i would say it has to do with development in the aspect that we can see what roms are most used and that might help the developers deside what ppl want in there roms and maybe add some features that other roms have to there´s to get it more popular.
would also help new ppl decide what rom to take since they will prolly start with the one most ppl use couse that must be allround good and pretty general appealing also it gives a better oversight of what roms that there are.
I use Defrost now cause I like the AOSP Rom, but when I do use Sense, it's LeeDroid All the way..
Both are super stable, have almost all features people require, and if they dont, the dev's are usually able to include it within a couple releases. Also, both dev's spend alot of time interacting with the communities on the forums, which is a great sign of ANY rom!
My own Rom Based on the HTC Stock Froyo 2.10.405.2...
Many of us been using leedroid... I wish there's a leedroid version of non sense super fast stable rom... hope oxygen makes it perfect ^^ i love everything about non sense, but sense dialer is just owning...
I'm running LeeDroid 2.2f because for me, it's a good ratio of classic HTC Sense feeling to root and modding options. Or, to put it like this: It allows me to use all the good things about Sense without restricting me too much. Perfect for a user who, like me, is pretty new to Android.
My prerequisites are sense, UI close to stock, normal battery consumption, a2sd+ and UVOC.I have tried the following over the past couple of weeks:
Leedroid 2.2f- too much bloatware, monstrous battery consumption but the most reliable
dj droid 1.8 - closest to stock, has battery z mod, stable, doesn't have OC, a2sd doesn't function properly.
AuraXTSense 8.0- I'm sticking with this one, it is not bloated, a2sd+ works, fast. Clock with weather widget acts strange but working most of the time. I wouldn't call it unreliable but I managed to freeze it two times [email protected]
Cyanogen 6.0.2. - no sense.
Rom by ieftm - I was planning of sticking with this but it needs to get fixed. One time it installs properly, the other I'm in a boot loop. Changing between recoveries doesn't help here.

I`m running CM 6.0.2 because i like Stock Android and it suits me fine...
I use Leedroid 2.2 f as Outlook sync is needed. It's very stable, fast and frugal with SetCPU and Juice Defender configured.

I'm using LeeDroid, in part because it's close to what i was moving from and because i also sync with Outlook. I've not yet been brave enough to remove Sense completely, as i'm guessing the HTC sync will go with it.
originally i used sense roms and tried various others (had to go back to sense as aosp roms stuttered and were laggy in comparison for me with 7 full screens). now i go between open desire, oxygen and miui (but with zeam launcher).
really at this point, it's a toss up between the latter 2 - at least until gingerbread comes out
Hey guys (new user here),
I'm a linux kernel hacker, and i just got my first android phone this week (HTC Droid Incredible), and installed Cyanogenmod on it, but I want to customize it.
What I'm looking for is which rom to use for a fairly experienced linux kernel hacker that is just starting android development. The end goal is some pretty heavy kernel/OS modifications.
Cyanogenmod looks to be the most popular with users, but I can't find if it is the most
HTC's Developer Website has the vanilla kernels it looks like. I enjoy starting with a vanilla linux kernel, so would this be doable, or is the vanilla in a pretty much unusable state?
I'm open to other suggestions for ROMs. Looking for one with great support for starting developers (as opposed to user support).
A side question is what forums/wikis/sites are a good resource for developers in particular (other than this one) as opposed to just users.

You wont necessarily be making the kernals ROM specific per say. You'd be making them either AOSP or Sense compatable as those are different. Usually what the kernal devs here do is make the same kernal for both Sense and AOSP, its all up to you! Welcome to Droid Inc Development!

I will root my Desire the next days and then want to update to a custom rom.
There are some things i really need:
1. A2SD (that i can store any apps on the SD card)
2. Stable (NO bugs)
3. Sense (maybe normal sense, but might be also a port from the desire HD/Z)
4. Fast-Browser WITH Flash
5. (not so important) a Rom which is not overloaded and themed, i like the way sense looks, with all it's fonts and pictures.
Would ne great if someone could tell my what rom he would suggest for me and my needs.

One more voice for "iNsertCoin HD/Z Port". I am still using older version "1.8f".. No FCs, very nice and smooth. No lags for me.

I have been using the REMIxHD and it all seems to work very well, very fluid lag free flash works standard browser so might give dolphin ago. But then again when I got the LG GT540 on 2.1 thought it was good at the time.
I am using standard leedroid 2.3d. Working great for me and fits into your criteria.

The phone runs an older verison of the ROM in the video, which was laggy. EQ does not work, desire lacks of hardware.
I think you should go with a 2.2 Froyo ROM such as LeeDroid and not the HD/Z ports or Gingerbread.
I used to have RCMIXHD 3.0 A2SD and had a great experience with it. Surprisingly fast.
If Sense is not a priority for you, I'd recommend Oxygen or MIUI XJ, way smoother than any Sense HD port.
I used to love sense too. Sense is lovely.
These days though I realise that it's just eye candy - free yourself and get rid of it.
Go for Redux 1.0.2 (Gingerbread) which is the fastest smoothest ROM I've used (and I've used a lot).
Launcherpro has some god damn accurate Sense style widgets built in, and you can easily mod its dock to look the same as the sense dock, so you can have the sense look and feel, whilst still being able to use all the free space that sense usually takes up

I had a HTC hero before and used Android without sense, but the audio player for example sucks ...
i think i will stick to froyo and sense until the official gingerbread+sense comes out and someone has rooted it and created a custom rom.
Or is there anything in gingerbread that ist better than in froyo?

Actually i think LeeDroid is overloaded. The pictures i've seen are full with custom logos, fonts, etc, etc.
I Just want the original sense/sense HD style.
What ROM would you recommend? What about the Rooted Stock Roms?
And another question: Does slowing down the CPU when screen ist of (what is possible in some ROM's) really help for more battery life? I'm not really convinced and afraid of destroying anything on my loved HTC Desire..

There is nothing like that in LeeDroid. i think you are getting a wallpaper
confused with the os. or maybe you saw a boot animation and got it
confused either way it is "stock" sense with tweaks and it runs very
nicely. I swear by it anyway and put it on all my friends desires.
I went to HD roms but they either start running slow or take
too long to open things like the music player, this all bugged me so i
ditched it. I got the feeling that it wasnt designed for this hardware.
It might be good by now but who knows.
With leedroid i set the cpu scaling to "smartass" so it dips when nothing
is happening or the screens off and rises back to the top when in use.
"ondemand" does the same i believe but each governor has its advantages.
This all helps battery life but i cant say how much because ive been
running it for so long i dont notice.
Leedroid also has an intergrated fix for the charge issue with sense roms where
the battery is never at 100% when you take it off charge.
Try StarBurst lite is what you are looking for,
its Stock Sense with simple D2Ext. Kernel is LeeDroid 2.3 from snq - major Battery saver.

Im using coolexe hd version 7,got a2sd sending apps to memory card. Batterys good,pretty much the same,but this is dependant on the amount of apps and things you get id say, The hd sense is much better in my opinion,more customization. Htc.com onboard but only some things work,lovely rom though id take that one a go,insertcoins good also,ive tried aurax also.all good.try them all mate,once you know the score test as many as u want!
A simple, stable gingerbread would be Oxygen 2.0.1.
A feature rich, fully customiseable alternative is the Cyanogen ROM (link in signature).
Choose whatever suits your needs.

Before i switched to CM7, i used Insert coin and it was really really fast and was stable only reason i switched to CM7 was due to better themes and more settings

I have a HTC Desire Z and I'm currently using the Vision Sense 1.82.405.1 Untouched ROM. I'm also thinking of trying out other ROMs, particularly those that are based on Gingerbread (though I admit I don't fully know what advantages Gingerbread has over Froyo).
I'm generally happy with the phone as it is now, but my main gripes are its speed - it lags noticeably sometimes - and battery life - I get about a day at most, and by that I mean from the time I wake up to the time I sleep, not 24hrs).
Are there any comparisons/writeups on what the various ROMs offer, and how they're different from one another?

I'm running Blackdroidmod 3.3.0 with stock Radio, set the governer @ Interactive min 386mhz and max 1016mhz and I'm using LauncherPro (plus) instead of the stock/ADW launcher. I love it and I reach 20 hours easily with moderate usage.
(2~ 4 calls/day, average of 10 texts, lots of whatsapp messages and activesync @ 2 accounts + 2 x pop3 accounts polling every hour, fb polling every 15 mins, weather sync every 2 hours, some gaming and listening to mp3) and it's always smooth (806mhz max is enough if you don't use multiple apps at the same time).
It's stable and everything works right away from the first time I flashed it. CM7.0 is good... but isn't very stable in my opinion and misses some applications while Blackdroidmod looks a bit like Sense.

Really not much, if you are a Sense fan. Google fixed a bunch of aesthetic/theming stuff, and improved the keyboard. Most of which is moot, since HTC themes mostly override the theme changes, and HTC uses their own keyboard. There may be some performance improvements or bug fixes. But in running both Froyo and GB ROMs, I didn't notice much performance difference. This might be due to the fact that most of the current Gingerbread ROMs are ports from other phones, or based on the leaked Desire Z test ROM. But I have not tried the recent G2 (no Sense) leaked test ROM, which is supposed to be pretty fast.
HTC Sense really slows down the phone, so a move to any ROM without Sense will probably improve your performance. Alternately, the lag you are noticing is probably due to the Sense launcher, which seems to be a CPU and memory hog. Try another launcher, like ADW or Launcher Pro, and you will probably find it improves performance quite a bit. You will lose the HTC widgets, but retain some of the nice HTC features, like the camera.
Getting a "waking day" (charge overnight) out of a modern smartphone is pretty normal. Of course, it completely depends on how much you use your phone. But with moderate use, I have yet to get more than a day, on various ROMs and radios. I can get 24 hours+ on very light use. What is your screen brightness set to? The screen brightness is actually one of the biggest battery drain culprits. If its on auto, turn that off, and reduce the brightness to the lowest setting you find usable/tolerable. Mine is on 35%. Just going from auto to a lower setting can improve battery life quite a bit.
If you like sense, I've found the battery life on the Trollogen Mod 0.9.1 to be SPECTACULAR. So far it's given me the best battery life out of all the ROMs I've tried. That includes Virtuous with the advanced kernel and multiple SetCPU profiles and the stock Gingerbread ROMs.
I tried running the battery down last night at a friends place for laughs and left music running on Wi-Fi with full brightness. I was constantly turning the screen on and looking at websites and so forth and by the time I got home (6 hours later) it had only just hit 67%. What's surprising is I didn't need a custom kernel or to modify it with SetCPU
Wow, 3 replies, 3 different suggestions. This is gonna be tough...
So far I've only heard of Virtuous, GingerVillian and Cyanogenmod, never heard of the others.
Oh I forgot to mention I'd like something that's stable as well, I've noticed things crash/reload quite a bit currently.
Trollogen is still a beta but its fairly stable as far as I can see. But if stability is really an issue you should stick with virtuous and install a new kernel on it.
My suggestion for a stable rom would be Virtuous with the advanced kernel. With 1.0.2 OCed to 1.3GHz and stock battery,i got about 16hrs of life with moderate use. Replaced with mugen 1800mAh and now can get 20hrs with moderate use and 30hrs with light use.
Havent used CM or TGM yet, but SenseGinger goes have some bugs in it which turned me away before. I would probably stick with a Froyo release until the official 2.3 rom gets released by HTC.

Lately there have been so many new ports, it's hard to keep up...but I do! (But mostly with Sense) Flash something new very night, but I always keep coming back to virtuous 1.0.2 with advanced kernel 2.2.0.
Everything just works, always (except HTC calendar widget disappears after a reboot, for some reason). Very speedy for sense, and being able to overclock pushes it into a winning position for me versus the gingerbread sense roms.
Xboarder56's stock gingerbread worked pretty well for me while I was on it for a couple of days. Worth a try!

Both Virtuous G-lite and Fusion have OC kernels and shouldn't have to flash a new one on install. Just have to get SetCPU or CPUTuner to enable the OC, both up to 1.5GHz.

G-Lite is a Gingerbread ROM, with no Sense. Fusion is a port of Gingerbread (from another phone), with Sense 3.0. Sense 3.0 has some cool new features, but the launcher takes up most of the phone's memory (our phone is not meant to run Sense 3.0, and we won't be getting it "officially" for this reason). Just about every time you go back to the launcher home, it needs to reload the launcher, which is annoying. There are also some graphical glitches. So I found Fusion fun to play with for a while, but I'm back on Froyo, probably until the official Sense ROM for our device is released (and a rooted version is posted here).
If you want Sense, stability and usability, the "original" Virtuous is probably what you want. Its easy to install. You can download straight in ROM Manager, and flash from there. You might not have to do a full wipe, since you are coming from a stock Froyo Sense ROM. But if you have any issues, you should probably wipe (dalvik, cache, and data) and flash again. Also, do a nandroid/clockwork backup of your current ROM, before you flash Virtuous, in case you have the need or desire to return to your current setup. ROM Manager will give you the choice to backup the current ROM when you go to flash Virtuous.
Virtuous comes overclocked to 1 GHz by default. The advanced kernel gives additional overclocking options (up to 1.51 GHz), that's all. Advanced kernel pretty much requires you to setup screen-off profiles with SetCPU (or similar app) or you will (AFAIK) almost certainly have issues with the screen waking. So you might not want to mess with it, and to stick with the default/included kernel, unless you are really interested in OC speeds over 1 GHz.
The Virtuous Gingerbread kernel allows overclocking of G-Lite and Fusion. They can't be used with the "regular" (Froyo based) Virtuous. Vice versa is also true.
But really, there isn't a whole lot that Virtuous actually gives you in addition to stock. You can flash the Godspeed kernel on the stock ROM, if you want to overclock. Virtuous also has trackpad wake, which is very cool. But again, you can do this mod on the stock ROM. So modding the stock ROM to your liking may be another option.
The insertcoin rom is another half way house option. It is Sense 2.1 based with some 3.0 bits added.
It is still a bit more memory intensive than stock, but it does have the very cool lockscreen, which is one of my main reasons for sticking with it. That and the CRT animations always keep me happy.
I have been using it as my daily driver for a while now.

If you want something other then a Sense Rom. You could try meXdroid. It is stable and fast. It is a Gingerbread Rom (2.3.4) I have been using his roms for a while now. meXdroid is not a Sense Rom. It just has a theme. Look at the link in the post above. You can see a few screen shots of the Rom there. You can overclock meXdroid to 1.5 ghz also. You really don't need to though. It is fast at 800 mhz. I know Quadrant does not mean a lot but at 800 mhz my scores are 2500+ and at 1.2 ghz my scores are 3000+.

That's a question to be asked yourself.
AOSP roms have jit and are stable but they dont have sense widgets. The good part in sense roms is sense widgets and their integration to accounts like facebook, twitter etc..,
Check some roms and decide yourself. Depends on ur needs

I think only u r saying it slow. Its really fast. Atleast I feel
Overclocking is increasing of cpu frequency to speed up the phone. We can find the difference but it wont be superfast. U can find it under settings / cyanogenmod settings / performance.

head over to the Android Development section of the the wildfire forum and start reading about rooting your phone. I suggest using unRevoked. Once rooted a kernel needs to be flashed, i suggest HCDR.Jacobs.kernel v4.1 ad v4.2 has minor issues with wifi on some roms. The kernel is flashed in recovery which you should be familiar with if you are talking about roms and such. Once the kernel is installed you can download setCPU and overclock the phone to whatever you desire.
That is how you speed up the phone, if you wish to speed up startup browse the xda-developers home page and find the startup manager app, only a few days old and disable startup apps.
Next in terms of roms and speed, guys there is no clear definition as to what is meant by fast, true HTC sense roms are bloated but they make sense and usually allow you to get things done quicker and easier, cm7 is fast in terms of startup and how barebone the rom is. Both are fast and remember the rom is only as bloated as you make it yourself.
Another thing to keep in mind when talking about speed is the speed of your memory card, here the different classes come into play like a class 4 memory card will be faster than a class 2 and so forth.
Last but not least i would like to add that the fastest i have ever gotten my phone was at 245mhz min and 710mhz (ofcourse i could go to 760, but 710 is a sweetspot) max overclocked running a froyo sense with ADW EX launcher set to a preset default of performance. I assure you i have never seen the app drawer open and close and scroll as fast as that.
