Monoprice.com micro-USB cables won't work - Captivate Accessories

I bought 3 sets of micro-USB cables from monoprice, and I'm sad to say that they won't work with the Captivate. Due to the Captivate's recessed USB port, the cable can't be inserted all the way. The plastic around the end connector is too thick.

Shave the plastic down?

I had to go to a work conference and left my charger and cable at the hotel =(. So I really need something today because my phone is on it's last leg. Does anyone have any idea where to find a cable/charger that will fit the captivate? And I mean locally by the way. Radio Shack, best buy, AT&T?

Just about any micro usb will work, but some don't seat all the way in so the cable could pop out if you move the phone. If you just lay it down to charge you will be OK.
Buy it, try it, if it doesn't work take it back. But like i said, I have not found one that doesn't work somewhat to at least get you a charge.

This.
Shave the bottom side at an angle. A box cutter, X-acto, or even sharp pocket knife will do the trick. Just mind your fingers.

Got mine in yesterday. Didn't fit as snug as first. Took it to the kitchen, one slice with a kitchen knife and it was perfect. Almost looks like it was specifically made for the phone since the angle was dead on

radio shack, thats where i bought my phone from.

I bought 3 of these from Amazon and they work wonderfully. If you have Amazon Prime they ship free.
Well, I can't post links, but search Amazon for:
BlackBerry USB Cable Micro
They should be $1.99 a piece.

There are lots of options when you search for that.
Is it called "BlackBerry USB DataSync and Charging Cable with Micro USB for BlackBerry 8900, 9500, and 8220"?
Those look like they would fit and they are $2.15 each.

Just did this. Worked like a charm. I used an X-acto knife.
I'm kinda too lazy to do it to the other 2 cables. I'll get to them eventually. Haha

Odd... the 2 micro USB cables I bought from Monoprice work just fine... No modification necessary...

They work, but they work better when you cut them down at an angle on one side. I got 4 from there and did it to all of them. Works like a charm, and $7 for 4 micro usb cables? Can't beat that with a stick.

Damn withs hipping?

I have the Fascinate and had the same issue with these cables. Slicing just a little bit off does the trick and they fit nice and tight. You can see in the pic that I got a little over excited with the x-acto knife on one of them but its nothing a little electrical tape can't fix

As with the other posters, I picked up 4 for my captivate, really simple to shave em down once you get the hang of it, and they work for syncing too, can't get much better than that!

I don't like to point out people or say nasty things.. but you are a moron...
Did you happen to look at the phone to see that the micro usb port is inside the phone and not on the edge of the plastic?
Anyone with 1/10 of brain could figure out that you need to shave off some of the plastic.. due to Samsung's design... not because of monoprice cables.
I love monoprice and have ordered easily over 2,000 different types of cables from them and have never had an issue... to make a topic with a thumbs down is really dumb.
my only complaint about monoprice is their $7 portable dvd mount for the car... My kid ripped both of the arms off kicking and pulling it.
but seriously... if you can't figure out that you needed to shave the wire, please return your android phone and immediately go buy an iphone right now! This second! so you have your Iphone with Ical and you can be an Imoron!
rant over

Also...
change your topic... they cables due work

It's really easy to shave it down, which is what I did.
If the plastic is kinda hard then you can heat up an old knife and it'll slice through the plastic easier.
I even did this with the stock cable, and that fits a little better
Why the stock cable doesn't fit ideally I have no clue....

I think the only way the stock cable won't fit perfectly is if you don't force the door open all the way through the click. It takes a surprising amount of force.

None of these 3rd party micro USB cable fits Captivate without physically mod them.
True, however they are very easily modded. I just cut mine at an angle with a box cutter. WOrked like a champ.
Yeah I don't mind cutting them. But I heard that the BB microUSB cables fit.
more importantly, what do you need 10 wires for?
Because if this is the new standard then friends will be comming over ask to charge there phone or I misplace cables. I swear in the last few years I have like like 20 MiniUSB cables. Or atleast it feels that way.
why dont they fit? a lil too big?

Yea, the plastic around the connector is a bit big to fit in the recessed hole on the captivate. Not a problem though, a boxcutter cuts the excess plastic away easily.
Monoprice cables are far superior to everything else in terms of value/quality. The wire does in fact work with the captivate, but it doesn't go all the way in.
A minute of course nail file work or a quick swipe of a dull blade to take off the bottom corner will repair that. Super easy to fix and nobody would ever notice.
I think I bought a few gold plated 10' cables with ferrites for around $1.70 ea.

Official Samsung Micro USB Cable

The Samsung USB cable that comes with the phone has little clips on it and is "made" for the phone. It looks like the plastic surrounding the beginning of the male end is pulled back a bit.
I bought a cheap micro USB cable at school and it barely fits then I went to best buy and bought one made for Blackberry. The blackberry one works better. Nothing works better than the cable that came with the phone.
Where can I get the official Galaxy S USB cables at? I want to get two or three of them. (money is no object relative to these cables)
Thanks,
JOe K.
If money is no object - then you can always pick them up from Samsung's accessory store:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/APCBU10BBEGSTA
This is what I bought - works perfectly.
http://www.cellularaccessory.com/eta0u20jbebstd.html
wow no creativivty, the samsung cable has the same connector dimension as any other micro usb 5 pin, but the plastic housing is thinner. just sand or scrape or cut the corner of the plastic connector housing that interferes with the phones housing, i buy my cables at the dollar store! any where else it is labled as something special which it is not and often packaged with a charger of some sort and cost 10-30 times more.
I bought a spare for my car (OEM) for $3 on ebay.
I got one from Amazon for $6 with free shipping, official Samsung cable.

I'm not a big fan of the OEM cable. It's just too damned stiff. I'm making the love to retractable cables. Amazon. One Amzer and one Ziplinq.
And wall and car chargers with 2 USB ports each, without attached cable. Basically dual outlets for every modern portable device. 1 amp each outlet. The setup works great for me.
But of course, those of us who are truly Captivated have also got the battery charger and one or three spares . . .

Just have to carefully cut off a little plastic from the back and you're good to go.
I suppose that there's at least some comfort in getting a stiff, ****ty cable for really cheap. But life's too damned short to skim that hard on the durable everyday stuff, imo.
I mean, look at the pic in that link. Like how sadly that supposed power and data link is from wallowing in a sea of petroleum & plastics technology so ancient that just might be shale.
No way. I'm totally Captivated, so my data cables will be frequent and intimate companions. Like my girl, I want 'em tiny and flexible, and I want 'em to fill me other joy.
And the mere thought of using a cable that looks more suited to calf ropin' or to stopping the advance of the Wermacht . . . as a daily accessory for the phone that has so enthralled me that even my girl is jealous of the time we spend together . . . renders the pulse audible in my temples and almost stills my heart beneath the crushing weight of despair.
Oh, no. Not me. Carpe diem and then s-t-r-e-t-c-h it to a nice three feet or four feet, if you prefer . . . and then retract it back to its wonderfully compact resting shape.
Heh. Tried to do that from my Cappy on full desktop version.
This is a why she is a so beautiful to me.
Agree with xeemz, I bought a bunch of 3' and 6' ones and trimmed the plastic back. Now I have one at work, on the nightstand, at the computer, in the car... All for less than $5.
What's up w the cheapness dudes You heard of that diamond-encrusted iPhone?
Well wouldnt you be stoked to get a solid 24K gold plated micro usb cable for your galaxy!
I would pay $$$$$ for that.
Well, I'm old and need to make sure that I don't break another hip when I get whipped with an Indiana Jones cable.
But I would spend $9 on a gold plated phone vs. a regular metal and plastic one. Especially if I could get a FOUR foot Platinum plated cable for just $13.
But then I also need the flash to get the ladies.
I use one of these in my car:
http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-aumcb-xxg.html
The cable is a little thick and stiff (heh heh...that's what she said) but the angle keeps it from protruding up in the air which I find annoying when the phone is sitting in its cradle or stand.

I have done this on some cables, but it doesn't work on all. Some of them have metal just under the plastic and it is not possible to get the tip small enough.
Just more insight that all cables are different.
All cables are certainly not created equal.
But I do have to admit that the stock cable is pretty unbeatable for durability (no pun intended, all you Latin scholars). And as a bonus, if you throw it around someone's shoulders, they are compelled to tell the truth.
Most of the cables I got don't fit right. I got a blackberry flat microusb which was $15 (I'm aware that's a rip off) and then I got a $3 one from my school both really don't fit in the phone at all.
The Samsung one fits so much nicer but they are backordered. Can anyone let me know where they got their cables which fit "near perfectly" into the phone. So far I'm 0/2. I don't want to screw up the phones charging USB ports by putting in cables that don't fit (albeit microusb).
Just post links of ones that fit near perfect.
Thanks,
JOe K.

Lol, no. I haven't gotten mine in yet. Since there are enough positive reviews about it, I didn't really think about leaving one. Now that I think about it, I probably will as soon as it comes in just to let people know how it works with their Captivate. I only bought 2 for myself, one for a co-workers Evo and the other one for my brothers Blackerry.

Check out my ghetto dock!

Ever since I got my EVO I've been wanting to get a dock, as I'm just a dock sort of guy. Nothing like getting home and not having to fiddle with a cable, just slam the phone down and be done with it. That and being able to see my screen from my chair or across the room is sooo nice. However, I use a case (the innocase surface II,) and have since launch day. I do not like having to take my phone out of my case ever if I can get away with it. Unfortunately, I've only seen one premade dock that works with a case, the innodock jr, and frankly- that thing sucks. It's expensive, ugly, and not even made for this phone in particular. So I've waited, and waited... and finally decided to make my own.
So I built this "thing" on top of some weird folding cradle I got from Bed Bath and Beyond for 10 bucks. Don't buy this thing unless you plan on modding it, it looks cool as it has a built in USB Hub and comes with a micro/mini USB cable, but frankly it kind of sucks as a cradle. It's supposed to have a nonslip surface the phone sticks to, but it doesn't work at all for the EVO with a case, probably because it's so heavy. But since it's not useful otherwise, I used it for my base. Nice thing is it does fold up and have a couple different angles you can set the phone at, which is kind of useful now that the phone actually stays on it at any other than fully folded up.
I then made a shim to hold the charging cable at the right spot out of some aluminum from an old hard drive casing. Nothing pretty here, just hacksaw'd it up and did a bit of filing. Goopy glued the charging cable to it, and epoxied the shim to the cradle. I didn't want to epoxy the cable itself to the cradle in case I want to remove it later, that and I wanted it to have some small amount of flexibility. I used the dock like this for a few days, but the phone didn't like to stay aligned all perfect like, so I epoxied the spacer bit on the other side on earlier today. It's just another piece of aluminum I cut and filed up to kinda fit the contour of the bottom of the case. Phone fits beautifully now, or at least as beautifully as something held together with epoxy can look.
Figured I'd throw out how I made my monstrosity to help anyone else do the same thing if they wanted to.
Good job. Makes me want to build something.
Lol, it is ghetto as advertised.
I'm sure it works great though, and you should be glad you made it!

Yeah, its actually my second attempt at building a dock. My first time I tried to make it out of lego, but I had trouble getting the microusb connector at the right angle and getting it so the whole thing wouldn't just fall apart when I pulled the phone off.
If I had the equipment to make it, I though up a really sweet dock design made out of bent and folded 1/8" aluminum sheet, but alas I do not. You can find PCB mounted right angle microUSB connectors with a small amount of built in flex that are much better suited for docks than using an actual cable, but using one still requires something to build it into.

DIY Wireless Car Charging Cradle?

Guys,
Has anyone here cracked open a Qi wireless charger and modded it into their existing car cradle?
I got one for that purpose and it's a little too big (a little bigger than my Nexus 5), so I cracked it open. Now I'm looking for ideas on what I can use to encase it.
These things have a ton of wasted space inside, so I know I can make it smaller somehow. Please chime in with any ideas you might have. Thanks!

The dimensions of the whole thing inside the black case are: 5 3/4 X 3 1/4 inches.
The board is 1 1/2 (plus 1/4 for the usb port) X 2 1/2 inches. The round part is 2 1/4 X 2 1/4 inches.
Together they are about 3 3/4 (again, plus 1/4 inch for the usb port) X2 1/2 inches. This is if the board and the round part are laying inline.
We need to consider that the round part can be folded around the other side of the board. Then the dimensions are even smaller than what you would get if you purchased one of the round "puck" ones. Folded, the dimensions are now: 2 1/4 X 2 1/2 inches.
I purchased mine on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Color-Qi-...l_Phone_PDA_Chargers&var=&hash=item2c76d04857
It cost about $17.00 shipped from New Jersey.
Subscribing to this hoping for some interesting ideas from all the modders on this site. Would love to see a way to hook it up with a magnet in a puck shape that I could just sit it the car, place it on the charger with enough of an angle that I can see it while driving, and go.
This is how I had my old wireless charger for the Palm pre. Was nice because it was just strong enough to hold the phone at about a 45 degree angle (upside down) making it very easy to see. That is the thing I miss the most about the pre.

have you in your car those "typical american" cup holder between the front seats, nearby the gear shaft?
why don't try to remove and put the charger there?
I have enough space in my 2007 BMW 3 series just there, that's a cool idea
using fiberglass or some other filling materials to smooth the charger plate in the empty space
That would be a good idea but it makes it tougher to see when using GPS. I would have to look down away from the road as opposed to being on my dash with a quicker glance.

I was thinking of trying this same thing. I have this cheap mount from Walmart which I'm going to attempt to modify. I also have an extra one lying around in case I mess it up. I was looking at the charger in this thread, it looks like the board may be a bit smaller.
My plan is to just kind of dremel/drill/sand out a hole in the plastic of the mount, pop the charging coil in, and then cover it back up somehow. I'll let you guys know how it goes!
Ok, so I uncoiled the wires a little bit and folded the coil over the circuit board. you can see how small it makes the whole thing. This may be the way to go for me. That would make it smaller than my phone so it can fit under it in the car mount.
Im considering magnets, but if I make it this small there will be no room for them. Plus because it will be inside the car mount, I don't think Ill need them. We'll see..
Here is my 'beta' version I did the other afternoon since I happened to have the parts just laying around...
Using this charger (pretty sure same as OP) with the iOttie XL and these magnets.
Going to make an improved version that is more compact now that I know what I'm dealing with. Will definitely document the build of Ver. 1.0.
Changing up the charger and magnets, but keeping the iOttie XL. Using PlastiDip and Sugru for final appearance.
You guys stole my idea! lol. I posted a thread similar to this about a week ago. Didn't get very far though haha.
found a few items on ebay similar to this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Qi-5V-Wirel...S_Cell_Phone_PDA_Chargers&hash=item1e8334dd2b
I wonder if you were to solder off the qi coil and resolder one of these instead, if it would work? Reason being, because they are so slim, and I assume at 1mm thick, and being able to place in a phone cover with no noticeable difference, if it would help make it even thinner? im thinking at 1mm, perhaps it would be flexible as well?,

So to clarify, you are using the official Nexus charger as a car dock, and the magnets are strong enough for the phone not to fall off? Are you using a case?
Subscribed.
I have ordered an iBOLT xProDock (BB Z10) from Amazon.ca for 19.95, and a QI puck from ebay.
Not sure if there's enough space inside the xProDock body to accomodate the coil - we'll see.

I might actually take the whole charging coil out of the case, but will need something to encase it with. Maybe some shrink tubing type of stuff, etc. Not sure what.
That way I can cut the case down to less than half and keep the circuit board in it. Then have the coil hanging out of the case but covered in something. Any ideas as to what I can use?

I was thinking of using a black plastic divider like you get with some binders, two pieces cut to size of coil/circuit board and using electrical tape to seal the two together.
I'll have to wait for my cheap qi puck to arrive as I've only got the N4 Orb/Dock at the moment

If you buy an official Nexus wireless charger ( https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_wireless_charger&hl=en ), just figure out how to mount that in your car. That's what I'm going to do in my Jeep. The magnets in the charger are plenty strong enough to hold the phone over bumps.
Edit: You could probably just cut the ball in half at the end of a suction cup mount (the pivot point for where the suction cup arm connects to the phone cradle) and gorilla glue the charger to the now flat half ball.
In my Jeep I'm going for a more permanent solution of gluing the charger to a phone cradle mount/bracket that bolts into the jeep. It's too easy to reach into my Jeep and grab a windshield mount.

I hate how the magnector ones are very weak moving them laterally up and down. But its very strong if you try to pull it straight off.

Hmm @ 21$ (with shipping included) wouldnt it make more sense to just buy a Magnet Connector Wire by itself instead of an adapter?

The Magnector X adapter is $15 and the Magnector X cable is $18 so they are comparable in price and are higher quality than the ones you can get from China. I'm hoping I get a faster charge speed with this adapter than the one I have now.

I prefer adapters. When the cable fails you swap out with another micro-usb. This is what I did with Apple lightning connectors as well. My wife has gone through several, but my son who uses a mucro-usb to lightning tip for his iPad has never needed me to buy him an expensive lightning cable . The point of failure is almost always going to be right where the cable meets the tip. If you can move that common failure point off your expensive adapter and on to your inexpensive usb cable it makes sense IMO.
I'm dying to know if the Magnector is tall enough to connect to a Z3C ensconced in a case. I haven't seen anyone definitively say whether it will or not. My Cruzerlite case and the phone itself should show up within the next couple of weeks at which point (I'm crossing my fingers) I'll find out everything works as I imagine it will.
A lot of people report that the Magnector adapter does not work with cases, and I can see why -- there is very little clearance between the charging surface and cable. Looking forward to hearing more about the Deff adapter.
I'm using a couple of cheapo ebay magnetic charging cables right now, which work fine and were cheap enough that they're virtually disposable so I don't care if they don't last long. I'm not expecting any adapter, however pricey, to be very stable laterally because the mag port was only really designed for the dock, which obviously holds the phone still while charging. AFAIK there is no official Sony magnetic charging cable, despite what ebay sellers want us to believe.
I got my deff and it is great. Enough clearance to fit with a case, strong magnet and produces more current than the cheap ones from China.
If you're looking for a good magnetic charger, pick up one of these adapters.

Sounds good, but boy are they expensive! Anyone know of a cheaper source than Amazon's sellers?
this looks like the charger i've been looking for, since none of the others have clearance for a case. thanks!

All the cheapo Chinese ones I've tried have plenty of clearance for a case, and at $2 a pop I'm happy with them

Just search ebay for "sony magnetic cable" and a million options come up. In my (limited) experience they'll all fit more or less the same -- OK but by no means rock solid (I'm sire they're all made in the same Chinese factory). I did try modding one with a dremel tool to fit slightly better but now it doesn't work any more :cyclops: The best of my cheap bunch is the (slightly less cheap) Apple-style ones with a cylindrical head and in-line LED.
One thing to note... some (including my favorite) seem to have spring-loaded pins, so even though they stick out a bit from the charging head they will retract once in contact with the phone's charging pins.
I do want to try one of the Magnector-X cables, however. Looking at the design of the head it seems that it will be much more firmly attached to the phone because of the curved profile that matches the phone edge and gives a much greater area of contact. All the cheapies have a raised, flat charging surface so only the narrow magnet and pins are in contact with the phone. That means that however strong the magnet it's very easy for them to rock sideways and disconnect.
Dopes anyone have one of the newer Magnector -X cables (not he adapter)?

I have both the cable and the adapter from Magnector, and the cable is way better in terms of staying on. I can pick up and use my phone with the cable without it disconnecting. It also works great while driving in my car mount. The adapter is good when just leaving it sit (charging overnight, for example).
The only drawback about the cable is that it's a bit shorter than I'd like, but that's easily solved with a USB extension cable. I've not tried any of the ebay ones, I wasn't too impressed from the comments of others in this forum.
