And because you had to ask where it was, it definitely means you shouldn't be installing it.

What is 2.2?
2.2 is the android OS that comes after 2.1. It is canonically known as Froyo, which is a type of frozen yogurt that is extremely tasty. It has lots of cool new features such as stock JIT, tethering, hotspot capabilities, etc. Due to Sprint's restrictions and HTC's crummy UI "upgrade" known as sense, I doubt we will ever see any of these features included in an official ROM. Actually, on this point, I guess HTC would rewrite sense so it works with JIT? Anyone know something about how this would work.
When will we get 2.2 on our Evo's
Based on sprint/HTC's update cycle for the Hero, I calculate we will see an official 2.2 update for the Evo five minutes before the universe collapses of heat death.

We all very much doubt that. HTC aren't exactly the most punctual or timely in their updates.
Shame really, they make great phones but just set them aside and forget about them after two months.
I hop that we will get it thanks
My bet is September/October 2010 or never.

Fate of HERO is the worst nightmare we can imagine.
HTC has just recently launch a software upgrade to 1.21.405.2.
I highly doubt there will be another update to Froyo 2.2 in 3 weeks time. (23rd June according to the rumour)
Once the source for Froyo is out, there will surely be a better port of Froyo for the HTC Desire.
sad
sad that htc is the only one who can port fm radio to desire, i dont think this community will be able to port fm radio to froyo, cause froyo dont support fm radio hardware.

Froyo ports for Desire are getting better each day.
Sense UI will be gone but with new features of Froyo it's acceptable loss.

I was thiking like you but since i have ADW Launcher I don't miss Sense.
Anyway. Had my HTC Touch 3g (magic) on April 2009 with 1.5 and we had our 1.6 update on ¿Septembre? So I think that we will have to wiull till September or MAybe October to enjoy our officil froyo update. The 23th of June thing may be a joke or something. I'm quite sure that we won't have 2.2 before Nexus and we don't even know when, froyo in nexus, are gonna be officiallly launched.
I'm sorry, my English sucks.
I think when Flash 10.1 finally comes out of beta, we can expect the first Froyo updates to surface.
It's a key part of the new OS, I don't think the beta version could be part of the final shipped rom..

Flash is not part of FroYo.
This is how Google are planning to defragment Android. All that FroYo contains is support for Flash 10.1, it does not matter if Flash is still in Beta as technically it's only just a plugin for the OS as it is for Windows/Mac/Linux.
I am waiting Froyo Official HTC update too...

no need to be negative. keep opinions like that to yourself.
Engadget just released HTC's forthcoming plans for Froyo updates, and Froyo will not be appearing on the desire, due to non compatible hardware relating to the wifi. HTC have said if you want FroyO, burn your phone and prey, then it will reappear, magicly with Froyo, and a ice cream
Mods do the honours please and kill this thread. Or move it to the general, where it should have been posted in the first place

Oh yeah sorry you're right, this issue isn't discussed anywhere already
People should learn to use the search function. I haven't been on this particular forum for very long but it seems quite a lot of people just barge in here without paying ANY attention to how a forum should be used (in everyone's interest)

Froyo

Why can't we have Froyo yet already???? What's the hold up? By the time, we get it... 3.0 will be around the corner...

you are lucky you didnt own a Hero then. It was outdated they day i got it(two days before launch). it came with 1.5 i believe, 1.6 was already out and 2.0 was announced a few weeks later w/ the DROID. THEN 2.1 one came out and Hero owners were STILL waiting. finally 2.2 was announced and a week or so later they pushed 2.1 to Sprint Heros.
long story short, dont expect it to come out anytime soon with HTC's track record. i would recommend rooting and installing cm6, it runs great sans 4G

HTC has announced 2.2 will roll out by December. If you want it that bad, i suggest trying out CyanogenMod. I never had 4G coverage around me, but after playing around with it, i would never go back to a Sense-based 2.1 ROM.

Cyanogen's mod, while amazingly awesome, has problems. There are missing features, inconsistencies between what works and what doesnt from user to user, and it's AOSP.
HTC has to make EVERYTHING work for EVERYONE all the while porting over their sense UI. All of their apps and widgets need to work on Froyo. It needs to be stable. This sort of thing realistically can take months to perfect. So don't be butthurt when you don't get it til Christmas.
I personally can't stand Sense... or any other UI put on top of android. But as long as I can root and boot up custom roms, I'm a happy camper.
uhh isn't google suppose to be the one releasing froyo since they are the makers of android os not htc? i thought htc was just the hardware
google only releases it for nexus one
they then release froyo source then hardware makers like htc and motorola use the source along to build their versions with either sense or blur
Now I can see how so many people are confused.
This isn't a simple phone, it is complex and there are many hands in the cookie jar. Please do some research about your phone, and who makes what, and you will realize it is far more complicated than "Froyo is out, how come my phone doesn't have it."
I'm very happy with the Froyo I already have. I see 4G as a totally useless feature due to its extreme battery drainage.

Then thinking you can come into a development forum and post a question that should be common knowledge to anyone tinkering at all in Android is just lazy.
If you switch phones every two months, then what do you care about Froyo, or even learning what your phone can do anyway...
When I make a purchase, I find out what I am buying, if it suits my needs, what limitations it has, what support it has etc. I call that making an "informed" decision.
I don't just walk into the story and buy the pretty one without knowing the above. Or else I would have an iPhone and wouldn't care about what I can do with it.
This was a lazy question posted by someone that hasn't done any reading about their phone or they would see what has to be done to get an Official Froyo build.
basically,
Froyo (aka: Android 2.2) has been released by it's maker. it's maker is Google. HTC gets licensing to install the OS on it's phones. now, when HTC first started working with Android...android was..well...it was lacking...it was lacking a fair bit. so the HTC devs put some 'Sense' onto android to make it something that the nerds can bring to their corporate executives. (cause if we nerds can't sell the boss on how cool this is...then i don't get to play it.) meanwhile, Google is trying to turn Android into a serious market contender. and its going up against some very mature code. this has a side effect of causing Google to release v1.5, v1.6, v2.1 and v2.2 rather close to each other. this is not a sustainable pace of release...it will piss everyone off. thankfully Froyo supposedly will be able to bridge us over until v3.0. at which point google has said they will proceed with a much slower version relase of Android.
Sense is not needed like it used to be. however, it'll prolly be around for a while. htc has said they will release froyo onto the evo but that is not a priority for them...the evo is yesterdays product so its more important getting the upcoming devices ready for market. perhaps the HTC/Sprint sanctioned Android 2.2 will be released by the end of the 4th quarter (or so they say).
on the good note...CM6 is rather nice. even without having 4G running yet. but really, how often do need to turn on the 4G radio? and they will get it working before long.
i must also agree w/ Bielinsk on this one....

Check out Avalaunchmods Froyo ROM with Sense. He released an RC for it today and hopes to have a couple of little issues fixed tonight. He has a Sense and no-Sense ROM available. He's put a lot of work into them and i'll be checking out the Sense ROM for sure tonight. Probably bounce back and forth between the CM6 that i'm using now and Ava's Sense ROM.

maybe because all the phones i buy are android os...and you really have way too much time on you're hand to flame someone over such a little thing...all i asked was "isn't froyo suppose to be released by google and not htc" if you don't wana answer it then leave it alone...noone wants to hear your history crap...Noone wants to know how you read every nutrient fact before buying milk or read every little thing that's on the charging adapter...maybe you have time all the time in the world to do that and all the power to you but not everyone is like...we actually have a life and don't learn the history of every little thing we purchase...and fyi forums are made to ask questions and to inform each other...so if you don't like someones question instead of flaming simply don't read it and move on.

Gingerbread 3.0 question.

I'm very pleased with froyo 2.2. And I know this is a hard question to answer but do you think gingerbread 3.0 will be a huge update with lots of new features and improvements or will it just a have a few updates like froyo.
It's gonna be huge... one of the biggest things the world has ever seen.
No, seriously... who should know how it's gonna be, when there aren't any information out yet.

I meant your opinions.
As the name 3.0 says, you can assume that there will be major changes.
My opinion is that 3.0 will be a small update and only bring a couple of new features. Seeing as froyo only has a few new features and it took a while after 2.1 to be released. 3.0 is released by the end of the year. How could they possibly make a huge difference in a short period of time?
I'm hoping I'm wrong as I read somewhere Google said that the update will be that good we won't need HTC sense. Hope that's true.

when android version 3.0 is release is signals a massive change in the os, google have decided to make 2 branches of android there will be the android 2.X branch for low to mid end devices and the 3.X branch for top end devices and android tablets, its also going to be alot better looking, the whole android ui is getting a revamp

They've probably been working on Gingerbread since before they finished Froyo, and the fact that it's called 3.0 instead of 2.3 is significant.

Do we really need it now? The only reason I'm using a Sense ROM at the moment is so that the FM Radio works. If it weren't for that I'd be using a vanilla ROM.

Without sense widgets I would be lost. I use most of them and the market alternatives just don't do it for me. I suppose it al depends on what the user needs.
Gingerbread
I wonder if Desire will still be defined as a high end device by the end of the year. Would hate if I had to get a new phone to experience 3.0!
Crossing my fingers for legen-dary performance!
I would love to get better update system. Where google would be pushing os updates while htc, mto, se and so on would push their ui + their software updates only. Therefore there would be no fragmentation of the os.

keyboard Lights on CM6

Mot really a question per se, I am running CM6 on my slide, and do not see a great speed increase from the bloated Espresso Sense UI.....ant thoughts?
And for my original statement...does anyone think we will ever see function and shift lights on a modded slide? I know I dont NEED them, but it is original equipment on the phone, so I was just wondering

Not really a question? I see two.
You should definitely see a speed increase on CM6 related mods. At least the one's presented here on this site are blazing fast.
Which ROM do you have? Do you have dumfuq's Kernel?
Download SetCPU here located on the site in-case you don't have it and let it configure your speed and how much you can overclock. Also, any app that kills tasks will greatly increase your speed.
To answer the other, I don't see why lights wouldn't be fixed in the future.
lol, not really a question per se, but how much droid would an android droid if an android could droid droids?

I highly doubt a task killer would do you any good if you're looking for speed increases, if you're unhappy with the way your device is performing and think you can get a better deal by returning to stock then by all means do so.
I'd imagine the keyboard indicator lights are going to be fixed in the future but there are other issues that are taking priority over the lights such as BT functionality, Market issues, etc.

wow.. -_______________________- also questions belong in Q&A you know where people go fro questions an answers, not in development
i know what you mean by the speed. I too wasnt happy with the initial cm6 release or myfroyo6 and went back to stock cuz it was faster. couple weeks later when there was a re-release of cm6, i re-rooted and flashed it as well as dumfuq's oc kernal. cm6 and any other rom really doesnt run faster that stock, but flash that kernal and it will be WAY faster than stock. Stock and normal cm6 only ran like 1.5 mflpos but with the 844 oc kernal i get >9 mflops. 844 is a bit unstable and may not reboot properly the first time (or second lol), but i use it daily and am very happy. 806 is very stable and you still get good performance.
The problem is....THe SLide is S0 Fass ThAt It bEe BLaZiN ThRu em r0mz, s0 iTs Be kILLin BLowin ya's mInds.
I agree about froyo. None of them are any faster than stock. Yes froyo is faster according to linpack and quadrant.
The fastest and smoothest Rom that has been released is aria2slide.

I agree with this statement 110%. I've been running CM6 for a few very specific reasons and haven't been impressed so far. People keep SAYING it's faster due to Linpack, etc, but until you truly understand how programs (Java, in particular) operate - including optimizations and more - then I don't think people should trust a CPU benchmark. Even beyond hardware there are many things in software that can impact what the user perceives as "fast" and "reliable" versus what the CPU thinks.
If ANYONE in the CM6 crowd should be excited about something, it is the features of Froyo, NOT the speed. I'm likely to go back to stock and use your (sultan.of.swing's) JIT hacks.

It's frustrating when people like you come in without adding anything (I doubt you've created a rom that you've shared with the community), only taking. Then complaining at that.
Also not adhering to the forum rules. These questions should be posted either:

.... I don't think he was complaining.. he merely said he doesn't see a speed difference between bloat ware and cm6 and asked for the thoughts of anyone else. Not once did he bash the cm6 rom for being slow in his opinion, he asked a question. And also he wanted to know if the lights would ever work he never said " why don't they or cm6 rom is ****ty for not having it implemented" he asked will we ever see it. Granted this could have been put in the Q and A but it still helped me being in this section, thanks to the feedback from others towards his question I learned something new. I didn't know you had to make a rom in order to be a contributor to the community lol

It's not in the framework?? Whatever it is, it's in the sytem image somewhere. Someone smarter thatn me should do it.
To the poster that said "Why, we'll have 2.3 roms soon" (paraphrasing):
I would like at least this small porrtion of gingerbread on my totally/completely stable/fast Myn rom now. i doubt that the first, even the 2nd or 3rd phase of community built releases will be perfect. But if given just this one feature, I'd be happy. It's not like you can take advantage of new Android features in 2.3 with the evo anyway: we don't have a gyroscope, we don't have a NFC radio.
That said, of course I'd love a full gingerbread release for the evo, but beggars can't be choosers.

Yes and no. It could be a proprietary Samsung thing. Then it wouldn't be in the SDK, but rather in the Nexus S image. Now, seeing as it's supposedly a Google Experience phone, there shouldn't be proprietary things on it... so that would lead me to believe it is in the framework somewhere.
Regardless of where it is, i want it too, lol

I might be wrong, but If the EVO officially gets Gingerbread or even if its ported over.... I the gyroscope is in the and part of the new OS itself and not hardware. Like I said, I could be totally wrong, But think about it, If the EVO Gets Gingerbread then we'd lose out on the new gyroscope feature?? Just doesn't seem right lol
Think about it

Nope the gyroscope just like NFC is a hardware thing so there is no way for us evo users to get it without some insane hardware modding.
