[?] Home screen grid size change? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Devs, just throwing a question out there, is it possible to change the grid size on the home screens for the Evo? The reason I ask is that my old HTC hero had a 4x4- based grid for icons, same as ours does now, but I don't really need the icons to be larger than they were on the hero, I'd much rather be able to have a 5x5 or 6x6 grid for the homescreens. It would be great to be able to stick 36 icons on a single page instead of the normal 16.
I figure, we have all that glorious screen real-estate, but if everything is just a scaled-up version of a smaller screen, then its not really being used to its full potential, is it?
Just my thoughts, I have no idea how difficult this would be to implement, but I'd like to know if its possible.

Totally possible and relatively easy. I'm running 5x5 workspace and a 5 column launcher right now on my Hero. I posted a tutorial in the Cdma Hero section. I'll post a link in a second. BTW, I thought it would be a perfect mod for the Evo because of the huge screen.

I'd be willing to look into it too since I'm looking in to getting an Evo. Let me know.

Im sure it is very possible. ADW.Launcher allows me to 6x6 8x8 etc. still a little buggy tho.

well, I'm a relative noob, not a developer or coder, and starting to get traction on making themes, so this one is probably outside my knowledge range to do.
Do you guys think that it would be ROM- specific like alot of the themes I see around here?

It is definitely ROM specific. What ROM are you using?
EDIT: Scratch that, see you're running Senseless. The MOD I posted is really for Sense ROM's. If you're not going to run Sense, you should just DL and install ADW, like KShawn said. It does it on the fly and allows you to select widget cell sizes.

Please post questions in the q&a forum. That's what its for

If possible, do it for Fresh 0.3 please Thanks a lot in advnace!

Sorry Toast, my bad. It seemed more of a theme issue to me than a general question.

[Q] Can you theme HTC Sense with rooted EVO?

I really tried searching around, but I can't seem a straight answer. I just bought the Evo, my first Android phone coming from Windows Mobile and webOS.
I rooted my Evo using the Unrevoked software and instructions followed from this website. Can the Sense UI be skinned? I would like to explore this if it's possible with my current ROM. I remembered how easy it was to skin the TouchFlo 3D ui in Windows Mobile, but I don't think that's the same in this case.
I tried different ROMS, but they seem to strip a lot of the software that I don't mind having. I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me into the right direction.
Thanks again!
Yup, you can.
Take an HTC Sense rom you want to theme and goto system/framework/htc.resources.apk
I've been working on this for a little bit and it appears that the framework icons(ie notification bar icons, buttons, etc) are split between the two.
Hope this helps

Take a look at my ROM probably not themed as much as you would like but its a start.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=767813
Take a look into Metamorph, that's probably the easiest way, and right up your alley for what you want to do. Themeing is time-consuming and labor intensive, no matter what method you use to do it (especially if you start messing with the infamous .9.png's) so don't get too frustrated.
Search for the threads about MM and the .9's and you'll be on your way.

[Q] [MOD] Running Sense Rom w/ 3 Home Screens

I happen to be one of those rooters who still enjoys the Sense UI over an AOSP base.
However, I was wondering if there was a way to lower the amount of home screens I have. My daily is Myn's RLS4 and with Sense I find myself only really using 3-5 home screens and basically fill the other 2 with widgets just so they are not blank. I wouldn't mind them if I have to, but it's possible my phone would run a little quicker and save some battery if I were able to limit the amount of home screens and focus on using the apps for the info when I need it rather than have the widgets constantly running.
I'm not sure if there is a way to integrate a Miui or ADW/Launcher Pro method of controlling how many screens we have, but I think it's not far out of the ballpark.
I searched through the forums for about an hour looking for any info, but didn't find anything. Please post a link if this has been discussed already.
haha bump. i would like to know that aswell. there are times that i miss the clouds fly by lol.

Seriously though, when I first got the Evo, I was like yeah seven screens your other phones suck. Now I just want 3, maybe 5.

For the clouds just install "widgetlocker" it has the option
Hey bud not sure if you noticed, but this is not the Q&A section. Questions are to be asked in Q&A.
....really you cant change that in the sense options somewhere? Just another reason Sense is lame, imo.
LauncherProPlus, FTW!!! I got one homescreen, and 15 icons in my dock, not to mention swype gestures, and running CM6 so i have lockscreen gestures as well...
My Evo > Sense UI

Hey buddy, this is a development question. It was more of a suggestion of an idea that I had not seen before more than a question about something that exists.
The community is about making better devices, apps, etc. for all and there's no need to waste your time posting a reply about being in the wrong section. If it is violating anything, the mods can move it.
Moved to Q&A as this is a [Q]. The Android Development threads are for software coding/releases.
Bump. Nothing on this yet?
Any info would be nice.
Thanks

Would love some guidance on this, hoping the # of homescreens config is held in a file somewhere and someone with a rooted phone can edit it?

[REQ] Port of WhiteMochi to Froyo/ACS.

My first post...been lurking around for a while.
I feel like this would probably be pretty simple for someone who knew more about what to do.
I tried flashing the zip, then tried using reframe.sh (through android terminal emulator) to reboot into just the framework, then tried editing the framework-res.apk by adding files and moving files to match other Froyo framework-res.apk files...but all of those things failed.
I didn't really anticipate my actions would have the desired effect, but I was trying.
I don't know what would have to be done. If it's simple and someone would be willing to update this for Froyo, I'd appreciate it. I think some others would as well.
In addition, if anyone could point me in the direction of some learning material for this kind of stuff, not just how to theme but also maybe some development guides for beginners, I would appreciate that as well.
Then I could just do this type of thing myself in the future.
Here's the link to an xda thread with WhiteMochi v0.003: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843204
Thanks in advance.
Think alot of themers on the Epic prolly got their start here using Dream's guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821638
Good luck man!
I'll do it.
Do you want the clear notication bar or the solid one?
I would like the solid one, if you could. Thanks a ton.
And thanks to both of you. Definitely gonna check out that guide.

Haha I didn't. But a good guide never hurts.
Do you want the lockmod installed along side?
What exactly do you mean by the lockmod?
My current rom uses the AOSP lockscreen by default so it shouldn't be an issue, right?

I meant maddoggins lockmod for EC05. It includes 6 different locks.
Oh, no. I tried to install it but was having issues getting it to work.
The one straight from the lockmod thread didn't work (FC when trying to view Lockscreen Settings), I found a working version in the framework included with the Nebula rom/theme but didn't like the status bar.
I was under the impression the WhiteMochi just used the AOSP, or were you asking for another reason?

Haha I can make you a version of nebula with a different colored notification bar if you'd like.
I'm sure it uses the AOSP lock. I was just asking if you wanted me to implement the 6 lock.
If you could get the 6lock in with the Mochi that'd be sweet, but it's not necessary for me.
Would be a huge plus though, hahah.
Still looking for anyone willing to possibly port this over to Froyo/SRF.
I'm mainly just looking for a white status bar without a gaudy notification pulldown and attractive icons.
I tried FrostPort v1.2 but personally disliked the status bar icons (all of them).
I noticed that the Galaxy Prevail (the new prepaid Boost Android phone) has a nice white framework, so even a port of that would be killer.
I read up on theming and I have a basic understanding of what to do, it doesn't seem overly difficult. Only issue with me is that I work 5-6 days a week long hours so I don't always have time to devote to studying up/getting in practice...especially as of late.
I have two days off coming up which I'll most likely wind up devoting the bulk of to learning how to theme (devoted my last two days off to my phone as well...don't know how to feel about that).
In the meantime, however...once again...if anyone is up to the task, have at it. I would appreciate it, and I know others would too.
I'd like to see this theme... Where can I see screen shots of the original theme? I have no knowledge of Android Theming or anything. But if there's a pretty good guide, and by pretty good I mean something that will SHOW me how to do it, then I could give it a try. But I'm more visual so a walk through that's text only won't help.
This seems like its AOSP straight to the bone seriously just use the AOSP ROM, whats honestly different?
When trying to flash it via Clockwork it says "Amend script was disabled in this version" or some such thing, and then says "Installation Aborted".
Using reframe.sh causes the phone to not boot (sticks on boot anim).

[REQ] Star trek theme...

Wondering if anyone has any info. I'm looking for a star trek look/feel but more like the actual interface they use on the show. Not just a wallpaper and some colors...
More like a launcher.
But here's what I've found so far. A good font goes a long way.
I was using fluxed/adw theme, adw ex with a bunch of setting tweaks and metamorphed theme, then blew it up with a kernal flash, bad nandroid.
But alas with a dead pc and nothing but a netbook not much I can modify other than what already exists.
See pics for inspiring...
Any ideas? Not looking for free labor, just ideas... ie: star trek font prolly not practical...

The ones I've tried were not so great. Found one called the boldly go, but on small stuff it was no good. many thanks if yours will work!

Hmmm...I'd be interested in something like that too. Have you tried requesting this in the Themes sub-forum? A lot of themers spend all their time there instead of in Q&A.

Someone requested it a couple weeks ago, and DreamsForgotten and Shane talked about it and said it would be extremely difficult to attempt.
If anyone were to attempt it, it would have to be very small steps to start with. Maybe the Starfleet logo for the vertical unlock icon, and the Enterprise for horizontal. A themed Swype would be doable. And maybe the little spinning hub things on the engines as loading icons. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Yes, extremely difficult. Why we say that is because you will have to create lots of images out side of just editing the images in the apk (I would think this would be better done as a launcher than a framework theme), then layering the buttons, text, and other images within the xml, as well as repositioning all of it. The last issue is the 4x4 grid that the phone uses. Those I don't see that as a deal breaker, it is another obstacle.

That's kinda what I thought... launcher rather than framework hack. Perhaps butchering adw or something.
The pulldown animations really have potential too... something simple like glowing conduits that are very opaque and dark...
And it might not be so difficult to rob some architecture from a winblows theme as the huge icon widgets would make a better base. Widgets may be a direction to take. I have a copy of creative suite 2 on my mac but the hdd is soooo slow I hate using it. I could do some graphic work. Anyone got any links of a video showing the computer in action on a screen that would be a cool port? I've googled youtube to little avail...

Creating Icons

Hello there,
Like title suggests, I want to creat my own icons to fit certain themes/wallpapers. I can make icons in Photoshop, so that's no problem, thing is, I have no idea how to get them on my phone, and can't really find much information about it.
If someone could please kindly point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
There's no short answer really. I guess the easiest way would be to use something like nova launcher that allows you to long press and change the icons 1 at a time. If you want to get into theming whole swaths of your icons at once, I've seen how-to's here on theming roms etc...
Hmm, thanks, better than nothing by far
Defenately enough to keep me going for a while to figure out if I really want to do this and if I'm any good at it.
Thanks

Well using Nova launcher is the best way to go at it. You can change the original icons from the standard apps by replacing them in their apks, but that will take some more time^^
