Voice Search Force Close on Stock Rooted ROM [solved] - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using the stock rooted ROM, deodexed and the voice search app force closes. I've tried a factory reset and it still doesn't want to work.
Is this a known issue with the stock rooted rom? My searches on the net and on xda didn't come up with any useful info on how to fix this on the evo.
Edit: I installed the voicesearch.apk file from the Fresh ROM and that fixed it. I've attached it here.

Maybe try to reinstall the .apk for the voice search. I'm not sure where to find this, but if you know somebody with Fresh installed, it should be in their removed items folder.

I've got the same problem with the same rom, ill be interested to see how this develops.

Thanks for the tip! I found the VoiceSearch.apk from the Fresh ROM, installed it and voice search now works.
I tried attaching it here but I guess there's a spam filter for new users? I also can't post the link to where I found the apk on Android Central forums.

Maybe try a MediaFire link?

No, what I mean is when I try to post any outside link I get this message:
To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed.

I'm guessing it's the same for posting attachments.

Whew, finally able to attach files and post links! Edited the post above so it's easier to see what fixed the problem.
Hope it's useful for someone.

[UPDATED] Miri ROM update watcher.

Hi everyone.
I'm a BIG fan of Miri's ROMs, and because of this I was always eager to know when he's released a new version. I could obviously keep checking the thread where his ROMs are posted & discussed, but I wanted something to let me know as soon as he posted something, without me having to manually check.
With that in mind, I came up with the "MiriROMWatcher" application. Simply download the file linked below and follow these instructions to install it...
Miri ROM Watcher - download
1. Unzip the rar file and place the exe file somewhere on your harddrive that you're happy with
2. Create a shortcut to the exe file (right-click and drag the file, let go and select "Create shortcut(s) here").
3. Move that shortcut file into your windows startup folder (so it starts every time you run windows.)
4. Double click the shortcut, or exe, to run the program.
Once it's running, it sits in your system tray and checks Miri's page every 10 minutes to see if the page title has changed. If it has, the icon flashes until you double-click it. (Double-clicking opens the thread in your default browser, whether flashing or not.) Since Miri changes the thread title to reflect the version number, it's a pretty simple way of looking for a new version of the ROM.
This is not a flashy, user-friendly program - it's a simple app that does a simple thing. With that in mind, there'll be no config files or front end, and it will probably never be updated in any way. If it doesn't work for you, send me a private message and I'll see if I can help, but I'm not promising anything. It's such a simple app that it should just work anyway.
Hope it helps some people out. If there's enough interest I'll look at doing a mobile version, so you know of updates even when you're out and about!
Thanks all.
Edit:
I've modified the application to ignore page titles "Error Message" and "502 Bad Gateway". Whenever the XDA forum went down (for whatever reason), the app was seeing the error or gateway message as a new page title, and showing an update. It now simply ignores the page if it sees one of those titles. If you need to update the app, simply replace the existing exe file with the new one (make sure that the app is not running when you do this, or it won't work.)
MOD EDIT
As this is an application I've moved it to Themes, Applications and Software forum. I suggest you also post a link in Miri's threads
Cheers Spartan.
cool, he really deserves that attention. Great artist.
great thanks ...
Thanks my friend, I added a link to the first post of the ROM thread.

QuickGPS
Might be a silly question but is Quick GPS included in this ROM? if not is there anywhere i can download it from?
Thanks
wtf? wrong thread my friend!
what a cool idea!! cheers
hej!
nice idea about the ROM watcher! I usually use twitter to follow Miri, or
twitter.com/dXsL/Leo-ROM-development.
Now Miri has moved to HTCpedia, guess the app needs an update

Apps safe to remove

As I do with every phone, I remove the preloaded applications as soon as I was rooted. Since this is a world phone, there are other applications installed than other Moto devices (D2/DX), so this list may differ from simliar threads in their respective forums.
Here is a list that I found that is safe to uninstall:
Please backup before you uninstall these, and do not hold me responsible if anything goes wrong.
Sound Recorder 2.2
Video Editor Lite 1.0
City ID 1.0.30
News and Weather 1.3.01
Backup Assistant 2.2
Backup Assistant 1.0
Yahoo Contacts 2.2
Social Networking 2.2
Help Center 2.2
Social Status 2.2
Messaging 2.2
Universal Inbox 2.2
News 2.2
Social Messaging 2.2

DLNA 0709.69
Files 2.2
MediaShare 1.0.0

Sticky Note 2.2
Voicemail 1.1
Voice Commands (Reset he phone if you get FC loop)
Quickoffice 3.3.67 - Motorola
VPN Client 1.0
VZ Navigator
My Verizon Mobile 5.0
I wasn't terribly thorough, so I'm sure I missed some. If you know of any others, I would love to know!
Update
Thanks to AverageCanadian for the following links:
VPN Client, Video Editor Lite, QuickOffice - mediafire DOT com/?i6dqmx5wpij6uxv
Social Sharing - mediafire DOT com/?4rgagvd9d3a0cpn
Universal Inbox - mediafire DOT com/?ktw0mnhh1ffvt47
Sorry can't post links but I'll try to sort through the thread and bring urls to this post
Thank for the list. Did you do this via adb?
I'm patiently waiting for my unlock code so I can use this phone in Canada. Guess I can pass the time by removing some useless bloat ware.
Can someone post the APK to Quickoffice, Video Editor Lite 1.0, VPN Client 1.0, and social status please? Thankies
how do I grab the apk file?
via root explorer I would think, no?
Titanium Backup works well for removal

Once you achieve root with z4root (in the market), you can use mybackup or titanium backup

Alright so I attempted what you said.
Used Titanium backup, but it created .tar and .properties files for each application. So I attempted using Root Explorer and copying the .apk file from sys/apps.
I couldn't find social share, will look for it tomorrow. I created a .rar file that has the titanium backup and the .apk files
Files can be found here.
thanks a bizzle.

np, let me know if you need anything else. Also if you need the actually social network.apk file, I can take another look.
As for the OP's list, are we supposed to just delete the .apk files from sys/app?
Yeah that would be cool if you can find it. I was able to get the quickoffice to install on the DX, but not VPN. If you also can, please get universal inbox that would be cool.

Can someone please send me the email.apk file? I accidentally deleted it :-(
ok so when I look at some of these with rootexplorer, I can't figure out what the names are at all. help?
Maybe try with Titanium Backup. It lists all the App names. Makes it a little easier to get rid of unwanted bloat...

[Q] MyFiles-App Problem (Kezra V4 ROM)

Hello,
recently I installed the Kezra V4 ROM. In General everything is working fine and good, but if I want to set up a new Alarm with my own .mp3 files it says that the Android package 'myfiles' is missing ('Application package com.sec.android.app.myfiles not found').
After that I realised that it was removed or something.
Is there any posible way to change the default file browser or any fix for it?
Apparently i can't post a screenshot though, because I just registered here.
Greetings
ralph

[Q][02/02/2012]How to edit apk files

Hello people,
I am basically php developer.
So, if you can give me a chance to learn Android, I really appreciate it.
The question is that I really want to edit HtcContact.apk and SoftBank mail apk.
[1st Q]
What I want to do with the first one , HtcContact.apk, is that I want to add some field into it when editing the contacts.
This is because there is additional field something called "the reading of Chinese characters" in Japan.
This field enables to order the contact list.
Most of the roms do not contains this additional fields.
[2nd Q]
I want to modify SoftBank mail apk because I want to try MIUI ROM.
The problem with it is that I cannot receive the message using that app as MIUI uses different protocol or something.
I really do not know what to modify.
My knowledge is something like below.
I already installed Android environment in my PC(Win7).
I know how to flash radio too.
Best regards.
ROM: ARHD 6.3.2
Device: Desire HD
Radio: ARHD recommended radio
Im not a expert but dont you have to decompile the apk to do that. I recommend finding a open source contact app and modify that (or pick on that already have support for that function) and then replace the htc contact app
Q2 I have heard that miui i releaseing many of theirs apps as open source.

Thank you very much for your post.
I just tried to reinstall HtcContacts.apk.
However, after installed it, lots of errors are occurring and can not open contacts.
Maybe, I did wrong way to install.
What I did is i just install it using root explore.
Then, about Q2, I will ask someone in MIUI developers.
Thanks, anyways.
Hum.. Try clearing cache? Might remove the errors.
Ok...after work, i will try it.
