Video recording - fps - Desire General

Hi
Had a search and couldn't find an answer so here I go.
I believe that the desire records at 15 fps which leads to choppy recordings vs my iPhone 3gs. I was wondering, is there a hack to increase the fps beyond what it currently sits at?
Thanks

Yes, Froyo. Should add 720p recording at min 20 FPS.

Does the eventual update also add better sound quality to video recordings?
I say AMR 8000khz codec is worse then my now defunct N73....

+1 I'd rather see a steady 30fps + great audio quality 480p video, than crappy 720p.

I really don't see why HTC chose to only encode audio with the AMR-codec at such low quality... Is the microphone of such poor quality that they "hide" it using this codec?
Anyone tried recording sound using some another software?

Try the built in Voice Recorder?

It's the same crappy quality...

Then using "other software" will only serve to mask it, if anything.

Most likely, almost make me wonder why not to let go S.Jobs dictatorship when i look this video what is claimed to be shooted in iphone4 (sorry my swearing) http://cl.ly/1P50. Almost.

What would your guys recommend for playing .avi videos on the Desire? There are so many to choose from. Act 1 is good? It's not free

The beta RockPlayer is the best AVI player we currently have. However, which AVI it plays depends on that vids properties (like format).
Check the themes and apps section under titles like 'DivX/XviD player'.
Act 1 is excellent for many other vids, like H.264.

I can't link or search threads through the phone app but this has been discussed extensively before. You can record much higher quality audio using other apps. Mainly those saving in MP3, PCM, MP4 and WAV. I'm not sure how they do it though.
For simple, quick, voice recording I use Virtual Recorder the most.

i absolutely agree with you....i want a super smooth recording and playback at the 480p size and not more...if the quality of this is good then you can upscale it with conversion...but if it's crappy high resolution then even if you downgrade it it won't be very smooth

You can already see what the unofficial, hacked HD recording is like, i.e. http://db.tt/0Ngrnd

As has been discussed a few times priorly, the current vid recording FPS have been observed to fluctuate between ~3-28 based on the ambient light levels, level of motion in the footage and the speed of the cam movement. The current recording can be much improved over but these factors contribute to some hard fundamental limitations.

HTC Desire Video Quality and Compression

Hey there,
In my experience, the Desire compresses the hell out of all recorded video, which makes it blurry. My girlfriend ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago, I recorded parts of it but people's faces looked like they had been blurred out digitally, or as taken from a Japanese 00's horror-flick.
I have the highest quality setting activated, as well as the MPEG4 encoding type selected. Still the Desire saves videos in the outdated .3GP-format that I had on my Sony Ericsson's six years ago, instead of as .MP4.
The file size of one minute of recorded video is about half the size of the same recording on my Nokia N97, and unfortunately, the quality is about half as well.
Is it just me, or does the Desire compress video way too hard? And why aren't they saved as .MP4 when the MPEG4 setting is on? Is there a tweak to decrease the compression ratio?
Thanks!

Neither .3GP or .MP4 are video formats - they are container formats (see here).
If you select MPEG4, it will be saving as MPEG4 within the 3GP container.
As to the actual recorded quality, I can't really comment as on the few occasions I've used it to record video, it looks ok to me.

Dave

Intriguing, I did not know that Thanks. Still bummed about the video quality, though. There ought to be a setting for those who prioritize quality and not small files.

We're supposed to be getting an update to support recording at 720p (as well as DivX). HTC announced this before the Desire had shipped, but has been curiously silent on the matter since then.
I did tweet @HTC about the lack of a DivX update, but @HTC only wants to respond to trivial nonsense it seems.
Regards,
Dave
Yeah I noticed they are quiet on that at the moment.
I wonder if they are planning it with the 2.2 update maybe?
hmm, I got a feeling they have trashed the 720p video quality update.
it has been silence about it for a long time:\
Froyo 2.2 will have the 720 option it was mentioned in the detailed Google IO paper. Along with better gmail. End calls with the power buttons. And app updates upposed to OS revisions.
The max option records at 2Mbps. You can get decent quality from that, most YouTube vids are far far lower. The framerate however differs depending on the ambient light but anything plus 15ish looks fine.

Is there even a "max" option for the video camera? If so, where is it located? I can only find a quality setting for the still camera. A 40 second video clip recorded with my HTC Desire is approx. 10MB. That's very far from 2 MB per second?

It's 2 Mbit /s (Mega bit), not MB (Mega Byte).
2mbps is not 2MB per second
its more like 256KB per second in the terms you're using

i use format factory free to download and only program which rips bluray rips .mkv to make it work for htc desire. You can choose from so many profile and test the settings which suits best to your mobile i believe res setting for htc desire are 400 by 800. i can send you setting i use. I ripped avatar blueray rip 8gb to 745mb with awesome quality. Give it a go you wont be disapointed and it supports subs. it basically supports all formats.
i just used MEGUI and it's iphone preset but left the res as 800xwhatever. AAC audio.
worked fine.
Format Factory sounds great with a whole bunch of the 23 reviews saying it has a trojan in the installer and also automatically installs the Ask Toolbar!
i myself megui for ripping but format factory is way easy to use. Megui is bit complicated program i do use it for ripping you can crop colour correction etc but megui takes longer to rip. i have found format factory to rip 720p rips perfect for my nokia n97 mini and desire.

You can use a free program called Mediainfo, take a few clips with diffrent settings and see the codec and bitrate.

I believe it was back when the Desire was the Bravo - there was alot of talk of 720p recording and the fact the hardware supports it

Why is the 720P recording always come out choppy with artifacts?!!?!

Seriously every single video I record comes out with artifacts and choppy/freezing. What in the world is happening. I can't be the only one? Fix for this!!? So disappointing, sigh
Try on CM6. HTC sucks at coding.
They set a low bit rate in the video with high compression. CM has normal ones, plus they're working on better audio.

Damn out of all the times I've flashed CM6 I've never tried the HD recording! This might be the definite deal breaker for me for Sense Roms.
Yeah. It looks really nice on CM6. >_<
I had the same issue with 2.1 and 2.2. I noticed that when I played the video for a second time it would play smooth (maybe it got cached). I just changed the SD card to a Ridata class 6 and now videos always play OK.

Yeah but it also plays back choppy on my computer when I transfer the file over or if I upload it to YouTube or anywhere else. I am going to try CM6 now and see what kind of results I get.
I'll admit I haven't tried 720P recording on CM6 in a few weeks but under RC1 the issue I was having was that the video and audio would lose sync...I took a recording of my dog barking at my cat and the video of the bark was showing before the bark sound. I guess I should try it on the nightly I'm running now and see how it is.

As stated in the title I need short video file download from those running on jpk. 1280 by 720. Daytime nighttime does not matter. Just playing around with codecs.
here you go
thanks a lot.
good to know that froyo brings mp4 with aac instead of eclair crappy 3gpp with amr. should be better for the concerts and loud environments now.
lol...When i first saw the video i laughed, i didnt read wat the op said, just the title...rofl
@idan - there is no significat difference with aac audio, the sound is still crappy when you record a concert.

Damn audio, totally ruins the recording/video experience with this phone...
It still is a great improvement, now I can just make a video, start AllShare and immidiately see the result on the big screen using my PS3. I always thought it was a shame to use this stupid 3GP container so I have to remux all the videos on my PC.
As for the sound: does the phone record from headset if connected? If yes, I guess this could be exploited to use a better microphone. The inbuilt one is meant for the phone function, obviously, and they just didn't add another for noise cancellation and video recording.

Fantastic. Now all we need is touch-to-focus in video mode.
another nice thing would be to be able to change the recording sound volume or some thingy that corrects its selve when you record loud things.

It is possible to record from headset but sound is still crappy. It's software problem.
The problem is with the mic itself, it is very sensitive, it would be great if there was an app that could monitor the input level of the mic and adjust de volume when its lower or higher than a certain threshold level, if not automatic at least manually.
Some kind of mic equalizer?
my bad it was always aac audio and not amr. by mistake i compared with old nexus video lol. only wrapper changed to mp4.

[Q] Xperia PLAY record HD video?

Xperia PLAY have got 1Ghz CPU, and 5mpx Camera. This hardwares enough to the recorded of HD vido? Or not?
Is the solution of this possible?
(Sorry my bad Englis)
Should be!
One of Sony's recent updates gave you the 720p camera. if your on a custom rom i bet you can find the apk somewhere.
This was one of the early updates. Though it does not specifie it's recording in HD but really it records at 720P when the best quality is chosen in the options. However I personally think that the latest Cyanogenmod 7 video recording was remarkable. Best quality ever seen so far.

What? Really? It's pretty crap if you ask me. It records at 800x480 and the video usually has constant moments of extreme stutter.
What do you like about it? Is there any way to get 720p on CM7?

Are you sure? I've been using the latest CM7 FXP builds every time they're released and I've even tried some CM7 nightlies from the CyanogenMod site.
None of them, including FXP123, do 720p recording. Perhaps you're mistaken? Or have I missed something?
Yes I'm fairly certein. I vivdly remember I was shocked by the performance of the video camera. Flash the latets CM7 and start filming with the highest values in the settings. Then see the video on your computer. Even if he screen size is not 720x900 the video quality most definitly is HD

Any fix or alternative for Audio in Camcorder?

I find the HTC Droid Incredible Camcorder app decent to record on, and wouldn't mind it HAD IT BEEN they didn't make the audio recording horrible.
It records at a 8Khz AMR format........any solution or alternative to this?
I've tried lgCamera, but it freezes / skips / lags to much and causes the audio to desync.

Did you try Videocam Illusions? That will let you set the audio much higher, though you will lose some video quality as compared to the stock camcorder.

lgCamera has 720p, it just skips a little bit and that desyncs audio. Any ported APPs or something I could use from like a different phone or something?
