Importing contact vCard into Google contacts in HTC Sense - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to import a vCard sent to me via text message so that it would sync with Google, but it only showed up in the phone contacts which don't sync. Is there a way to import vCards using the People app to accomplish this? I also looked for a way to move the "phone only" imported contact to Google contacts without success.

Try importing through a computer using Gmail. If you look around, there is an import option in Gmail which will sync your contacts.
Oh lol, 100th post.

VCard Import - Directly from Phone?
forceOnature's approach works, 100%.
However I, like Jykinturah, would like to be able to import vCards directly into my phone (i.e. when I am away from a computer). I tried (HTC EVO 4G) and can't seem to figure it out. Does anyone know if / how this can be done?

You could probably do it via Email and the Evo's browser. Just make sure to select "Desktop version" from Gmail (near the bottom) as I don't know if the Mobile version supports contact management.

Importing to gmail
Yes, you can import a vCard contact to the google contacts instead of the phone contacts. You can also move a contact from phone to google, and vice-versa, from the phone.
1. Click on the people icon
2. Press menu
3. Select Import/export
4. Select Import from SD card
5. Select Google
6. Select “Import one vCard file” (may not see this option if you only have one file)
7. Select the file that you are wanting to import as a google contact.
To move a contact from phone to google:
1. Click on the people icon
2. Press menu
3. Select Import/export
4. Select Export to SD card
5. Select phone
Then follow the steps posted to import to google. I have done this multiple times on my EVO, as well as others. This works on every android 2.1 phone I have tested (they have all been sprint devices).

[Q] How to move contacts from SIM to google?

A question, is there some quick and/or easy to move all contacts to google account, so i can use later facebook pictures etc? Thank you.
Hmm.. I've accomplished that by exporting the numbers to a .CSV file from my old phone and then importing them via the webbased GMail.
My Desire doesn't seem to want to export it's contacts anywhere, though...
I remember when I first inserted my sim into a Magic I imported to Google from it. Haven't looked back since
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
i think i'll do everything manually....
Go to HTC People
Press Menu
Select Import / Export
Select Export to SD Card
Select SIM
Select OK
Whilst still in HTC People
Press Menu
Select Import/Export
Select Import From SD Card
Select Google
Select Import All vCard Files
Should be done.
wow will try
possibile that will make double contacts maybe?
nope still many contacts "sim" only....ok manually it's
I have done this now, how to import facebook pics to contacts?
go into setting-> accounts and sync
over there you should have a facebook if you set it up on initial set up.make sure sync contacts is selected.
it will try match up facebook contacts with your own contacts.
the ones that do not show up, go into the menu, select people. go onto the person's name.
on the bottom scroll onto the sync looking symbol. it should be between a mail and photo option.
you will then get an option to "link facebook profile" to the user. once this link has been set it will not lose it when you upgrade your OS's
yep noticed now pics
Ok now that i fixed everything....
When someone calls me, and if he's linked to FB account, will his or her pic be shown in dialer?

How do you add a vcard to your Google account???

Something that I thought should be simple but strangely (for Android) it's not.
If you get sent contact details in a vcard, it gets saved to the phone memory. I still can't see how to save that vcard info to my Google account.
Anyone got any ideas? A feature I've missed? An app? I use Handcent but that's a bit poo for vcards so I have to go back to the native Messages app to even view vcards.
Any ideas???
+1
I too need it, by far couldn't succeed that. It would be the best way to keep your contacts with details that sim cannot store.

This is the response I got from HTC when I asked for any method they know to get contacts from the phone to the Google account:
I would advise you to savbe the V-Card to your phones memory, so that it show in your contacts. Then in the People app, press Import/Export then Export to SD card. Choose the contact you wish to export. We have now exported a copy of that contact to the memory card. Now.. We are going to import it back into the phone as a Google contact, so, From the People main screen, press Menu, Import & Export, Import from SD card, choose as 'Google' contact. This will now have made that V-Card a Google contact. If you then Sync your phone to your Google account by going to Menu, Settings, Accounts & Sync, tap 'Sync All' this will send the new contact to your Google account. Then you will be able to see this new contact in your Google Mail - Contacts section.

The only problem I had with these instructions is that I found exporting contacts is all or nothing. You can't pick and choose. Luckily for me, all my contacts are on my Google account so it was only the one vcard sent by MMS that I wanted to transfer over.

[Q] How do I switch a contact from Phone to Google??

I saved some of my contacts to the phone instead of google and would like to switch them around but can't figure out a way to. Saving them to google puts them in my contact list in Gmail which keeps them synced between Gmail and the phone.
I tried using the export/import option to export them to google but it only lets me export or import to the SD card. I've also went through every available option in the contacts menu settings and can't figure out a way to do it. Also have searched other threads on the subject and none of them have stated a way to do it.
Any help is appreciated.
...
Settings -> Accounts and Sync
Then set up your google account *AND* make sure it is selected for contacts
After you save the "phone" list to the sd card, go back and import them from the sd card. When importing, it will give you an option of "phone" or "google". If you save them as google you will have duplicates.

Thanks
I exported the phone contacts then imported them as google contacts. Then all I had to do was link the duplicates together.

[Q] Syncing contacts with Google

I have my Gmail account setup so that I can utilise the various syncing options between my Desire and Google. I use iCal successfully but am having trouble understanding how best to sync my phone contacts.
I always save a new contact to the phone but it seems that unless I also save them as a google contact on the phone, there is no way those numbers will sync to my Google contacts. Surely I don't have to save everything twice?

As far as I know the safest method of saving all your contact is to sync them with Google. I only have one set of contacts on my device and they are always in sync with Google, therefore the need for me to keep duplicate copies on my device diminished.
It is also very easy to then access your Google contacts from a PC and make any necessary changes, or indeed make the changes via your device.

Scott
So are you saying that I may as well just save them as Google contacts to begin with and not bother saving them to the phone or the sim card?
Some days ago, I also started the sync for all of my contact to google because I wanted to have them in some backup place. Now all my contacts are in google and if I create a new one I always create it as a google contact (otherwise no sync of course).
I transfered them the following way:
Contacts -> Menu -> Export to SD Card -> Select Phone or Sim (whatever you are saving on currently) : now you have all your contacts exported into one file
then
Contacts -> Menu -> Import from SD Card -> Select Google: now you should have all your contacts in your "google" phonebook
then
change the contact folder to google (will not show dupliactes)
then
sync with google
I saw that, after the sync, I had various double entries in my google account but you can merge them, works fine.
hope it helps a little with your problem, for me it was the easiest way to sync my phone contacts to google

Contact Sync Help

My sister has a business and she uses her EVO as a business phone, she has around 7,000 contacts saved in the phone, The problem is now that it is messing up the phones memory taking 218 MB of Space. I understand How to Import/Export contacts to gmail via .VCF file but the contacts are just copied and put on the gmail account and remain on the phone. When I go to settings, Accounts and sync. I tap the sync button but nothing really happens and the date remains the same. I dont know how to remove the contacts from the phones memory and keep them only on gmail. Im afraid if I start randomly deleting I may lose 7,000+ contacts and You guys would be reading my obituary. What do you recommend I do? Thanks!
Some brief googling, it woud seem you have to manually add them one by one into gmail via a computer (Easiest method of this mundane method, irony?) and then sync your contacts to the phone via your google account. This way when you switch phone just add google account and BAM, all contacts. I'll look for an easier way.

Further googling, I found this. Idk if you've tried this, seeing as you mentioned VCF, but give this a whirl.
First you will want to transfer your old contacts off your phone
To export contacts to an SD card:
SDcard must be inserted and "mounted".
From the home screen, touch Contacts
Touch the Menu Key, press More
Touch Import/Export
Touch Export to SD card
Handset will confirm VCF filename.
Contacts will be located in the root directory on your sdcard as a .vcf file.
Now, plug your phone into your computer, and mount it as a disk drive. Next you need to import these contacts to Google Contacts

Also, verify in gmail that the contacts are indeed there. IF in fact they are all indeed there, it is safe to delete them as they will be in google. I think that even though they are backed up, since they are on the phone already, gmail wont sync twice.... But I've always synced to gmail instead of phone so, I wouldn't really know much on the subject. Sorry, Hope this helps though
Edits: Further Digging yields results
You got it, back up online through gmail and save the file to a conputer, that is 2 safe places.
Done, move on.
