Micro-USB to HDMI TV-out cable - Captivate Accessories

Well the title says it all, did any of you guys/gals tried to use a micro-USB to HDMI cable to try and get tv-out of higher quality than current component cables?
I know some Samsung phones had that option(usb to HDMI) and I know android OS supports it, but many companies have been known for blocking this option however. Samsung themselves even offered the cable, but it is now out of stock.
Also, does anyone know where to get this cable for less than $30+? I would try it out but that price just seems like a rip-off!
Plus does anyone know where the restriction the manufacturer puts on usb to hdmi video output is lcoated at? (in the anroid OS parameters)
Thnx!

I believe the Captivate can only do TV out through the Headphone jack, not the micro USB prot. But don't quote me on that. Check out this video.

i read a review that said the phone could do tv out through micro usb to hdmi but the cable from samsung is too expensive and sold out to boot.

The Captivate can in fact produce TVout via a MicroUSB - to - HDMI cable. You just need the cable and your good to go.
However some DRM Protected files may not play correctly on your TV

Samsung released a page with it on it. Its out of stock, but will be priced at $50! I think that's way too much, hopefully there will be cheaper options out there.
The samsung item is Product ID: ECC1HU0BBEBSTD

Does anybody know if the HDMI cable will power the phone at the same time as using it? I have read that the HDMI spec provides a 5V power supply and was wondering if that carried over with this cable (or correct me if I'm wrong on that). It doesn't sound like anybody has been able to find these cables anywhere yet, but I was just curious if I should be excited at the prospect or dismiss it entirely knowing that it'll kill the phone's battery...

gonna hafta pick up this cable sooon when its available...

I'll buy it if it works like the 3.5mm headphone jack video. IE, it displays anything, rather than just a few supported things.

Cheap deal
Found this while searching for that cable. Looks like you can get a replica cable for $3.60. Out of stock of course.

Also found the Samsung official one for $50 that is currently out of stock.

The pictures of the cable show a port of some sort, on the HDMI end. It looks like there is a picture of a power plug just above the port. I'm guessing you can plug your micro-usb charger into the HDMI end, and charge your phone that way.

Quick thought on this guys. There's no proprietary magic going on so someone should try the micro to standard usb then get a usb to hdmi cable. I hate to string cables together but data is data and in lieu of waiting or paying 50 bucks, I'm gonna try a two adapter method. Probably cost 20 or less not 50.

Need to pay better attention, those cables will not work. You need a microUSB to HDMI not a microHDMI to HDMI cable.

Thnx for replies, I also posted this on another android forum and it seems there are just no shops that currently sell it. I called couple of big suppliers and they all say that it should be arriving soon.
So it seems we just going to have to wait this one out.
$50 for a 2 ft cable makes even the ever so expensive rip-off cables from Monster Cable co. cry. lol

I was hoping this would work, I emailed Samsung to see what they had to say. Their response was not what I was hoping....
Hopefully its a case of the customer service rep not knowing anything. But its looking like these cables are only for some pmp style devices Samsung makes. It would be nice if someone can confirm this.
The way it sounds is if you want anything better than composite video out, you will have to use DLNA.

Samsung changed its tune about the cable working with the Vibrant and Captivate. So either they made a mistake and removed the cable from the page(s). Or they are going to announce the cable when they have the software to make it happen done.
They probably made a mistake, however on both captivate and vibrant seems slightly more unlikely.

Very fishy indeed, like always samsung is in some kind of a cover-up... in any way the guy I was talking to said they special ordered them and they have arrived now.
Here is the link...

Not much better than samsungs price but at least they have them in stock...
Someone should buy this and see if it works lol
Or you all can contribute a dollar or something and I wil lbuy it myself for testing.

Wow it's even easier. DUH one end goes into your micro usb slot (where your charger/connect to a computer) the other end into the tv. I would understand some people not understanding this...maybe they don't have a flat screen so they don't know where to stick it. Thanks neukom. They are on ebay for 5 dollars.

It's a brand new technology. Micro USB to HDMI hasn't existed until now (recently), so don't expect it to be cheap for at least a year or so.
It's unlikely to be just a cable. There will probably be a "lump" in the cable holding some electronics.
If it was as simple as a straight cable, someone would have leaked the pinouts and I would be making my own since both micro-usb and hdmi ends are available at most electronics shops online.
micro hdmi for evo and micro usb for vibrant have different sizes... micro hdmi does not match on a vibrant...
Has anyone on this forum purchased the MICRO USB to HDMI cable?
I haven't heard any talk about this and I wanted to see what others' experiences might have been.
You can pick the cable up here. I would imagine that cable, plus a few bluetooth controllers and an SNES emulator, would ROCK!

They don't work. The Vibrant doesn't have this capability. You have to live with streaming through Allshare or something similar, or using the TV-Out cable for your headphone jack.
Thanks for filling me in. I read online in a few places that we would have the ability to utilize and HDMI out, but heard no reviews on a such thing.
Thanks again for shedding light on the situation.

HTC A/V Cable

Dear Thunderbolt Owners,
Please tell me that the USB video/audio cable works on the TB... this would strongly influence my decision on buying it.
Question if it does work:
Does this show everything not just audio/video like the crappy moto X I have?
I am sure many of us want to know this
The official video out cable I have for my old Incredible does NOT fit/work on my Thunderbolt.
I got to thinking about this after the thread in the gen discussion board, and really the AV cable shouldn't work anyway. It's an analog signal instead of a digital one. So I don't know why I thought it would work to begin with. I would like to see this USB to HDMI materialize for us. My luck it will never exist. But it is listed as a accessory, so hopefully they aren't referring to the DNLA adapter that HTC just released.
Maybe something like this...
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-ECC1HU0BBEB-SCH-i500-Fascinate-Captivate/dp/B004H9XXZY
I don't know, sorry I need posts for downloading something special
If this was sold direct though amazon I would buy and test. I'm not willing to just throw away 50 in case it doesn't though.
USB to RCA would have been dreamy

As I stated before... it does NOT fit and it is not a standard micro USB.
The Dinc actually has contacts on the top back that make it a hybrid proprietary mix of micro USB and video out signals. I should know, when HTC took forever to release it I was attempting to build my own as were others on XDA using pinout diagrams.
-Lil'
I can only hope for your sakes they release one. I can tell you when I had my iPhone hooking it up in my car and viewing everything on the screen I have in there was amazing. Esp for navigation, music videos, or reading email. OH, and lets not forget geeky bragging rights.
I had my DINC setup that way too. I was actually just looking at the specs on the DNLA adapter HTC put out. I figured at worst I could hide that unit and use the HDMI and run it to all the screens in my Tahoe.

I doubt that'll work as it's not an MHL connector, which I understand is HDMI and USB combined, but if it somehow does... bargain!
Lol now i look properly its not going to work at all
imo very stupid not to use standard HDMI mini port... now we have to buy adapters and ****.. and the phone won't charge if you don't have special adapter.. epic fail imo.. anyway they should include adapters with the phone.
I agree, they should include the required cables and adapters in the box, other manufacturers like Nokia do with their flagship handsets.
I think MHL will ultimately be better than mini HDMI port though, since its looking very likely to become the next standard connection.
I'm hoping to get one of the MHL cable/adapters from the MHL consortium for my Clove Blog review, if I do then I will post up a youTube video for everyone. At the present time the consortium PR person is trying to procure one for me, but it seems likely its inordinately difficult, so remains to be seen whether I will have it in time for the review.
In the very least, you'd expect them to have manufactured and released the accessories by the time the actual phone is released.

First stock due mid-June just saying.
Can someone confirm for me that this is the same cable. They call it an Ethernet Micro-HDMI (Type D).
Edit: Monoprice[)0Tcom has them for like 5 bucks. I can give the link so you can see the cable once I get some more posts in here.
I'm not worried about the Ethernet part, it should not get in the way because the extra connections for it are female.
Also, there is a lot of great info on these forums. Look forward to sticking around and modding some phones in the future.
Edit 2: So when searching for the Samsung cable by Goog'ling the phone, they call it either "microUSB" or "HML port"
That site has two different types that they call: Mini-HDMI (Type C) and Micro-HDMI (Type D) the type C looks like the usual Samsung cable connection, I was just wondering if there is some different way they wired the Samsung cables so that we had to use those ones. I cannot see them doing that though since there are many devices switching to the same cable as well.
The trick is that standard HDMI so far does not include a link for power. The Samsung MHL adapter has a microUSB plug that connects into the phone and a microUSB jack to connect your charger, and the mini-HDMI jack to hook up to the TV so the device gets charged while playing back. In a future specification update, HDMI will probably be amended to include a power link.
Some info here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtwTcnR0hqA

OTG+MHL? Maybe (anyone taken an MHL adapter (or 11pin to 5pin converter) apart yet?)

so, anyone taken apart an MHL adapter yet?
i have a sneaking suspicion, that the move to an 11 pin is what will allow BOTH OTG, and MHL at the same time, but i could be wrong.
look inside your USB port on the bottom of the S3...
whatya see?
the normal 5 pins on the USB part.. but what is that in back wall? THE OTHER 6 PINS!
yep, that is why you cannot plug the MHL adapter into a hub or anything.. there is 6 pins are missing.
Now, i am wondering:
has anyone taken it apart to see if the 6 pins are used alone, or if it uses the the USB also?
if it uses only the 6 pins for MHL-ness, then it should more than possible to make an OTG/MHL adapter/dock.
more thought says, if my theory is right, an 11 pin to 5 pin conveter may be the key.. and an otg can be spliced in to give 2 outputs: MHL in one (using an s2 MHL adapter) and OTG in the other.....
anyone wanna tear their adapter up? or are you guys gonna make me spend some money?
I ran across this post looking to see if anyone has done this yet. I am going to try to grab the 5 to 11 tomorrow and tear it apart (since it's the cheaper adapter). My plan was to rip it apart and if the original 5 pins are available, splice just as you mentioned.
I can't find a decent picture of the microUSB plug to see if all pins are there.
Also I found this:

meh, I think that is wrong. many people have done exactly what it says you can do, and it doesn't work.
Makes me wonder if the boys at Samsung made a press mistake. If indeed you can't use both with the correct cable, then why make a port with 11 pins? Seems a waste of resources to me.

I have never seen anything from samsung saying that MHL and OTG was possible.. just speculation in websites.
It better be possible because if not all Samsung's managed to do is make us buy hugely overpriced new MHL cables when they could have kept the old type, but I guess Samsung's made some decent money giving people no option but to buy £30 MHL cables.
I hope Monoprice really is working on a cable. 35-40 USD is more than I want to pay, especially if I get a couple and/or an HDMI dock.

that would be key. I have sent out messages to people that may know, or may be able to find out, but i have not had success.
heck, If it can be done in the terminal (turning on items) i can make a shortcut that would do it.. but i have had no success with that either.
It's not possible I think.
You can use an MHL enabled tv wich powers MHL, (so you don't need the adapter) but how do you want to split that?
You can split the cables from the samsung adapter, so you have the MHL ones(6) and the usb ones(5).
But what then?
You need to connect the MHL ones to an hdmi cable, and connect it with an MHL enabled tv. And the usb ones to an usb port for OTG.
But will that even work with this S3?, because it is designed to get power from your charger via the extra usb port on the adapter.
Maybe it only works with the adapter, and not even with an MHl enabled tv...
I think somebody needs to connect the S3 to an MHL enabled tv, if that works you can modify the adapter and use the usb as OTG.

I found (and shared) the MHL value, and we already know the OTG value.. but it only seems logical there is ANOTHER value to activate both at the same time. we are postulating, the the reasoning behind the 11 pin, is to allow both. If adding just an OTG cable turned on MHL too, it would cause issues without an MHL connection. and the same with MHL activating OTG, without an OTG device connected. like i said, this is postulation at the moment, but there SHOULD be a thrid value to enable both at the same time. that value would be used by a future peice of hardware that does a whole "PC MODE".
and if it does not exist, it CAN be done, we just need more "stuff" a way to enable a special switch if you will.
some people are saying you can connect straight to an MHL enabled TV, but that has not been done yet (and since there are no 11 pin MHL cables, that are not adapters, it seem unlikell that anyone will until said cable exists. the S3 cannot send MHL signal over the usb part, it has to be either the extra 6 pins, or with the 11 to 5 pin adapter.)
essentially, the pins are there, and with some special software, or a hidden resistor value as to yet, unfound, and some custom hardware (as of now NOTHING 11 pin, has 11 pins in it) it SHOULD be possible.
but there is nothing that has been found (hardware wise) that is even modifyable to work.... yet.
What I don't understand, why does MHL only work with the power connected?
They could easily make an MHL cable with the 11 pin, and hdmi. That should work for only MHL.
Only no go I can think is that MHL drains your battery because of always having your screen on, and the MHL output.
So they decided to use the adapter with power, otherwise you can't use MHL feature very long before your battery is empty
I think inside the adapter they only use the pins for giving power, and not the full 5 pin support for OTG, and therefore OTG doesn't work when you want to connect something.
Inside the ROM they have maybe build in something that MHL will only work when power is connected.
Maybe the solution is very simple, modify the adapter so full 5 pins are connected.

MHL Cable for the Note

Hi. So I found this cable for the Note on eBay.
It seems a good item because it doesn't require the adapter or external power. Has anyone tried it, or is it more worth while to go for the original adapter? TIA

I'm not sure why you'd want one without the usb cable for power though, cuz if you're outputting your display to your TV then it's going to drain a lot of power.
Unless you only want to show say a picture, or a short video it might be okay, but if you want to output say a whole movie, you're going to want to provide your phone with power at some point.
I've recommended an mhl cable in the past. It might suit you if you're looking for a nice, compact cable with hdmi and usb (for power).
But if you're dead against one with a power cable then feel free to give your linked one a try and report your findings.

Yeah, but i got the impression it would draw power from the TV by itself. I may be wrong about that...its not that I'm dead against a cable that needs power, more that I'm thinking about portability and something to add a bit more value should I ever sell the Note. And admittedly for the last one a genuine OEM adapter would be the best option, but they are gorram expensive.
Considering I have to buy an HDMI cable for my laptop, I might try a generic adapter, see how that works, and then try this cable if I have the spare cash in the future.
Hi,
So I have an update for this; recently I bought one of the cables as above out of curiosity, and surprise surprise... It didn't work. When I connected the Note to the TV with it, it just flashed up 'USB connected' and then 'USB not connected' in the status bar. This is because of the obvious reason; that you need a conventional adapter with a USB-connection for external power. Also, the seller of this cable claimed that the TV in question needs to be MHL (not just HDMI) compatible for it to work. So essesntially you do in fact need a conventional Samsung (or generic copy) 5-pin HDMI adapter to get your Note's display on your TV.
I think that resolves the question. Oh, one more thing: you need a TW-based ROM for HDMI connection. Don't forget...
