Froyo + iTunes - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So. I remember back when froyo was first announced, they mentioned ota streaming from itunes but i havent yet seen that on any froyo build and i have really been hoping to. Does anyone know what happened or if its still a go? I cant be the only one who has way to much music to fit on their phone and would rather it stay all a comp leaving you gigs of extra space
If this has been mentioned before im sorry, i did search lol

I know it isn't much help, but there's two articles here about it ( pretty much the same info ).
Android 2.2 Froyo gets remote app installs & iTunes streaming
Android 2.2 (Froyo) gets OTA apps and iTunes streaming
They don't really go into specifics, but they do mention the one-click app installs that we haven't seen yet either. Hopefully once FroYo starts official rolling out, we'll see both these features ( although the AppBrain install is still great =] ).

i started a thread about this same feature a while back and was met with a pretty good response. turns out theres already a program on the market called "mspot" which u make a account down load the program on your computer and then the app on your phone. the service is free for the first 2.0 gb which should be enough for some decent music. you should look it up iv been using it for the past few weeks and its been amazing. its like having your itunes library on your phone!

i thought they pushed that feature to gingerbread?

Wanna link us to these articles? And do some fact-checking to make sure you're not confused in regards to the teased features for Gingerbread that were shown at Google I/O?

That was the first one I remember reading. Am I reading it wrong?
From what I understood, those demonstrations were of tech that's to be in Gingerbread, or just flat-out hasn't been released yet. Don't hold your breath waiting...
I still think it's crap how google got everyone so excited with all the cloud features for froyo(like OTA app sideloading) then didn't really deploy them...
They didnt mention gingerbread. And they demonstraited it on a n1 which doesnt have the hardware for gingerbread. Im pissed this feature hasnt been added.

I think there is a lot of this in the framework for FroYo, but what they showed were more demo level, and they are going to let developers implement these things.
Kinda like the HDMI port on the EVO, the API is there, developers just need to use it.
Buy J. River Media Center and install their free Gizmo Android app. Music streaming and more to your phone.
to the OP or others that said they are pissed... you may be pissed now but i assure you after reading a few things, the future is looking bright!!!!! as f*ck!!!!
I blv google has come to the realization that it cannot fully compete with iphone smart(coughdumbcough)phones as well as microsoft smartphones for the simple fact their proprietary music software pwns all just about in respects to itunes and zune... however with google's purchase of simplifymedia and the already implemented cloud servers... its no doubt in my mind in short time we will rule. Hell Apple aint dumb, Itunes will see cloud computing too.
In the meantime... you all should look into either mspot (music only) or zumodrive (media video included). Its basically an alternative (IMHO) until google gets its service up and running. It syncs the music on your computer to the cloud and lets you access it from within your android app. Damn near instant with cloud computing
did i mention how much i love clouds?

What makes you think it doesn't have the hardware? 1Ghz CPU, 512MB of RAM are the only requirements for 3.0 that we've heard of, and the N1, EVO, DX, Incredible, and Desire all match those requirements.
I think screen size is also a requirement for gingerbread. At least 4" I believe.

3.5", not 4". N1 has 3.7".
I think most of those features are in Froyo, but there are still a lot of frameworks outside of the OS that need to be implemented. The Android Market is still being redesigned to work from the web. Froyo has the ability, as you can see with Chrome to Phone, but the web side of things isn't ready for the public yet. As for media, I think Froyo may have it, but Google is probably waiting for their music service to be ready (which is on its own timeline) before they launch the media features. Remember, they want to sell music through the Market in the near future, and the media features mostly have to do with that. It probably won't come until Gingerbread is released, but most likely 2.2+ can use these features when the "other half" is ready.
Patience is a virtue.

[Q] Music apps

I am regretting that I updated to Froyo from sprint because now when I open up an App that involves music a few things happen. First if I open slacker and close it when I'm done then later in the day use the mp3 player app (stock/or from market) slacker will start while the mp3 playing and vice versa. Another thing that really grinds my gears, is that when using the mp3 player (stock or after market) The song will speed up really fast and go through 4 songs in like 15 seconds. This is really flustering me because I want to sell my Itouch because I have this phone but know I am not sure if i really wanna do that. Any suggestions or should I just do a little searching and root 2.2 so I can flash a different version a 2.2 that you guys have provided?
Thanks in advance,
jiggajoe
P.s. If someone already reported this issue sorry I tried searching before posting but did not find it.

firstly - check the sticky at the top of this section. There is no way to root 2.2 yet.
Having said that, I don't think what your describing is normal, even for stock froyo. If you're still within your 30 days, you might want to think about trying to exchange it.

[Q] Has your market been updated?

Hi,
I know there is somewhere around here the update of the new market.
However I have not installed it or anything and now my Desire Z has it, which makes me wonder if anyone having a Desire Z has also got it?
Because I also have a Desire and Wildfire but neither of them has got the update.
Thanks
*****EDIT ****** My wildfire and my Desire Z have got it, maybe I havent got it on the Desire since I am on a custom ROM.
Anyhow thanks
Google did say they would be rolling it out over the next few weeks. I haven't got it yet either.
But there's an .apk you can install if you want, over on the Apps forum.
I got it last night. It updated silently, without any notification, which i don't realy like...
New Market app looking good, just needs to get used to it. I don't mind for sharing an .APK if you want.

Market has always updated silently, it updates far more often than you know about, but most of the time it will just be bug fixes and not actual change so you will never notice.
The same method they use to update the market is how they can also remove banned apps you have installed (if installed via the market)

After they've removed "Free Advanced Task Manager" from my phone i switched to CM ROM (without GApps) for ~2 months and just now starting to use all that Google spyware-kit again. That's the only thing i hate about Google. Automatic app updates via Market su**s too IMO. They keep getting updates even if i've un-ticked "Allow automatic updating" box.

i updated my market app manually, but it seems this one is eating battery, there is a running program called alarmService Process: com.android.vending and its running... i didnt have this with my older market... is there any way to get the old version back?
It updated overnight sometime between tuedsay and wednesday. I liked the old one better, this one tries too hard to look like the app store
Don't think mine has updated, looks very much the same as before to me.

You'll know when it gets updated. They've revamped the looks of the interface quite a bit.
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Android-Market-Update-Android-1.6-Developers-android,news-9351.html
Last time I checked mine wasn't updated
I received the update, but not sure if I care for the new coverflow rip-off UI. Unnecessary eye candy. My battery life seems to be noticeably worse after the market update, anyone else seeing this?
My biggest question is does the new marketplace work properly with a non-gmail login for my Google account. I HATE gmail, and do NOT want a gmail address - yet Android Marketplace forced me to add one to my otherwise perfectly valid existing Google account.
Now the bloody gmail address has taken over (without asking me) my default Google and YouTube logins. Grrrr.....
And gmail, I have now found, has no technical support facility. At all. Period. Just a user forum, which seems pretty useless so far.
What a shambles of a way to operate a company that is providing the operating bedrock to phones selling for £500!

This is completely off topic. If you want to rant about Google, start a new thread.
Mine was just updated last night.
I noticed mine was updated about 6 hours ago. My G2 was at 9% battery life when I found out. I downloaded Tweetcaster (yeah, I took a dive and re-started my Twitter account), set up the widget and I still had 9% when I plugged it in, that was all of 10-15 minutes though so I can't comment on battery life.
I actually like the new market. So far, navigation is just as easy as it was before and looks much more refined and sleek than it did before. Personally (after consulting my iTouch's market with the new Android market), I saw a bigger resemblence to the iOS and Android markets BEFORE the update (back when both used block buttons). Since the update, there's a lot more curves and graphics in the Android Market than iOS (and I've looked at both...just now) and it just looks more appealing.
This is just IMO, but good job Google, I like it.
Went back to stock in hope of receiving market update. Nothing so far, am on the european desire z
I got the new Market this afternoon. Looks flashier but I find the carousel thing at the top of the screen doesn't work too well, and it's hard to flick it to the exact app that you want to look at without pressing on it. Maybe that's just me though ?

It does take a minute to load, wherein it's laggy, but after a minute or two the carousel works just fine for me (short swipes usually just move it one over).

Wishlist / can this be fixed without days/weeks of research or will I have to switch?

Okay, so I made the jump from iPhone 4S to SGS3 T-999 at the beginning of September this year and my experience has been less than fun. Disregarding all the hardware issues, as far as software is concerned, I've been spending hours every day trying to find software that works reliably. Here's my rant of the biggest problems right now, if you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate hearing back! I was looking forward to digging into mods/hacks, etc on Android later down the road but with these basic functions that I depend on daily in my phone not there yet, I'm starting to wonder if I need to just switch back to iOS until Android is more developed. I actually used be on Android in the days of the S2 for about 2 months, but had to ultimately switch back to iOS because I simply didn't always have the time to download 20-30 clock apps to find one that works decently or test out mods and hacks for basic functions. Sure, it's fun to test try out mods and such but when your phone feels like it's broken, that's no good.
>Stock camera app doesn't allow taking pictures/video/flash at a certain level of battery. wtf, why samsung?! I have yet to find a camera app that does video/photo as well as the stock camera app.
>Image compression & resize tool for when e-mailing photos/images quickly...like in iOS would be great, or even something that actually works would be better. Note to Samsung--most people don't want or need to get an e-mail of your 8mp picture taken on your cell phone.
>Audiobook player that saves my spot
>Least buggy PDF reader with search, annotations and highlighting
>Tethering that works (no luck so far with fox fi and a few others, I'm using T-mobile MyMonthly 4G)
>File transfer over USB on my Mac (Latest version of lion, macbook pro 2.4ghz c2d pre-unibody)
>Find my iPhone equivalent with a web interface as opposed to just text message operation
>iOS clock app equivalent. I have downloaded probably more than 2 dozen timer/clock/alarm apps and none of them do it all while staying on in the background and not randomly closing. Also would be great if I didn't lose my timer if the app or phone has to be restarted/killed.
>Make a complete backup on my Mac instead of backing it up to my SD card and then having to copy that to my computer.
This list used be a lot longer...but with much sweat I have found some solutions or learned to cope, but not for everything that is vital^...

I don't understand what "basic" functions you are having issues with? Other than the camera not working after a certain %, it's not like a PDF reader with annotations and highlighting is a "basic" function.. nor are rely any of the other things on your list except maybe image compression.
That being said, I don't know a camera solution for Touchwiz but on AOSP there are no restrictions to when you can take a picture with regards to battery.
Repligo Reader is a great PDF reader. I don't know about search but I can highlight and annotate.
You need to download the app Android File Transfer to transfer via USB on your Mac.
If you're in Monthly4G, tethering is not included. This is an issue with your plan. If you want to tether, root your phone.
There are plenty of "find my android" apps out there, that work exceptionally well. I use Avast!.
AOSP also has a timer and stopwatch built in, so maybe you should try that.
You cannot backup your phone directly to your computer.
I am more than happy to help you, as I am sure most people here are, but I think you need to lower your expectations on "basic" features..

Yeah, I spent several hours trying to trouble shoot this and just decided it would be easier to use vmware and try to dig up a copy of windows xp i had lying around...ugh..
joshnichols189: Thank you for your help!
By basic, I guess I wasn't necessarily referring to all stock functions...but on the iPhone I found many apps on the App store that accomplished this task competently. Primarily I used Good reader, but there were others so it seemed like something that wouldn't be difficult to come across. I have found a few apps that provide such a function but end up missing others or are too buggy to use. I will have to check which apps specifically I tried with no success if that will help...will look into Repligo Reader, thanks!
As for tethering: I was able to get it to work on an S2 (i9100) running gingerbread using my MyMonthly4G plan using the native tethering feature. I've rooted my phone sucessfully but haven't gotten around looking into custom roms and such..still using stock (but rooted). If you or anyone here knows any especially good tethering solutions for rooted t-999 users running stock it'd be super helpful to hear.
I will have to do research on AOSP.

Be sure to try Repligo, I believe they have a free/lite version! I wasn't able to tether when I was on Monthly4G so maybe it is different now. If you are rooted you should look at the WiFi Tether for Root app. I believe you can find it easily with a Google search. Also be sure to look into AOSP, you might like it more but if not you can always revert!

Just download wifi tether from play store and that will definitely tether anything you want.

The camera would need to be modded. Someone will likely do this at some point.
Theres a full office suite on sale for .25 that may take care of your pdfs and then some. OfficeSuite pro.
For file transfers, you can use SGS3 Easy UMS. It only works for external sdcard though. Many people have been trying to do the same for internal but no luck yet as far as I know. Search for it on xda.
Also on file transfering, have you looked at a wireless transfer solution? I use SwiFTP and love it. Gives me access to the entire file system on my phone, including /system.
There are quite a few find my phone types like youre looking for that get good reviews. Check cerebrus. Haven't used it on this phone but liked it in the past.
My favorite alarm clock app is Alarm Clock Plus. Been using it for a few years now. No stopwatch or timer but hoping the dev adds em in the future.
For the backup, are you talking about a nandroid type backup or apps and data? Nandroid, no backing up straight to computer. Im pretty sure there are apps thatll backup your data and apps like that though. Never used any though. (And theres always adb!)
Tip: when people see a thread with this many questions and youre not experiencing a critical problem, it can look a bit overwhelming and seems like you may be demanding answers without really looking for them yourself. (Not saying thats your case and not trying to be an ass). Additionally at first read/glance it looks like it could be a lot of work to help you for what many might consider to be simple problems. In the future dont wait so long and ask everything at once. Ask your questions as they come and you cant find the answers yourself.
I saw your thread when it was first posted but didnt reply because I knew it would take much longer than I could spend at that moment.
One last thing, if people perceive you to be threatening to leave for the iphone if you dont get what you want, you are much less likely to find help now or in the future.
Like I said, im not trying to be an ass or belittle or anything like that. Just telling you what some (many?) people may think when they just glance over your thread.
Sorry for the little rant, but I am trying to help you.
Btw, if you're having such bad hw issues you may have a defective device. Majority of people have no problems.
Good luck!
