If I have Fresh 1.0.1 installed on my phone (which supports apps2sd), and I partition my SD card correctly, then all apps will be stored on my SD card automatically. Correct? There is no "choice" for me to make.
Just want to make sure I understand the process correctly. Partitioning the SD card through Clockwork recovery seems pretty straightforward.
Once that is done, my understanding is that the Fresh ROM will automatically move all my apps to the SD card. In fact, with a partitioned card, you HAVE to use apps2sd. The ROM gives you no choice. Correct?

I never upgrade to 1.0.1, was testing different ROM's then. I am running CM6 at the moment, and I don't think I had to do anything at all for apps2sd to work, it automatically did, I didn't even make a partition.
You had to at least partition your card for it to work.
I don't have any memory doing it, but its possible that I did once I got my phone, getting ready for apps2sd.
But anyways, it seemed to work automatically once I got on a ROM that had apps2sd. I 'think' that there is a few options in the settings that you can toggle on where the apps go, I think the sd card defaults though, atleast with CM6.

From what you describe, it sounds like it is automatic. I'd bet that all of the ROMs that support apps2sd are just supporting the same .zip.
I just can't figure out why my card won't partition right. My partitioned space is "unmounted." My apps won't move over. I can't figure it out.

First I used ROM Manager's "partition" command with the Clockwork Recovery. When that didn't work I flashed Amon RA Recovery and used the commands from the recovery screen. Still no dice.

Yes. Although I never tried it WITHOUT upgrading. Meaning, am I supposed to have just left it as ext2?

I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1 and i've seen a couple of guides where I go into the recovery and do some bits and bobs there to create it, but the only options I seem to get are to mount the sd-ext partition, which fails because it doesn't exist, or to format it.
I'm guessing there is a step beforehand i'm missing?

download rom manager from market , open it , then create a ext3 partionion ... done
before you create a partition , backup your sd card!!

I had the same problem.
You can create the partition using the ROM Manager app downloaded from the market as yasars said.
Alternatively, if you want to do it manually, you can format the card on a *nix system. The Gparted Linux app lets you edit the partitions in a nice and simple GUI. Just remember the order of the partitions: first fat32, then about 512 MB of ext2/3/4 (ext4 may not be supported by all ROMs so better to use ext3) and lastly a swap partition of about 32 MB (totally optional). The size of the fat32 partition is whatever is left over after you've allocated the 512 MB for the ext2/3/4 partitions (and the 32 MB for the swap if you decided you wanted it). For instance, for a 2GB card, leaving 512 MB for the ext2/3/4 partition (no swap) leaves us with about 1.5 GB for the fat32 partition. You do the calculations for your card in your head or on paper and use those values in Gparted.

Yes it should be a sticky!
Having a problem when I try to use ROM Manager.
I select the 512 for EXT and 32Mb for Swap and the phone reboots.
It then shows the big triangle with Mr Android next to it until I press some buttons and then I get the recovery screen with the following messages
Finding Update Package....
Opening Update Package....
Verifying Update Package....
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (Invalid Arguement)
E:signature verification failed
Installation Aborted.
I don't have a cache folder on my sd card so i'm guessing it's looking in the internal memory?

BACK-UP sd card before you do this.
For windows users
have clockwork recovery and rom manager on your desire
then format sd in windows.
put it in your desire and go to rom manager.
select Partition SD Card
select your space i used 32 swap 512 ext
than reboot and your sd card has the ext partition.
than put your files back on your sd card and Done

I had the same problem with ROM Manager. My solution was to downgrade ClockworkMod Recovery to v2.5.0.0 (in ROM Manager) and then partition the card. Worked on first try.
When you're done you can upgrade to latest version again if you want.
I don't think you should use a swap partition, so just set it to 0 MB.

As long as you have an ext2/3/4 partition and the ROM you're flashing has A2SD support (check before you download the ROM), you are not required to do anything more. To check whether A2SD is working once you've flashed your ROM, download the Android Terminal Emulator app from the market and use the following commands

You should see your app directory pointing to /system/sd/app and app-private pointing to /system/sd/app-private
I'm not sure which format ROM Manager defaults to, but you can always check the type of format used by mounting the card in Linux and using the GParted Linux app (you could use a card reader or use the 'Disk Drive' option in your phone to connect it to the computer). Also, ext3 should be fine for most custom ROMs. In fact, not all ROMs support ext4.

- Another quick way is to install quick system info from the Market, it tells you infos about your system, including the use of your a2sd partition.... ;-)
- About ext 2/3/4 I would advise the use of ext3, as ext4 is poorly supported by Roms (even those who pretend seem to have issues...)

Does the decrease of available internal storage means apps22sd+ is not working? I've partitioned twice and installed seperate 2.2 roms with apps2sd+ included and every time I install more things I see internal storage drop.

Not in itself, no. Those symbolic links mean that A2SD is working fine. However, from what I understand about the theory, even A2SD installs a part of the app into the internal memory. That may explain the drop you see. By the way, how much free memory do you see on your device? I usually have about 140 MB free on my Desire. I read somewhere that if A2SD wasn't working, that figure would be about 90 MB.

I just recently opened spare parts apps where it allowed me to change where apps2sd installs things. By default it was set to automatic and I'm guessing that was causing the problem. I set it to external and tried installing a browser while my disk was mounted and it wouldn't let me do it. Then I set it to charge mode and it installed normally.
Some roms probably default to external while some automatic.
edit: Just installed an app that I previously installed while using "automatic" and it still uses up internal storage instead of A2SD storage. Dunno what's wrong. I am using ext2 partitioned through rom manager.
Check my sigature below to see the details of what I'm running. I partitioned the card using Clockworkmod and RA recovery, tried ext4, and ext3 partition. Tried using a 64mb swap and no swap. The partition I created was either 512mb, 896mb, and 1024mb.
It partitions ok, then when I go into ADB Shell and type in A2SD check it says "partition found but not mounted...either your rom does not support a2sd or your partition is ext.4...please downgrade to ext.2 or ext.3".
I'm using a class4 8gb card. Any ideas on what is going on here? Thank you for any ideas.
i dont think a2sd supports 2.2, it probably needs to be reworked.
After trying to get apps2sd to work on Froyo I gave up, tried Titanium backup and I am able to move most of the apps to the SD card. I'm running Fresh 3.1. I don't know if this makes a difference but I was looking at Dark Tremor's thread on installing and running apps2sd...and he showed how to go into ADB and apply a "Market fix"...I did that, but am not sure if that helped me in this case.
I'm pretty sure you just go to the applications section of the settings menu and select "move to sd card" on the app you want to move.
Yeah, It looks like their is no way to have the old style app2sd to work. I am using Titanium backup to store just about all the apps2sd, with Froyo you don't partitionthe card and there are drawbacks. hopefully someone will get it to work where we can store the appt to the partition.

Today I flashed a fresh Defrost 6.1a (Which is said to support A2SD+), Flashed Gapps. So far so good.
I took my 8GB SD card and partitioned it in Ubuntu using Gpareted. I set the FAT32 partition first, then a ext3 partition (512MB) second.
Ubuntu read both with accurate sizes.
I put the card back into the phone and looked "SD card & phone storage", it no said my SD card is only 6.89GB, but the Internal phone storage was still low.
I decided to check a little more with Titanium Backup, which surprisingly said that my ext3 partition is only 256MB and is half full (talking about a fresh ROM here).
Can someone point me to where I did wrong?
Maybe format using ext4?
Put the ext partition first?
Reflash ROM after partitioning?

I have never got A2SD working either. I think you need to install a script or something. Here is a post about A2SD. Also, Android 2.2+ supports moving apps to SD anyway.
If you want more space to install apps, you can install one of AlphaRev's HBoot templates which can increase the /data partition, that's if you have S-Off.
I couldn't be bothered farting around with A2SD and so I did that instead.

So you flashed the a2sd enabled ROM on the device which didn't have memory card prepared? I always thought such enterprises would end in a boot loop. Flash it again if this is the case.

What you are referring to here, is Froyo's built-in a2sd which requires the app to be optimized for app2sd, that's why only some of your apps seem to be on the SD card. Furthermore, it will transfer the apps to FAT32 partition, that you don't want for it to do since Android first loads apps which need to be loaded at startup, and afterwards it mounts the SD card, which will lead to some apps failing to start after boot.
a2sd tricks the phone into thinking that ext partition is it's internal memory. Froyo app2sd != a2sd script, don't confuse those two, they are not the same.

Hi all!
As a last resort i'll be asking my question here.
I'm currently running the stock 2.2 rom with root access and clockworkmod recovery. I've had this setup for a long time now. Today i got my 8gb class6 card and i thought i'd change to a Desire HD rom for a change.
So far (5 hours into the process), i've only managed to what seemed the easyest: ..partition my sd card!
I currently have the following:
7gb fat32
1gb ext2
32mb swap
I have tried everything i could find but i simply cannot get this thing to upgrade to ext3 and then ext4. I do not have a card reader at hand so i'll have to do it within the phone.
The problems i'm facing after struggling for 2 hours to get parted working:
- no upgrade_fs script.
- tune2fs giving a unknown command error
I've been playing arround with this for about an hour when i switched to trying to install AmonRA recovery as i read this could upgrade your ext partition aswell. Problems i faced when trying to flash this were:
- unrevoked: internal error, unable to unlock nand.
- flash recovery app: error running command.
- flash_image commands: whole bunch of write errors and in the end a no space left error.
- rom manager: alternate recovery's greyed out, even after countless reinstalls and 'flash clockworkmod first' -tricks.
- fastboot: remote: vertification error.
- terminal app: flash_image not found.
And probably a bunch more i forgot..
I'm thinking of simply installing a RUU and do the whole rooting process again, and then installing amonra. For now i've recovered a clockworkmod backup i made and put back my old sdcard.
I hope there's someone that can help me!

Done this, but gparted only allows creation of ext2. The problem im having is upgrading it to ext3!
GParted allows to create all kind of EXT partition (including EXT3). Use the latest LIVE CD or USB version. I upgraded my EXT3 to 4 via GParted.

No, don't need a card reader. Best way is to boot into recovery and mount the SD Card. You can try via the Disk Drive option, but it gave me wrong readings (since the EXT partition was in use by the system), so not recommended.

I redid the partition, again with Amon Ra, then selected ext2 to ext3 and it worked. Just figured I'd let people know the ole try again method could work if you get here.

In a couple of weeks, you will be posting about ext not working properly.
Only partition your sd-card with 4ext recovery or Gparted.

I have a 16 gig card partitioned per directions in thread.
I installed dta2sd and after reboot all my apps were GONE.
Where did they go?
If they are on the ext3 partition how do I look and see?
How do I get them back?

I made the partition prior to installing dta2sd.
It was only after dta2sd that all my apps are missing which i think they transfered but not being reconized.

Isnt there a FAQ or walk through somewhere to get people running Synergy RLS1 + Ext3 on their SD? If not, there needs to be one. Wiping and Flashing the ROM is easy but I can see where people get confused creating the partition then installing a2sd, etc. A good Synergy + Ext3 setup in step by step walk through would prevent a lot of these threads.
This one is pretty good when it comes to the basics of formatting/partitioning before a Synergy install.

Its way to confusing.
I think my partition may be messed up... Is there a way to start over from scratch? I can't even see the partition is there. I was going to remove the partition thru a windows program partition manager but it doesn't show up. Just shows up as a 14.8 card. In windows explorer it shows up as 11 gig card I know its not going to add the partition to it but... still it should have showed up in the partition manager.

Windows isn't going to help you in seeing the EXT partition (since Windows doesn't natively support any Linux partitions). You'll need a Linux machine or you can try to adb into your recovery.
If you do ADB into recovery, first thing you should look for is a program called parted in /sbin. If it's there, you can use that to remove and install a new EXT partition (sorry, I don't remember the exact commands off hand).
Darktremor may not be mounting it as it may not actually see the correct block device. It really depends on the version you are using.
To find the version, type a2sd help

There is a specific version of DTA2SD for Synergy that can be found in the Synergy Updater app that comes preinstalled when you flash Synergy. The 'primary' reason for its use is to move the dalvik from the SD card back to internal storage and eliminate lag that may be bothersome to some people. I hope this clears up any lingering confusion. As for what happened to the apps, I can only 'assume' that the OP flashed a version of DTA2SD not specific to Synergy.

Is that Synergy-specific version of DTA2SD *only* available through the Synergy Updater? I ask because I have not set-up the Synergy Updater yet (requires server addresses, etc.).

OK, so I figured out how to get the Synergy version through the updater.
Flashed it successfully.
Seems as though just flashing it, I lost about 130MB of internal storage. Does that sound right? I went from close to 300MB, down to about 170MB. Is the Dalvik cache that big?
