TouchWiz features - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

Hey guys,
I've seen a lot demo videos on sense UI and the vanilla android UI.
they've got nice features, like the twitter widget and the mac os like pinch-zoom on the homescreen @ sense UI.
Or the vanilla lockscreens with the ability to mute the phone without unlocking.
so how about a TouchWiz featurelist, here in this topic, where we summon all the features we discover.
Already known features:
unused homescreens can be deleted
apps can be shown in list-view and "iphone"-view

- Wifi, silent, vibration and bluetooth toggles in the notification area
- Uninstall applications just by tapping them on "edit mode"
- Docked icons on the homescreen
- A swipe to the right on a name in the phonebook will call the contact
- A swipe to the left on a name in the phonebook will start the new message interface

Hey, I've just watched the Touch Wiz 3.0 demo
youtube.com/watch?v=qRM5bf35yqs&feature=related
and at 17 secs into the vid it states that you can toggle between widget and application menu by swiping the screen up and down.? can anybody confirm this?
And it also states that Touch Wiz has a smart task manager, can that also be confirmed? (1.06min into the vid)
Thx alot!

yeah, i just checked that on the samsung wave ... since it has touchwiz 3.0 too it has the same nice feature =)

Owners:
The calendar included with TouchWiz syncs with Google calendar or with Yahoo?
The video from Las Vegas presentation shows some Yahoo services, but I suppose it's also available for Google.

The screenshot feature stated in the beginning doesn't seem to work.

new widgets available

Just did a widget update and noticed two new widgets are available for download. One allows you quick access to change your profile and the other allows you quick access to
change your ringtone.
How do you do a widget update?

No problems. To the OP, thanks for the heads up. I have two new widgets on my page and was able to remove some third party one. Useful!
Is there a way I can easily change my phone behaviour from ring to ring+vibrate?
I would like to have a switch but the HTC widget only gives you ring only/vibrate only/silent.

Yes, but essentially it does the same action as the HTC widget - vibrate only. It doesn't give you the option ring+vibrate.
Haven't read your previous post exactly and didn't see the + sign between ring and vibrate. Your right

Most annoying missing features in mango

Apparently after a wonderful time playing with my mango HD7 phone, I suddenly remember one thing that I always wish to have in WP7: the ability to play audible books. Hell yea why did not they have this feature? Even my Ipod first generation can do this.
Wifi / Bluetooth Toggle
Gapless music playback
Music scrubber
Customizable accent colors
Un-removable of the Folder button in the email app. (Seriously MS? At least make these customizable)
Visual Voicemail (on AT&T)
Option to default to keypad (instead of history) when hitting the phone tile
Week mode on the calendar
I'm really digging deep, but that's all I can thing of on my end. I don't understand why the phone doesn't have gapless playback while my Zune HD does.
Also, is anyone else disappointed that "zune-esque" artist background on WP7 is nothing like the Zune HD artist background? One is a still picture, the other is a slideshow with changing colors and text rolling across the screen in a very cool way.

Yes. There should be an easy way to toggle this on the homescreen. Like when you hit the top of the phone to get information, the wifi / bluetooth / vibrate icons should all be selectable buttons that toggle.

I really miss that. How annoying is the screen rotating.
I would also like a Bluetooth toggle. I only turn it on when I'm driving to save battery and its a hassle going into settings multiple times a day.
I'm also missing tethering.

You can pin the settings link to your homescreen which makes it only slightly more bearable. But yeah that would be very handy, though I think using the top status bar wouldn't work very well since the icons would be hard to hit dead on. Perhaps add them to the screen that pops down when you toggle the volume?
And I too wish for a better audiobook system, one where my place is always saved regardless of a reboot, the app being closed, etc.
Agreed
I agree with you guys. Being able to toggle WiFi, Bluetooth, or in my case airplane mode would be handy, but not a deal breaker. I have pinned “Settings” to the start screen. This has helped a bit.
The deal breaker for me is a useable, WiFi capable Skype app. I’ve waited all I can. I’m eligible for a device in January and I’m gone for good if they don’t have this fixed by then.
I really don’t want to switch at all, but I need Skype and will go without no longer.
……. although that HTC Holiday is looking pretty sexy.

That's not a bad idea, I wouldn't just have them there all the time though. Give us the ability to pin settings type things there as we want them. That way we can choose between "the look" and "the functionality."

Some Tips & Tricks

I stumbled across these and thought I would share. Feel free to add anything you might have found:
If you turn off auto-brightness, you can brighten the screen with a swipe of the finger. Just press the notifications area and move your finger left or right.
On both the homescreen and the apps menu you will see a row of dots indicating which page you are on. Hold the dot and scroll left or right. The pages will quickly scroll until you see the page you want.
You can focus your camera on a specific thing by touching that area on your screen.
In the camera app you can use the volume buttons to zoom in and out. OR you can pinch to zoom in and out.
Mute the Battery Notification (using Tasker) Directions are here.
Swipe left on contact name from the contact list and you'll automatically be able to send a text.
Swipe right on a contact name from the contact list and you'll automatically be able to call them.
Press your home button and lock screen button (power button) at the same time to save a screenshot.
You can scroll much faster on some apps such as YouTube, Astro File Manager and Market by using 3 fingers and if you scroll with 2 fingers you get precise scrolling (no scroll momentum).
Hold down the home button to access recent programs and the task manager.
Good stuff. Thanks!
Very useful tips, thanks!
But aren't these two basically the same thing?

I'll still never understand the logic of having a WHITE background in a messaging app... Talk about a battery killer!
That's one thing I'm going to miss about the Moment. Black background in the STOCK app, rather than having to install a 3rd party app.
All though, if I'm forced to, Go SMS is my preference.

Thanks for the tip! It worked but now I have a followup question. Is there anyway to use the Handcent Icon widget in my dock? One of the reasons I love Handcent is the widget that shows how many unread messages I have.
FYI, other reasons I like Handcent: the lockscreen popup, it allows me to use my own sounds/mp3s as ringtones and alarms, Emoji pack allows me to send and receive emoji icons with my iPhone friends
U can hold 2 points on the screen like with ur thumbs for example. Then tilt ur phone forward or back to zoom. Just like that 10.1 tablet

Can you turn off the silly "bubble" chat with Handcent yet? Last time I tried it (a year ago) I couldn't stand the comic book look.
I'll probably use Go SMS until a dev over at SDX reverse releases a black version of the stock SMS.apk.
I'm also hoping the old version of GMail works so I can copy it over and use it with LauncherPro with working mail counts.
U dont have to have to have the bubble look. Handcent gives us different options. Android style is included if u r curious

Issue 22746: Bookmarks are too hard to view on ICS browser

Please star this issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22746&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
It takes too much effort to use bookmarks in Ice Cream Sandwich. The menu does not give an option to go to the bookmarks. Instead you must go to the open tabs selection screen first. That's far too much effort for something that is used often. As well as the menu, the bookmarks are not listed in the Quick Controls option either.
Please add them on the next update.

Long-press the back button will default to the "History" tab.
You must swipe to the right to go to the "Bookmark" tab.
And you must do this every time you want to access the bookmark.
Every single time ... Long-press, swipe right, press bookmark ... repeat ...
That's not efficient, long pressing and swiping then press

I don't have a GN, but I agree, that looks like an issue. I like having 1 touch access to my bookmarks. It might get kinda tedious doing what you described
I agree this is an issue, but as a work around, I put all of my commonly used ones as widgets in a single slot on my home screen. That way I can always just hit home, then hit the favorite link.
I do this on my iphone as well, so it's nothing new for me, and I would likely use it this way even if they were easier to get to.
Most of these issues will probably go away once we get all of the decent 3rd party browsers working for ICS (Dolphin, etc)
The Ics 4.0.3 browser has direct access to your Bookmarks via the quick controls. Finally.
Hopefully we'll end up being able to choose our own quick controls..
I agree with this thread, a button to get to the bookmarks with 1 click is necessary.
Yes this is very annoying oversight. Hopefully will be addressed promptly.
This problem is addressed in 4.0.3. This version adds a bookmarks selection in the quick controls.
You can see it in this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4omtsG1b7g&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
Here's a screenshot as well.
What can you do now with the Quick Controls? Can you list all of them?
Thanks.

a couple that come to mind right away would be to have the edge bring up apps for multi-screen, another would be jsut to have it bring up recents, then remap the recent button to menu.
would be great is somehow the edge screen could be on everytime the main screen is on, without any other user intervention..
