Question about the Sprint plan - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am on Everything Datashare 1500. I will be getting 1 Evo and adding just the $10.00. I have no plans to get the 29.99 tether plan. Also, I DO NOT live in a 4g area, so everything will be 3g. Now on to the questions....
Is the 29.99 plan strictly for "wireless tether"?
Can I tether via usb cable? Is this covered under the 29.99 plan, or is that not needed?
I assume the following based on what I've come across, that I will ONLY have to add the $10.00 plan to the EVO line, that I CAN tether via USB, and that it will have no caps, unlimited??
Just trying to have my ducks in a row before friday.
Thank you.

Wired USB tether is free. 30$ is only for their wireless Hotspot feature.
As far as I know, 3G is capped at 5gb, 4G is unlimited.

29.99 is for wireless tether / hotspot, which you can share to 8 other devices (computers, laptops, xbox, ps3, etc)

Yes, it's a built-in feature, you can tether via MicroUSB cable. Don't need the $29.99 plan.

Keep in mind, you will have the $29.99 plan to try for FREE for one month if you are in the 4G area. Next month, they will start the charge.

If I understand correctly, if you live out of a 4G area, you're capped at 5 gig using 3G? But, I still have to pay the $10? Doesn't sound right to me.

I thought that I read that the $10.00 data charge was for true unlimited?

yes ... correct...
$10 is for unlimited cap.... 3g or 4g
and also puts your data request from EVO on higher priority..so you get your data faster.
if you update to 2.2 android...
i think it has wifi-tether built in for free
USB-tether is free...

Awesome, so USB tether is free! I did not know that. I thought tethering (wired/wireless) is for $30 extra!
This is good news!

cool. thanks for the info guys.

what to expect when upgrading to verizon phone

Im looking at going from an alltel htc touch pro to a Droid Incredible.
It's my understanding, from the sales person, that
#1 I can't keep my old school alltel phone plan that was grandfathered in with the merger
#2 Id have to get a few things differently with my Verizon plan.
Here's a couple things that came up.... Under my alltel plan I was paying $30 for unlimited data, whether straight through the phone or tethered, or broadcasting wifi through an installed cab.
But now im going to have to pay at least one or maybe 2 monthly charges to tether, and my usage is metered and limited to a certian amount of transfer?
Here's the nuts and bolts of the old alltel plan on the touch pro. About 100/mo with 30 of that being the data plan with no limit on useage. Mycircle.. unlimited text, 500 anytime, free mobile to mobile
So what should I expect from "Verizon" if I try to buy a Droid Inc..?
Simple way to avoid tethering fees. Root your incredible, and install wireless tether. Verizon can't detect you're tethering or if they can, they don't whine about it.
Thanks!
I always wanted to try that before but instead paid the 30/mo instead. Fear I guess.
I pay $103 a month, 450 minutes and unlimited everything else, so your cost will be about the same.
When you get the incredible, root it, and install the application wireless tether as said. It is the same thing as the mobile hotspot, you just won't get charged by Verizon for using it to tether.

you can also use PdaNet or EasyTether is you want to to tether via USB..
I just hack my normal 3g tether...
Or you can go into epst and change the thingy from dun.VZW ect to vzw.

I pay $86 a month, 450 minutes and unlimited everything else thatis with a 20 dollar discount
I pay $45 a month for unlimited EVERYTHING at Cricket. Just buy a Dinc somewhere, and use the ROM here at XDA.
Well I pulled the trigger this afternoon and got the Inc.
I kept my old plan.
As she was ringing it up she said a notification popped up that said I would lose my 7pm-7am free calling. Shortly after she was able to add it back on the plan like it always was.
I was surprised with a $50-off during the check-out too! .. and without warning.
It was going to be 249.99+ 100 mail-in rebate+ tax. Ended up being 213 out the door, so I will only end up with 113 in the phone.
It keeps asking to install a system update. Do I keep selecting no and go ahead and root?
Now I just have to get these touch pro contacts into the inc??

Is 4G required for an EVO?

I'm considering buying an EVO from my friend, rather than buying it through Sprint. I currently have the Everything data family pack. My question is, am I able to just activate the phone like I would with any other and keep my same plan without getting 4G? I read that the EVO gets 3G as well so I'm assuming 4G isn't required...
You seem to be a little confused. You only get 4G if its available in your area. You wont have to change plans. You will have to pay an extra $10 a month for the extra data a EVO uses. Sprint has claimed that the $10 isn't a extra for 4G. Its extra because of the amount of data the phone/user uses. Hope this helps sure it raises more questions.

Yes. At first, this upset me too (because before just recently I didn't get 4G). But you get unlimited data with that $10, and when all is said and done, it's still a lot cheaper than other companies unlimited plans. I would HIGHLY recommend this phone
Yes it is required regardless if you have 4G in your area or not.
Cool! Sounds good. I'm coming from the Hero so I'm excited to see how the development goes with the EVO. Thanks!

Yes the $10 is automatic. You cannot just say I want 3G only. You would only have to change plans if you weren't already on the everything data plan.

at&t and VZW are block tethering apps from android market... Will Sprint Also?

http://tech-buzz.net/2011/05/01/att-and-verizon-blocking-tethering-apps-from-the-android-market/
BIG RED (Verizon) and BIG BLUE (ATT) are now banning tethering apps from the android market. Will they also ban it from the amazon market also? And will Sprint follow the leader?
Doesn't really matter if they do or not. Just download the .apk and install it if you want it.
I knew it was a matter of time and of course, Sprint has already been discussing the issue. The part I don't like, is about the cell provider auto adding the plan to your monthly bill when they catch you tethering, which I don't see how they can do if CarrierIQ is removed. Unless they drive around neighborhoods in a van, connecting tether frequencies to your address. Lol

yeah i am currently using stock. I was using midnight but he stopped development so i went to stock for a little bit. I think that we should be able to use our data in anyway we want to. But the carriers see tethering as a gold mine. I say as a compromise how about this data plans....
plan 1: tethering allowed but speed capped at 1megabit...
plan 2: unlimited Thehering Allowed and unlimited data and only $15 more per month speed capped at 3megabit
plan 3: super data plan same as plan 2 but has full wimax speeds and is free if you get the $99 unlimited everything plan.

How about unlimited data plan still means unlimited data? I am already paying an extra $10 a month for.....? I wasn't paying that with the Palm Pre or Instinct. All could get on the web. The only reason I tether is to see the damn websites and use a grown up keyboard. Should not have to pay another $30 a month for that.

The extra $10 is not because of the data at all. The charge is because you have a "smart phone". This would be like when you purchase a car and the state says you have to pay a gas guzzler tax because your car only get 25mpg and not 35mpg. What sprint should do is whay verizon is doing with the $50 prepaid unlimited plan for features phone. Sprint says feature phones prices per month is this and for smart phones they are this....
on the plus side id you are a sprint shareholder then this may help the bottom line by finding ways to charge more for the same services. I think next sprint will increase the fee for tables to $20 as it is an uber device with a screen larger then 4". They can also charge $15 for any smart phone with a 4" or larger screen. And if you phone has a battery that is not environmentally recycled then sprint can also charge you $10 per month for that...

HaHa! Yes if you have a larger screen you must be using larger data. Their first explanation for the $10 was the higher data use with this super phone. Now they just stumble when you call them on that and say it is for having a premium phone....I paid that cost when I bought the phone. It is more like buying a sports car outright and still having to pay the dealer a monthly fee for it being a sports car.
Do you BONSAI?

If you are on AT&T's new mobile data share plans (or if you switch to it) then yes, you can tether for free and it will count against whatever data plan you chose (or choose) with mobile share. I switched my phones over on Thursday. I have a S3, and an iPhone 4s. We went with the 6 gig plan. All plans come with unlimited talk and text to any number, as well as wireless hotspot and tethering (wifi and USB), with no additional setup fees.
Both my phones share the 6 gigs and those gigs can be used however I choose.

... you DO know that tethering on an unlimited plan also runs the risk of being FORCED onto a different plan, correct?
AT&T seems to be REALLY good at knowing when your tethering. I never had the "unlimited" plan on AT&T to begin with (but realistically, it really isnt unlimited anymore anyways), so I was very happy to see the new mobile share plans that allow me to use my tethering as part of the data I'm already paying them for every month.

I used to tether on my old phone (iPhone) with ATT and one day I got a text saying basically to stop tethering or they would put me into a capped data plan. I continued tethering until I got another text saying they were moving me into a data plan. I called ATT and was polite and played dumb, the girl said she would remove that "flag" from my account since I called. I stopped tethering at that point. Now I just want to see if it can be done on my S3, I will prolly just go with a data plan at some point and tether properly with ATT
How do they monitor that?

Easy. Tethering forces additional hop. Also data usage when on another tethered device has different characteristics vs. data usage on the device.

Unlimited data plan offer

Has anyone else recently had an offer for unlimited data from verizon? I just got that offer today and it's about 30 dollars cheaper than what I'm currently paying. Is this one of those to good to be true deals? From what I've been able to find out, it looks like it's 10gb of tethered 4g data and then switches to 3g and 22gb of data and then switches to 3g. Am I missing something? Does anyone know anything more about it? Is what I read online correct? I can't seem to find anything official from verizon regarding the fine print.

I work for VZW. It's legit, it's real unlimited with 10gb of tethering at 4g speeds and then deprioritization after 22gb of mobile use. Meaning that if you hit 22gb and are connected to a congested tower, you might be slowed down a bit as other users who don't use as much data will be pushed to the front of the line, so to speak. If you're on a tower that isn't congested, you won't experience any slowdowns. Hope that helps.
Are you in a grandfathered unlimited plan? If so, what you have is true unlimited where this plan offering is throttled after 22gb.

I still have the true unlimited plan, it's an altell plan from 15 years or more ago. But my kids and wife don't. I wonder if this would be good for me. But I make them piggy back off my WiFi tether when we go anywhere. And always stay on WiFi. I wish it was 22g per line, instead of the account.

Grandfathered true unlimited is true unlimited per fcc rules. As for having them tether I'm not sure Verizon's stance.
That said, the new plan you will be throttled and can be because it is written as such.
Just keep that in mind.
I just compared my current plan to the Unlimited Plan. I could change and it would be the same price, BUT, not really, because I would lose the Employer discount my wife gets.
