How DO you actually voice dial??? - Desire General

Hey guys, I've installed the voice search 2.1 apk and it's working fine, but today I decided to see if I could voice dial, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it working. Everything I say simply ends up a google search. If I long press the Search button while on the Home screen to bring up Voice Search, then say, for example, "Call Dad Mobile", all it does is do a Google Web Search for those exact words...I can't get it to actually dial!!
What am I doing wrong??? I also tried, "Open Calendar", and surprise surprise, it did a web search for those words. Nothing is working!!!

When you hold down the magnifying glass and say call someone, and it provides you with a google search, rather than actually calling someone.....
The problem is you have the wrong voice keyboard installed.
You were probably and early adopter of the device and installed the first one you found in a thread on here.
I had the same problem, and deleted the keyboard, installed a later one, and now it works.
Fon22

And where is the later one?

Do you mean Voice Search app or Voice Keyboard? I'm using Jonas' v27 HTC IME mod as my keyboard (created from the online skin generator).
If you mean Voice Search, I'm using Voice Search 2.1 apk, that I got from another website. Should I replace this with the one on the market place?

I'm running Jonas' v27 too, and I think the 2.1 voice APK (didn't install it separately, came with the MCR FroYo ROM). Works a charm for me (though only for some names, such as Adam Green, as most of my contacts have Eastern European names ).

Just tried replacing Voice Search with the one on the market place, and it's still doing exactly the same! I can use it for entering text, but NO voice commands work, it always defaults to doing a web search! What am I doing wrong? I'm running stock rooted 1.21 firmware, no modifications (apart for Jonas' keyboard).

Hmm....I think I may have just figured something out...can someone on here run a test for me? I need someone to check in People and see if their contacts are set to "Google" or "Phone". I have all but one of mine set to "Phone", but it seems that the one I have designated by accident as a Google contact is the only one that voice dialing works with...is this because, for example, Google actually searches your online contacts only, rather than the contacts saved exclusively on your phone?
Also, it still doesn't recognise the "Open" command...can someone also test that out for me?

I wish I could help you.. seems all my contacts are Google contacts. I even made a new one, and he's still a Google contact :/
And I never heard of Open X commands working. Open Mail, Calendar, Messaging all point me to a google search, so it understood what I said.

Is there No Voice Dialing on the Desire?

Anyone know how to voice dial on the desire, doesn't seem to be any button combination that allows voice dialing ?
Surely they have not missed this out ?
If they have missed it out any good apps like MSVC but on the android platform ?
Thanks
This is a good find! On the G1 you hold the call button, but I don't know how it works with no dedicated call button.
How about this?

$4, not bad if you really like it.
There is free version though:

Did see this but does not work on the desire. The first link is close but it appears there is no way to voice dial with a bluetooth headset. Really dont know why this has been missed out of any release as it a well used feature.
Thanks for the info anyway, i am sure eventually it will be included, maybe in another rom update.
Does it work if you press and hold the on-screen send key in the dialer app?
This thread on Android forums suggests the function was available on earlier HTC phones:

No that doesn't do anything. I've just tried the free version of ChoiceDialer and so far it seems very good. I am in a very quiet environment so I want to test it out in noisier areas before I decide whether to get the paid version.
Damn! That's disappointing! It's one of those features I never even bother to look for. These days I assume all phones would have this function.
Good to see there is an app that can do voicedialing. WOuld be interedted in hearing your thoughts after a couple of days use.
Get "Choice Dialer" from the Market. Great program, IMO.
Paid for the full version of Choice Dialler. Love it! I can say 'Play music from ..' and name one of my playlists or albums and it starts playing it. For me so far it worksabout 70 to 80% of the time and I don't have to use a US accent even though the developer confirmed to me it is designed for US voice recognition.
One bug for me though and that is I have to disable the ability to find individual song tracks. It says I have too many but at the moment I have only installed 367! The developer is trying to find the problem but it would be helpful to know if anyone else with the paid version has a similar problem. (Searching for music isn't available on the free version.)
if you have the desire you can go to the voice search app and say "dial so and so _________ insert name" that should work for the voice dial it is already preinstalled so you don't need to pay anything hope this helps you guys
New voice search does it. You have to select us accent in the settings tho. Hold search button, then say call name mobile/home. Done. Works with my eastern European accent LOL

But there is no way to do ir over BT
Just posting my general frustration with this.
Just got a HTC desire. My ancient Ericsson would do this and not a so called smart phone. Voice dial via Bluetooth is essential for in car calls.

I couldn't agree more. This is a high end device and this feature ought to be included and be 100% reliable. What were they thinking? Apple made the same mistake with the first iPhone, you'd think Google would have learnt from it. It's a pathetic omission.

Voice Search

Is the Desire missing Google voice search? I can't seem to find how to access / enable it at all. My girlfriends Motorola Dext has it, and it's quite nifty. Perhaps I'm just being blind, but I can't figure it out!!
Cheers,
Badger
I havent recieve my HTC desire yet, so havent had chance to play with it. Anyway I found the following:
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones/
Dont know if they work great or not. I believe I have read somewhere here, that it works ok.
It's not natively installed but that works very well. Keep the search button pressed and the voice prompt will show up and it recognizes most common words I've yet asked of it and additionally Google also then returns accurate results.

There we go. Perfect. THanks very much
Wanna shed some light on this whole V2T.
I sent an email to HTC. Got the following answer:
Thanks for your email.
No, the desire does not have VOice to text, but as you can see from that website, it is supposed to.
We are currently working with the developers to find out what happened. We don;t know why it was removed, or whether it was done purposefully or by accident, and investigating what we need to do to get it back.
I am sure it will be released as an update in the very near future, but at present it is missing from HTC SEnse.
I apologise for the mixup and can assure you that it is supposed to be there and we are working on it now.
Best regards,

Voice dialling on HTC Desire
Right then, this is what i need, can anyone point me in the right direction, and if you offer me advice id very much appreciate it being proven and tested to work as im new here and dont yet know my a from my elbow. I need an application that will allow me to speak a command such as dial number and then it will allow me to dial a number that is not stored anywhere on the phone. there is an app called choice dialler but its not good, in so far as it wont let me dial UK numbers and only stores 10 digits, which Uk numbers arent!!! I rather get the impression this app was designed for our american brethren as it accepts 911 but never heard of 999. When i try to call a uk number i try by sayiing "Dial, plus 44, followed by the number but it only works 1 time out of a hundred and i do mean that literally.. Anyone help me please, woud be appreciated, as am on the road 99 per cent of the day and cant have a handsfree kit installed as in mostly a different car every day....
I'm looking for a voice dialler aswell. I think it may need a seperate post to get some info.

Well actually, install the Voice Search apk and it gives you google search with voice but additionally, if you hold down the search hardware button it searches google as well without going to the app BUT if you hold it and say for example "call <persons name> mobile" it will actually call them. Is that not good enough?
On a side note, it recognises my voice great!

Voice frustration - help! FIXED

Help me guys, you're my only hope...
I had installed the HTC mod keyboard (v25) and Google search by voice.
And it used to be that the mike appeared in 3 Banana and on the keyboard and I could dictate text into the body of emails and as notes.
I then updated both the keyboard (to v27) and the voice app (to the one in the market) and now while I can google search by voice, I can no longer dictate.
I can get the mike to appear on the mod keyboard, but when I press it, nothing happens (well, it switches to settings after a second or two), in other words no Speak Now comes up allowing me to dictate. I can't get the mike to appear on 3 Banana at all - it used to be in the homescreen widget.
PS
I have uninstalled and re-installed both items, rolled back both version numbers - still no work
What am I doing wrong????? Settings????
I am SURE I am not imagining it - I did used to be able to dictate text for emails, notes, etc.
EDIT
Well, it works now after not working. No idea why, didn't change anything....

Help with final tweaking

Hi, I just wiped my Desire GSM, and installed CM7.1 for the first time. Mainly because I needed some more space on the phone, and I didn't need all these facebook, twitter and so on integration.
Until now I love it, but I still try to figure out the details. But I ran into to problems, that I haven't found a solution that satisfy me.
I use the phone to get mails and calendar appointments from our companys exchange server. On the stock HTC Sense ROM (2.2.2 if I recall), there was the opportunity to manually sync, so I wouldn't use the dataconnection all the time. I did this, with a shortcut on a homescreen. Isn't that possible with CM7.1, and if it is, how do I set it up?
The next thing is the phone app. On the stock HTC Sence ROM, I could search both by numbers or name, when I wanted to make a call. Just by typing in the searchbox. Now I have to switch contacts, press menu and then search, before I can type in a name and here I can't search by number. This means that I get 3 more clicks, and I still can't do the same as on the stock. Is there an phone app, that supports this feature?
Hi,
I do not know about your 1st question. But for the 2nd Question, i installed "TouchPal Dialer" which has the feature to search both based on names and numbers. Try it out.
I found Dialer One, which can what I want. But the first 2 times I opened it, it crashed, but only the first to times.
So I'm not totally hocked on it yet, so maybe I'll try TouchPad Dialer out

Is Google Now working right on my SGS 3?

From what I read, Now is supposed to do thing from voice. My understanding is it does it, but for me it does not actually comnplete it. I need to then click something for it to finish.
For example: "Text <a contact> This is a test", will put the message "This is a test" there and show the contact, but I must press the send. Same for email.
I suspect what I"ll here is the above is normal.
Another thing, I ask for a stock quote, and it gives it to me in Indian Rupies. Although if I ask "What is the stock price of <company> USA, it give it to me in dollars. I don't know why it defaults to India.
And I read somewhere that I could launch apps with Now by saying "Launch <app>". but that doesn't work, it just does a web search on the words "launch app"
I really would like to see the functionality that the OLD Microsoft Voice Command provided. Could launch apps, lplay music that is on the phone by genre, artist, or song (not have it just search online for it), and many more handy things. The voice dial in MVC worked very good, although the Google voice dialing is improving.
SGS3 has Google now?

For the contacts, they have to be stored on your phone and not from sync like facebook, etc... and I thought they had disabled launching apps with it because of a security issue.

Not by default. But there are custom ROMS that have it (my ROM listed in sig); and there is a mod for replacing S with it (I'm not sure, but may require Root access.)
yeah mine isnt working either. i dont know why. it was working this morning and now it keeps loading.
