@ROM chefs: Standardized Naming for F/W releases - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Hi all you chefs out there.
As you all know the SGS is an awesome. Awesome devices have the tendency to get lots of chefs cooking even more ROMs.
In order to keep F/Ws and new releases managable it is handy to have a standard naming system for the threads in which the ROMs are released. This works best if we start sticking to one standard as early as possible because it's hard to adapt once you have 50+ ROMs threads. So here is my proposal:
[%variant% ~ %region%] [dd/mm/yy] %Name% {%version%} [%Androidbuild% ~ %baseROM%] {%launcher%} %mchangelog% [%specialfeature%]
Variables as follows:
%variant% - Not very useful right now since we can only use update.zip. Will become important once we get complete android builds (Update or Firmware)
%region% - If this is an update.zip the region of base firmware. If you focus your ROM on a specific language/country put it here.
%Name% - Name of your ROM. Whatever you want to call it.
%version% - The version of your ROM.
%Androidbuild% - This is the basebuild of android that the firmware uses. 2.1-update1 for the firmwares we have available right now. (Make it short: 2.1-u1)
%baseROM% - This is the last five symbols of the firmware you base your ROM on/that is required to install your update.zip. for example: XWJG3
%launcher% - This is the launcher you use (preferably with the version used).
%mchangelog% - Give one or two of the most important changes in this update.
%specialfeature% - One special feature of your ROM. Barebone or Online kitchen or something like that qualifies
Just some examples based on the available ROMs
[Update ~ Europe] [11/07/10] Doc's BareboneGalaxy {v.6} [2.1-u1 ~ XWJG3] {LauncherPro BETA} Optimized APKs [Barebone]
[Update ~ Arabic] [11/07/10] ??? {v1.1} [2.1-u1 ~ XWJG3] {TouchWiz3.0} ??? [FullArabic]
(Sorry for the questionmarks. I don't speak/read arabic. I wish I could :/)
[Update ~ Europe] [06/07/10] MoDaCo {r2} [2.1-u1 ~ XWJG1] {TouchWiz} JG1/SwypeFix [OnlineKitchen]
It's just a suggestion for the chefs obviously but it would be great if you guys could do this for us. Makes choosing a suitable ROM a lot easier.
PS: Anything I missed/you would like to see in the 'standard'? Don't hesitate to post

Very good idea, coming from the Nexus One dev thread - they too seemed to have adopted this method of displaying their ROMs, Themes, etc and it makes everything much easier to find and navigate. So i really do hope everyone follows this standard.

Exactly my idea. Coming for the HTC Topaz section, I know what it's like to have everybody just used their own design to get attention. It's annoying and makes searching unnecessarily difficult.
@Chefs: PLZZZ use this ;-)

I agree completely.

Good idea with creating a standard for thread titles.
Thus I'll use it

We really need a mod. *bump*

^^^ I second that !

Needs another bump again :S

*minibump*

One way or the other, this is going into the [READ ME] sticky, so this thread is closed.

Modular, GUI, Easily Updatable Kitchen

Hey, I was wondering, is there anyone else who would like to see a GUI Kitchen with support for multiple devices as modules( compatibility packs if you want to call 'em that ), and that would fetch packages from a central repository?
It would allow you to create a new project, choose from several target devices, if it's not on the list it would fetch a list from the server allowing you to download the module, some modules could have a 'supported devices list' on its description files.
The packages would work the same way, fetch the list, download package.
Auto-update for everything including the kitchen itself.
IMHO it's a great idea, there's currently lots of file duplication/scattering, it would also be great because chefs would only need to create packages, base roms, developers would create the device modules, I mean, it's simpler.
Users would have the choice of picking a base rom, selecting the packages from the menu and create their own rom configurations, thousands and thousands of them, no more complaining about softwareXXX being or not included on the final rom and creating a rom with updated software would be as simple as "Update>Packages" "Project>Rebuild".
Even if the final product has a price( :X ) I think it is worth it.
You bet I would.
we're the only ones though

Yeah, that's a nice set of tools and batch files.
There's also a multi-device version here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324680
It isn't hard to use, and it's quite complete in terms of functionality, plus, the method he used to make it multi-device is nice, you only need to change one line and it's done, all the parameters for a specific device are on a separate conditional batch file.(tho I tested it and it didn't work, previous CORE kitchens worked nice)
But the ideal would be something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=304461
To be available to public and have all the functionality of the CORE kitchens.
btw, I don't think this is a noob vs pro issue, the kitchen I try to describe in the 1st post would centralize all packages, and IMHO is something the whole xda-devs needs.

READ THIS BEFORE POSTING! FAQ

This FAQ will be updated as more common questions are found!
I hope this will help cut down the number of threads that just pop up with the same old questions! PM me or post if you have something that you think should be added.
Made sure you have the newest .net frameworks installed on your computer before you try to do anything!
You can get it here!
Custom RRU and other things will NOT run without this installed on the computer you are trying to flash from.
Basic Troubleshooting and how to ask questions
¤Do these first
Soft reset your device
Check there is no other programs conflicting
Check if there is a newer version of your program that fixes the bugs, same goes for roms.
¤How to ask questions
If all else fails and you need to ask a question, at least do it in a way that makes it easy for us to help you.
Tell us what rom you are running.
What radio you are running
The above two points is why most people have there device info in there sigs.
Dont just say "it doesn't work" tell us what happens, is there any errors?
What have you done to try to fix it? Have you googled and checked this FAQ first?
What device do you have? The Hermes comes under many different names, tell us
Anything else you think that might help, the more info we have the better!
Roms
¤I want a rom, where can I find the best roms?
See this sticky here or see the list below this FAQ that zocster will be starting and maintaining (Should be more upto date).
¤I want a fast rom! Give me SPEED!
You can see here for some info,
And here is my own benchmark thread
¤English isnt my native language, are there roms out there in other languages?
This is an english forum, but there are roms cooked for other languages, here is a Spanish rom and a polish rom, finaly, schaps's roms are available in English and French
Also, here is a thread for a Japanese rom
And now a Italian rom
And a beta of a Czech rom
A cab patch for Chinesein WM6
If you want to do it yourself, You can translate WM into your own language, here though this thread isnt much help for the average user.
¤Will this rom work on my AT&T 8525/ect?
The first thing you see under the devices HTC codename is the list of names its sold under, YES the 8525 is a Hermes!
¤What version of hardSLP do i need? Whats it do?
HardSPL helps prevent bricking your phone though bad blocks, and superCID’s your phone to allow you to flash a custom Rom. Get it here
¤Where do I find my carriers “shipped” rom? And what is it?
This is a rom that a carrier puts out rather than a cooked (custom) one, see here
¤Whats RBSC/RBSC/NBSC/NBCN mean?
RBSC - Real Big Storage Compressed
¤ More storage space than normal
¤ Extra storage space because of being compressed
¤ More snappy and responsive
¤ Less stable
¤ Requires the installation of an original carrier ROM before installation in order to avoid system freeze and spontaneous Hard Resets
¤ No extended ROM
RBSN - Real Big Storage Normal
¤ More storage space than normal
¤ No Extra storage space because of being compressed
¤ More snappy and responsive
¤ Less stable
¤ Requires the installation of an original carrier ROM before installation in order to avoid system freeze and spontaneous Hard Resets
¤ No extended ROM
NonRBSC - Non Real Big Storage Compressed
¤ Doesn't have more storage space than normal
¤ Extra storage space because of being compressed
¤ Not so snappy and responsive
¤ More stable
¤ Doesn't require the installation of an original carrier ROM before installation in order to avoid system freeze and spontaneous Hard Resets
¤ Extended ROM
NonRBSN - Non Real Big Storage Normal
¤ Doesn't have more storage space than normal
¤ No extra storage space because of being compressed
¤ Not so snappy and responsive
¤ More stable
¤ Doesn't require the installation of an original carrier ROM before installation in order to avoid system freeze and spontaneous Hard Resets
¤ Extended ROM
To check if your rom is BS look in settings/system/memory ... if it is big storage it will have over 70 mb Free program memory.
When you are flashing your shipped rom, use dutty's good NHB tool to extract the carriers NBH, then put it back together without the radio, due to the dangers of flashing your radio over and over again. "nbhtool.exe" which is the tool, is attached zipped to the last post.
or here is the rom with the radio striped out (by me).
I myself use this, and im not on AT&T.. it was just the first stock rom I downloaded and stripped, it really doesnt matter where you live. The reason for doing this, is its quicker, you dont need to reflash the radio( Just the OS and extended rom), and radio flashing can also lead to bricks if you get an error midflash!
See here for more info
You should do this everytime you move from a bigstorage rom to another bigstorage, you will be fine going stock --> bigstorage, and you should be fine going bigstorage --> normal cooked, but sometimes its better safe than sorry! (I flash shipped when im planning on keeping a rom for some time, even if im going to a non BS cooked)
¤What is a "naked"/"lite" rom?
This means that the rom is as "lite" as possible, that it doesn't contain any/much extra software, normally designed to give you as much program and storage memory, to allow you to load the apps you want to use rather than using what the chef thinks are the best.
Radios
¤Will flashing a new radio solve my problems with Wifi/slow SMS/poor signel/Slow 3G?
Your radio rom only affects GSM/UTMS signal quality and speed, as well as call drop-outs can be palatially due to having a old radio. So, if your having slow 3G, poor signal, or lots of drop-outs, look into flashing a new radio.
¤Whats the best radio rom for me?
This depends, on where you live and what carrior, lots of people like the newest radio here and there is a thread about the radios that use the least power here.
¤Where do I find a radio rom?
All radios are here
¤Is flashing a Radio rom more dangerous than flashing a rom? If so, why and what can i do to protect myself as much as i can?
Yes, a lot more, if the flash gets interupted you could brick your radio. The best way to flash a radio is via the SD card method (see flashing section of this FAQ).
¤Noo! Im to late, my radios bricked, what do i do?
Well, see this thread here for help unbricking.
¤Best radio for XXXX countery
Best radio for South Africa
Best radio for Belgium
Flashing
¤How do I Flash a rom?
You need to flash HardSPL first, then download a custom rom of your choice, and flash via the Custom RRU or the SD card method.
¤What is the SD card method?
This is flashing your rom from your SD card, this is safer than using a USB cable, as there is less chance of disconnection ect. See here here
¤DAM! My phones broken, but I need to send it back to my carrior/ect for warranty, Dam how do i restore my phones SPL ect?
See mrvanx's guide on this here
¤My phones a brick! something went wrong, help!
This is a list of all the brick types that are known and how to fix them
¤Im geting random hard resets and other bugs, and im using a BS rom, whats wrong?
You didnt read the advice in post #1, flash a stock rom, for example this stripped one.
¤Why does this happen?
The idea floating around, and as explained by mrvanx is that as we are abusing the area of memory that is normally the extended rom, the memory setup gets a bit messy, so flashing a stock rom with extended rom overwrites everything back to how it was supposed to be, helping to improve stability. A stock rom is like a spring clean for the phone.
Bugs, Fixes, and Tweaks
¤Help, my 8525’s keyboard is wrong, what do i do? / How do I change advanced settings? / I want my keyboard to be in the German style.
Get Schap’s Advanced configuration Tool from here and here is a post with a cab for German keyboard layout.
¤What's the page pool? What does it do? How do I change it?
The page pool is Ram that windows uses as a cache, the more you have the faster windows should be running apps, but the less memory you will have for programs. Most roms come with a 6meg pool. To change the page poll BEFORE you flash the rom, use this tool, you cant change the page pool post flash.
Also see this thread for a good discussion on the topic

¤Why doesn’t my hardware keyboard work in landscape mode with opera moble?
This version of Opera is so far the only one I have found that works with the keyboard, Thanks Josh!
Or you can use this newer version which has full keyboard support.
I use Build 1957 myself, as i find the newer 2000+ builds do not support the landscape keyboard again (I have tried both of the builds at there at time of writing this).
¤But thats an old version of Opera mobile! I want a newer one!
Download this for build 1930 or this for build 1780, extract the 3 EXE's and replace the once in /windows with them (After you install the cab of cause)
Or you can use this cab to update to build 1938!

¤Help! My wifis messed up, on any cooked WM6 or WM6.1 after install, i turn on wifi, and it gets garbled settings from the router, acquires bogus IP, then disconnects right after, what do i do?
This seems is to-do with a driver issue, see this thread for more info and it seems the cab "HTC_Hermes_WiFi_drivers.cab" fixes this as seen in this post of the thread the cab is also attached to post #4 of this thread.
¤My Hermes wont change from this random USB cable? Why?
This is because HTC uses custom wiring in cables that come with the phone, it seems to work if you plug it in and then soft reset with the cable still in.
¤Im having problems with syncing with acticesync via bluetooth, what do i do?
This seems to have been resolved in this post here.
¤My WMP is acting odd, and using up loads of ram, then being closed due to not enough ram, whats going on?

¤I am getting random crashes and hard resets, I have flashed a big storage rom! whats wrong?
You more than likerly didn't follow the doctors orders, see here for more info.
¤Im having Problems getting Activesync to connect to my phone, what do I do?
Go to Start > settings > connections > USB to PC and untick "Enable advanced network functionality" If this fails remove all partnerships, reset device and computer, and try again.
And if you have Windows vista, Try downloading the newest WMDC 6.1, making sure to uninstall the old one before you install.
¤Im having problems with the custom RUU, its flashing up errors/not running.
You need to install the latest .net framework, run windows update to get it.
¤I cant get YahooGo! To run, it just crashes, what should I do?
It seems YahooGo doesn't like CF3.5, see this thread here for a fix
¤My phone says I have unread SMS even when I dont! What do I do?
This post here should help fix it.
¤Does the Hermes support SDHC cards (4gig and up micro SD)?
Yes, in some WM6 and 6.1 roms that add the drivers to support it, but this is only in software, the bootloader doesn't support them, so you cant flash from a SDHC card.
¤How can i toggle Silent mode on and off with the com manager button?
Cab in this thread.

A few very common terms:
Flashing: To flash a new rom/radio means to basicly install a new OS
HardSPL: HardSPL is a a patched and hacked bootloader which alows us to run unsighed code (custom roms), and superCID our devices
Custom rom: A rom made my a chef rather than put out by HTC or another OEM
OEM/shipped rom: a stock rom that came from a carrior or HTC
Radio rom: This rom controlls the GSM part of your phone, and ONLY the GSM radio, flashing this WONT help with wifi/bluetooth problems, they are driver based (aka the rom you have on your phone)
A brick: A phone that has had a problem during flashing, and is only usefull as a brick, aka its non fuctional
A list of basic Acronyms
And here is a very comprehensive Glossary

My to-do list:
Measure Idle and full speed file download power consumption on a few radios (new Thread)(This isnt going to get done I dont think.. to much risk flashing all the radios myself.. and it varies so much across the world..)
Radio Example:
Radio: 1.47.30.10
Location: England, East Anglia
Carrier: T - Mobile
Signal when testing: 4bars HSDPA
Rom: CRC V12.9BS Naked
Idle consumption: 40mA (leave the phone in the same place for 5min ish and take the average)
Radio on idle consumption: dial upto 3g then leave the phone in the same place and take the average.
Load consumption:415mA (use the dsl report mobile speed test, 1 meg file, and watch the meter, take the highest it goes)
Any notes: Kept poping between 3G and HSDPA.
I hope Im not going to upset/offend anyone with this, im just looking to make a roundup of all the info out there, and put down answers to all the questions I had when I first for my device, I know the radio testing has been done before, but it seems mrvanx has left us, or is leaving us for the Touchpro.
If this has helped you, or you like what I do, pleases consider sending me a small donation, any amount is very gratefully received.
Awesome effort
Hope one of the mods will make this a sticky, as most punters don't like reading, and don't go to wiki. Also translators would be helpful. I speak English and Indonesian/ broken Malay. Anyway as we are trying to keep this thread as UP TO DATE as possible, I am going to post the most recent and active chefs on the hermes forum.
RIP Marahox - he has left us for the raphael (traitor! ) anyway hope you enjoy your new toy buddy.
The latest 20753 by DVH - as this is the most recent build that the chefs here have managed to port, this is a super storage ROM, and possibly compressed, so if you are not adventurous, don't go this way.
PDA Corner 20748 - latest build, with a variety of flavours, for the adventurous and the conservative (being super storage, compressed, and normal) if you like older builds you can go to his old thread.
Starbase64 thanks for the great ROM and excellent cabs collection! And starbase's new release here!
CRCinAU 20270 Development ROM and CRCinAU 20270 gone stable ROM - this guy never cease to amaze me. Stable and fast ROM, with intuitive device update wizard.
I wish to extend my warmest welcome to two new chefs!
Anryl and JoshKoss new talents that the hermes world are happy to have!
Geez don't these two newbies ever sleep? Anryl just came up with a new 20748 build already, and so has joshkoss, ... their wives need to strap them to a chair?
Anryl has a CZ project going, visit here, for those come from CZ!
And how can I forget our order what you want chef, kareem9nba that is when he gets his laptop back, hopefully later this week!
And for those wanting some international flavour
Here is a Polish and a Spanish ROM (which I believe he is no longer cooking for the hermes either), and before you know it a new chef comes out with ITALIAN Rom
I am looking forward to some old chef that are returning, I can't mention names. If you are looking for an older ROM, don't forget to visit the first sticky!
so you've made it... thanks! I hope this will put an end to the endless tiny questions... if any need for translations is required, I might help with German and Arabic. thanks again

ok, of course you can... just translate it into Korean and we will be thankful to you.
Well Done!! Hopefully this will eliminate tons of duplicate threads and questions...
Oh, WWE is the forum language!
Im working my ass off Its almost done! (for the time being)
Anyone feel like starting off doing benchmarks for each rom? I might do, unless someone else feels like going into a flashing frenzy, with sktools lite, fresh flash, unpluged, and no activesync running!

The human body is weak anyway, tonight I shall benchmark all the roms in your list and the sticky, and make a new thread, and write a biology paper, and start on the radios

[Q] ROM backup + why win ce 5.2

Hi all.
This will be my first post in this forum, but sadly I think this subject been up here before. I've been searching these forums and the wiki for some time now and it's ALOT of information here... GREAT WORK! by the way.
But I can't really find any guide that describes why I should do a ROM update. I have learned how to flash the ROM, and that ROM's differs in speed, stability and so on.
Questions I haven't find any clear answers to:
- Clear description on how to backup the original ROM with radio (without SD-card)
- Why tf3d config themes won't work on 1.93 ROMs
- Why does many ROMs uses Win CE 5.2 instead of 6.1?
- Howto backup manila (TF3D) incase of upgrade to manilaHD?
Best regards
Bunnny

i'll share what i know -
1 - as far as i know, there is no way of "backing up" the existing rom, there is a ROM roll up thread here and also a radio sticky - so you see what stock ROM & radio you have and download it and keep it with you (on your computer)
2 - no idea, don't use themes
3-
windows 6.1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Mobile
windows CE 5 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_CE_5.0
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WindowsCE
one is the OS other is the platform.
4 - same as (1) above
i change ROMs because of speed & stability... some do it because of APPS, others because of support... it's what makes you comfortable that counts
hope this helps

Ahh, I see (#3), thanks for your reply.
Sadly I havent found my original ROM here.
My OP is 3 sweden and this ROM (1.93.774.3) is not available in the wiki, maybe HTCs ROM (1.93.413.3 SWE) is no loss?
EDIT: Never mind found the rom on the forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2572811 (page 7)

Well you are not helping, neither with my questions or the traffic.
As I wrote in my post I've been searching and still am.
Now it's just question 2 left. And Im glad to say that I have sucessfully flashed my ROM, but I couldn't use HardSPL OliNex138 instead I used Jockyw2001's 1.24

Difference between ROM's

Hello,
because for a noob like me, it's very difficult to see the differences between ROM's, I want some hints and advice for this.
I noticed the ROM of Shady and the ROM of Emrulez. For me the difference is not clear.
Can someone compare those ROM's please?
Also the word kitchen isn't clear .... :$
There is no differences. You should say Kudos to Microsoft for these ROMs and their effort. The cookers here only add and delete programs using kitchen.
thats my question, whats the difference.
nobody?:s ...
Yes it is a good question.
I am trying to figure it out myself.
At the moment, only thing that I am certain about, is that build number is different
is there any difference about battery drain ?
well the build number is like an update of the windows, higher build >>more recent release.
and roms differs with stability, free ram, storage, bugs, addons
that's why every1 r keep trying till he got the rom he like.
and about the battery drain,, they r differs too, since some have a UI interface which drains battery and other background processes assuming they use the same radio version since the radio version is one of the important things with battery drains.
to build a rom u need to build a kitchen with by it u can do it... there some ppl who like to share their kitchens to make any1 can modify the rom with his needs.. but to do that u have to know a few things
hope this helped
maybe it's a good idea if someone (I? ) creates a new topic with a Rom-overview?
The first message will show all the ROMS with the following info:
Date of last update
Windows version, build number
Programs added
Programs deleted
Free Memory
Bugs
Link to the topic
...?
Based on that message, users can choose their favorite ROM. I do not want to make a competition of this, only make it user friendly to choose.

Hello thanks for your information. So there is no general kitchen which i can use to modify the ROMs? has every ROM it own kitchen? And I wonder where the people always get the new OS versions since I never seen you can download them at Microsoft or so....
@ babbelut
well yes i think cud be so helpful too , but i think it's too hard specially when a lot of roms r being created !!
@ TalhaX
well ya there is no a general kitchen, each cooker has his own kitchens some share it as u can find.
u can build ur own kitchen or use one of these kitchens,,, couple of days ago a saw a kitchen called superjustkitchen i think this may help u.. i don't know about these stuff. and where from they came with these builds but u can search here,,, and if r planning to do this make sure of what u r doing
I've made a wikipage:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=XDA_ROMS
Please feel free to contact me or add some ROMS !!
It's not so wise to make such a page. ROM i for specific device and will not work on other.
Here is a page for Artemis
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Artemis
and you should make your subpage there.
I use xdadevelopers many years and it's sad that everyone works alone on ROMs. There are only a few people owning each model and doing their own kitchen/ROMs. They should work together to make one, best kitchen, and set of quality ROMs.
Now we have for example SHADY's kitchen which is probably very good, but ROMs have many bugs. And there is nobody who can fix them, because Shady don't have time, and others fix their own ROMs. And now we have new build and new kitchen and new ROM and new bugs. Yes, they are the newest, have all bells & whistles, but are useless because of bugs
I'm looking to replace my Touch ROM, which were very good, but author has abandoned it.
it is a subpage of artemis, not?

[READ ME] Android Development section

(shamelessly copied and then modified from junkdruggler's post here)
This is a DEVELOPMENT section, not GENERAL. Do NOT post questions here!
Before continuing, read this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729511. It also contains a link to XDA's rules, read those as well !
Let's try to post our ROMs and threads the following way to make the forum quicker and easier to access:
Code:
[KITCHEN][WWE][08.08.08] KOKOTAS ELF(in) Hybrid Kitchen (version 1.3)
[PRJ][WWE][BETA] BRAM / NOONSKI Touch Surface 6.1 Public Beta Release Candidate Unskinned
[REF] NOONSKI Cooking Class Class of 2008/09
[UPG] HTCTOUCHP New USPLs & IPLs for Elf & Elfin
[ROM][EUR][UPD][11-07-10] Doc's BareboneGalaxy v6 [2.1-u1~XWJG3][LauncherPro BETA] Optmized APKs [Barebone]
[ROM][ARA][UPD][11-07-10] ??? v1.1 [2.1-u1~XWJG3][TouchWiz 3.0] ??? [FullArabic]
[ROM][EUR][UPD][06-07-10] MoDaCo r2 [2.1-u1~XWJG1][TouchWiz] JG1/SwypeFix [OnlineKitchen]
For ROM releases, use:
Code:
[ROM][%region%][%variant%][dd-mm-yy] %name% %version% [%Androidbuild%~%baseROM%][%launcher%] %mchangelog% [%specialfeature%]
Variables as follows:
%region% - If this is an update.zip the region of base firmware. If you focus your ROM on a specific language/country put it here. Use abbreviations: EUR (Euro), ARA (Arabic), USA (United States)
%variant% - Not very useful right now since we can only use update.zip. Will become important once we get complete android builds. Use abbreviations: UPD (Update), FW (Firmware)
[ROM][EUR][UPD][11-07-10] Doc's BareboneGalaxy v6 [2.1-u1~XWJG3][LauncherPro BETA] Optmized APKs [Barebone]
[ROM][ARA][UPD][11-07-10] ??? v1.1 [2.1-u1~XWJG3][TouchWiz 3.0] ??? [FullArabic]
[ROM][EUR][UPD][06-07-10] MoDaCo r2 [2.1-u1~XWJG1][TouchWiz] JG1/SwypeFix [OnlineKitchen]
For upgrade tools (HSPL, SSPL, CID, SIM, etc.), use:
Code:
[UPG] Description
For complete kitchens, use:
Code:
[KITCHEN][Language] name and version (Build)
For projects, use:
Code:
[PRJ] description
For utilities, use:
Code:
[UTIL] name and version
For reference threads (tutorials, guides, etc.), use:
Code:
[REF] description
A good start to a good structure
I have tried creating a standard for the ROM naming before but for lack of a sticky, there is so far only one "chef" who uses it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723745
Interesting. I've just copy/pasted a different post who'se layout reminds me of other sections I've moderator, and which will look familiar to users coming from the WM forums to here. I am of course open to suggestions!
Let's discuss, critisize, and formalize. Your way of naming looks smart to me, so let me share my comments.
Your original:

[Update ~ Arabic] [11/07/10] ??? {v1.1} [2.1-u1 ~ XWJG3] {TouchWiz3.0} ??? [FullArabic]
(Sorry for the questionmarks. I don't speak/read arabic. I wish I could :/)

I would keep the [ROM] prefix, just to distinguish it from normal programs, utilities, upgrades, tutorials, etc.
I would also use abbreviations to keep things short, and cut down on whitespace. variant = [UPD/FW], region = [EUR/ARA/USA/....], AndroidBuild / baseROM, without the spacing. To prevent overkill of brackets, I would not bracket the version. Also as we are using dd/mm/yy notation, AFAIK it is more common to use - instead of /. And I really just hate curly brackets, but that's personal
Example:
[ROM][EUR][UPD][11-07-10] Doc's BareboneGalaxy v6 [2.1-u1~XWJG3][LauncherPro BETA] Optmized APKs [Barebone]
Comments ? Suggestions ?

Those sound to me like sensible modifications. Now that I think back on it the curly brackets weren't really necessary ;-) And the date... my version of Windows displays the date as dd/mm/yyyy so I'm really at a loss what is convention here. but it really doesn't matter. I like the dashes too
Alright, updated first post with the changed information.
Structure is badly needed! all people are polluting this forum with topics with only questions!
Nice kang
I think most of what I said came from a stericson post... not sure though... I like READ MEs... and stickies... and FAQs...
I see only 2 ways you are EVER gonna be able to enforce this:
1) you go modo crazy and start deleting/moving stuff massively
tho you might get tired of doing so after a week or 2 ^^
2) you find somone that can modify the vbulletin post/reply form, so that it integrates the exact syntax you'd like ppl to use to post, and deny posts if it's not correctly filled out.
GL
This does not require enforcing, nor is it an exact science.
Conventions like there are used all over XDA and are generally followed. As soon as a number of the top releasers start following it in a subforum, the rest will eventually follow. It will take a while, sure... but it will happen, once the beginners realise that a structured life is a better life.
You have the option to do things nice and structured, or you can make a mess of things, but hey it'll be the mess you have to wade around in
Well said, I like the XDA naming scheme, seems to work well. Is there a mod for this section yet? someone to sticky important posts for now would do
There's an official mod, yes, and there's me. But I'll be off on vacation in a few days, for several weeks ...
Dear Friends.
I am using GoaTrip Rom on my SGS GT i9000. Now that this rom has loads of problems, I want to install Darky's ROM.
Cud somebody help with the procedure to do the needful.
Step by Step procedure will be helpful.
Plz reply to my PM - [email protected]

M Fahim
You need to study the step-by-step of whatever ROM you choose.
