XWJG5 to XWJM1 - Why the character change? - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Im thinking of flashing to XWJM1, but I must confess, given that we thought we knew what the codes meant - ie A = Jan, etc, through to F for June and G for July, why the jump to M?
Does M represent a different kernel or anything?

This is Android Development Forum.. Dont spam.
So anyway...
The firmware code is split into individual sections:
i9000 - > model designation (GT-i9000).
XX - > region / network carrier designation (XX = open Market).
H - > release year (H = 2008).
H - > release month (H = August).
7 - > version number.

dude I think what hes trying to say is that this is a DEVELOPMENT section. Questions like yours should be asked in the general section.

Ok, I sort of understand.
But I would just like to make the following comments.
Firstly the original question has still not been answered, and we've had two users on here now posting about how Im spamming without actually answering the question.
Secondly, I thought that a question about firmware, its origins and make up, was better placed in the Development section. Stupid me thinking someone might know something about firmware!
Thirdly, Im surprised that my post - which does at least talk about firmware, was singled out and labelled as spam when I see a bunch of other posts talking about Infinity Scroll, Google Maps and what Backup Software to use.
No doubt, my track record of forums, I'll probably now be shot down in flames for defending myself asking a firmware related question in a development forum.

Can't answer the question matey, but the posts above are totally ridiculous, you asked a perfect valid question, which I feel is related to development, especially as all of the 'new' firmwares are based on these releases.

I suspect this is the particular forum I would have asked the same question had I thought of it.
The different naming convention of the "latest" firmware seems to have many people concerned about its actual source, as well as the lacking quality of some of the new stuff included, including deodexed.
I've got no opinion or knowledge of the naming or the proper location, but I found the topic tittle interesting enough to read the thread.

Well I can for one tell you what XW means. Its a ROM for western Europe and supports German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portugese, Turkish and possibly Polish.
I am at a loss as to what the M stands for. It doesn't fit into Samsungs naming at all which may indicate some kind of beta or internal test/nightly release. It is, however, running very smoothly for me and the GPS is a lot better.

I'm pretty sure that M1 and M2 builds are not from samsung, they are modded versions of latest G5 build

Thanks to those who at least tried to give some information.
I've read on Modaco something about this not being odexed in the usual way. The new ROM seems far too geeky for me, and the inclusion of those four images under the Samsung folder are exceptionally grainy and I can't believe Samsung would have included that.
The GPS issue however, Im still not convinced.
JG5 was an interesting thing. GPS did appear more stable, but at the same time, it appeared there was another layer of communication between the GPS and the software - eg MyTracks which seemed to be showing a bit of a buffering effect. It was like the true information wasn't being passed to the app.
In the few days I was testing, I noted that if your accuracy went out, the GPS still knew where you were, but was convinced you had to be 50m away, and would stick to that. It would then try to plot the path between your last known good position to where it thinks you should be before it could start then working to where you are now.
JM2 however is even stranger.
It appears to me that there may be two bits of information passed between the driver and the OS - the accuracy (5m, 10m etc) and the actual satellite numbers and signal strengths.
Booting MyTracks up for the first time, even before I get a lock, MyTracks reports a 5m accuracy from the program I had open before.
When a lock is then established, MyTracks will show more like 30m accuracy and put me 20m away.
Then I'll see things in GPS Test which shows an accuracy of 100ft with 6 satellites for example, but then show me at 16ft accuracy with 3 satellites. It's like something somewhere is always one step behind.
It's like there's some really bad buffering and dampening algorithm in place that just seems not to be working.
Whether this is causing the issues with me only seeing about 5 Satellites outside if Im lucky now, I don't know. I was a lot better on JF3, but the GPS just flaked out all the time. JG5 was stable, but it was reporting a lock when there was no satellites and MyTracks would be all over the place. JM2 isn't playing ball with me at the moment.

But if M1 and M2 are not Samsung builds, then this would surely throw up a big red wobbly warning about the legitimacy of Samsung-Firmwares.
They claim that their Firmwares are genuine, and from Samsung - perhaps just leaks. But they have links to the M1 and M2 builds. So if those aren't genuine, then how are we so sure that XXJF4+ is genuine?

interesting question
Good question, so if anybody finds an answer, please post it here.

+1 I also wanna know what's the M stand for.

maybe they are just milestones between versions... who knows. they work and make my phone better, so i would kindly suggest you thank for the firmwares and the opportunity to install and test them and make your phone work faster and better and so on. you dont trust or like them, then dont get the fw's they post and wait for sammy to update officially. genuine or not ( even if i am positive about them being straight from samsung), i am sure that's the place where we will download the first froyo betas from

If u check G5 M1 and M2, they all have MODEM_I9000*****.tar file with size of 12.582.912 bytes, why rename same file with different name each time when there is no change only to make people think there is update, but there is none
I will stay away from M builds, but thats just my 0.2 HRK

So if I throw up a link to a firmware and say it's a leak from Samsung official developers, but there are oddities about you, you wouldn't at least be CURIOUS as to where it's from and why the naming and some of the internals don't match Samsung official stuff?
Just curious. I'm maintaining my opinion that I don't know the validity of these particular file, but I am also curious why the naming is different. No one's reported problems with the file, so I'm not concerned, but it is different.

This is precisely the reason why I've skipped the JM builds entirely. I don't want to take a chance.
Builds are getting leaked faster than betas of Win7.

sjdean sorry fi have made you feel singled out and your right there are loads of threads that are more irrelevant to development than yours, however, from my understanding the development section should be about development i.e mods roms only everything else should be in general, however I have been known to be wrongc

No new games to Germany, NZ, Brazil, South Africa, South Korea for weeks

Just a heads up, for the next month or so, it appears no update or new game (at least indie) will come to these nations:
- Germany
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- South Korea
- Brazil
The app hub team completely screwed the update and you now need a Rating Certificate (nobody has it) to post in those countries. Said to be fixed in 'maybe weeks'.
You might see a few coming in the next few days, as they were already submitted previous to the update. But probably not afterwards.
What do you think ?
Yay, luckily it looks they found a workaround...

type *#1234# in your dialer.
IIRC, first code is your PDA code, second is your modem, the third is your CSC code indicating the sales region of your phone. Check out the three three letters following the number 7100, then look up at this page, it indicates the region of your phone. Unless someone flashed your phone with different firmware, this is the most reliable way.
In the case someone might have flashed your phone, someone else have to chime in and tell us how to check the original region your phone comes from using IMEI number

I've received mine from newegg today also. I have OZS ... I guess it's China region. Weird symbols, no single word in English... It took me 30 mins to get thru set up process, almost learned some Chinese then finally changed the language... The phone looks flawless but the box was opened before.. They used some other stickers on top of original samsung sticker to seal it back.. I am disappointed in Newegg. Was your box opened too? I don't know what to do now, should I send it back for an exchange or refund? Also, does it matter where the phone was made?..

I was just gonna reply to OP this, before see your post. I think it doesn't really matter, hardware is all the same. Search around, flash some ROM from other region, change some CSC, all the features you want should be in there. I believe that Newegg was selling Note 2 really cheap (like $580 or something) because they got Hong Kong version or something. These phones are selling dirt cheap in China. There are different versions in China like Europe, Hong Kong, Latin America, etc. Prices vary because of the warranty. Hong Kong version is warranted in mainland China, so it is being pricier compared to Euro and Latin America versions. I think Euro and L.America version is like $550/$560 in China right now, so when i see Newegg sell their phone at $580, instantly i thought they must've imported from China!
Btw, if there is Chinese in your phone, it's more likely HK version as Mainland China hasn't got this phone yet.

Yea, I got it for $580 while it was on sale at newegg. Why would they open the box? Hopefully, just to change the China power plug to U.S. type plug...?
So, you think there is no difference in the hardware quality and materials they used? Isn't China known for bad quality products? Also, why do they sell other versions of Note II (L.America and Europe) in China if they got Hong Kong version. Do you know if there is a price difference between all those versions that they have? Good thing that I got 90 days return policy on the phone.

A lot of questions lol
I have the same obsession as you do, that's why i paid my premium and bought from a seller on Amazon that I made sure with, that their stocks are all Europe and not open.
As to why there are diff version in China, same reason as it is in America (well, several months ago in America)--because it is not officially released and people buy imports. Market is a chaos in China though. Unlike how we can import from Europe on Amazon, people traffic phones into China (illegally, to avoid tax or take-away by customs). So many people open box and separately bring the phone and the packaging separately into mainland China. Then, becuz of this, there comes another variation: the "version" that the S/N on box does not match the phone's S/N. This happens more to the EU version though, not on HK version, because it's a lot easier to bring the seal-packaged phone into Mainland from HK than from Europe or other regions. If you care to know, HK is under reign of Mainland China and the custom-free entry/exit was allowed several years ago. People bring HK version back to Mainland and sell as-is at higher price tag, while EU version often has to be opened and brought into mainland with phone/box separated, i.e. open box, which caused the lower price tags on these versions.
I'm not creating any panic or worries here, but if your phone was in Chinese, it's actually a good thing cuz you most likely got HK version and it was newegg that opened the box. Much better than those EU and other versions that were opened by somebody else. Even if you got (unlikely) open-box EU and other versions, it's fine as long as S/N on phone matches package S/N. Or, it's even better for some people (like me) because it's EU version after all. i dont know why, but it's just my preference lol.
Overall, no worries, if the phone works problem free, why worry so much? This is from logic perspective though, with any obsession/emotional thinking taken out of the way :cyclops:
As to the quality, check where your phone is made. Even if it's made in China (or maybe Cambodia lol) i think it is still fine. I know Apple quality is no longer top-notch these days, but compare MBA to Acer ultrabooks, both made in China, MBA triumphs Acer in quality. It all comes down to the quality control, right?
Take your time to enjoy the device instead of worrying about it
Cheers

Of course, when QC is limited or uneffective, Chinese quality is definitely no comparison to GERMAN quality

That's what i'm saying, not, but that's what I meant lol
Flash a ROM and there's no difference as long as you don't experience any problem.
Samsung also did good jobs because they now include more supported language (both menu and input method) at least in their European ROM
When i first got my Note 2 i wasn't impressed much because i didn't like the look more than Note1, also because dpi (or ppi) can't be changed w/o many issues on this phone. I liked 240ppi on my Note 1 VERY VERY MUCH. However, after fiddling around with for less than an hour, boom, my Note 1 is forgotten. It's got so many features out of box that I really didn't come up with many things to mod and improve, so I am now SEARCHING for anything that I can do to improve the device, hah.
Either way, enjoy the phone!

Samsung SmartWatch Active 2 4G/LTE

Hello people,
I bought an active 2 smartwatch with LTE (eSIM) in Spain. I thought it would be relatively easy to turn it on in Portugal (the initial version is supported by one of the network operators). However I have come to the conclusion that the network connection depends on the "goodwill of the network operator", although both smartwatches have exactly the same connection frequencies. Is this anyway or is something escaping my comprehension ?
Any one can help ?
Best Regards

Your PHE (Spain) watch won't work in Portuguese networks, neither Samsung Pay (in case you have Samsung Pay in Portugal).
For both features to work, is mandatory to change CSC from PHE (Spain) to TPH (Portugal)... With this smartwatch, R825F, till now is not possible. Read this thread for a similar smartwatch, the R830 https://forum.xda-developers.com/smartwatch/galaxy-watch/changing-region-galaxy-active-2-t3983895 and you'll see that is a complex process and it involves the use of a combination file specific to the smartwatch and for the R825F till now is not available anywhere.
I'm in your same situation, I have the DBT (German) CSC, and I want to use in Spain, so I need to change to PHE. So eagerly waiting (and searching) for the R825F combination file.
Any help appreciated!

Hi.
Thanks for the comment. I don't think if that's the question (PHE), I think the letters identify the language of the country. The base version:
https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-watch-active2/carrier/
is exactly the same for a group of countries. I think there must be technical problems that only with the introduction of 5G networks will be solved, however in Portugal a older model sold by an Portuguese operator works perfectly:
https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-watch/carrier/
and the frequencies are exactly the same.
Merry Christmas
Dear Guerrero
I just connected my Samsung smartwatch bought in Spain to the carrier network in Portugal that already has eSIM.
I could only do it using an IPhone 11 smartphone, which was able to read the QR Code, because with my Samsung S9, I couldn't reach this stage.
I am experiencing the behavior of my smartwatch SM-R835, then I will tell my impressions.
Greetings

Alternative Firmware (Country) for Note 10 + (SM-N9750)

Hi,
I bought a Note 10 + Today in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Long story short - After a brief search online, I found the best price available on a website. It's only later when I realized that the phone is imported from Taiwan given that the Phones Model is SM-N9750.
What I found really frustrating is that some applications display the Taiwanese language. I check Sammobile for the same model and found that the only two countries supporting this particular model is Taiwan and Hong Kong. The rest of the phones from different countries have a different model number. So, is it possible for me to flash a firmware from any other country ( Preferably from USA, UK, UAE or India)? If so, which one is compatible?
Thanks
I have the N9750 (TGY/Hongkong) and it's in full French, I don't have app in Chinese.
maybe make a factory reset and reconfigure your phone in your language

Thanks. Regardless of the language. Is there any way I can flash firmware from another country? Is there any compatible ones for this model?

No Im afraid you cannot. N9750 is being sold only in two regions as far as I know. Hong Kong and Taiwan. I also have a N9750 TGY/Hong Kong. And I love it. Absolutely no bloatware, dual sim and SD855. Only con I see is its updates are slow compared to other models. No Android 10 beta or stable till date

Well, that's sad. I was hoping that it might be compatible with any firmware that running on exynos.
Not that I don't like Taiwan and Hong Kong based fw. It really is rock solid.
Here's hoping that someone might test out alternative fw for this model in the future and let us know.
Thanks.

S10+ Hong Kong version took whole one month over international model. So Im pretty sure the same formula will apply to our model aswel
I expect Android 10 update to arrive on 15 January at earliest.

I also have a 9750 (shipped with BRI, then I changed it to TGY using Samkey) and found that during the OOB setup, some app titles were in Chinese, but as long as you chose English on the very first screen, everything including those with Chinese app titles will end up being in English. As a last resort, you can do a full reset and make sure you select English on the first screen.
If you need help navigating, try using Google Translate's live camera translation from another phone to understand what is displayed on your screen (I had to do that once since my S9+ shipped already on the home screen--in Chinese.)

The Chinese government is probably vetting it to make sure there's no hidden code meant to subvert their policies and make it easier to organize pro-democracy rallies (j/k).
Taiwan model note 10 plus
@Rocks1991
Same thing here. Wondering if we can do anything to change the language.
More serious issue i am facing is that the bottom speaker doesn't work at times even after the factory reset. Does anyone face that issue? I guess i should replace the phone as this issue persists. Can i get advice on this?
