Google option disappeared from HTC Mail - Desire General

Sorry if this has already been addressed, my searches didn't find what I was experiencing.
I'm not quite sure what's caused this though I believe it may be due to removing the HTC mail widget off of my screen but now when using the HTC mail app or widget my Googlemail account and emails have disappeared along the option for setting up a new Google account. The Google mail app works fine and I can see the email is still being synced by I have no idea where this feature has gone from HTC's Mail app
Any ideas aside from hard reset?

In the mail app you select POP/IMAP and just put in your Google account details. It'll set up the servers and ports automatically.

Mail versus GMail

I want to try using the Mail app instead of the GMail one, but is it actually possible to disable the GMail app without losing all the other functionality you get from logging into your Google account? - there seems to be a unified log in used by GMaps as well, for example. And when I try to remove the account in settings, it says I have to do a factory reset, this seems bonkers to me.
I couldn't manage to get my Google Mail account to sign into the Mail app...

Turn off sync for Gmail under Settings->Accounts & sync.
You might also want to switch of notifications in the Gmail app too.
Regards,
Dave
Will the phone sync google mail contacts via imap on the mail app or do I need to stick to the gmail app for that?

I think you must have a different version from mine. I have
Settings - Accounts& Sync
Background Data (tickbox)
AutoSync (tickbox)
Manage Accounts
Google
Stocks
Weather
If I tick Google I get a new screen:
Sync calendar
Sync contacts
Sync Google Mail
Sync Picassa Web Albums
(These all just trigger a sync)
At the bottom there are 2 buttons, Sync Now and Remove Account.
If I try remove account a box pops up warning that it will delete all the data, I say OK, then another box that says it can't do it, I have to factory reset because it is required by some applications.
I have been using the Google Mail app since I've had my phone, but today came across a problem - I could not copy & paste a tracking # from an email. I then quickly set up my gmail in the Mail app, & was able to perform this action very easily.
So my question is: has anyone used both apps extensively, & could they give me a quick "pro's & cons"?

Here you go someone has already done that:

The only thing that really annoys me is the fact that your Mail widget does not update the list of emails unless you open the Mail application.
Even if you already updated the email list in your GMail appl.
For example: I receive an email. I get a notification in the notification bar. I open it and it takes me to the Gmail appl (by default). I check my emails, read them, exit the application.
However, my HTCMail Widget (sitting on the desktop) does not show any updates. I have to open the HTCMail manually, sync (again!) and only then can I see the updated list.
Aaaargh!
I've been tempted to move to using the mail application over the gmail one as well.
I think ill setup the mail application with my other gmail account then compare the 2
I much prefer the gmail app. I think its quicker and easier to reply, and it syncs straight away unlike the mail app.
Only downside is the lack of widget, but with the number of apps I have on my homescreens, this isn't an issue.
I always feel it's worth mentioning k9mail at this point, if only because it supports IMAP IDLE.

synching contacts

I'm still confused about syncing contacts. I have a Desire on Orange. I have a gmail account, and I use the htc mail app and connect to my gmail account using exchange. I sync my contacts to my gmail account using `google/sync contacts` from the sync page, and I sync my mail using `exchange activesync`. I do this because I can see/edit my contacts via the web gmail page (which is easier/faster than doing it on the phone), and because the mail app is better than the gmail app. But it seems that I have some contact information on my phone which is not visible via the gmail website. To pick one example, it's showing as a `linked contact` between 'exchange' and 'google'. Can I see my exchange contacts online? Where are they? I want them in one place, so I can back them up occasionally (I've already lost my contacts once as I set my phone up). It would seem to make sense, given that some contact info appears to be on exchange somewhere, to have them all there - then I can stop syncing with 'google' on my phone altogether, but I have to be able to see/edit/back them up first.
I've tried googling for this, but all I see is Googles own pages for other platforms, non-free apps to do exchange etc etc.

I have the same issues too
Well i don't use exchange, but i can say how i use my gmail sync:
I use Sync/google account on the definitions menu to sync my google calendar, contacts and mail.
This allows me to use mail on gmail app (not htc mail app), calendar on android calendar (i can use htc calendar widgets) and manage online contacts.
Since i previously added my "phone" contacts to phone memory and to a group on google contacts, they have linked to each other and i can mantain an online and local copy of them (this is great to add a hi res picture to contact, since i add the picture to online and local and then choose local picture to be displayed).
I do know that some fields from online google contacts and local contacts are different, and i think this is as stupid as the picture not having quality on google contacts online, but i hope they would solve it in a near future.
I hope that from now on, since google is saying that the BIG changes on Android are done, they will spend some time dealing with the little details that can be very annoying...
Same issue here.
Sync of Contacts
Google-Contacts -> Desire: works
Desire -> Google-Contacts: dosent work
If i try to add or change a birthday on the phone it does not arrive theo google-contacts account. The other way works. Biggest issue on this fine phone.

Hi, that issues are from Android and Gmail and not from the Desire.
You should add birthday dates to Google contacts or else the synchronization wont work well, but i do agree these are major stuffs that really annoy me!
There could be an interesseting thing.
I have Software-Version 1.15.XXXX (T-Mobile, rooted Phone) and i found an O2 User with 1.20.XXX - he said it works at his phone.

Sending Email Twice

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone else have this problem with the Mail app? I use my google email, through the mail app, and it sends the same email twice.
Thanks!
Rez
I just noticed this same issue on my Evo. Sent an email this morning and noticed it had sent twice, one minute after the first. I'm using a Google Apps account via the Mail app.
Just a thought, but you said you were using your gmail account through the mail app... You know that the Gmail app is already set up for your gmail account? So if I understand you correctly, you have your gmail set up twice on the phone... I may be mistaken, but if that's the case, sending from the mail app, might cause a synced send from the Gmail app as well? Try removing your gmail account from the mail app and send a message to test this out.
No, I the account in my Mail app is a Google Apps account that uses my work domain. I do have a separate Gmail account set up through the Gmail app, but this is a different account. Only the Google Apps account is doing it. It seems to be a common problem people have had, but the recipient only gets one copy, so it's just an annoyance on my end. Although it does show up twice in the Gmail thread, so maybe subsequent replies would have that duplicate in them, not that most people would even notice. Still. . . .
Maybe the haptic feedback is making the screen register as a double push with that quick vibrate? Sorry just crazy theory...

Froyo GMail Bug?

I have two gmail accounts setup on my phone. Before the Froyo update, I would get instant new email notifications on both of my accounts. Ever since I updated to the Froyo final build, I only get new mail notification on my first account. The other one doesn't sync. Both of the accounts are setup to sync under the Settings->Accounts&Sync menu. Any ideas?
I have this exact problem. Help me please.
I have this problem too and it is frustrating!
On my phone I only have one gmail account set up as the official Google account. I then set up my other gmail accounts under the mail program including my primary gmail account. I disabled the syncing of my Google account and access all of my email through the mail program. I do this because I hate the gmail program and all of my gmail and yahoo accounts sync without problem.

I prefer the GMAIL app over the mail app because I am not the most techincally advanced person in the world and GMAIL easier to use in my opinion. I don't know how to make the mail app sync right when the email comes in like in GMAIL (went through the menu and did not find the option). Thanks for the suggestion it is really appreciated.
Some how i got mine working.
Delete the account
Re-add. It will say this account is not sync'ed (do not press menu and do the one time sync)
Now go to the home screen, menu, settings, accounts and sync. Click on the account and hit "snyc now" a few times.
Reboot the phone
Once back on go back to accounts & sync. Open the gmail account. You should now have the sync mail option.
Check the box, it should then sync
Ahould be good to go
This is exactly what i did and its working like it use to on 2.1

Glad it worked for someone else
I am using K-9 Mail to view all my mail. Great app, integrated inbox to view mail from all accounts at once, can set a color for each account, different notification for each account, very customizable.
Any word on this problem? Just flashed Froyo today and it's bugging me.
I've been having this issue, but I've been on Froyo for a while, I think there is a problem on the server side of things that its not pushing the mail to the phone. I've been posting to a Google help ticket and they said that they're aware that mail is not being pushed to some handsets and they are working on a solution.

No Calendar Sync?

Just setting up my Defy. Personal GMail showed Mail, Contacts and Calendar but my work GMail only showed Contacts and Mail. Any ideas?
Been there, done that, doesn't work. I had your same issue, because actually android supports only one Google calendar. I solved giving to my work profile full calendar permissions to my home profile; so from my home profile I can see and modify work calendar.
And yes I know it's a bit annoying to setup, but at least it works.

This isn't accurate. There are definitely multiple calendars available because my Nexus S had both calendars syncing.
Really? Then count me in if you find a solution .
