You can't. Whatever mode you set it in (Charge, Mass Storage, Sync), it'll still charge.

its too bad

i think if you take your battery out, connect it to your pc it should turn on lyk when connected to charger, you battery cant charge if its not in

Why would you do that?

people should stop worrying about stuff like that.
nimh times are over.
charge it whenever you can. who cares...

Well maybe if you are using a laptop which is not connected to the ac, so you don't want the phone to drain the battery of your laptop?

Then don't keep it plugged into the laptop constantly? Move your files and unplug it. It's not like it'll sodomize your laptop's battery if you copy files for 15 mins.

I got a ]dell xps batteries for my iBook batteryup.com . While the battery itself seems to have held up better than the original apple battery in terms of how long it holds a charge, it doesn't fit in the case as well as an apple battery, and its rubber foot fell off. But in terms of basic functioning I have no complaints. It works fine.

Have you tried using ftp server. Then you wouldnt need to connect to your pc with usb.

How to turn off USB-charging?

Hello,
is there a way to prevent the phone from charging when connected via USB?
Probably not until the phone is rooted. Why would you want to turn it off though?
I just do not want the phone to be charged every time, I connect it with my PC, especially if it is not necessary.
I'd like the option to choose whether it will be charged or not.

why not?
what is there to loose?
Probably, when the phone is connected to a laptop which is NOT connected to a wall charger. This will drain the laptop battery, which you dont want.

makes sense!
That does mae sense, but some people still think phone battery's have a memory effect. They dont now, so repeated charging from a partial charge is fine.
Ah, I was also wondering where this option was. Used it for years on my Windows Mobile devices. Really don't understand why this hasn't been implemented, couldn't be that hard! Any workarounds yet?
And as explained above, it's pretty annoying when you for example travel by train and connect your phone to your (low capacity) netbook for tethering, only to see that is drains your netbook battery almost twice as fast. Without charging, my phone will easily outlive my netbook. So no, I really don't need charging. Bluetooth tether then might be a better option.. Oh wait, this isn't supported either!
But overall I'm more than happy with my Desire and Android!
Update: Just found PdaNET on Market which claims to provide bluetooth tether on non-rooted devices.. I'll check it out

Try charging it without pc in the normal way to look how long charging lasts. And if its faster your problem is the pc.
If you have quite a lot usb devices pluged in your pc maybe power limit is reached. If I will charge my desire at my pc I can't get my nvidia 3d. Idiom transmitter to work and my g19 stops to work.
Hope I was a help
Is your phone on or off when you charge it? If first case, turn it off and see what happens.

Dead in the morning

Ok, so here is the scenario...
Charging from my laptop, via USB... Always works fine, UNLESS: I leave it plugged into the laptop over night.
To reproduce this issue, and *I* can, every time, you need:
-Laptop
-Xperia Ion
-USB charge cable
What to do:
-Plug the phone into the Laptop USB port. (The phone starts charging...As it should)
** Please note, it does not matter what level of charge the phone has when performing this
-Unplug the laptop
-Goto bed
Now...If you get the same results I do, every single time... Your phone will be off, and dead in the morning.
Has anyone else experienced this?
It happens only on laptops... Well the one's I have. (One laptop is a HP/Compaq 8510p and the other is a Lenovo T500)

When you said "unplug the laptop" meaning the USB cable unplug from the laptop, laptop turned off, or phone is unplug from the USB cable ? From my understanding if you have the USB plugged in the phone and no power source on the other end. Phone will die, it actually drain the battery. Happen to all my phones, as if I charged in the car and turn car off - forgot the phone in the car (luckly nobody breakin yet), and next thing I know my battery is even worse than before or if not dead already.

Sorry about that. By unplug, I meant the power source to the laptop.
This is the ONLY phone that I have had that does this. My previous phone did just fine...
So...If I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like the laptop is actually pulling power back from the phone somehow when it die?. But again, on all previous phones, I would wake up...Laptop either sleeping or dead, and the phone was fully charged.
It is not the laptop pulling the power (well it might be easy to think it that way) - but the phone itself thinking it is beeing charged. However no juice is going in (power source) so for some reason that drain the battery.
From your case, because the laptop turn off, the phone couldn't pull power from the laptop - so the battery drain instead. I'm not sure how you able to manage to charge other phones that way. I never could and yes I will find a death phone if I do that.
Also I noticed Ion has a high Voltage & amp. For some USB cable or car/home charger might not give enough juice for the phone if used while charging. I notice that on my car charger if Gps/navigator is used even when plugged battery seem to drain (not as fast if not plugged). I am looking to get a higher voltage on the car charger.

Yea, not sure. Maybe a branding thing? All of my previous phones were HTC. Maybe that has something to do with it? I'm gonna leave the laptop plugged in tonight, but still allow it to go to sleep. ...its the inner curiosity in me. I have to narrow this down. Lol.

How many amps is your car charger? "Most" only put out anywhere from .8 - 1.3 amps. I've noticed the house charger is 1.5 amps.
On thread topic: Leaving the power source to the laptop was the difference... The phone actually held its charge over night that way. So it seems unplugging the laptop is
I'm not sure. I'm using one of those small footprint cigarette lighter usb adapters.

Have you tried plugging it into your computer? Does your computer recognize the phone if so? Do you get any LED indicators when plugged in?
I ask because I want to rule out a bad USB connector.

If you are doing data and processor heavy things, and potentially have screen brightness up, it will definitely toll on your battery anyway. Has this been an issue before? Or did it just start? Did it start with the installation of your current rom or some app? Need a little more info.
I would make a nandroid of your current ROM and restore back to TW stockish rom to see if anything improves (under the same circumstances). I am not in any way saying wicked is bad, but rather just helping rule out possibilities. While roms may work for most, there is always a chance that it does not work correctly on that one piece of hardware.
Might be something simple like a bad cable. Have you tried another charger and cable? I've had chargers and cables go bad and they did just what you described.

[Q] battery strage behaviour

My Galaxy w doesn't charge the right way any more. As you can see from the pic... After a night plugged to a standard charger it has only 75% battery left, and it seems to be disconnecting itself from time to time. Moreover it doesn't charge when I plug it into my car's USB, that works with many other phones! Any way to fix it?

How about a new battery? Have you tried connecting it to your computer if the connection gets interrupted?
The battery is quite new actually... Same problem with the computer: after a while it stops charging and starts back after minutes
But data connection keeps working while phone stops charging?
