How to Qik video chat - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a couple EVO 4Gs and don't know how to video chat between them. How can I use Qik to video chat? All I see is the option to stream to the website.

That's strange... I thought all the reviews showed people using qik video chat? I can't find anything on the evo that allows voice calling. I thought or would be some native video dial support, like phones in Japan have done for five plus years.

i cant get mine to let me sign into qik keeps telling me im not connected to network..on 3g and wifi

fring connected to skype works like a champ. i haven't used qik, because i don't know anyone on it. i do, however, have several friends on skype, and by proxy, fring.
not the same as a desktop, but still good. hope that helps!

I was.receiving an error when.trying to sign in as well but after a while got fixed on its own. To video chat I downloaded the new version from Market then rebooted. I went to the qik website and entered my phone number then I activated by clicking on the link of the sms message it sent. When all that is done you go to qik and click on "Video Chat".

They released an update to quo this afternoon

The update for qik showed up on my hero this morning - you know you have it if you have a blue icon instead of orange. It has not yet shown up as available on my evo and according to qik there is some issue that they are working on. Lots of people can't see it.

Also, you don't need skype with fring, fring supports video chat natively with other fring users

I still cant access it, nor can I update. Am I missing something?

It seems they pulled the update because on my wifes evo I can no longer see it in Market. I have downloaded Fring but the call keeps on getting dropped and I am in a full bar 3G zone.

I had hte same problem. you have to go offline in your other QIK (that comes with the phone) then you can log into the new version of QIK (and go online there)

Skype

What options do I have for Skype on my desire? I want to do the obvious calls but SMS would be good too.
There is a 'skype beta lite' app that you can google and although it is clean I could'nt get it to take my number in the UK.
I've found the skype in the 'Fring' app to do it the best so far.
Nimbuzz should have it as well, I think. And the tests which I read (androidpit dot de - German only) said that Fring is clearly inferior to Nimbuzz.
another nimbuzz vote here
Will try nimbuzz as fring is useless for me, it diesn't let you add contacts on the fly and I can't even make calls because the speaker shuts off!
Let me know how you get on with Nimbuzz. I tried Fring and the call quality was poor, with a audio delay on top of it.
Installed and tried Nimbuzz. Sound quality is better than on Fring.
BTW: anybody knows if and how you can delete a fring account?
Traffic?
Does anyone have an idea about the amount of bandwidth/traffic skype uses? Like for one minute? I'm on a 200MB per month plan...

I don't think you can even change your password on fring!
Can you send SMS with Nimbuzz or even add new Skype contacts?
yes u can add contacts for any IM account; skype, msn, etc

GREAT! Sounds so much better then fring!
Nimbuzz seems to give my Desire problems ... keeps going slow, random reboot, never happened before, uninstalled and all is fine ... also it never seemed to work anyway!
strange. work fine here even prior to the latest update.
Nimbuzz working perfectly for all things and Skype now. For some reason though it finds it quite hard to connect sometimes, especially on a low connection where Fring seems to work either way.
Quite annoying on Nimbuzz where if Skype (or any of the accounts) does not connect first time there is no option to retry just delete the account.
Did you try Fring?

I noticed that too. also noticed my battery was draining alot quicker than usual - even after exiting the application.
And sometimes even when the app isnt running, I get an error message saying it's crashed and needs to be closed. This happens mainly when ever i turn wifi on/off.
anyone know an app that does group chat on skype?

I don't use wi-fi but had generally the same issues. It brought my phone in some cases to a halt!
Is there any "Skype" app or other app that can be used to use Skype account for calling non-skype landlines / mobile phones ?
Paid calls using Skype credits ... via Android.
I tried Nimbuzz, but it cant ... yes, Nimbuzz is not Skype client, this is obvious.
My only hope is "NimbuzzOut":
http://www.nimbuzz.com/en/nimbuzzout
But then again, there is no Android client still
Yes, Fring on Android can use Skypeout, so skype credits or any other SIP like voicebuster.
Haven't personally checked it but a friend tried it already and it works

webcam with someone on msn?

is it possible with this phone? i webcame on my pc thru msn quite often and was curious.. i'm sure this phone is capable of doing exactly that (evo - msn webcam chat) but i'm not a dev so i can't really say.. this would be amazing if sum1 cud figure this out.

As said above, use Fring. It is a very nice app, and you can just sign onto msn and you should be able to video chat that way, though I haven't tested it yet.

My one attempt at video chatting with msn didn't work. It said something like "msn live doesn't support video chat". The other user had the latest msn, so it's not related to msn.
Although I was able to text chat, I didn't try the voice chat.
Maybe try a older version of msn? I dunno, I don't see why it shouldnt work, but msn was never great with video chat, as different versions could mess it all up and make it not work, it was hard to get both sides working well, I have had so many problems throughout the years with msn.
meh, i had the same issue... i also tried aim n same error came up. i really want to get this working. for example my mom is at home on her computer with a webcam on msn and im at work with my phone and we can connect to one another n just video chat. hope u guys knew what i meant although it did seem that way, i guess i just wanted to make sure.
tell that person to just download skype and make a username.
Yeah pretty sure fring only works with fring and skype, not msn or anything else.
yeah have each of you make a skype account, easiest way if msn doesn't work.

Alternative to Qik

Anyone used a good alternative to Qik?
I have been using it to upload videos to facebook, but the quality is crap.
Anyone?
Fring

yeah fring is the best so far. only 2 i know of. Id love to be able to vid chat with people on gtalk.
well if you are uploading videos to facebook and you want the best quality then just shoot with the regular camera and upload your videos to your youtube account, then just share them via facebook. if you use 4g you dont have to wait till your in a wifi area to upload you can do it immediately after your done shooting
From what I gather, gtalk doesn't handle video chatting, or at least that is what fring app keeps telling me when I try to connect to someone on gtalk. Fring does connect to other networks like aim, icq, and skype but I don't know which are best for other people including people at their computers to use to video chat with?

gtalk only handles video chat within the gmail browser client(why idk)
I tried connecting with gtalk like that but also wouldn't connect. Then I also tried the yahoo messenger and fring wouldn't video chat with that either. Very annoying that I can only text to these networks. This evo needs some more developing when it comes to video chatting.

I really ONLY use Qik for when I want to straight upload a video to facebook, I have no use for video chatting as of yet. It just sucks because of the incredible compression that Qik applies. I guess that I can always do as you suggested and upload to Youtube then post from there to Facebook, though that is an extra step. I wonder if there is an option on Youtube to post directly to Facebook.....

Is there a way to do Skype video chat on our Evos?

I travel and would like to chat with the family when we are apart. Is there a way to do direct video chats on our phone. Qik isn't the answer unless someone else has a Evo...correct?
Try Fring. It's in the market.
Fring removed Skype support around a week a ago. From what I have read, we are without Skype video chat until Skype releases an official app for Evo (which they have said is coming).
Are there any apps for video chat?
You can do video chat fring to fring (not the skype service). Tell your friends to install the fring desktop application and you should be good to.
You can also do android to iphone via fring to fring.
EDIT
nevermind, they don't have a desktop client. sorry

Ack!!! I didn't know that. Guess we now know at least how long it's been since I last used Fring...
sipdroid app
sipdroid now has video chat...seems to be great quality...i can call over data or wifi and call for free, but the tutorial (sipdroid wiki and video) uses pbxes (pbxes.org) and i think for video calls you must pay a premium fee of some sort. this would enable evo to desktop. however, evo to evo is free and quality should be much better than fring to fring.
You wont see skype for evo until verizons contract with skype runs out

I think it ends in 2011 :-\
I thought Skype said they were releasing Skype for Android globally and be a "leader" with mobile VoIP/Video-chat "before the end of the year" or something?
Yeah man what the F! I wanna actually USE my front facing camera someday. Shhheesh.
Fring may not have a desktop client, but i'm pretty sure qik does... so, actually, qik is kind of the solution for the time being.
i think their computer client is called qik-in-touch or something...

QIK and Battery drain???

Im running the latest version of QIK for the EVO. In doing some reading I have read that leaving QIK running drains the battery faster then having it not run. HOWEVER when I click SIGN OFF, I get a message "Signing off will remove your QIK data from this phone" .. what does that mean?? when I sign back in, will it put my linked contacts back??
Is this program actually a battery drainer??
Thanks...
I'm not sure about the sign off issue, but I tried installing the very newest version of Qik, and it drained my battery like no other app. Not even close either. And I knew it was the app because I changed nothing other than installing the app, and I was losing closer to 15-20% an hour.
are you sure? I havent seen anyone else report this...
I seem to be having some very poor battery life myself. The only thing I can think of is that recently (days) ago, I installed the Qik app to try it since a friend of mine just purchased on Evo. I've just uninstalled it to test this theory.
I'm glad to see it wasn't just me. I fail to see why qik needs to have a background task when it isn't running - it has no reason to notify me about anything. I uninstalled it and my phone is back to making it through the day.
I wouldn't be surprised. I used to have Fring (another video chat app) installed on my phone and that was a battery drainer. I'm guessing these video chat apps have to stay open and 'listen' for a potential incoming call or video chat session.

Sounds about right. Can't receive a phone call if the phone isn't on, right?
Anyways...
The reason it's a battery drainer is because not only does it have your screen on constantly, but it's also using the front facing/rear facing camera, recording video, up streaming the recorded video, and down streaming video. That's when you're using it. When you're not, it runs in the background for potential video calls, like stated above. It's using your data almost constantly; sending and receiving small packets that tell it "No requests yet!"
As for the data loss, what it's saying is that when you sign out, you're signing out. Your User ID and Password is no longer saved, and from what it says, you're videos and general user data will be erased from the phone. However, all of the videos you've taken are saved on their website, and is accessible from their app once you sign back in. If you choose to sign back in, the app will read your contacts like it did before.
I have Qik installed, and my battery is unaffected. I just sign out when I close it that way it won't run in the background. If all else fails, you can always just manually end the process using .Free Advanced TaskManager. It's available in the market place, and is a huge help. I love it. Look for the Icon with a blue phone inside a blue gear. There are several apps with similar names, and it may not show up as the first one.
