OK, So I just installed SDK.... (noob) Question about installing of Platform 2.2 - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was on my way trying to root my incredible and had downloaded SDK and HTC Sync in the process. Well after trying for hours endlessly to root, I started messing around with SDK and when it initially loads it's set on the 'installed packages' tab and there is a button that allows you to refresh and update all. Well I hit one of those two buttons (I forget which) anyway it gave me a list of packages to install and one of them said 'SDK Platform Android 2.2, API 8, Revision 1'
I'm really new and pretty clueless to Android, but I am already looking forward to the froyo upgrade. I was wondering.. is this it?

I was curious to see what would happen if I clicked 'install' so I did. It now says 'Installing Archives' and its going verrrry slow.
Is this just installing some type of archives onto a folder on my HD?
I don't get it...
I'm lost over here

Nevermind I think I answered my own questions

no, that is for developers making apps for Froyo.

I think its a pretty safe bet that Android devs will achieve full root and have a custom 2.2 before VZW gets around to pushing it out.

How can i go back to default?

I tried the "IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!!".... to no avail.
I had fallowed the instructions to a tee and around step 55 it all went down hill, it was supposed to automatically flash a ROM and it did nothing, and now i have probably screwed it up worse. Phone is still 100% functional but i would like to reset back to factory settings, no root, no nand, no custom rooted ROMS, nothing.
Does anyone know of a way to get my phone back to the way it was when i walked out of Best Buy earlier today?
Thanks for the help and all the great resources here at XDA.
Daugusta.
Search for and run the RUU
Step 55? Thats the idiot proof guide? I followed the original guides and there were like 10 steps max..
Haha, could i snag a link to the guide you used? also, where can i find this RUU?
Thanks.

This is not flashed, its an exe so its run while your phone is plugged in. Should go smoothly, but as always know the risks of flashing anything
I've heard toasts method is pretty solid for rooting.
Quick question wouldn't this be in Q & A? Not trying to come off as a jerk. Just my 2 cents

RUU Is not working, i get it to start, it restarts my phone and then sits their at a black screen that says "HTC" Then the program says "Waiting for boot loader" and counts to like 75 and then errors saying that it cannot connect to the phone. I then tried to start the process, pull the battery, then manually put it into the boot loader and the program never recognizes it.
Anyone else have another idea, or a way to get this working?
Thanks,
Daugusta
I believe you have to use HTC sync when you run it, though I could be mistaken. Search YouTube, there's a video of it somewhere. I wouldn't give up on rooting just yet though.
Trust me im not giving up
Try the 1-click Root Method
I looked at the fifty-five step root method and peed my pants, then I hit up jiqqaman's one-click root method. Stable root, and you can flash the stock (rooted) rom.

When I have ran an rru from previous HTC phones I have had to have sync up. But then again its never been at a black screen

Ya, i had the HTC sync running as well, synced up fine with my comp but the RUU still gave me the same error.
Im running this on Win 7 64 Bit, im guessing the 64 bit may be the problem. ill try it on a different comp and see how it goes.
Just tried it on a 32 bit Windows 7 comp, still same issues.
Sucks man, coming from the iphone world this rooting stuff seems a hell of a lot more complicated. The last jailbreak I did on my 3GS I downloaded 1 program, plugged by phone into the PC, clicked 1 button and bam!
This andriod root stuff is waaaaay more difficult, NAND this, bootloader that, recovery this, RUU that, adb this, zip and flashing all kinds of stuff. Wish there was a simpler method. Im obviously a noob so Im sure it will get easier with time.

It should work. After the program doesn't recognize it, while your phone is at the HTC logo. Close the program on your pc and start it again.

There shouldn't be any problems caused by 64-bit OS. I used Win7 Ult 64-bit and it worked fine. Do you have the HTC Sync drivers? That may fix the problems you have.

I noted this too, only I didn't have an iPhone, just an iPod Touch. Despite this, I am having a lot more fun with Android and how it works. I.E. *.9.pngs which made made jaw drop when I understood how it works. SO AMAZING.
I don't think I will ever be much of a dev, but who knows. I have been digging through a TON of documentation over the past 2-3 weeks.
Thread moved to Q&A.
well I'm pretty much over this rooting business. Ill wait for the official froyo update from Sprint/HTC and not worry about this crap, no camera, instability, bricking, etc. Guess I'm not much of an android hacker and the phone works pretty well bone stock.
Here are my questions...and please explain this to me like I am mentally retarded haha...
For returning my phone to bone stock, Like Day 1, same as it was when I walked out of Sprint store...
1) download .exe file from post #1 onto my PC
2) plug EVO into USB on PC (run in USB debug mode?)
3) Run .exe file while EVO is in Andriod
4) Select yes, yes, blah, blah and it will do its thing automatically?
Is this correct? Some have mentioned I need to download HTC sync onto PC. Yes - No? Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully someone can comment THAT HAS ACTUALLY DONE THIS and not just guessing/speculation can assist.

Great question.. Some of these long winded threads need trimming and a definite answer listed out. Clutter = confusion

[Q] Drivers for root possibly corrupted?

So I had to take my EVO in to get replaced today for screen issues. Got the new one home, same 004, 3.30 versions. Fire up UnrEVOked3 and away I go!
First time I got Internal error: Couldn't find misc.
So, I looked around and didn't really find any useful answers, so I formatted my SD card, popped into the OS to make a quick phone call and then ran UnrEVOked again. This time it says "This was a triumph." However S-ON is still listed in the boot loader.
So I make ABSOLUTELY certain that my driver is still there in the 3 minutes I didn't check it. Instead of saying Android Bootloader Interface or whatever it said a few minutes ago, it now says "Android Composite ADB Interface". I have NO clue what this is, and there's only 3 threads or so even mentioning it. I tried uninstallling and reinstalling the driver, but I get the same thing..
Any suggestions on how I can get this to work? I really want to root this thing, lol.
Im looking to root my phone as well and I read alot before I take on this kind of thing... I have read in several places, your version can't be rooted "yet"... Google your software version along with your hboot... See if any one can do it yet
Sent from the MATRIX... while plugged into my EVO... using the XDA app... from a galaxy far-far away.......
That's the thing. My previous phone was the same hardware and software version. It should work.
The only thing that has changed is the driver in the device manager.
Unrevoked can not be used on your phone to root it you have to use a defferent method. check your hboot, is it 2.02??? If it is go in the developers section and look for the rooting with hboot 2.02 Like a Boss post and follow the directions.

Anything Terminal Emulator, HBOOT or RECOVERY I can do, thanks for the help, google searching is pulling up all androids, allphone models, all Dates, I keep getting 2009 results.
ALSO, to anyone interested in Metro Flash, the 10 dollar phone flashing service from Metro PCS; in Nevada, found out yesterday, MetroFlash isnt available because the setup or network is/are changing or something. Do you have HTC Sync downloaded to your cpu. IF you don't you need to, so that you will have the drivers that you need to start the process.
I tried versions 2.something and the version on the htc support site, thanks though.

And you are sure you are downloading the correct version. Are you on windows? 32bit? 64bit? Mac? All of that matters so you D/L the correct version otherwise your cpu will not recognize your phone and install the drivers. If its not doing that then it has to be that you aren't having the drivers installed correctly.
I've had a bad USB cable be the culprit of my computer not recognizing my phone. Mine would say "unrecognized USB device" though.
I would try another cable and report back.
Dude i friggin LOVE the help, but the port on the phone is screwed. i actually came back to elaborate on my response; Ive downloaded Most of what I could to ADB if it were working- JDK, Android SDK full, super 1 click, autoroot, unrevoked3, and several RUUs. Initially I followed directions, after nothing working, I experimented. Then I did a faulty usb port search, and all of the suggestions were 'unplug and replug' and such. Its defected.
Spencer my computer isnt responding at all to the USB plug, but thats what posts said, it could be the port or the cord or the pc usb port/hub. its my phone.

Oooooooh, well you're probably looking for help in the wrong place. You need to take the phone for repair. But I did see a thread on here someone posted about how to root without using a computer, but I didn't actually open it to see what the process was. Maybe that will help you out.
You know what Swaze, Im un and re-installing right now, its HTC Sync SETUP 3.0.551, the other was htc sync2.0.35. Be back after the reboot.
-Went into SERVICES too, Id 'manualed' a few items that I hadnt considered..
I didnt answer either, but I have win7 32 and 64bits installed on this pc, Ive been on the 32bit since the first day.

Try mailing the files to u then use a file explorer to move where u want them. Unless ur using an ruu I don't think u actually need connection.
If I remember right unrevoked has set it up where u can do everything. from your phone using a web site. Maybe I'm wrong.

sand thats actually something worth trying, use a root file explorer to copy/paste the flash-image files since I dont have S-Off. Nice, thanks dude.
This will probably sound like the dumbest idea EVER but why can't you just buy a card reader and put the images on the SDCard the old fashioned way? Seems easy enough to me, am I missing something? Also couldn't use just copy the files over using your DropBox? Thats how I do it.
or how about WiFi Explorer? its an app in the market lets you browse and copy files to your SDCard via WiFi.

Update- Root Manually
Following Sand's suggestion, I began google searches of the manual root processes, supporting information, etc.
Here's where we're at
I began by copying the flash-image to the proper system folders, using Root Explorer, File Expert works too. If you copy files to system/protected folders with an ordinary file manager, the permissions fail.

Just updated another post, and this is what I put
in no particular order,
ADB Over TCP/IP Help
this was the most recent attempt, Android lacks adhoc support though
ADB For Beginners
Commands like 'cp' and 'cat' are used interchangeably it seems, when I find a fuller command list incorporating more, this one will be replaced
Always Up To Date Root Guide
This is a great place for ideas if you're stuck, theyve put all the verified instruct-files on one page. I guess thats what moderators on forum sites do, consolidate information, this was just easy to read without weeding through any unrelated information
Evo 4G Root/Android Root
This was another promising page I came across, but the the 300mb zip failed installation. 'Main Version is Older', all the files in the zip were for like 1.0 and my Evo's radio is 2.15. Changing the Android-info.text in rom .zips to match my devices information was my next idea. Do not do it though, scanning google result lines said it could brick your android.
Visionary, No ADB
This is last because it was a bastard, long story short its not even for the Evo. The jerk.
Updated Again - ADB over Tcp/Ip Works, How to Root?
I was tethering when I found the Adb over wifi so I didnt test it- shouldve though. I connect now cmd tells me, but the 1 step rooters arent working. Before I waste another weeks chasing bad paths, what should I use?
After wasting so much time with your issue, why haven't you used the time to get the phone fixed/replaced?
I had similar issues when I rooted my phone. My phone kept disconnecting while the rooting process was taking place. The issue I found out was my USB cord. I went to the Sprint store and got a new one, then my computer (W7) detected my phone through disk drive.
The new cord worked, using the AutoRoot program found in the rooting section here, and it completed my root.
I hadnt thought of that

SteveGrandRapids, youre a fricken GENIUS. Or an ass; I dont have Sprint. From another of my posts asking the same question:
''Uminchu I wish the problem was the port or plug. Then again if it were, the original owner wouldnt have sold it to me. ''
Thanks for the pollution.

wow ever think flashing to another company might be doin something? my phone was a pita to root im a total noob ran unrevoked stopped pulled the bat. red triangle restarted unrev picked up quit third time it restarted the whole process but ran thru and rooted me so i dont know metro pcs..i see their booths but sprints always been good to me

Adb ppc bus error

Ok before I begin I want to say I am not a total noob at this stuff, although I am not a master. I have rooted and installed roms, radios and Kernels on three different phones and I've also used adb to do some random things. I have only used them on windows pc's but never on an apple pc.
I got the HTC G2 to play around with, since I am not brave enough to do it on my SGS 4G. The first thing I did was install VISIONary+. I was able to acquire temp root but after tinkering with it I broke my R/W access(just an assumption). I decided to give up and go the good old ADB way.
I searched the forums and found solutions but they are only for intel based macs. I am running a PPC mac. I scoured the interwebz and have lucked out and found a guy who modified the files to works on PPC architecture's. He also stated that this was done on a Leopard laptop, Mine is tiger(yes i am to cheap and to fork out 150 bucks for a new OS) OS X 10.4.11.I am starting to feel my problem is the Tiger OS. When I connect my phone I enable debugging and connected it to my laptop. I open my terminal and type:
-------------
""/Users/brianjaqua/desktop/android_ppc/adb""
-------------
when I do that It gives me a bus error. I have also tried just double clicking the file to start adb that way and it gives me:
-------------
""Last login: Tue Jul 26 13:10:59 on console
/Users/brianjaqua/Desktop/android_ppc/adb; exit
Welcome to Darwin!
brian-jaquas-ibook-g4:~ brianjaqua$ /Users/brianjaqua/Desktop/android_ppc/adb; exit
Bus error
logout
[Process completed]""
-------------
I am stumped I have tried everything I can think of. When I did give up i tried installing the original rom that came with it to try and fix the R/W problem that VISIONary gave me. I tried a modified version that came with root already something that I was able to supposedly just do without rooting. The phone didn't even pick it up from the boot loader as being on my sd card, seemed to me like it just ignored the fact that it even existed. so i ditched it and went with a totally fresh pc10img.zip one that hadn't been tinkered with, yup same damn issue just ignored it's existence. Then I got Super excited when I found a leaked release of gingerbread on the interwebz. Every single darn person said boot loader acknowledged its existence and started to install it(even on unrooted phones) without an issue. But what did i get? a big **** slap to the face! once again my phone ignored its existence!!! WTF?!?!? So now I am stuck in the mudd while everyone else is enjoying the party. And yes Its on the root of my sd card.Any clue as to why it seems my phone doesnt want to install a pc10img.zip file? or why i cant use VISIONary+ or even why ADB is telling "**** you"? Any help would be greatly appreciated, even maybe just a nudge in the right direction or a "Hey Bro your not a total ****ing retard" would be greatly helpful. Thank you for reading my ramblings and such.
Make sure the pc10img.zip is all caps. If the mods were created on leopard I'm pretty sure you are SOL if running tiger. Don't use visionary for the exact reasons you mentioned above. Lion is only like 50 bucks.
Tiger is super outdated ya know

Phone Inadvertently Upgraded to 4.6.4. Is downgrade to 4.6.1 via ADB Safe?

I just received two phones (from the excellent eBay deal that I'm sure will drive more popularity of this forum), and stupidly, while working on the first one (getting CM11 on which went seamlessly), I forgot to disable updates on the 2nd. When I turned to the 2nd phone, my heart sank as I saw that it was now on 4.6.4 (464000220). My immediate thought was to boot into recovery and sideload 4.6.1 (820) but I remember reading that there is danger in downgrading this way?
Can anyone shed some light if downgrading this was is safe, or if I am no royally screwed? While Kingroot has no problem rooting 4.6.4, I'm trying to get to CM11 so I need Safestrap which apparently require 4.6.1 (820).
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks a bunch!
I received Fire Phone today from the eBay deal..
I was reading thru Forums before i connect to Wifi.
Could you please share how you disable updates?
So in the absence of any response, I decided to just do it, and can confirm that sideloading 4.6.1. after having updated to 4.6.4 is without any ill effects. What a relief. As the eBay deal has about 7000 purchases, I'm sure others will fall into the same hole, so I hope this is of help. I used used Minimal ADB to serve as the deskop-side bridge (largely because I already had it installed from when I flashed my HTC One M8).
I must say the flexibility and simplicity of flashing these fire phones is even better than with HTC Ones. Ability to sideload a ROM baked into stock recovery is fantastic. If only all manufacturers were as (perhaps unintentionally) flash friendly.
It's surprisingly easy. Simply go to Settings (the Gear Wheel in the menu), then on over to Manage Applications (I can't remember exactly what it says as I've flashed both my phones over). In this section, make sure to select the filter at the top to list All applications (I think it defaults to those "Downloaded"). Then simply scroll to two entries that say System Updates. Select each and select Disable. That's it!
As I mentioned, if you are looking to flash CyanogenMod (and you really should since FireOS is extremely clumsy and poorly thought out), this doesn't matter as you wiping the phone of FireOS when you do so. The good thing is that if you don't like CM, you can always flash back to FireOS per the flashable images provided in other threads here.
Hope this helps.

Just a heads up, my phone is an unlocked model on t-mobile and it OTA updated while I was in the store to 4.6.4. and rebooted into recovery with an error message. Only operation is to sideload. Will absolutely shut that **** off when I'm done.

I am on 4.6.1 and I disabled the 2 system updates app.
but still, its trying to download 4.6.4 update.
any idea..
How do you ADB fire phone.. I couldn't get ADB to work. I may miss drivers though.
I believe there is a third system file "DCP" that needs to be disabled. The list of apps adjusts in a couple threads here.
I would install a package called "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" which you can find on a Google search. A small and effective installation that works well.
