I moved Mms.apk and Mms.odex to /system/apps using Root Explorer, made sure that their permissions are right and they still don't show up in the app drawer. I'm stumbled...

Did you try and reboot the phone after pushing them to the app folder? Also make sure through Root Explorer that they did in fact push. Go back and check.

Just smack me.......
On the other hand, it's driving me nuts that /system mounts rw fine, but I still can't ./adb push anything - permission denied.

Nada... tried that, tried the full one. mount shows it mounted rw, but can't write anything there. Only Root Explorer works for some reason...

I am using DeFrost 9.0b with spare parts that lets you install apps on the sdcard. I am trying to backup all my apps that I downloaded and installed but I can't find them on the sdcard with root explorer.
Does anyone know where on the sdcard the apps are downloaded?

Could it be a permission issue. I can't seem to change the permissions for the .android_secure folder. Is there a specific way that I need to change permissions in root explorer?
Did you direct the apps to the correct location with pm SetInstallLocation 2?
As suggested, the apps should be inside encrypted files within the /sdcard/.android_secure folder, whose contents are visible in recovery mode only.
So how can I get to the files then?
Should also work by using a Terminal Emulator.
Go to the Android Market, download an app called "ConnectBot".
Sign in to it, set is to local.
try the following (enter these commands):
su
ls -l /sdcard/.android_secure
I think you could also install Apps2SD using the Terminal Emulator with these commands:
su
pm setInstallLocation 2
Let me know if that helps at all.

How can I get that? I like the volume slider, since I have to switch to vibrate the other day (i know it goes to silent but I have an app to make it vibrate instead). If anybody has some tips or a way that'd be helpful.

I'm on the Skyraider rom, don't know if that makes a difference but I'm deleting it with root explorer then the phone shuts off powers up and the file is right back there again.
Careful if you're on the stock rom and delete the default lockscreen apk, I've heard it makes the lookscreen look really bad. But it works on other roms.

Delete it via adb on your computer. I believe it is rm /system/app/htclockscreen.apk

i would just use astro file mgr on the phone, remove the files from the rom, and flash it again with all changes applied

The only way you can delete a file in system, is if you've used unrevoked forever to unlock nand. Then in root explorer, change system to rw (read/write), then I'd rename the app instead of deleting just in case you need to put it back.

From you computer (if you on Linux or MAC open a terminal window from Windows open a CMD window) at the prompt type:
ADB Shell
cd /system
mkdir app.backup
mv /system/app/htclockscreen.apk /system/app.backup
You never know when you may need one of files you "RM" into oblivion...

If you're in recovery, you have to mount system under the partions menu first.
Edit: or might be sd card & storage menu depending on version of clockworkmod you're running.

I've used better terminal emulator to remove the lock screen.
Use this line:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
To mount system.
Then:
cd system/app
rm HtcLockScreen.*
(Case sensitive)
Worked great, had to reboot though and it stuck. Until then the old one stayed.

Ok did exactly what you said, then like said it would it rebooted. Comes back up as the HTC one. Am I the only it's done this for? Why won't it just erase?
I just removed mine with adb and it worked without a hitch. Word of caution though if you use your alarm, you need install another clock app otherwise you won't be able to turn the alarm off without pulling the battery. I just installed the stock android desk clock and all is well again.

I am trying to remove some apps I dont use or want like the mail app and others and I know i have nand protection unlocked becasue I can run nand backup and restore. But when i run adb shell and rm Mail.apk i get message of rm failed for Mail.apk, read only file system. I am a noob with adb but is it possible i dont have nand unlocked?
Being able to NAND backup and restore doesn't have anything to do with having NAND unlocked.
You obviously don't have full root.
download or find (please pay for it on the market)
root explorer, run it, this will put you on the / directory which is the root of the phone, not the sd card, and up in the top right corner it says mount r/o or mount r/w
by default it is read only r/o
hit the button and beside it you will see small text saying 'mounted r/w'
if it lets you mount r/w then you should be good to go.
just navigate to your /system/app filder, long press on the apk file you want to delete and choose delete, it will error out if you dont have r/w access, but make sure the upper right corner still says 'mounted r/w' - sometimes when you mount the phone in the opening page, it doesnt mount everything as r/w so you might have to mount the /system/app folder.
so, if you have it mounted r/w and it says so, and it wont let you delete or rename anything, then you know that you do not have a full root, just the partial root and you will have to go thru and reroot it for full access.
there are simpler ways i imagine but root explorer is the king of file explorers as far as i am concerned.
the only thing it needs is a built in FTP and SMB (windows network) explorer.

stock rooted rom doesnt matter, thats what i run from time to time and i can delete/move/rename anythign i want anywhere on the phone (ok i havent tried every folder but have not hit a file/folder i couldnt alter yet, because i have full root access.

I asked because I had a similar problem when I had stock rooted. Once I changed it went away.

doesnt he have to have superuser installed to do it via root explorer, or login to a terminal via adb with 'su' to rename/move/delete
if you didnt type su, and then get the $ prompt you cant do what you are trying to do. ... ???

You can use Estrongs File Explorer and use the root option. No payment required. Unless you are running CM ROM, be sure to turn off the root option before closing the program, otherwise next time you open ES it will give a force close.

wow I love this forum what a huge response in such a short time I'm gonna test to see if I don't have nand properly unlocked and I tried using android mate to delete the apks and that didn't work either but I'm running fresh 1.0.2 currently
Just tried using es file explorer with root explorer and mount file system as writable and deleted the apk and everything worked great the app is gone! Thank you for the help this means i have nand unlocked right? I must have been doing something wrong in the adb shell
You can also issue the command 'adb remount'.
The system partition is mounted read only at start up and this command mounts it read/write. It has nothing to do at all with your NAND.

I removed wireless_tether using root explorer. When i try to install another version of wireless_tether, it says i am trying to overwrite another app, then wont let me install because it says its a system app. then I go in to look and see if I had truly removed it , it has a different name "andro tether" under settings/apps/manage apps. It doesn't show this in the root explorer for me to delete it. How can I fully delete it if its not showing there anymore.

I would just use a terminal emulator and move it back. I personally haven't treid it but should still work. Or just move it back with a root explorer

Mv htclockscreen.apk /system/app/
I am pretty sure that its in system/app anyway. Sorry my evo is powered off but that's where its at on my shift. Once its there just reboot the phone. It should be back the way was. Hope that helps.
Guess I should clarify that you don't need to actually install it. You just need to get it back into the directory that it needs to be in then reboot

I have root explorer and have replaced it in there again... but it does not work... it shows its in there but wont install... any thoughts?

As trentlythp said, you dont actually "install" the .apk. It just has to be in the /system/app folder. Try copying the htclockscreen.apk to that folder then reboot and see what happens.

This is a well-known tip, but it certainly couldn't hurt to aggregate it here.

I just deleted the CDROM.ISO with Root Explorer. I didn't need to reboot before I connected it again, it was gone.

Yes you do... any root file explorer will do the trick, and it does ask for root access when deleting that file.
I figured that was the case. I was rooted so long on my rezound that I never had to worry about it.
