What's on the original SD card? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I formatted my SD card because I thought the only thing on there necessary was sample music and photos. I realized that I had also at least seen HTC Sync. Am I missing anything else?
I downloaded 2.0.33 of HTC Sync, is this the version that it comes with? I haven't tried it yet to see if it works because I haven't been on my other computer that has all my outlook contacts that I need to sync.

Nothing on the SD card is truly necessary for function of your phone. There are also a few folders that the HTC apps make by default (I remember the "footprints" folder), but again, nothing is truly necessary. You won't be missing out on anything!

I have a similar problem. When I boot my PC (Windows 7 x64) everything is OK, and HTC Sync works like expected. But when my PC goes to sleep and then wakes up, I cannot connect again. It also happens when I several times disconnect HTC Desire from USB cable.
I also have problem with contacts synchronization with my Google App account. No contacts are synchronized at all.

I spent quite a while mucking around trying to find out why my contacts would not synchronize with my Google account.
Check what type your contacts are on your phone. Are they SIM contacts, Phone contacts or Google contacts?
On my phone, I had everything as Phone contacts. I discovered that only Google contacts will synchronize with your Google account. But all is not lost. You won't have to type in all your contact details again.
What you do is to create Google contacts that duplicate each of your phone contacts. Just create each Google contact on your phone as an empty contact (i.e. no details) with the same name as each existing phone contact. When you see them in your contacts list, they will appear as two contacts at this stage.
Then edit either one of the two contacts. You can link each contact with another contact. If you've use the same name for your Phone and Google contacts it will already be suggesting that these can be linked together. Do so.
You will find your two contacts now appear as one in your contact list. And these linked contacts will now synchronize with your Google account contacts and carry all the details from your original Phone contact with it.
Hope this helps.
i've got by htc desire synching w/ work exchange account and googlemail contacts (ie no data on phone itself). when connected to facebook, it would only synch about 5 of the googlemail contacts, although exchange seemed to be fine.
i cleared out all the data, deleting the synch accounts and tried again. all contacts were downloaded, until... i resynched w/ facebook which removed all the googlemail contact except the same 5 or so.
i'm guessing there's some kind of data conflict, but any idea how to fix it? i kinda like having my contacts hooked up with their facebook profiles, so a fix would be good.
cheers

i have the same problem.
i have installed the HTC Sync from SD card, uninstalled ActiveSync, installed driver and so on. HTC device is recognised in Windows XP x86, HTC Sync starts on Desire, but ends up with Synchronization status: Disconnected.
It's a serious issue for me, as i have used the Outlook Calendar synchronization daily in my office.
Curiously it synchronizes the Contacts well with my Windows7 x64 at home.
Hi,
there is a "Workaround for HTC Hero Sync Problem in Windows 7" which should also work for the Desire.
As I am new user I am not allowed to post links. So google what I have set into inverted commas and it should be the first result from mydigitallife.
Cheers

the Sync works in W7.
the Sync doesn't work in XP.
Phone Monitor recognizes the Desire in XP.
HTC Sync doesn't start sync wizard and says "Disconnected".
USB Debugging is turned "on" in Desire menu.
"Disk drive" option in HTC Sync 2.0.18 menu on Desire works well.
Phone is mounted as:
"Mass Storage Device" in Device Manager->USB Device Contrololers (driver version 5.1.2600.0 from Microsoft)
"MyHTC" in Device Manager->Android USB Devices (driver version 2.0.7.1 from HTC)
"HTC Android Phone USB Device" in Device Manager-> Disk Drives (driver version 5.1.2535.0 from Microsoft)
when choosing HTC Sync in desire after connecting the phone, it's installed and mounted as external drive.
Does anyone have a link where I can download the HTC Sync that comes on the SD card, I put it my own card when I received the phone so never checked the SD card for anything.

HTC sync probelms and how to disassociate my desire

Hi people.
I have only recently just had problems with my Desire/HTC Sync/Outlook..
My contacts have doubled up on my pc, my calendar has tripled up on my phone and doubled up on my pc..
I've uninstalled htc sync 3 tried htc sync 2 and it just has made it worse each time..
So essentially, I want to
1) Disassociate my desire from my pc..
2) Make everything correct on my pc/outlook (which will be easy)
3) Delete all contacts/calendar info from my phone.
4) Resync my pc ONTO my desire. without accidentally syncing the wrong way.
How can this be done?
Any info appreciated..
Thanks in advance
any help would be appreciated
You might try uninstalling htc sync and also wiping any folders and registry keys mabe by it.
Remove desire's drivers too. That way it should be totally disassociated.
Then fix your data on the desire and try installing a fresh htc sync 3 and resync from phone.
I've never used sync, thus I'm not certain this will work .

One of the big advantages to have a Google Android phone over a non smart phone was the built in feature of contact sync between the device and the Google "cloud" for each Google account on the device.
I've always used this contact sync feature and it has provided peace of mind knowing my contacts are also backed up in the cloud where I can access them online, download them, edit or save them without having access to my device.
Also, as I move between Android devices, all I do is login with my Google account and the device loads my most recent version of the contacts and then continues to keep them in sync.
I do know Android stores the contacts in a .db file under the /data partition and this could be pulled from a device as a rough backup/restore method. I don't recall having heard of anybody saving their contacts to the 'sd card'. I'm not really sure the benefit to this. The contacts .db file for Android is an sqlite database, as all other .db files on Android are, and there are programs out there to import/export contacts to/from these sqlite .db files.
What type of contacts file are you referring to? .db ? Could you post up the name of the exact file? What application did you use to create the contacts on your sdcard?
The more detailed the information the better the reply.
Hope that helps and I didnt miss the mark!

Contact Sync Help

My sister has a business and she uses her EVO as a business phone, she has around 7,000 contacts saved in the phone, The problem is now that it is messing up the phones memory taking 218 MB of Space. I understand How to Import/Export contacts to gmail via .VCF file but the contacts are just copied and put on the gmail account and remain on the phone. When I go to settings, Accounts and sync. I tap the sync button but nothing really happens and the date remains the same. I dont know how to remove the contacts from the phones memory and keep them only on gmail. Im afraid if I start randomly deleting I may lose 7,000+ contacts and You guys would be reading my obituary. What do you recommend I do? Thanks!
Some brief googling, it woud seem you have to manually add them one by one into gmail via a computer (Easiest method of this mundane method, irony?) and then sync your contacts to the phone via your google account. This way when you switch phone just add google account and BAM, all contacts. I'll look for an easier way.

Further googling, I found this. Idk if you've tried this, seeing as you mentioned VCF, but give this a whirl.
First you will want to transfer your old contacts off your phone
To export contacts to an SD card:
SDcard must be inserted and "mounted".
From the home screen, touch Contacts
Touch the Menu Key, press More
Touch Import/Export
Touch Export to SD card
Handset will confirm VCF filename.
Contacts will be located in the root directory on your sdcard as a .vcf file.
Now, plug your phone into your computer, and mount it as a disk drive. Next you need to import these contacts to Google Contacts
https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=14024
Also, verify in gmail that the contacts are indeed there. IF in fact they are all indeed there, it is safe to delete them as they will be in google. I think that even though they are backed up, since they are on the phone already, gmail wont sync twice.... But I've always synced to gmail instead of phone so, I wouldn't really know much on the subject. Sorry, Hope this helps though

You got it, back up online through gmail and save the file to a conputer, that is 2 safe places.
Done, move on.

Sync Device Contacts To Google?

New question: How do I sync contacts stored on the device to Google? When creating a brand new contact on the phone it asks where you want to save it, but for contacts that are imported via Bluetooth you have no choice as to where they are saved. Thus, I have contacts on the device I want uploaded to Google and can't figure out how to do that.
--Original Post--
Ok, this is a silly question. I have a second S4 which is for work. I have a gmail account specifically for that device (Google Apps corporate stuff as seen HERE), it syncs with my office outlook, etc. That said, I have a number of contacts on my personal S4 which I had been using until I got the company S4 which I want to now send to the work S4 so I can delete them from my personal S4.
Now then, what I want to happen is to be able to send the contact, have it upload to Google, and be done (thus also syncing with my Outlook in my office, etc). What I tried was to open contacts, menu/import/export/share namecard via/Bluetooth and sent them via Bluetooth. That worked, they show up in my contact list just fine, and they are stored on the device. Problem is, they don't seem to upload to Google.
Once (if?) they do, I want to be able to delete them from the device so they are ONLY stored on Google. Will deleting them from the device also delete them from Google again? How would I resolve this conflict if so? I don't want to sit and manually type all these contacts out into Google via web browser (or the phone) to have them sync down to the phone. One would think there would be another way...
Silly questions, I know. But hey, maybe someone has done this before.
I don't exactly remember where it is but if you're using the stock rom if you go to settings (don't know where it really is) there's some feature that allow you to do that, contacts msgs etc.. Its not group play but it's similar to it.. If you're using the stock rom then look for it kuz that's one of the things I first saw when I got the s4...

Ok, so I ended up just sending all the contacts via Bluetooth since I needed them. That works fine, however they still haven't uploaded to Google. Web searching reveals lots of people with this issue.

Settings->Accounts->Google->your account->Sync now should work.
It doesn't.
To the top, still looking for an answer here.
Try this
Select all the contacts that's on device and export it to sd card.
Now chose import from sd card and select which gmail account to import to.
The phone will scan the sd card and should pick up the file you exported earlier.
Edit: I just make up a bunch of contacts and save it to my device. Did the export to sd and import to my gmail account and it sync.

You're a genius. Since this is a work phone and didn't come with one, I had no SD card in it and obviously didn't want to spend my own money on one for it, thus the export to SD wasn't an option listed. I took the old SD card from my Sensation 4G, did as you suggested, and it worked. Thanks so much!
The only downside was that since I had so many contacts, I got a couple errors that I was trying to do too many at once. Hopefully it all panned out, I will be able to check Monday at the office. I am hoping the new contacts added here will sync down to my Outlook at work, but I think they will.
Thanks again!
EDIT: Everything worked fine. Thanks again!
