LauncherPro - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I must be a complete noob. But i've been trying to figure out how to use this program, but i don't know how to turn it on? Not listed under widget or apps or... how in the world do i try this out??!

You won't want to use it unless you are rooted and remove HTC Sense.

Not exactly...the new update blocks you from using other launchers.
If you don't have the update it'll work without root and you don't need to remove sense.
On the other hand, if you have the update you will need to root your phone first.

That is because it is not technically an app, at least not the type that you are accustomed to using. Do this to get it to work.
1. Go to Settings ---> Applications ---> Manage Applications
2. After the list loads scroll down to HTC Sense, tap "Clear Defaults" and "Force Stop"
Touch the home button and it should give you an option on which launcher you would like to load.
Hope this helps!

Already rooted and running fresh. And apparently this came with the most recent fresh update, but had no idea out to try it out! So thanks! This is exactly what i needed.

disabling sense and using the stock launcher was the only way to get my computer to see my phone. i tried launcher pro but my comp will not see my phone now, very very frustrating.

Really?
I've been in root land so I haven't used it and I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't BLOCK other launchers, I think it just doesn't include the 2.1 AOSP launcher "Launcher 2."
As far as the system cares, your home screen is just an app like a browser or music app, it is just a matter of disabling which one is set as default. This can be done in the applications menu via the method described above, or you may find the application "Home Switcher" useful if you like to try out different home screen launchers?
I certainly could be wrong, but I would be surprised if they blocked the ability to turn off sense as the default.

You do not need to be rooted to use either ADW.Launcher nor LauncherPro.
I highly doubt the launcher is causing your computer to not see the device.

Why? What does rooting, or removing Sense, have to do with using an alternative launcher? Take your time, be specific.

No, the new OTA removes the stock Launcher2. It doesn't block anything.

Wrong. You can either use the Force Close trick to get Sense to close, or you can just grab Home Switcher from the Market and use that to close Sense.

I doubt it either, but wit the stock launcher as default my comp saw my phone n that was the only way, wouldnt work wit sense. Wit the new update, they removed the launcher so i tried launcher pro as default n it didnt work. But the weird thing is that my computer at work sees my phone wit no problem, so it must be something within my comp that i cant seem to figure out. n my comp is fully updated n drivers are all up to date so its weird.

I just loaded launcher pro last night. Took me a while to figure it out too as it is NOT in the apps and there are NO instructions.
Is it just me...or is there some conspiracy in Android land to NEVER HAVE ANY INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!!!
grrrr
Anyway...somehow one time I tapped the home button on phone and it popped up with a window that asked which one I wanted to use. No idea how I got it, but there it was. It had stock android, launcher, and sense listed. (I am still pre-ota). I have played around with all three.
However...honestly...I found launcher to be a complete slow tortoise! Seriously. Everyone hatin on Sense and Launcher was the slowest thing I have ever seen. And I hadn't even added any apps to it. Not sure I like it at all.
Only cool bit is the home screen rotation...which is what I was looking for. I should go leave comments on this....

LauncherPro is a speed demon and is great to use (been doing so since I found out about it).
I have no idea why it would be slow for you at all.

Cuz he has sense still running I would think

Be sure to clean slate your HTC Sense Launcher. I am running EVOlution V9 now, so can't remember exactly where the option is; but it's there somewhere. I installed Launcher Pro on my Stock ROM yesterday before rooting and loved it. Everything worked great once I deleted everything off of my HTC Sense Launcher and set Launcher Pro to default. Running it on Froyo now as well.

You think? I heard so many great things about it, but it is nasty slow on my machine. So if I choose it from that pop up window...then you think sense is still trying to run but with that launcher??
So...how is this done? You have to actually get rid of sense or can you turn it off without root?
(ps...i do plan to root, but not until i make a decision in my 30 day period...yes, i have commitment issues!)

Open Sense again. I think if you hit menu, something like "Scenes" or similar will appear. Select that and select "Clean Slate." That should clear your Sense homescreen.
Then try Launcher Pro again.

HTC Stuff Killing Battery, How About Vanilla 2.1 Rom?

Is there anyway to TOTALLY remove sense UI + widgets and all the rest of the HTC crap?
I know about disabling it, but that doesn't really stop processes from running. Of course there's taskiller and autostarts but how about a rom that is vanilla 2.1 for Evo 4G??
I've found that battery life GREATLY improves when all that HTC crap is killed.
yesterday i had 15 hours and was at 20% yet.. and that was after pandora, mp3, cellmapper (runs continually on way home from work for 30 min)
What are you looking to get out of the phone? 2-3 days? I carry an extra battery just in case
This isn't my first Android phone, no I'm not expecting 2-3 days. One FULL day would suffice. My Moto Droid overclocked to 800Mhz, can last through the entire day sometimes no charge required until the next morning. Something on par with that would suffice. I need to be able to use my phone as I normally would (i.e. like my Droid) without disabling Wifi and BT. 4G is always disabled on my phone.
My point is, I've found it's all the HTC widgets, and garbage running the background that's really putting a dent in the battery. If we had a Vanilla Android rom (for those who want it, I'm sure i'm not the only one) I think we'd see a lot better battery life.

I did remove a few apps from my phone last night.. make sure you have a nand backup before you do anything.. i needed to do a restore
Thanks, good stuff. Did you get those 15 hrs before or after you removed apps from that link you provided.
This is always going to be asked. If someone doesn't have a phone with HTC Sense UI then they want it and mod their phone to look like Sense UI. If someone has it stock on their phone then they want it off. Its just the way it goes. It does eat more battery running but it looks great to most people.
I believe we are waiting for HTC to release the kernel source before an AOSP ROM is ported.
I'd LOVE a vanilla EVO ROM. Coming from ADP1 > Droid > N1, the EVO doesn't even feel like an android device to me.
Use AutoKiller or Auto Memory Manager and not a "taskkiller". Taskkillers can do more harm than good. Example: You have it set to keep killing off a program that is restarted over and over thus killing battery. Set Autokiller to Extreme and enjoy hardly any apps running once they finish. Also, have you tried not syncing so often ie mail/Facebook/Peep/Twitter? The HTC stuff shouldn't be using enough to make a noticeable difference. Or at least, I don't notice anyways. Also, turn off "Always On Mobile Network". That, hands down, is the best thing you can do to save battery. Next would be Location. Turn off Wirelesss Networks. Use the GPS option. I leave mine ON all the time. It only really turns on when you are using it or an app needs it and then it turns off. It doesn't use as much juice as the Wireless Network option.
But if you want to disable HTC Sense, download an app called Home Switcher from the Market. Set the default to "Home". Click Launch. Enjoy.

But of course, that does absolutely nothing to actually disable Sense. NOTHING you can do will disable it. This is just using an alternate home launcher instead of Rosie from Sense, but you still have all of Sense's parts running in the background and heavily integrated into the OS.b

Not completely true. Once Android realizes that Sense is not doing anything it stops it. Somethings you can't stop. But the OP wanted Sense off.

Linpack while using Sense as your home screen results in high 4s
Linpack while using AWD Launcher as home screen results in ~6.9s
I understand what you're saying about Sense being built into the framework, and I agree with you. I don't like it either. But using an alternate home app does make a difference.
I have a rom I am working on. I have removed sense and all sprint apps. It runs a lot faster and battery is a lot better.

[Q] Remove 'Garbage' Widgets

I applied the latest RUU for the Droid Incredible (November 2010 Edition). In the past, I always updated the phone, Got Root Access and performed a Nandroid Backup before removing all the Bloatware/Crapware on my phone.
However, this time I am getting very different results.
After the Nandroid, I delete everything I don't want via Root Explorer. I would delete the obvious ones such as City ID, VZ Nav, Teeter, and a bunch of HTC widgets like Footprints, Contacts Calculator, etc.
I was told that if I go into my settings and 'Clear Data' on HTC Sense that it will get rid of the shortcut to the deleted widgets on the Add Widget Window. It always worked in the past except not on this release.
I have reinstalled the RUU several times to make sure it wasn't a n installation error (of course I am performing a wipe). Any one have any suggestions.
Also is there an updated list of what programs are safe to remove?
Thanks.
Why not flash a "senseless ROM"? there are a number of them out there. You lose the stock Rosie and are forced to use either ADW or Launcher Pro. They alsy delete many of the things you have no interest in keeping.
Just another option.
Because I like Sense. I love the HTC Calendar Widget, HTC Clock Widget (with the full screen weather animation), HTC Tip Calculator and the stock HTC Keyboard (Hence why there is also an equal amount of Sense ROMs out there too).
Nothing I have seen out there comes close to what I like.
I've always just used the system app remover from the market

Edit: No doesn't work. I uninstalled System App Remover and Got Refunded. It looks like it can't be done because even the Virtuous ROM has the same issue. Oh well maybe in time someone will figure it out.

I would try removing the apps with Titanium Backup if you haven't. That's what I normally use to remove bloatware. If you "Freeze" the apps, the widgets may be removed, also.
Also, could someone let me in on the secret for adding a custom signature with my ROM/Kernel/Radio/Phone/etc.? I'm new to XDA.
The widgets are gone it's the shortcut for them that need to be removed. RMK had a method of removing these prior to Froyo update 1 which doesn't work anymore.
If you know what the app names are, you can use 7 zip to remove the apk's from the app folder before flashing the Rom.

It works. It gets rid of the garbage shortcuts now. However, you can't put widgets on your homescreens anymore. Very weird. Because the widgets I want to put on my screen are installed.

I'll give that a shot too. However, without even doing it, I think it won't work because of the SQL entries left behind.
I am just being real anal. The garbage widgets shouldn't bother me but I want it to be clean.

Touchwiz forgetting app drawer layout?

Several times I have edited my app drawer order, grouping apps by type on each page (a page for games, a page for internet stuff, a page for utilities, etc.), creating folders, etc. Then I hit Menu > Save, and everything is fine, until I reboot my phone. Then it loses the app order, and a few apps get seemingly randomly moved to their own pages, so the total number of pages grows from about 5 to upwards of 8 or 9. It seems like the most recently added apps get moved, but not always. I move them all back how they should be, but they only stay until a reboot.
Anyone else have this happen? Or better, found out why? Or even better, how to make them stay?
Really? Does nobody sort their apps? Or nobody has had this problem?

I don't sort them in the App Drawer. I leave them arranged alphabetically grid or list. I do arrange the ones I most often use somewhere on the 7 Home Screens though.
They will not stay. It is an annoying problem. I use folders now to group my apps. And I have my apps sorted to stop the spacing issue.

Still happening on Starburst ROM 1.5, so the problem it's with TouchWiz and is not ROM-specific.
I made a backup of TWLauncher with Titanium, so when my drawer gets really messed up I restore data from the backup (killing the running process) and it does restore my app layout as it was when I made the backup. Not a solution, but a lot quicker than re-sorting 50 apps. If only I could figure out how to trigger a save of the layout...it seems to just do it occasionally and I can't figure out what triggers it (certainly not when the Save button gets pressed...as if that makes sense).
Had anyone replicated this issue on TouchWiz 3.5? (or is it 4.0... whatever the flashable one is that's newer than what ships with the device).
I know what u mean but for me its all good after i fix it a second time untill i change then itll revert to just before i changed
It only happened to me on 4.5 thiugh

Bummer. Guess we have to wait for an official update to get an updated launcher.
are you saving the changes ?
You have to make your changes then hit menu again and save changes.
otherwise they don't stick.
after clicking save don't press anything for 30 secs or so

Okay, I'll do some organizing and give that a try.
hi all,
after updating my galaxy s2 from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 with kies, i had the same problem about sorting applications page.
i didnt reset my phone before or after updating with kies. first i tought that i might be about this. i was looking for a solution and i read these posts. without resetting my phone i just tried to delete files of TW Launcher.
Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All(tab)
find and tap "TW Launcer"
tap "Clear data" button.
after that my home screen and applications screen look default.
applications screen sorted alphabetical.
i customized my home and app screen again and till now didnt change anyting, i mean didnt forget the layout of apps.
i wanted to share this little unprofessional solution with you =)
if there is a better way i want to learn.
finally i have a question, after updating to 2.3.5, when i tap contacts, it opens slowly, after 1 or 1.5 seconds lag(black screen) it opens. but not always. it happens just sometimes.
do you have the same behaviour?
sory for my english. looking forward to see your answers or comments.

14th post,

I'm really surprised I haven't seen more people complaining about it but I guess most are not running TouchWiz.
To re-explain the problem I'm having..
You arrange all the applications in different panels the way you want (after you hit "applications" not the home screen panels)
After turning the phone off and on again Or plugging it in to the computer via USB and removing it, all the applications are a mess again. Not the way you arranged them and there doesn't seem to be any logic behind it.
It's not just the way they were the last time you turned the phone off or the last time you plugged in the USB cable.
I also thought having folders in an earlier panel may be causing later panels apps to get bumped around but I've tried it with the folders in the last panel and I get the same randomness.

You could try a factory reset but you will lose app data. You may also try going to Rosie in your apps and clear defaults and do it on adw as well then kill Rosie and when you go to your home screen it will ask which one you want to use and select it adw and set as default. This may or may not work.
Found the solution, after updating it made HTC Sense the default so I had to find it in app management then change it to Adw.Launcher. The annoying thing is that I lost all the info in the process.
Thanks for your help.

[Q] Having issues with launchers...

Just got my galaxy s3 today. Been messing with it sense. Unfortunately i've had issues with some launchers and I don't know why. Apex/Nova/Holo have all been giving issues in the terms of putting down Widgets at the home screen. All three will tell me that there isnt enough room on the page for the widget when that same page is completely blank.
Another issue i had was super lagginess. I haven't rooted yet because im still kinda noobish and i dont want to do anything derpy to the phone. And i wanted to give touchwiz at least a little bit of time. Aside from that though ive been installing and un-installing launchers like mad and im still getting a bit of lag from switching between pages for an example. Ive got scroll effects turned off and speed nearly all the way up (or low in Apex i think) and its still feeling sluggish.
Was wondering what recomendations you guys could give. Like i said i want to stay stock for a bit...at least until cm comes out
When you reboot the phone, do you get the prompt that asks you what program you want to use (for the launcher)? Select your desired launcher, and press Always.
Yea I get that option and ive placed it for my holo launcher but for whatever reason apex and nova were giving me issues like lag and starting to fc things. Was just curious if any one knewbl what was up. Any good launches you would recommend?

Going to ask something slightly noobish but how do I make one of the launchers a system app? Im still stock at the moment so im trying to figure out whats going on.
I did a full wipe just now and its sill giving me issues that there isnt enough room on the page for the upload of the widget. All im trying to do is upload a stock digital clock widget and its giving me issues in both apex and holo. Is it because they might be touchwiz widgets and the launchers aren't recognizing them? I dont know if that could be the issue but like I said im still stock. Now that i look at it though I may have to root my phone sooner than I wanted. Been on battery for three hours and im already discharged at 51% grr..:crying:

Q: I can't add widgets to my homescreen from the Widgets tab of the drawer. Help!
A: In order to use the in-drawer widgets feature, you have to either enable the Root Helper from advanced settings or install Apex Launcher as a system app (instructions below), both of which require root on your device. This is due to limitations of the Android framework, so there is no way we could change this requirement. If you have just installed it as a system app and still cannot add widgets from the drawer, please reboot your device and try again. If you do not have root access, you may still add widgets from the system widget picker. Just long press on the homescreen and choose "Widgets" from the popup list.
