution on this forum and installed the fixed driver.
I go to the Settings menu in the phone, go to Tethering and enable USB tether. After a small delay, Windows 7 tells me there was some a problem installing the device driver, no driver found. Device Manager shows "Android Phone" under Other, and no matter what I point to the USB driver won't work.
I disconnect the phone, turn off USB debugging, and reconnect. Same problem.
I disconnect again, turn USB debugging back on, reconnect, and told it to turn on Mass Storage. Still no dice.
I'm puzzled here, as numerous reports state that It Just Works. Wonder why I'm having issues.
I haven't permrooted just yet - still using Visionary. Let me know if this is an issue.

USB Tethering
Here, I had this posted under USB Tethering. You just need an INF file.
You got the OTA update that enables wifi calling and usb/wireless tethering, right?
On your G2 Go to Settings, Wireless & networks, Tethering & portable hotspots, Help.
Under this help guide, go to the website link for USB listed there.
Go to this website and choose "USB Tethering with Windows XP"
Download the INF file "tetherxp.inf"
On your G2 check the "USB tethering" option, and connect your G2 via USB cable to your computer. Instead of using windows to automatically seach for drivers, direct the wizard to the "tetherxp.inf" file.
This will also work for Windows 7 if your having problems tethering there.

Yeah, I saw that help link. I didn't think I needed it since I was on a Windows 7 machine. I'll go take a crack at it since at worst I'll just be back at square one.
Thanks for letting me know!
I used the driver for the HTC Hero for windows vista just google it. I have the vista drivers installed on windows 7 pro and it works great, its even faster then PDAnet which I used since my 1.6 phone days.

I am having same trouble to and I have Win7-64bit. The pdanet drivers only seems good for the adb functions. The tetherxp.inf is not being recognized at all for me.
Same issue
Hey guys, I can't tether my G2 / Vision to my Windows 7 64-bit machine either. Same issue as you all are having. The tetherxp.inf seems like it might work, but possibly only on 32-bit machines.
Is there a driver that will work on Windows 7 64-bit?

I got this working once using drivers downloaded from this forum. They worked.... S l o w l y. Maybe my laptop's usb sucks, but in any event it was enough to drive.me crazy.
I got MUCH better performance using wifi tethering. I just use the usb cable to keep the wifi & 3g radios from sucking the battery dry.

Im on a Windows 7 64bit machine and Tether(wireless and USB), ADB and Fastboot all work perfectly, I had to install HTC sync to my home computer to get the right drivers. The HTC sync program doesnt work with the Tmobile G2only with the Desire Z because it is Sense based, but it will install the right drivers for the G2, just install it from the following link and then hook up your G2 or Desire Z to your computer and it will install the right drivers for you:
http://www.htc.com/www/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=1058&news_id=804
Just a side note make sure you are using the micro USB cable that shipped with the phone, some people were having problems using other micro USb cables.
WOW
You guys still haven't figured this out? I've been USB tethering on my XP/Vista/and 7 box since the day i got the new OTA. You need the proper drivers and also have to configure windows to use RNDIS.
It is truly that simple. I've walked many people through this already and have now started charging!
BTW
All of the methods described by the majority of the members on this site are just way too many steps. You don't have to do anything other than install 2 proper drivers. You don't need PDANet nor do you need HTC sync. You just need to be tech savvy enough, not fone savvy.

Seriously, I've seen u post the same thing in forum after forum without actually helping anyone... do that business or get the pot. Why on earth would you rather have people email u privately for your "wisdom" instead if just posing it?
Stop trolling.
here is the link to the driver for win7 and vista:
handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/HTC-Hero-Drivers-Download-81097.html
here is where I found it at:
ozamora.com/2010/11/usb-tethering-htc-g2/ (the forum bot doesn't let me post a link with http:...etc. so you have to copy and paste the address yourself)
you can also search google for HTC_Driver_64.zip or HTC_Driver_32.zip
if the option to install doesn't come up automatically when you connect your G2 to your PC via USB do one of the following: hold down the windows key and hit the Pause/Break key OR click the start button (left lower corner of your screen), then find the word 'Computer' on the right of the start menu. Right click on it and click properties on the sub-menu that pups up. If you did it right you should be at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System". In the left upper corner click on Device Manager. Find the device with the yellow triangle, it should say something like unknown Android device. Double click it and then click update driver. On the GIU that comes up do not select automatic, select browse my computer for driver software. Click browse and navigate to the folder where you saved and unzipped the HTC driver like "C:\Users\username.computername\Downloads\G2_HTC\HTC Driver". Be sure to check the option include subfolders. Click next, follow propts and you are done. You want to be smart about this for future use copy the uzipped driver folder to the SD card of your phone.

You may very well be retarded. You clowns sound like the guys from the HTC forum pertaining to this. Learn how to read. I've helped more people than I could even count with this particular problem, and what's a scamer? You really shouldn't be playing with your cell phone. Actually no, keep it up. HAHA.
"Wisdom", I'm not about to walk a million noob's (no offense, i am one too) through something so easy that they have made difficult for themselves. I'm not on the level of many of the guys on this site to be walking anyone through anything on a forum, though if I had to do it, I'd prefer an audience who would understand my direction. Both of you palsy stricken idiots definitely do not fall into that category, which is probably why you didn't receive my help previously. You can't post a definitive solution to a problem that could arise from a number of different scenarios, and even if you could, I never claimed to be up for it.
Hope you've both learned how to use Windows and your phones.
Guys.... The purpose of this thread is to help people, not alienate them.
Anyway, HTC sync may not be the *best* way to get the drivers on the phone, but it's certainly one of the easiest to explain. All that matters is getting the ndis drivers somewhere windoze will find them.
I said before in this thread that I got better performance using wifi tethering, but that's probably because the usb on my laptop has an attitude problem (adb issues even on a fresh windows install). Best part of that option is that the driver issue is avoided.

im coming from the incredible forums, im running Cyanogenmod 7 RC4, and im pretty sure its the same type of USB/Wifi tethering mechanism. ive searched everywhere, but i cant find the RNDIS drivers anywhere. if you seriously know how to hook up our devices to windows 7 (preferably 64bit lol) without using outside programs like pdanet, please post it here. thank you!

Dude, go to your device manager.
Find the Device with the little ? and then maybe a yellow !.
Right click that device and select Update Driver.
When the window pops up (on Windows 7 32bit), select, Browse My Computer for driver software, then on the next screen, click on the bottom that says, LET ME PICK.
Then it will ask you the device type.
Here you go down to Network Adapters.
Then when it asks you to select manufacturer, skip Microsoft and select Microsoft Corporation.
Then, select Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device.
Hit next, it will say it's not safe, etc etc, proceed to install it.
You should be set. I hope that helps.

[Q] connect desire z to ubuntu via usb

hey there,
i was searching the web and the forum though couldnt find any issues for connecting the desire z via usb to ubuntu (10.04 for me). however, it doesnt work with my DZ. i bought an addition micro-usb-connector (htc) and the phone does only charge and not ask, what kind of connection i want.
once, i read (and experienced) that you have to connect the usb to the back usb-ports (not the front ones) to get it working - that was with my desktop pc. now, using my laptop, the connection (mounting the sd, tethering or whatever) wont work on neither of the laptop's usb-ports...
so maybe there are two questions/issues:
does anyone have similar issues or maybe no problem with connecting the phone to
1) a laptop?
2) ubuntu 10.04?
thanks for your anwsers!
This might be nothing to do with it, but I found that I couldn't use adb with my phone when I was using a third-party USB cable, even though it sync'd (HTC Sync) fine. This was using XP. When I went back to the original HTC cable, adb worked fine.
Hi there,
I have a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and everything works fine here. If i connect my DZ with my laptop a menu appears on the DZ asking if i want to charge only, use as disk drive, HTC sync, USB tethering and internet passthrough. I havent tried HTC sync but the rest works fine. I can even synchronize my music with Rythmbox or Banshee. So what i'm saying is that it should work out of the box.
My DZ is stock European edition, no root or s-off yet.
I suggest you first look in the settings of your DZ and look for "Connect to PC". There you should see the settings for the default connection and a "ask me" option. (My default is charge only and "ask me" is turned on). If this doesn't work maybe you can test your device on another computer to see if the menu does appear when you connect your phone.
Thanks for your replies.

My DZ is also European, standard stock Rom,nothing done (yet). I checked the settings you mentioned and it says "ask me".
Next thing that is really weird: I can enable the tethering option (but cannot use it), yet the connection bypass (or what it is called in English) is greyed out. Tomorrow, I'm going to try the usb cable from the box...
ok, i checked with the original usb cable, still i wont get a connection. as my laptop sits on a docking station, i also tried the back-ports (at the docking station) and un-docked it - no success. none of the three ports will grant me access to the phone.
furthermore, i booted into windows xp and it will show a removable device, but i cannot access it (says something like "enter a device").
it seems to me, that it has something to do with my laptop (lenovo t61) and its usb ports... i have no idea, what to do, so i'm happy about any advice or experience...
Try the guide on adb at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685 , it tells you where to get the Windows drivers.
thanks for the hint, i tried to adb on linux (without success), but going for the windows try...
i'm wondering about, why the phone does not simply give access to the sd-card, like any other removable device. why do i need to install htc sync (including the drivers)? when plugging any removable dev for the first time, it normally just installs the drivers and you'll get access... where is the problem here?

I know what you mean, I would have thought it would "just work" if you connect the phone in "Disk Drive" mode, where the SD card is mounted on the PC.
You're not using a USB hub, right, you've tried connecting straight to your PC's USB ports ?
no, there is no usb-hub used. the connections i tried were always direct ones.
The next thing to do would be to try to connect your phone to another computer. Because it could also be a problem with your phone rather than your usb ports.

I only had a quick look, so a more extensive look may well turn up some useful info. The thread I stumbled across was at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=673501
Ok,i took a look at the link (thanks!), but that deals with ubuntu 7.04. To me, it doesn't seem to be the issue that usb ports are not working, as other usb sticks and my touch pro 2 were recognized without any problems.
Imho,it is like when I connect to the front ports of my desktop, when the connection doesn't work either, so I'll have to live with it. Thanks for your support anyway (I'm still open for new approaches)
BTW: it really bugs me that I can't just plug that device and use it as a mass storage like any other...
i have absolutely no idea why, but now it works... today, when i was charging the phone via usb (the thing, that was working from the beginning), my DZ rebooted spontaneously and afterwards it just showed the missed connection options...
no i just need to figure out how to use the internet-forwarding (dont know the correct translation - what i want is to use the internet from my pc on the phone) ... any clues?

USB tether

How to use USB tether with this damned device? I can't seem to find any drivers to use the USB tether function on my GNEX. On my older HTC I just freaking plugged it in and it worked without any of this bull**** I'm getting now. Any step by step with real links to real drivers? On GSM nexus btw
I'm sorry I have no experienced with HTC phones, but on my GNex, I just plug it in and start USB tethering. I didn't need any drivers (not that I know of, at least). It works on out of the box on Windows and Linux, AFAIK.
EDIT: Oh wait, I think I did download drivers for Windows with this toolkit.

Specific Usb connection problem for my S3

I read a bunch posts on UBS issues but not that solved my problem.
Ok this seemed to start after I installed the ABLDroot tool by chainfire.... but sense then I have tried other roms, and other phones ATM I got a S3 and my S3 hooked into my computer... I going do my best make this easy for you and explain it right.
I have 2 usb ports on my computer which sucks (only having 2) its a labtop. Anyway I have 2 USB DLINK hubs.... one goes into computer and the other goes into the usb hub.. hub1----hub2----computer
hub 1 has nothing in it.....
hun 2 has my S3, S2 and the other hub pluged into it
my computer has 1 usb hub pluged into it and other port is used for my mouse (via a small hub) I do that because its usb mouse and it won't register right on the hubs.... anywaus
Easy problem could this be usb hub? Doesn't seem to be but I can't say I can tell for sure because I need stupid thing to use the phone unless I just except not being able use anything else USB (which arn't connected right now at wern't when the problem started)
This started when installed that ABD tool. Then my computer started saying wrong device error. So I went ahead and installed older drivers which fixed that problem. But the main problem is sometimes when I move stuff on my S3 like if I copy files and stuff I can see they moved on the phone but when I go to the computer and try to find my files there not there. Not moved. Or I see blank folders. Or worse even though I can use file commander still I am unable to see my phones on Cdrive. I see them in devices but not C drive.
sometimes problem goes away sometimes not. what is this ? the older drivers? the abd tool? I can't tell I tried to take one away at a time and while problem would go away often times it still happens once in awhile.... im going try some more tests with the usb plugged strait in but the problem stilll happens ..
Though its better if I don't use the hub thats not good enough for me I want problem gone
I use windows 7 any ideas thanks
only thing I dunno is could having a S2 conected mess with drivers maybe? doesn't seem so.
Any ideas? Different drivers or ... a program or... i dunno man shezzzz
Having the S2 connected shouldn't change anything. Your laptop should see both.
My guess is your USB hub but could also be from the older drivers.
This is a problem specific to your pc (either hardware or software), it's really hard to know exactly what's wrong without being there to test it.
