Noob Desire Tethering question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I select "internet sharing" when connecting to my PC, does that mean my PC uses my mobile data, or does it mean my desire can use my PC's internet ?
Ideally I want my desire to use my computers connection when I am in my office (i'm on telstra in australia with a limited 3G plan)
Thanks, Dean

It means your PC is using your mobile data (with your limited 3G plan) and NOT the other way around.
If you need internet connection in office, I suggest that you make use of any Wifi in office instead of your limited 3G plan.

I though so

Cheers, Dean

Wi-Fi should be the preffered network over GPRS EDGE.
Someone will have a better answer than me, but what you can do is go to your GPRS setting in settings\connections\GPRS and change the GPRS from being on Internet to Work, not the greatest way but i use it to stop GPRS due to being on a very limited data package.
I put the GPRS connection to work, and i think its using my wifi connection now. Can Opera mini use the wifi connection or is it only GPRS, when i try to go to a site it might cost me airtime.

Mini can use wi-fi, the way you will tell not using GPRS is that above the signal bar u will not have a little g, not to be confused with the big G in the middle of top to which just says GPRS is available.

just connect your hd to your PC via usb and than when you get a pop up message (activesync , internet sharing , disk drive) choose "internet sharing".
that's it
Will this use alot more of my internet i gt unlimited internet bundle but only to 500mb i think
depends what you do with it. but yes, it will use however much of your GPRS internet package you use.
I've been doing this for ages on O2's unlimited data plan.
And I use the wifi sharing app instead of connecting it by USB since it's obviously more convenient.
I use internet sharing with the USB-cable quite a lot. Every week when I travel by train for 2 hours.
In some regions I have a bad reception and the connection drops every now and then, but when my reception is good I even can chat with Windows Live Messenger on my laptop, with both webcams turned on (mine and the person I'm talking to).
I'm very happy with internet at my laptop

That's not what he means.
With a program for your HD you can send Wifi signals, like a router.
You just use your incoming phone signal and that program sends it out as Wifi again. Than you can connect to the wifi-signal with your laptop.
It is the same as internet sharing via the usb cable, but without the cable
If you want this, look for WMWifiRouter (paid) or HTC Wifi Sharing (free!)

How is it (much) faster through USB?
If I connect to O2's HSDPA network (which I frequently do) I get around 3-4Mbps and that's the network maximum so not sure where you got the cable is faster idea...

i measured it... when connected to usb my download speed was 500kb/s and when connected to my phones wifi my speed was 40kb/s...
i guess that communication between my laptop and pda is much faster when connected through usb , nothing else.

Stealth Tethering On WP7?

has anyone found out a way to do this on wp7? and broadcast the signal via wifi like we use to do on windows mobile with wmwifi router? without the cell phone providers knowing?
I'd like to know this too. Then I could use it to give my nook wifi

Official tethering doesn't even exist right now, and neither does stealth WiFi tethering.
But some phones have USB tethering working via some dialing codes I believe.

[Q] Internet pass through

Does anyone know if it's possible to use this when using your phone as a WIFI hotspot, or does the hotspot only use your data connection? Cheers
I'm not sure what you're asking, but the Wifi hotspot option only allows you to share your phone's 3g connection with wireless enabled devices. If you're on Orange they've probably blocked it by default so you need to configure it.

He is asking if he can forward the Internet connection from the PC using a USB cable (Internet Passthrough mode) and further pass it to other devices using the WiFi hotspot feature IN THE SAME TIME

Yeah, that's what I want to do. Picked up an iPad 2 on Friday, but don't have WIFI at work. Was hoping to share my PCs internet connection instead of using my data.
I'm in the same boat. No wifi at work and would like to share my pc's interenet through the phone's as a wifi hotspot. Theoritically this should be possible. Any third party softwares which allow this?
Hmm, cant test it now due to some reasons but it's possible to use your phone as a wifi card.
For example connect your phone to wifi and activate usb tethering. Now your on the wifi nework with your pc.
I think that yours should be possible too
Tapatalked with Tapatalk from my Desire HD using Tapatalk.
I'm trying to do the opposite, not usb tethering, rather internet passthrough. Basically I want to use the phone as a wifi router (but not using mobile network as the source of net).

Unfortunately , I guess , this couldn't be possible , because when HTC Desire HD device is connected via " Internet pass through " , the internet connection is neither 3G , nor WIFI . I can't be a hundred percent sure that this is right , but as far as you know there are some GAMELOFT games , which require downloaded CACHE/DATA for playing them . This downloading could be possible , when your device has been connected to Internet , no matter 3G/4G or WIFI .
Once I tried via " Internet pass through " to download this DATA/CACHE files ,but there appeared a notification saying Im neither 3G , nor WIFI connected . So I couldn't succeed in downloading the files . ( I've tried many games , yet has never managed to download DATA/CACHE game files via "Internet pass through" )
My opinion is that WIFI-HOTSPOT can be activated only when you are connected via 3G/4G/WIFI network . But anytime you want , you could try if it is possible via "Internet pass through" be established a WIFI-HOTSPOT
: ))
Create a txt file "qaWifiOnlyMode.txt" and inside write FALSE , put in the root of your sd ... and the game will ask your permission to use carrier network , if internet pass through are active will use the USB connection
(sorry bad english, i'm drunk)

[Q] Tether through wifi

Also sounds like trying to go through an unnecessary circular loop. If you had Wi-Fi, wouldn't it be better to connect other devices directly to the Wi-Fi access via a router or Ethernet cable rather than trying to tether via the cell phone? Assuming you could find a way of doing this, it would only amount to an otherwise avoidable run on your monthly data allotment. If I haven't understood your connection, please pardon me and clarify.
