Why Should I root my phone?

What can I do with recovery?
With recovery you can principally flash cooked roms, but also other things like make nandroid backups (Internal memory backups), partition your sdcard, fix problems etc...
If you want root there are 2 methods:
First Method
Is very simple, just download and install InstantRoot.apk (attached)
To install this from sdcard you need a file explorer like ASTRO
After the install a notify that says root access gained should appear, if not try second method
Second Method
This will install also recovery
1. Enable Debug USB from Settings->Applications
2. Download flashrec and install it with file manager like ASTRO
3. Download Amon_RA's recovery and put it in your sdcard
4. Run flashrec and tap Backup Recovery
5. Tap in the textbox and write this path:

/sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-vx.x.x.img
At moment of writing last version is 1.5.2, so the path should be

/sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img
6. Tap Download then flash recoery
7. If you get an error retry from step 3, else continue
8. Turn off your phone and reboot it keeping pressed Home button, recovery should start
9. Connect your phone via usb
10. Download Android SDK and extract all in the same folder
11. Download this and extract it in your sdk/tools folder
12. Open cmd (if you are on windows, if you are on a mac or on linux open terminal) and move to sdk/tools folder using this command

13. Give this commands in order
On windows:

adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/
adb shell umount /system
adb shell reboot
On linux/mac

14. Now you have root access on your phone
If you want recovery:
Just follow root's second method to the step 7
Flashing Custom roms using recovery:
Custom roms are in Zip format, to flash it is really easy once you have recovery.
Once downloaded a rom put it in your sdcard root, then reboot into recovery (Keep home button pressed while turning on your phone)
Now make a wipe going to Wipe->Wipe data, then come back to main menu and go to Flash zip from sd card, select your zip and you're done

nandroid backup is recommeded when you install a new rom, so you can always back to your original/past rom
So i root with this guide, then nandroid and then i can flash the new rom?

No, only that you can't flash a GSM radio on a CDMA phone and back, if you do this you'll brick your phone

You can install radio whenever you want, it's flashed in another nand partition

1-Do you need to follow step 8-12 to get root and flash rom`s or is the android sdk and superuser only if you want to develope yourself?
2- If ypu do this and after want back to stock rom . As far as i`ve read it`s as easy as just flashing from HTC website and you`re back ? Won`t recovery still be left on your phone?

1. Steps from 8 to 12 are only to get root access on stock rom, if you want to change rom you don't need to make those steps
2. To get back to stock rom just flash official update, as far as i know recovery will be deleted

Please could someone tell me, if using the first method the InstantRoot.apk. Will this wipe the current ROM/data/apps etc from the phone or will it just enable Root privilages and leave everything else the same?

It just roots your phone and leaves everything in tact, just did it now.
The guide is not clear on how to flash the rom though. Because it says "If you want recovery" I don't want recovery I just want to flash. I have root now what's next? In simple steps, no recovery required just want CKDroid.

You need recovery to flash roms, it's written on the start of the first post
[Update 12/23] For those of you unable to install the new system update, I've found a solution -- scroll down to the update! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY OCCUR!
So I figured I'd at least get things started - Credit goes to whomever first tried z4root on their Droid Pro - and to mahst687 for the deodexing.
Lets Begin!

#1 Root:
As seen on numerous android sites already, root is obtainable via z4root in the market. It may not work the first, second, or even third time -- just keep trying, it works I promise.
#2 Bootstrap and Clockwork Recovery
Download and install 'Rom Manager' from the Market. Once installed flash the Droid2 Clockwork Recovery. After flashing, obtain the Droid2 Bootstrapper and install it. Confirm Clockwork Recovery works by booting to recovery via Bootstrap.
#2 Deodex:
Download Android SDK for ADB, as well as the Motorola ADB Drivers posted above. Second, download xUltimate - also posted above. Once everything is downloaded and installed we're ready to begin.
1. Run Main in the xUltimate package - if the ADB drivers installed successfully you should be greeted with a menu containing several options - great!
2. Next run option 1.
3. Run option 2.
3. Run option 3 - sit back and relax for a bit
4. Once option 3 is done doing its thing, navigate to the xUltimate folder, more specifically the "origi_frame", and delete guava.odex
5. Run option 4 - it'll be a short wait
6. Exit the xUltimate
7. Enable USB Mass Storage on the phone and transfer both "done_app", and "done_frame" to the ROOT of the SD card.
8. Once both folders have transferred disable USB Storage, but keep the phone plugged in via USB.
9. Open up a command prompt and browse to the android SDK Tools folder (or where ever your ADB executable is located).
10. Enter the following commands:

cp /sdcard/done_app/* /system/app/
cp /sdcard/done_frame/* /system/framework/

reboot
11. If all went well your phone should reboot - which may take a few minutes. Enjoy!

For those of you unable to get the new Droid Pro OTA working I have found a solution! You will need:
1)Root
2)Clockwork Recovery
3)System.img from update
4)Current Nandroid backup of your phone
5)ADB drivers and ASDK
So lets begin.
1)Boot into Clockwork recovery and create a backup of your phone.
2)Once complete, mount the phone as USB storage and pull the system.img file from the nandroid backup folder, as well as the nandroid.md5 (KEEP THESE FILES SAFE!!!!!)
3)Obtain the system.img file from here (Compliments of whoopsiedaisy).
4)Replace the system.img file in the Nandroid backup folder on your PHONE.
5)ADB into your phone (preferably still in recovery) and do the following:

# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-xx-xx.xx.xx.xx
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
6)If all goes will it should create a new MD5 checksum file utilizing the new system.img
7)Go to the 'backup and restore' menu in Clockwork, and select 'Advanced Restore'
8)Select the correct nandroid backup folder where the new system.img file is located, and then select 'Restore System'
9)Assuming all goes well, go to Settings, About and check your new system version!

Not at all. Simply run z4 if all you require is root access (and a host of apps like Wireless Tether, DroCap, Titanium Backup ...)
Can you please post the quickoffice apk from the Dpro so I can put on an DX? Same would go for the software that allows me to Invite attendees to meetings using GAL. It be copasetic if you can.

I downloaded everything you said and i started my deodex but when i select option 3 in main it tells me "error no odex file" have i done something wrong please advise

Also, what is the deodex for? I want to root my phone to install the apps I want and I want wifi tether. Do I need it?
Also, I really want to understand what is going on under the hood, but I don't know where to start. Is there a 'for dummies' tutorial somewhere that I can go to to start understanding what all of this stuff is, so I can make informed decisions for myself about what I want instead of begging for help on internet forums? Yes, Z4Root app allows you to root, re-root, and UNroot.
I see no uproot button on the screen. Only a root button

You'll only see the unroot button once you've rooted. Otherwise, it will first show only the "root" option.

I was rooted. I had titanium installed and superuser. Z4 ran fine but I had an old version of it. I dont know if that matters but thats all I did. I downloaded the 1.3 version and I now have the unroot button. On the old version there was no option for temp root either. Just root. On the version I have now there is a temp root and perm root button.
Would just like to let people know that your method for "updating" via nandroid backup would not work for me. Followed all the instructions to the letter and during the advanced restore I continually received md5sum mismatch errors.
So I took the chance and updated through the OTA update, it installed fine but lost root. Ran z4root (twice) and gained root access again .
Looking forward to some real custom daily driver roms for this guy.

Kinda new to the whole rooting thing, just got a new Pro and rooted successfully with z4root, got rid of bloatware and installed titanium backup, wifi tether, etc. Am I correct in reading your post that I can unroot, OTA update, and re-root again? If so, will I have to uninstall bloatware again, or reinstall root apps? Or any other repeats? Any danger in doing this?

No need to un-root. This update is for the system portion only and does not touch the userdata. I simply went ahead on the rooted phone, let the OTA update download and install. In doing so lost root, but had no trouble gaining root access again via z4root. Did not have to re-remove any of the bloatware, at least if I remember correctly. Root apps will not need to be reinstalled but you may need to re-give them permission for root access. No danger that I have noticed or can think of.
For anyone doing the update the android method....
For it to work
You must do the adb "new" md5 creation portion with your phone in clockwork recovery for it to work and to not receive the mismatch error...
To do this, reboot recovery... then plug in usb from your computer... during the phone boot into recovery you should hear the alert from your computer that something from usb was plugged in. Finally, use the mount option in recovery to mount sd card to be able to transfer the .img file over to the correct directory then unmount sd card and do the adb commands in terminal window...
I had the same mismatch errors using my windows 7 machine and creating the md5 with android booted

Suggest you google gingerbreak to root your phone, then downgrade your phone to an earlier version so you can S-Off and you can then install custom ROMs.

There's not much to get your berries shaking, it's just the radio replacement you should be careful with.
First thing you should do is backup your device with either Titanium or ClockworkMod, though you probably need to root in order to do this, and then anything you might do, you can always revert back to what you had.
When you get to replacing the radio version, read instructions extra careful and be sure to do everything by the book (guide) and to check the checksum on the downloaded files. This could brick your device so no extra precaution is unnecessary..

2. Once ive downgraded to this, must i perform a ROOT again to be able to flash a new rom?

4. on the 1.32xxx version do I root and use cwm 2 or 3 and just flash the above rom?

so installed and did gingerbreak, it said didnt work, but asked if i would allow super user permissions to which i said yes.
I opened up a cmd and went to downgrade folder ie; c:\users\ajay\desktop\downgrade
this is where the .zip for 1.36.405.6 is kept.
typed in that code adb etc.... and it said unrecognised command batch etc...
Could someone help us out alittle?

HOWTO FLASH CUSTOM ROM ONTO GB DEVICE
Downgrade First!
You might need to format your SD card first before installing Gingerbreak, make a backup of your SD card by copying the files to a safe
place on your PC and then goto Settings - SD and Phone Storage - Click Umount SD card - Click Erase SD card - Click Mount SD card after erasing and formating the card has been
completed.
Gingerbreak help thread for problems:

1. Download Gingerbreak from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=578771&d=1303829207 and install it. Then tap root button.
2. You might get force close errors, just click the force close button and let Gingerbreak do it's job
3. Gingerbreak will in the end, usually say that something went wrong that you need to reboot etc, don't reboot! Just leave it open in your phone, and connect your phone to a PC. Charge only, USB Debugging enabled!
4. Download Android Terminal from the Market and after you installed it you can check if you are rooted, by typing su in the terminal, accept the Superuser request if it shows up and Press "Allow", if you get a "#" you are rooted and the Gingerbreak hack worked.
5. Now open up a terminal window(cmd) on your PC and go to the Downgrade folder on your PC where you downloaded the ADB files from at http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=483902&d=1294492245 , execute the following commands:
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell
su
!Now allow SuperUser in phone when dialog comes up!
If you got "#" in the result, you have temporary root! Proceed with commands:
Now type in terminal:
cd /data/local/tmp
./misc_version -s 1.31.405.6
1. Close the terminal window on your PC and set USB connection to disk drive in your phone and download PD98IMG.zip from http://www.multiupload.com/BTJ8KY0KH9 and place it on your SD card, don't extract the zip file!! Do not put the file into a folder of any kind on your SD card.
PLEASE NOTE!! If you can't set USB connection to disk drive you have to reboot the DHD, now you will be able to set USB connection to disk drive and transfer PD98IMG.zip file to SD from your PC.
2. Reboot while holding volume down, it will go to the Bootloader
3. Follow the instructions and Press "Yes" when it asks you if you want to flash PD98IMG.zip (start the update)
4. Done and reboot.
5. Proceed below with the two S-OFF methods and remove the PD98IMG.zip from your SD.
RADIO S-OFF
1. Install and download latest Visionary r14 from http://www.mediafire.com/?xhwc5m7f273l7b2
2. Open Visionary and tap temproot, then attempt permroot now. Your device will reboot.
3. Connect your phone to a computer (make sure you have USB Debugging enabled, Connect charge only!
4. Extract the Radio S-OFF zip file you dowloaded into a folder on your computer from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
5. Open my "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe" (Windows 7, right click & run as Administrator).
Choose the first option (RADIO S-OFF, Super-CID and Sim Unlock)
Click "Do it". There may be a SuperUser request on your phone, allow it.
6. Done.
ENG S-OFF(You need this enabled to be able to flash RADIO.IMG later)
1. Download and Extract the eng s-off zip file into a folder on your computer from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
2. Connect the phone to your computer in "Charge only" mode
3. Run "Desire HD easy s-off.exe" from the extracted folder
4. Click "I have RADIO S-OFF" (as you already done RADIO S-OFF earlier), IMPORTANT!
5. Click in "S-OFF" it
6. Your phone is now ENG S-OFF
7. Done
Flashing your ROM
1. Connect your phone using "Disk drive" to the computer.
2. Copy both your full-wipe-1-3.zip from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15057375/mero01-xda/Wipe/FULL-WIPE-1.3.zip and your CUSTOM ROM zip file to your SD Card
3. Check again that both files are on your SD card because once you full wipe, you won't have a ROM anymore.
4. Disconnect your phone from your computer
5. Install and open Rom Manager from the market
6. Tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and download version 3.0.2.6
7. Wait for it to download (You need a wi-fi or data connection)
8. After it is done press "Reboot into recovery"
9. If you get an icon with a phone and an exclamation mark in a triangle, remove the battery from your phone, reboot and then flash the clockworkmod recovery again
10. Once you are in the clockwork mod recovery, you may use the volume keys as directional keys (up and down) and the power button may be used as Enter.
11. I recommend you do a nandroid back-up. You must have at least 1 gb of free space.
12. Goto Backup and Restore and make a backup of current ROM if something would fail during flash.
13. Select "Install Zip from sdcard"
14. Select "Choose zip from sdcard"
15. Select full-wipe-1-3.zip (It's right under those folders)
16. Confirm by selecting the Yes option in between those "NO"s
17. Wait for it to finish
18. DO NOT REBOOT!!! In case you were not aware, you now have no rom installed
19. Once again select "Install Zip from sdcard"
20. Select "Choose zip from sdcard"
21. Select your rom zip file
22. Confirm your selection (just like with the wipe)
23. Wait for it to finish
24. Please reboot from the recovery menu and flash nothing else before you have rebooted.
Flash recommended Radio for your custom ROM:
1. Download "Radio Flash.zip" from http://www.mediafire.com/?b172o4ftj1mcpn1 and extract it contents on your PC.
2. Put the radio.img file you downloaded for your custom ROM and put it in the same folder as you extracted the "Radio flash.zip" file to.
3. Make sure USB debugging is enabled in your Desire HD before proceeding.
4. Connect your DHD to your PC with the USB cable and make sure you select USB Charge Only!
5. Now goto the Radio flash folder on your PC and execute "Start here.exe"
6. In the terminal window that comes up you will type:
adb reboot bootloader
Your DHD now goes into Bootloader state, when it is in bootloader state you will type:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
When the terminal says that the process is done you will type:
fastboot reboot
7. Now the DHD reboots and everything is done.
!!GOOD TO KNOW!!
TESTING BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING
Testing Root
1. Download Android Terminal Emulator from the Market
2. Run it and type in "su"
3. Accept the Superuser request if it comes
4. A "#" should appear if nothing is wrong with your root!
Testing Eng S-off and Radio S-OFF
1. Power Down Your Device
2. Go to Bootloader
3. If it says Ace PVT ENG S-OFF your phone is ENG S-OFF.
4. use Volume down to get to system info and tap power button to select
5. check CID for CID-11111111 (if you have this all is done 100%)
6. Reboot
Checking the device state:
1. Go to the bootloader (turn fastboot off, turn off phone, hold vol- and power)
2. If it says ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF in the first line, your device is Radio S-OFF
3. If it says ACE PVT ENG S-OFF, you have ENG S-OFF, go to System info
4. If system info CID is 11111111, your device is SuperCID5.
5. And if you can verify either Radio S-OFF or SuperCID (and you did both), it worked fine and you have both of them
6. You can check your original CID by going to radio tool folder with cmd and typing: "adb shell getprop ro.cid"
To go back to RADIO S-ON:(If you want to go back to RUU stock ROM again)
1. Flash stock ROM (RUU)
2. Temproot using Visionary

For recommended Radio look into the thread of the custom ROM you will flash, it will say what radio they recommend to their ROM

You need to type adb in the folder you have adb.
If you have adb.exe in folder c:\Downgrade you must go to that folder first and the type adb.

Followed the codes and got superuser access.
I had formatted my sd card prior to doing this btw
I closed the terminal and went to change usb from charge to disk drive and the option had gone. took it out and reinserted and still it wouldnt find it for me to put .zip file on???
It would not show my sd card was there until i re booted?
Its a shame we cant just temproot it with gingerbreak and flash the rooted GB 2.3 leedroid, but then i guess this is where all this -s off stuff comes in right?
I havent got a clue now let alone to begin with lol.
Lads I think i give up =( . Thanks for all the help and advise and patience but your dealing with abit of a numpty here and we could be here a very very long time.
I appreciate all the help & Ill keep my eyes open if a way comes out to permroot 2.3 without downgrading etc...

Same thing happened me, i had to reboot to make SD card show up again, but that is no problem as you have already changed misc_version with adb, you can now just put the PD98 file to the SD card and reboot and flash from bootloader.
Easy.

My original instructions based on alvaroag's work can be found below, and the instructions via my instructions the Xperia Pro CWM Recovery method can be found on post 50 of this thread.
It's important to note that DooMLorD's tool only works for Windows. You can still use our original method in this post if you're running Linux.
We finally have a method to root the Xperia Pro MK16a (and PROBABLY MK16i) thanks to XDA Member alvaroag!!
This is his method, with the instructions modified by myself for ease of use.
What you need before you begin:
1. A rock hard stomach, because should the very unlikely happen and this brick/damage your phone in some way, I’m not responsible
2. An Unlocked Bootloader
NOTE: Sony offers a totally free, official, and simple method to unlock your bootloader here: http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/
Should that not work for you, your phone is probably SIM locked from your carrier (FIDO for example does that). You'll need to get the bootloader unlocked remotely from someone who has SETool and the appropriate security USB dongle. THIS COSTS MONEY, as SETool requires that user to pay per use.

Alejandrissimo was awesome at helping me through it.
3. On the phone itself navigate to the following locations:
a. Settings - applications – Make sure Unknown Sources (first option) is checked
b. Settings – applications – development – Make sure USB Debugging is checked
4. Download this archive. It contains all the files and drivers you will need:

Instructions:
1. Extract the archive you downloaded to a folder on your computer. Where doesn’t matter as long as you remember where it is.
2. Navigate to the folder ADB For Dummies (thanks to VanillaTbone for his guide) and install ADB for Dummies.exe
a. This will create a new folder on your C: drive called “android-sdk-windows”
3. Take the file “xperia_pro_root.zip” from the archive you downloaded and extract the contents to C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools\
4. Power off the phone and make sure it’s not plugged into anything.
5. Hold down the MENU button and connect the USB cable. A blue light will appear. If a blue light does NOT appear, then your phone can't get into FastBoot, and probably still has the bootloader locked.
a. If Windows asks you to install the drivers, install the driver from the folder “Fastboot Driver” in the archive you downloaded. Should those drivers not work, try the drivers found in "C:\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver"
6. Open the “Fastboot” folder in windows explorer (its part of the archive you extracted in step 1. Hold down the shift key and right click on an empty space in the folder window, select Open Command Prompt Here.
7. Type:
fastboot boot recoveryNEO.img
8. The blue light on the phone will turn off, the screen on the phone will be blank, and the phone will be disconnected from windows, but after a few seconds you will get a Mass Storage & ADB Interface Detected. Note that the phone’s screen will continue to be black for the rest of this process. THIS IS NORMAL, your phone has not been bricked. If you need to stop anywhere along the way, simply unplug the phone from the computer and take your battery out. The phone will return to normal operations, though UNROOTED.
a. Windows will PROBABLY say hardware failed to install. This is fine.
i. Open the start menu, right click on “Computer” and select “Manage”
ii. Select Device Manager on the left side of the Computer Management window that opens.
iii. Look for the unknown piece of hardware. Right click on it and select update/install driver.
iv. Browse your computer, and select the main folder you extracted the archive to way back in step 1 – the drivers are somewhere in there, don’t worry about where, as windows will find them just fine.
9. On your computer navigate to “C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools”. Hold down the shift button on your keyboard and Right click on an empty part of the windows, and select “Open Command Window Here”
10. Type "adb shell". If it says "device not found", disconnect the USB cable, remove the battery, and try again from step 6. Also, try changing the USb port on your CPU. I'm not really sure about this, but I had to do it twice.
Now you’ll have to run a bunch of commands inside the ADB Shell window (the one with the black background and looks like a DOS window). You can just copy and paste each one from here. Be sure that once you start this step, you continue until the end of these instructions.
mount -t yaffs2 -o rw,relatime /dev/block/mtdblock0 /system
If it says “/system is not empty” then type:
"rmdir /system/bin" and then run the first mount command again
type "exit"
11. From the DOS window, Run these commands (again copy and paste each one is fine)
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
adb push su /system/bin/su
adb shell
12. From the adb shell, run:
chmod 0644 /system/app/Superuser.apk
chown 0 /system/bin/su
chgrp 0 /system/bin/su
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
ln -s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
cd
umount /system
reboot
13. The adb shell will terminate. Disconnect the phone from the USB cable, wait for about 15 sec, remove the battery, and then turn it on.
14. From the phone, Open the Market, search for "Busybox" by "Stephen (Stericson)". Install that
15. From the Market, go to My Apps, search for "Superuser" by "ChainsDD" and make sure you're running the latest edition
16. Run the App "Superuser" from your app tray.
- under the settings tab, scroll to the bottom and click SU Binary "tap to check for updates"
17. Run the "Busybox Installer" app. Follow the onscreen instructions - just leave everything at default.
Congratulations! Your device should now be rooted! I personally suggest downloading and installing Titanium Backup to make sure - it will run a root check on startup and notify you if anything is wrong.
Notes:
This may seem to be a complicated method, but, as we will have to wait some weeks for an automated or simpler method, I think making writing an automated tool for this method is not worth the effort. I recently bought an Xperia Pro MK16a and I have already unlocked the bootloader with setool (thanks to alejandrissimo and his remote unlock abilities). Now I'm searching for a way to root the device.
He and I experimented with it a bit, and we've already tried the recovery hot-boot with recovery.img from Arc, Play, and Neo, but with no luck. Recovery just doesn't boot.
He's guessing it's related to something like a different ramdisk or something like that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you bootloader is open you can flash directly "prerooted".img with fastboot? Arc and Neo have this option.

To be able to generate a pre-rooted system.img you need first a rooted phone and this is exactly the problem, how to root it if there is no recovery for MK16
For sure RootXperia.zip will work but for install it the proper recovery is needed first i guess

Totally different phone
This is just the "Xperia Pro" - it was released in August. It's the same phone as the Neo, but with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Model is MK16a (or MK16i for the international one)

That was the first thing I tried, since the Pro should just be a Neo with a keyboard. Unfortunately it doesn't work.
Here's the output:

I've tried the same thing with the Arc and Play recovery images and had the same results.

The instructions on how to get into Recovery on that site are very similar to how to do it on the stock build of my previous phone, the Motorola Milestone. Unfortunately THEY DON'T WORK
I've tried substituting the volume down button with other keys, but with no success. Pretty difficult to guess the right key combination when there's a full qwerty keyboard on here
Is there a way to boot into the standard recovery from ADB or fastboot or something? Possibly from an on-board terminal emulator? A command like "Reboot Recovery" perhaps? Or is that too easy to be possible...
It's ironic that my old Motorola milestone with a totally locked down bootloader proved easier to hack than this phone with it's wide open bootloader

One thing you can try:
after you fastboot boot and the phone is in blackscreenmode please unplug and replug it to pc.
Now try to adb shell on it. Is this working? If yes please gimme a logcat

Nope, adb shell doesn't work. Shows "error: device not found"
But because I'm new to this (I came from a motorola milestone), I want to make sure I did what you actually asked of me:
- I turned on the phone into fastboot mode (hold down menu, plug in usb cable, get blue light)
- from a command prompt window: fastboot boot recoveryARC.img
(replacing ARC with NEO and PLAY depending on the image I'm trying)
- phone now boots into black screen, no blue light, screen backlight is on
- unplug from computer, plug back in
- from command prompt: adb shell
Are those the instructions you wanted me to follow?
Fastboot works fine. Can I do anything from there? Getvar for example, or something? can I run the command Update and flash the RootXperia.zip file? Or will that not work because it's not signed properly or something similar?
Via fastboot you cannot flash the zip. Zip needs to be flashed via recovery, because this only contains some files and not whole system!
I'm sorry, you have to wait until i have the device! Only if the adb shell would work i could help you, if even this is not working it's hard to say what's goin wrong. All you can do is sending me the kernel.sin from you firmware. Maybe i can mix something up with this file

It's because they're all so similar, and are based on the same hardware as the Arc.
Process is simple:
IF you NEVER used UpdateService or PCCompanion BEFORE you unlocked your bootloader then : You need to relock bootloader first (sorry :/)
Then have to use SonyEricsson UpdateService/PC-Companion and tell it to REINSTALL/REPAIR your firmware.
If you used one of the tools before just skip the relock and do this:
After that is done you copy out the two files named:
FILE_XXXXXXXXXXX
FILE_XXXXXXXXXXX
where XXXXXXXXXX are some numbers. This files are located in the subfolder blob_fs inside the UpdateService/PC-Companion directory.
Just copy it on a "safe" place.
After that is done you have to start flashtool go to the "Advanced" Tab -> Decrypt -> then just choose the folder where you copied the files and let flashtool do its work
Afterwards upload the Firmware which is now present as a FTF file, somewhere and post it here (others will be happy to to have the whole MK16a Firmware )

Unfortunately the very first thing I did with the phone was unlock the bootloader. 'Fido' is the only phone company selling the phone, but I'm with 'Rogers'...so I needed to unlock the bootloader in order to actually use the phone as a phone, which was and remains the most important thing to me.
That being said, I'll see if Alejandrissimo can give me a hand with re-locking the bootloader, then I can get the firmware as you instructed, then have him re-unlock the bootloader. I'll just stick my SIM Card back in my old motorola milestone while we work on this so I can still have a working phone.

Though I know my way with ssh, I am new with the rooting stuff and Android. If you need some files or something from a locked bootloader I can help with that, just need some simple instructions.

If you could, that'd be great. I don't especially want to lock my bootloader over again since you have to use SETool to unlock it, which costs money each time you use it (essentially). Not to mention it involves some acrobatics with a paperclip to connect a testpoint inside the phone to a ground!
Unless there's an easier way to lock/unlock now that I've done it once that is...if so, I'm happy to do it.
As for accessing the files Bin4ry is talking about, boot to windows if you can and do it that way. Just follow his instructions to repair your firmware, then go to that folder in windows (it's located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony Ericsson\Sony Ericsson PC Companion). At least, that's my understanding.
Hi. Yesterday, I bought a Xperia Pro. Ive spent most of the afternoon and the nigh trying to root it, and I've finally got how to do it. It's a manual method, as there is not an automated one.
There's no need to say I'm not responsible for any damaged or bricked devices(but mine is working ok )
What you need:
1. The Xperia Neo Recovery, by Bin4ry, get it here
2. xperia_pro_root.zip I'm attaching. It contains the files from RootXperia.zip, but without the update.zip-related files, as they are not needed.
3. The Android SDK, with the Google USB Drivers Package.
4. If you've never used your device in fastboot mode, you may also need to follow steps 7 & 8 from SE bootloader unlocking tutorial.
5. [NOT REALLY SURE] Application Debugging & Unknown Sources enabled.
6. [NOT REALLY SURE] Unlocked Bootloader. This is because mine is unlocked, but I don't really know if that is required to boot the recovery image via fastboot.
I'm assuming that you are working on a Windows/Unix terminal, with a working directory where you have recoveryNeo.img, Superuser.apk and su /these two from the zip file I attach), and that fastboot & adb are on the PATH. If some file is not on the working directory, or fastboot/adb are not on the path, use full paths.
Instructions:
1. Disconnect & Power off the phone.
2. Hold down the menu button and connect the USB cable.
(If Windows asks you to install the drivers, install the driver from ANDROIDSDK\extras\google\usb_driver folder).
3. Run "fastboot boot recoveryNeo.img". The fastboot device will be disconnected, but after a few seconds you will get a Mass Storage & ADB Interface Detected.

I used rom toolbox to change the fonts of my phone.The first time it reebooted properly.But the second time i installed a font and went into reboot it wasnt starting up.The phone just stays in boot animation screen and the colors just keeps moving.It stayed like this for about 10 minutes so i removed the battery and went into recovery mode and did a factory rest but no use.I am running Jellybean 4.1.1. ANY HELP ??
Re-flash your rom.
If you aren't on a custom one or don't have a rom.zip on your phone...check my guide.

Fonts reside in /system/fonts/
You can probably rip them from anyone else's rom.zip and push them (as explained in post 3) if you aren't on a custom rom.

I cant exactly understand what to do.
Can you show me any other steps or provide any detailed info ??
Post one to set up adb.
adb is installed but do i need to transfer any files from pc to nexus ??
if i enter into recovery how do i move the file ??

A: The easiest option is to get into recovery and restore a nandroid using the above guide (pull battery to put phone in an off-state if needed).
However, more advanced options are available if you don't have a nandroid available (You're naughty).
Do you have another rom .zip available on your SD card? If so, simply use the above guide for installing a rom to get you booting again.
If not, you can download one on your PC. Boot into fastboot (the green Android with open chest menu). Navigate to recovery and select it with the power button.
Move the .zip to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.
Open ADB.
Change the NAMEOFZIP.zip below to the correct file name...and perform the action.

You may have to reboot recovery to get the file to show up. Now follow the guide above for flashing a rom to get you booting again.

Did you install a tweak that modified only a file or two on your phone? (Find this out by opening the .zip and looking in the folders (ignore META-INF). Good news! We MAY be able to recover you completely. If this doesn't work...you'll have to follow another method.
Get your phone into fastboot (the boot-menu that allows you to select recovery/reboot/etc). Navigate to recovery and select it. Start up ADB. Pull the files that were modified out of the stock rom's .zip (using whatever tweak you were installing as reference to find what was changed) that you're on into the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder. Now we're going to push these files onto your phone...replacing the tweaked ones and hopefully getting you booted again. Use this code, but change the values of the file name and where it should reside. This is only an example!

This will mount your system so you can write to it.

This should exit shell and allow the use of adb commands again. You may need to type it a couple of times (until the #_ changes back to the platform_tools> prompt).

adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
(Change the location and the file name(s) to the correct values. Press enter after each file that you need to replace).

If so...use the part before the red line.
If not...use the part after.
To use this option, however...
You'll need access to working font files.

recommend using fastboot over toolkit... a lot of problems occur because they used toolkit...

It's not a toolkit. It's an App that contains ROM Manager, Titanium Backup(that's what I call it), CPU manager, theme manager, and bunch of other manager.

It seems Jellybean introduced something that brought some incompatibility with some fonts (and with it might have gotten to affect apps as well, as expected), but some still work (i've tried a few, works flawlessly, backup before applying). Checkout this thread out.

There's other ways to do it: if I'm not sure if something works, I rather know how it's done at source level for example; if i cannot, then just seach/confirm how other people are doing it, with good results.
