Sooooo I've built a ROM from the AOSP, and a kernel too... - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So should I put it up on here?? It's just my own little build, nothing special, few things removed, some things added, but I don't know if its worth putting it out in the "wild"...
Basically a rooted 2.2-r1 AOSP build (FRF91 gapps), some bits removed, others added, modded my old A2SD+ release from when 2.1 was rooted ages ago (original one to move dalvik-cache across to sd), busybox, su, blah blah... Usual flavours... but I'm still working on it, options, compiles (kernel too, I need to find out how to add UV support, or HAVS if its better?? but have no idea where this information is...)
Don't really want to add too much choice though, there are plenty out there now, so not sure if it's worth releasing it, or just keep it private for me and friends
[to mods] - Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I felt its a Q which needs an A... or an O (opinion)... Feel free to move if required.

[DEV] 23/10 1.2 - MCK - Playing with custom kernels (for the brave!)

As you may know, HTC have just released the kernel source code, and i've been having a play.
Nothing massively exciting yet, but if you want your kernel to feature...
- Additional filesystems (EXT4, NFS, CramFS, SquashFS 4.0)
- Freshly compiled tun.ko module
- CompCache 0.5.4 support
- Required iptables functionality for DroidWall
...then you can install this package over the top of the latest MCR.
This is pretty much untested at the moment, so Nandroid backup first (of course), and i'm taking requests for future improvements. This is seperate from the main MCR thread for now simply because of it's untested nature!
I'd like to add...
- Port to 2.6.29 kernel
...but as I say this is just an early first-stab at a custom kernel. I thought i'd put it out there as I know many people like to run EXT4 on their A2SD partitions.

I'd love to help test this however I'm new to Android so when you say MCR I assume you mean the latest Modaco Rom? So I should install MCR then install this? Sorry and thanks, looking forward to giving it a go
will this have CDMA support by any chance for the CDMA hero?

Well may be it is possible to make clean Android OS available for HTC Hero since kernel sources are released? With no Sense UI etc.

I dont understand all the people not wanting sense UI
if you dont want it, go into settings--------manage applications-----find touch flo and clear defaults....
The next time you press the home button, just press launcher and make it your default home screen.
There you have it...
Sorry Paul for going slightly off topic
Some people do not want it because they find it heavy.
By using the clear defaults method you only visually disabling it, but in the background the sense ui processes are still running.

Ever heard about Paul's Rosie remover? I think what people want is to get features of e.g. Cyanogens work in a ROM, and the ability to modify. In fact if you remove Rosie, add some vanilla android apps and change the Hero drawables in the framwork.apk you'll get a "vanilla" looking and working kind of ROM.

30/Jun r1 (JFB) - MoDaCo Custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy S with Online Kitchen

I'm pleased to present my MoDaCo Custom ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S! READ THIS WHOLE POST BEFORE YOU START! No, really, it contains everything you need to know. wink.gif
This ROM is the 'starting point' for my Galaxy S custom ROMs.
About MoDaCo Custom ROMs
MoDaCo Custom ROMs are based on official ROMs - either shipping or leaked. A MCR release is designed to feel as far as possible like a stock ROM, with optimisations, tweaks and complimentary additions that enhance the user experience. The aim of a MCR is to be ultra reliable for use on an everyday device.
Requirements
In order to use this ROM on your device, YOU MUST ALREADY BE RUNNING THE JFB ROM FROM HERE. Do NOT use this ROM with any other base, unpredictable things will happen, the most likely being you'll have to reflash your device via Odin.
Features Included
* Based on the JFB release
* Rooted with Superuser 2.1 by ChainsDD
* Built with the MCR build process which reduces the size and boosts the speed of the ROM
* busybox with Droid Explorer support
* Updated Google Maps
* MCR version displayed in 'About' screen
* Optional Google Voice Search
* Optional Google Voice Dialer
* Optional Fancy Widget
* Optional Beebplayer
* Optional baked in Wavesecure via the online kitchen (installed to system partition for maximum security)
Changelog
Please see 2 posts below this one for the changes in each release.
Installation
To install this ROM:
* Ensure you have the JFB ROM installed (linked above)
* Download the zip file of your choice from the links below (or the online kitchen) and copy to your SD card named 'update.zip'
* Restart your device in recovery mode by running 'adb reboot recovery' (download adb if you do not have it already, use adb-windows, adb-mac or adb-linux as appropriate)
* Select the option to apply an update zip, and select the zip file you copied to your memory card
Upgrading
No wipe is explicitly required in order to use this ROM, however if you do encounter issues of any kind, it is recommended that you wipe your device and reproduce the issue before raising it here.
Downloads
This ROM is currently only available in the online kitchen - prebakes to follow.
Thanks
It's impossible to mention everyone who contributes to the Android community by name, but to everyone out there who does great work and shares it with us all - you have my gratitude and respect.
And finally...
If you would like to show your appreciation for the ROM, please consider supporting MoDaCo by signing up for a MoDaCo Ad Free or MoDaCo Plus account, both of which also give you early access to Beta ROM releases and access to the the online kitchens.
Enjoy!

Does this ROM fix the ram issue so that all 512MB of ram is utilized?
Congrats on being the first custom rom here.
Congratulations! I don't have a phone yet but I am very pleased to see a custom rom already!
woohoo custom ROMs already. Guess I'll be getting myself the phone after all.
umm.. but in another thread people where saying that it wasn't gonna be possible because samsung encrypt their drivers etc. so this mean they did release they drivers? and there is gonna be alot of custom rooms for galaxy gravity?

No I said it would be near impossible to get roms from other sources like Sense roms or Froyo on because of the driver issue. I never said you would never see custom roms. The only roms you are going to see are one's based off of Samsungs release.
Hold on, hold on. So even though Samsung released the Galaxy S' driver source code to the public, it's going to be "near impossible" to port Sense and FroYo to the phone? I may be ignorant but I'll just ask with ignorance, how do you figure?

Download the source code..... ok now open it and go to GalaxyS_Kernel.tar.gz. Now in there just enter the first folder then go to modules. Go to Dpram. Open up any of those files in notepad. You should see written non-compiled code right? That is fine now go back to the module folders and go to S3cbc. Now open up s3cbc_module.o. Does that look like non-compiled code? No it doesn't. It's either already compiled or encrypted. That's what I mean

Quick question, does that mean any custom rom that is release will be based off the official rom they release which has Touchwiz backed in? If so, does that rule out a plain vanilla android rom for this device? Thanks for your help and appreciate the knowledge.

No it doesn't rule out plain vanilla android rom. Yes they will all be based on Samsung but rom makers can take out all the touchwiz garbage and throw in another launcher like adw or Launcherpro.
That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the help. Now if I only could decide if I should keep the Nexus One or purchase this phone..... Decisions, Decisions.

So they can easily be decompiled? If it's source code why is it already compiled?
dont go too deep into specific things that we may not even need (we are not coders here) but the source code for basic hardware that we need to get things going are already there.. things like camera, wlan, etc. btw, do u know what s3cbc is for?

What about s3clcd? Here is a little copy and paste of some of the garble that was in the compiled file
screen width=%d height=%d va=0x%x pa=0x%x
I would go out on a limb and say those are video drivers. The one's that have been encrypted on all other samsung phones.
Also in s3cbc there is some code at the bottom
PVRSRV_PIXEL_FORMAT_YUY2 PVRSRV_ERROR_FIFO_SPACE char ui32ByteStride psDevInfo PVRSRV_PIXEL_FORMAT_PAL1 PVRSRV_PIXEL_FORMAT_PAL2 pfnOpenBCDevic
If you don't know the Galaxy's gpu is PowerVR SGX540 and YUY2 is a colol format for video screens
http://www.fourcc.org/yuv.php#YUY2 and Pal is of course a European video standard.
they are not encrypted, they are object codes in machine language for arm.. and why we need that again for custom roms?
Wanted to test modaco ROM but they are not free.. Any kind souls upload and share ?

How much free ram have you got? Considering flashing and rooting, but not sure if it's worth it right now. Meh 10£ isn't that much think I'm gonna give it a try.
EDIT: Just flashed, but now I don't have root access(says access denied when I try to access the /data/data folder). Thought this included the rooted PDA file or do I have to flash that again with odin?
EDIT2: Scratch that I forgot to press the allow-button on my phone after sending the Super-user request..

[ROM]Orange Glacier [v2.0.0] -Stock Variant on EXT4 - Faux123 [May-15-2011]

Re-Introduce Orange Glacier 2.0.0
The reason I created this ROM is NOT TO COMPETE with anyone else, it is mainly for myself. I wanted a light weight ROM that's STABLE and FAST but I also wanted to try something slightly different.
I WON'T BE Updating this ROM unless something is Seriously WRONG with it...
(I WON'T BE taking FEATURE REQUESTS and such, most can be added by yourself from various mods found in the Theme and Apps sub forum )
So here it is: Orange Glacier ?!?!?!?
Why the name:
Because ClockworkMod Recovery (3.0.0.5+) for Gingerbread is colored Orange for EXT 4 partitions and since this ROM uses EXT 4 File System (FS) as its primary FS, I decided to name it this way.
So what is in this Orange Glacier?
1. Completely rebuilt from Stock Image
2. Uses exclusively EXT 4 FS
3. Moved all optional Apps to /data/app partition for easy uninstall (including most Google Apps)
4. Rooted, /system set to RW by default
5. Deodexed, Zip aligned all /system/apps and framework files using ROM kitchen from fellow XDA member.
6. Dalvik memory boosted from default 24MB to 36MB
7. Few CFS tweaks
I want to Thank the following:
TeamSilence for inspiring me to start it all,
Pack for the awesome battery mods,
dsixda for the easy to use ROM kitchen (highly recommended to anyone interested in cooking their own ROM, it CAN'T be easier than what he provided)
Installation:
The File ==> Orange Glacier Version 2.0 <==
WARNING: The INSTALLER WILL ERASE ALL USER DATA AND SYSTEM DATA!!!
Requirement: MUST HAVE CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY 3.0.0.5+
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Wipe Cache Partition
3. Install zip from SDCard
4. Once installation is completed, select Reboot System Now
Note: Upon first reboot may take up to 4~6 mins.
The following pre-installed Apps will need to be updated MANUALLY from Market by searching for their names:
Google Search
Youtube
Google Maps
T-Mobile MyAccount
T-Mobile TV
Qik Video Chat
TwonkyMobile
Google Street
All Built-in Games (Monopoly, NFS etc)
or they can all be easily un-installed because they are NO LONGER System Apps.
History:
[ Version 1.0.2 ] (Froyo Based)
Based on Original Stock MySense 2.0 Release
Critical Kernel Patch:
You MUST Apply this PATCH first In order to upgrade your ROM with future kernel updates from me...(You only need to do this EXACTLY 1 time, then afterwards you may update to my new kernel whenever they are available)

There's nothing special about this ROM.. It's mainly stock with the tweaks I mentioned in the OP...
stock is good for my battery i need battery more than fancy animations and all this gingerbread stuff
Sweet! Downloading now. Thanks Faux!
BTW, are there any known bugs/issues Faux?
Everything you have done is so amazing, so everything you do, we would pay special attention~~Tky Faux!!
nothing wrong basically itsstock with a few additions like battery mod and lil visuals here and there and speed up alot i dont feel no lag at all everything works idk bout ffc on qik cause my girl dont have but evrything is good to go
Well, this ROM gives me the best data speeds i have ever had. Unfortunately, every time that i reboot, it erases all of my screens. not sure why and OP says no support for this ROM. So i guess i will flash something else. It pains me to have to give up the data speeds.

He actually stated no support unless something serious is wrong. That seems pretty serious if happening to others as well. I would love to load a "de-bloatwared" stock image with good speed and full functionality. I can't wait to hear more feedback on this one.

[Q] [Q} ROM Vs Theme

Hi Guys,
Kinda n00b question:
Whats the difference between a ROM and a Theme? I'm running SimplyHoney 3.8 on my SGS, which I understand is a ROM. I want to apply a new theme, but from the installation guides it looks like its installing a ROM... so:
1. Will installing a theme wipe my apps and configs?
2. Whats the actual difference?
3. Do I need to get a theme to match my ROM?
I'd really appreciate answers, or directions to where should I ask this.
Many thanks,
SoundFX3D
1. Theme will only affect the appearance.
2. Rom is sort of like a package with all the features and tweaks included by the developer(s) which also has its own theme.
3. In the case of SimplyHoney, its has a blue theme. You can choose to flash another theme if you don't like blue. Just make sure its compatible with your rom version.
And no themes almost never wipe data so all your apps will remain.
Also on the subject of Simply Honey if you install a theme that you don't like or doesn't function as expected you can simply re-flash the Simply Honey rom and it wont wipe as it auto detects. You be right back where you started.
Sent from Simply Honey, Loved by Humans, Envied by Trolls! Using XDA premium of course.
basicly almost all so called roms out there are themes with kernel attached
90% or more files inside their 200mb packages are matching stock ones
but that way new user thinks, hell lot of good job i will donate =)
most of roms claims best stability, best speeds everything best
while speed depends on kernel used and system version basicly
so you have same insides in every each one of them with one of few kernels out there
only thing that difers them is theme used
everything is more or less placebo
Thanks a million u guys
$omator, I think that when you get a room you get a theme + kernel + android stuff + some apps that work well together (or should). So developers should have some credit.
Buy it is true that a 100% real rom is something like cyagonenmod.

well, Only thing I will agrre on is , the kernel builders and themers do NOT get enough credit for there work compare to rom builders, thats sad but again huge 'unknown difference between guy that make the voodoo stuff and guy that just compile it .
For the rest I disagree .. plain and simple , the way the framework files are handled when modified and how junk files/ids values present depends on the builder , the updater script, optimization of pngs, deodexed zip aligned , the init.d script chosen to go with the kernel are 90% of what makes a rom , on first boot when your dalvik is created the rom stability is created, some badly themed apks wont even run on first boot they require already present dex files so the system can correct the errors after the initial first boot (witch is long ) themers dont have to worry about that , but throw there files ina stock deodexed rom and flash iit full wipe letssee if your phoen runs smooth 'just becuz its 'JVQ with the latest OMG kernel.... 10% is placebo no doubt .. certainly not 90%%%
of course they are some rom chefs that take the work of others theme it and call it there ROM thats another story...
btw dont you run stock rooted kernel on odexed rom ??? if so thatwoudl lead me to believe you are VERY biased ....

same with galaxian kernel, it is bunch of features from every other kernel + bugs
bugs that are bugfixed every single day and new final version is delivered, that is said by him the best fastest stable bugfree and so on ....
this guy claimed 170$ for fixing bugs that he have made and that could be ironed in betatesting process if he would conduct one and features from other kernel devs basicly ;]
his thread lacks of current sources - i am suprised that his thread still exists and he is not kicked out

agree about the wipe, does not agree that optimizing zipaligning and all that are necessary
still majority of copied files are intact that is what ive ment
and those roms are basicly themes as if you would take the custom kernel out that is what your left with, a theme - that is my opinion i will try to hold on

or they leave old version of apps just because 'they still work on new version"
what is basicly reverting their theme/rom to a previous firmware revision

[ROM] Stock Extra [XXJVT 2.3.5][26 October]

Description
I made my own ROMs for a while (too many bloated ROMs, or tweaked way too much), but never published them to others. After yesterday when it helped someone I decided that I'll go spend some time and put it up as it might be of use to some more people. But don't expect anything mind blowing. This is a ROM that is meant to be as close to stock as possible, while adding small additions that don't negate the original experience.
Features
Based on XXJVT [Android 2.3.5, Deodexed, Zipaligned, Rooted, Busybox] (thanks to Ramad)
Semaphore 1.8.0 kernel [Voodoo Color/Sound, OC/UV, BLN] (thanks to stratosk, supercurio, Neldar, and Chainfire)
VM heap size set to 32
Hard to kill launcher
AppWidgetPicker (thanks to boombuler)
Camera with low battery and power button hack (thanks to $omator)
Gallery3D without Samsung's low quality tweaks
Microbes and HTC Sense live wallpapers
Extended power menu, CRT-off (thanks to sphinx02)
Stock battery with percentages and green icons on connection to Google services (thanks to $omator and others)
Everything else is stock unless I forgot to mention it...
Download 'Stock_Extra_[XXJVT].zip' (no wipe)
Download 'Stock_Extra_[XXJVS].zip' (wipe)
Instructions
Apply from CWM. Preferable to wipe data/restore factory defaults and wipe cache, but you can try without the former and see what happens. As usual, make a backup beforehand just in case.
Extras
CM7 % Battery for XXJVT (thanks to thanks to $omator)
I didn't add any experimental things, or special tweaks, however I do have a few recommendations; Playing around with the Semaphore application may yield some improvements, converting your file systems to EXT4, and applying the Universal Adrenaline Shot may be of some benefit.
The benchmarks posted have been done under a combination of the previously mentioned tweaks. The numbers themselves don't mean much, but the overall experience is pretty smooth -- even without any tweaks applied as I was told.
Disclaimers
As usual, you are applying the update at your own risk.
ROM re-packaging is not such a difficult process. As such if you wish to donate please consider donating to XDA, or the people who have been credited for the tweaks (amongst the others that I may have missed).
If you ask for additions I may or may not include them in the future, depending on whether I would like to have them or not (remember the original purpose of this ROM in the opening paragraph).

I will rebase it once all the addons are made to be compatible with it. Also forgot to add in the features that it has Gallery3D without Samsung's low quality changes -- so it will be slower, but the pictures will look much better overall.
Per request I also had to rename the name of the ROM, however I'm afraid I won't be uploading the same zip file just with a different file name; next time.
And glad to know that it is to some people's liking
very nice rom . stable and good.
Hi, can i make a special request.
Can you do the same for Asia stock rom DXJV9. European rom does not contain Asian language pack unless you know how to port that into these rom.
Thanks

I'll see what I can do during the weekend, or the end of the week, but no promises. Aren't there any Asians ROMs that have a similar set of features?

Great man. Well, Asian rom is up to Android 2.3.3. I don't understand why Samsung did not release update to 2.3.4, even European rom had breach the 2.3.5 version. It pretty disappointing man.
Nevertheless, thanks for trying.
I'm currently in the process of testing a JVT version, so hopefully in the next few days (or maybe even today) when it proves to be stable and without any glaring mistakes I'll have it uploaded. Until then, sit tight folks.
Awaiting.
Does it come with Asia language pack?

I'm afraid the only Asian language included (that I recognise) is Korean, which by looking at your country's icon is not what you're looking for.
That said, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to make a full version for one of those Asian 2.3.3 firmwares. The mods and tweaks that I rely on are specific to certain firmware versions, as such I wouldn't be able to mix them together.
And I'm afraid I don't have time for the "trial and error" approach due to my job, so yeah... there's nothing else I can really do, unless there is a way to force the Asian languages into non-Asian firmwares -- something that I'm personally not aware of.
So here is the XXJVT version; you may download it from here (link is also in the front post). This version will not wipe your data, so if you came from the previous version you should be able to just install it over and everything should work just fine.
Changelog... or what seems to have changed:
XXJVT base
Blue overscroll glow (this is a Samsung change to stop infringing on Apple's retarded patents)
Overall smoothness seems to be better (and apart from EXT4 I have applied no other tweaks this time)
Slight battery improvement (discharging fully and wiping battery stats from CWM helps after an upgrade)
From my side the rest is the same
Enjoy

Hi, it's stock I'm afraid. You can buy WidgetLocker from the Market and have any lockscreen you wish though
This rom is superb well done mate!
I guess Stock extra still the best. Too many tweak and mod will make the phone unstable. On and off, i still have to reboot the phone even though the developer declare it is stable.
Good work mate.
me too likes such simple ROMs like the one from $omator in the themes and apps sections called:
[ODEX/DEODEXED][2.3.3/2.3.4/2.3.5 - LATEST -> XXJVT] stock+ by $omator
