if the answer to this question is yes EVO here i come - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am on a share plan with my wife i have the main line my contract is not up until Oct. but hers is up now she wants a purple blackberry curve B.S phone which i'm getting off of ebay.My question is can i activate the curve on her line but use her upgrade to get the EVO for me and transfer the phone over to my line?

As long as she is eligible for an upgrade you can get the phone. The contact you have to sign is not for the phone or plan. It just states that you will pay for that line for 2 years or pay the fee. But what ever you can get the Evo for here on her line is what u will have to pay.

Yes. I did that to my wife line. I bought a phone for her in Craigslist and use her upgrade.

I believe BB can do the upgrade for you. Then when you get home call Sprint or hit the net for an ESN swap. Then you'll be fine.

URGENT! Evo Sprint question!

Alright, so due to Sprint's new policy of premiere customers I won't be able to upgrade this june like I normally would(for 1 year upgrdae)
So i decided to buy a clean ESN HTC EVO Shift 4G via eBay.
My plan was to, buy the evo shift, which I did, and sell my evo on ebay.
but now, maybe I'm just paranoid... but will I be able to activate the Shift when I get it in the mail?
How does that work with sprint? would they not let me? hellpp??
thanks!
Yea you will be able to activate it as long as it has a clean esn

phew, okay. Thank you. I wasn't sure...
You can swap out your phone for the evo shift no problem as long as the esn is clean and the phone is not active on another account. I would wait to make sure. Get the shift running before you sell yours.

Not only will sprint let you, they'll even help you. Of course. Why wouldn't they?
You can call them and tell them you bought a Shift and you want to activate it and they'll help you out no trouble at all.
I bought out the remainder of my contract to receive full upgrade early. For me 6 months remaining cost $65 to save $250 on new evo.
Cancel Sprint Contract
So if I cancel my sprint contract and pay the final bill succesfully, including the cancellation charges, I will be able to sell my EVO as having a 'clean' ESN?
The only way you get a bad esn is if you don't pay your bills, and sprint has to shut off your account themselves, or if you report it stolen..if you switch phones through contract, you won't get a bad esn.
Thx for the info. That's what I thought but wanted to make sure I didn't misrepresent myself.

Evo 3d upgrade question

Hey guys. Basically my stepdad has an unused phone upgrade, but does not want to use it.
I would like to own the new HTC EVO 3D.
Can we extend his lines contract, get the phone and then put it on my line?
Also, I understand now that an additional $10 fee is on each smartphone for "data" now. When we signed up only my phone had this fee due to being a 4g phone, the other smartphone including his did not get charged because they signed up and got their phones the month before the change (my stepdad bought his phone online which is why he has an upgrade). Would my plan add a $10 fee to his line?
Any input appreciated. Thanks.
Nope, only the person using the phone has the $10 fee. But make sure sprint knows that you're switching phones and he will not have the Evo3d
Depending on what contract/plan he is on and if your also on that plan. If you are already on that plan and do not have a 'smart' phone, then it will only be the extra $10. However, with it being 'his' upgrade, you will have to have him upgrade 'his' phone and then activate his 'old' phone under you. If you are not on 'his' plan and you are going to add the line, then it will be $20 plus the $10 ($30) additional per month. But I'm pretty sure you can't use his upgrade for a different account. Great, now I'm confused....I think this is right, but a good rep in the store or him calling may be a better option. There are also some sprint guys on here that could answer it better.

I'm not going to lie. This has me confused as well.
We are all on a family plan.
He has a smartphone, I have a smartphone and we both have our own lines. I pay $10 because I had the htc evo, he does not pay the additional $10 currently.
I want to lengthen his contract, get the phone and NOT activate it on his line, instead, take it home and call and have it activated on mine.
If you are doing this anywhere that offers "Instant Rebates" you can get away with this. Just don't activate the phone on his line at all, otherwise he will be stuck with the $10 fee when he re-activates his "smart phone". Either order it online or at a store, just be sure they do not activate it at the store. Once you are home go online and activate it on your line, or via Sprint chat.
Yeah I did it the last year with the evo4g, you will be fine as long as he activates it with his and makes like two calls and then you call sprint to change ESNs, when you change them tell him to make sure they're taking off that $10/month charge. I'm pretty sure he'll never have to pay it but I guess they might have him pay it for one month. I guess you could look at it as a tax for getting a Evo3d
With the instant rebate he shouldnt have to activate it on his line. If he does he is boned. Assuming he had any smartphone that is on the systematically enforced list. There is no override, the system will from then, on force the $10 fee on any applicable smart phone, blackberry, android, wm etc etc. doesn't matter that its not 4g.
Trust me plenty of people have got jacked on this. The only exception is if its a TEP/ warranty replacement. It sucks, but it is what it is now. Co-worker activated her old Sanyo flip for a 3 day camping trip, came home and activated her BB curve again...boned with the $10 fees now. Only way it will go away is if she uses a non smartphone from now on. Soon as she activates any smartphone, the fee is back.

What kind of phone does your dad have? Is it a smartphone. I wonder if they begin implementing the $10 fee if you upgrade your line but keep the same smartphone.
once he upgrade to a new phone he will
Follow up:
You cannot upgrade a line and not activate the phone. I tried at multiple stores and if you purchase it online it activates when you first turn it on upon receiving it.
Anyhow, there is the basic answer if anyone knows a way around let me know
Ok heres what you do upgrade your dads phone to whatever phone you want then activate it like you would regularly do on his line then make like 2 calls then call sprint and ask them to switch each phone to the account you want it on.

Thanks for your input but I think you are missing a critical detail regarding this thread.
My dads phone is grandfathered into no $10 fee for his current smartphone, swapping to any other phone even for an instant will result in the $10 fee on his account for having a smartphone.
Your suggestion includes the idea of activating the upgrade phone on my dads account. I wanted to know if it was possible to upgrade and NOT activate so that he would not be charged $10 on his line AND I would get an upgrade phone. The end of this story is
TO MY KNOWLEDGE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO UPGRADE A LINE AND NOT ACTIVATE THE PHONE AT ALL ON THAT PARTICULAR LINE.
AND
THIS ONLY REALLY MATTERS IF THE LINE BEING UPGRADED IS GRANDFATHERED IN TO NOT PAYING $10 FOR A SMARTPHONE AND THAT PERSON CURRENTLY HAS A SMARTPHONE.
He will only get charged once unless the phone that gets swapped with his upgrade is a smartphone that gets charges the 10$ then he will get charged every month

That's what he's trying to do. Dad has a smartphone and this guy is trying to get the 3d for himself. Activating the 3d on dads line, even for a minute, will trigger the $10 smart phone fee for for dad. Since he said dad already has a smartphone currently.
Some brick and mortar stores will do this, like best buy or radio shack. I bought a phone as a gift using an upgrade and held it for over 2 weeks before activating. Just call in and have them activate it on your line. Should be fine. Even from sprint.com should be ok. Just call in and have them release the phone from that line first, account owner may need to make the call. Then have it activated on your line.
Key is to not power it up until they are activating it to your line. Since if it's tied to his line, it will try to auto activate. When it connects to the network the first time, it will try to activate on whatever line sprint originally programmed it to. That line is changed when you call them in to activate it, after having it released from his line first.

First, I would like to thank you for understanding my thread and posts and posting something that makes sense.
I'd like to mention that I have a 3d now and I just bought it on craigslist. This thread is really just informative at this point as I do not have a problem to solve any longer.
When I went to radio shack I tried to tell them it was "a gift for my dad". They told me that basically they could not give me the phone without activating. The guy there is older and not really very savvy so it could just be that or the policy has changed. How long ago did you do the gift thing?
FYI asurion is out of evo4g now replacing claims with the evo3d so basically $100 to upgrade to evo3d

The last time I did this was last Christmas. But I just spoke to a Sprint rep least week about this. I activated an old flip phone for my son, as he trashed his phone (which is why he won't get a nice phone). The rep was telling me he had an upgrade (which I knew) and I could get myself the iPhone using his upgrade. Plus on Sprint users forum, lots of people bought iPhones and sold them with no issues. Just had to call in and release the phone from their account if anything.

The cancellation fee is now $350. So the total price for you to cancel and get the new phone would be the same as buying the new phone out of contract.
He would pay the cancellation fee associated with his contract; the $350 just went into effect so I doubt that would be his ETF if he's had the photon for 30 days.

Best idea... just buy out the phone on the contract for $200 and then sell it and buy a epic touch for $499. Total cost after selling the phone might be $300-350 but still less than the $499.... You might gain $100-$150 back from selling the photon after paying the $200.
buy it retail, sell photon for $300 and only be out of pocket 200. thats what i would do

Lucky lucky you. There was an administrative fee increase, which voided your contract. You can call in and cancel without ETF. Make sure you tell them you want to transfer your number out.

Effective 9/9/11, the Administrative Charge

I hate it when Sprint reps do this. Be consistent. I was able to cancel my contracts.
I'm also disappointed because yesterday I talked to a chat representative who confirmed with me that I could use my airrave upgrade to get the Epic Touch. He told me to call telesales to place the order. I spoke to a telesales representative and he then confirmed that I could use the upgrade but that I would have to call back today since the Epic Touch came out today. I call and they tell me, sorry, that's not true. I've had this happen to me on multiple occasions. One rep tells me something, and then one rep tells me the complete opposite. It's pretty aggravating.

Why don't you guys quit trying to screw the system and just buy the damn phones.
You can sell any of the current crop of smartphones for 3-400 bucks right now, and then buy whatever you want for full price.
If you don't have the money, upgrade your lemonade stand.

Adding a line to Plan

this may be a little of topic but i have question. i just recently purchased a Nexus s 4g for my sister (fifth teens coming up) i have my main line with my ET4G a second one with a EVO and now i want a third one for the nexus . for some reason sprint is making me sign ANOTHER 2 year contract even though im providing the handset myself. iv googled it and it seems like its a hit or miss sort of thing. anybody ever been in this situation? is there a way to get around having to sign a 2 year contract since i am not going to get another handset at a discounted price? any help much appreciated.
if you provide the equipment you do NOT have to sign a 2 yr.
If they try to make you then tell them they are incorrect. The 2 year contract is to gain the discount to purchase the phone.

Not if you're adding a new line. Getting another phone on an existing line wont affect your contract if you pay full price for it, or you already owned it. But if you're adding a line, you have to sign a contract for that new line.

only in California. but everywhere else, yes, you have to sign the 2 year service agreement. but, you still have eligibility from that day forward, so you can get a phone at a discounted rate. think of it like this: when you add a new discount to your account (employer/organization discount), you sign a new contract without affect eligibility. same goes for $50-100 service credits offered to customers who are 2-4 months from contract end but are not interested in a new phone. eligibility and contract terms are actually 2 separate time-lines. the only reason you sign the contract for a new phone is to guarantee sprint you're going to stay with them, in turn subsidizing the heavy discounting they gave you. (i work in a sprint store )
Even if you sign a contract will there be a ETF if you quit? I thought your etf decreases over time as sprint makes their money back from the subsidy. If they don't have to subsidize you're phone what does that mean? Anyone here know the answer?

Etf still applies. That's just part of the terms, sprint wants you to stay with em. It is prorated though. For feature phones, it goes down by $10/month after 5 months til a minimum of $50. Smartphones prorate by $20/month after 5 months until thy reach $100
This message will self-destruct in 30 seconds.
The etf should be only 200 even though it is an advanced device, since you aren't receiving a discount on an advanced device. If you have a discount on your line the etf starts at 200 anyway.
There have been reports of people activating the evo view tablet month to month with a few callbacks to customer care. Just a matter of getting the right person on the phone. In the store I don't think the software allows us to bypass it.

The GS3 has been out for 3 months?
So your ETF is $350. Then you pay $200 for the Note 2. Overall cost of ETF + device = $550. Then add in the hassle of having to time it in your current billing cycle and dealing with customer support, etc.
I don't know how much it'll cost outright, but it may be close to costing the same. And probably easier.
The buyout program they offered last year is over and they are not currently offering anything similar
Anyone can pay the ETF and terminate their current contract; that doesn't take a special program. But then you have to sign up for a new contract which allows you to get another phone at the subsidized price BUT the kicker is, you lose your original phone number. I followed this up extensively at one point because I was considering going this route as my current line ETF is only $50.
Now if retaining your phone number isn't important to you then this might be a good route to take.

Call and ask them.
Sent from Pluto.
You got to call and ask. Two months ago they allow me the buyout program ($100) but i wanted to wait for the iphone 5. Now they tell me I am not allowed the buyout program. Lol
I'm itching to go to TMobile now.

The G Note is too big. No way will I hold that thing up to my head for a phone call. GS3 is the max size I'll go.

Not if you integrate your sprint number with Google voice.

Another option could be to port your number to a cheapo prepaid then back again. Yeah?

it would be cheaper to just pay for the phone out right

You need 90 days for that to take effect. If you port back in within 90 days with same number Sprint will reinstate your old account.

I would go up to whatever size I could fit in a belt holster. Holding up to my head is not a problem... I use a bluetooth headset almost always... except at home.
