First lets go over rooting: Rooting is a technique that lets you get past all the security locking down your phone (more or less). It allows you to put in your own recoveries and read/write portions of the phone that could not have been done before. Basically when it comes down to it to unlock "full nand" there are usually 2 steps to do it manually one gets you a basic root which allows you some level of access and the second step gives you full nand which replaces your "hboot" with the engineering version allowing you complete control.
ok now on to themes - for the most part yes you need to root to change themes. These are flashed just like custom roms. which you do by powering down the phone holding the vol down button and the power button till your hboot comes up and select recovery. this should take you to what ever recovery you have installed (normally clockwork for newer people) and yuoc an select flash zip from sd.
As for making changes or making your own themes i am not very familiar with it so i will leave that to another to go over. hopefully that answered some of your questions if not feel free to ask.

yes that does help a lot how do i know what kind of recovery i want all i really want to do themes and takbar and icons

the recovery is basically just the interface you use to flash/backup, I would just stick with clockwork unless you find a theme/rom instructing you otherwise. Most methods of rooting have you put it on through the steps and no reason to change it unless you have to if not using it much.
as for changing JUST app icons you can actually do that without root but you need an app. I havent used it but i believe bettercut works to do this. you can make folders with appOrganizer or folder organizer, and you can change your "dock" and icons on the dock using a new launcher (LauncherPro /ADW are poular) all without rooting.
Changing menu icons and notification/taskbar colors etc though does require rooting.

thanks for ur help really do appericate it im going to atemp to root it now is it hard to do and do i have to worry about bricking or any bad **** happening

it isnt to hard to do just take it one step at a time. There is always some risk of something going wrong but following the direction I feel it is very slim that you brick your phone. I think using simpleroot is probably the easiest if you have the 1.47 ota already (menu >settings >about phone> software information >software number), I haven't used it but have heard good things. Just remember to tell it to update your recovery.

How to install NFSFAN's custom Roms

Hi i was wondering if there was anyone out there who was kind enough to explain in detail how to install this Rom because by the looks of the pictures and the reviews, it is a great Rom. OH and if there is an answer to this already, please direct me to it because i have searched for hours and cannot find anything.
Thanks in advance
How far is your knowledge when it comes to custom ROMs? Do you have your phone unlocked?
If your phone isn't unlocked, go here:http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
I could use a little help to. My phone is unlocked and I have flashed another rom before but when I download the rom file I can't do anything with it. I seem to remember using another program to handle the rom file before flashing but I have looked and looked and have come up empty handed. Someone pointing in the right direction would be great.
Basically I am stuck between getting the file on the computer and starting to flash. I can get my phone to the color screen and all.
Terms you should know before-hand, haha:
-The color RGB color screen is called the Bootloader mode (you get to it by holding the power button + camera button, and sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-Hard-reseting: Flashing the phone to default state of the flashed ROM. (Hold talk key + end call key, and sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-Soft-reseting: Simply restarting your phone. (Sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
0. Unlock Phone. (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370)
1. Go in to Boot-loader mode. (Text towards the bottom of the screen
should read "Serial" if you phone isn't connected to the PC.)
2. Connect phone to PC. ("Serial" text should change to "USB")
3. Extract the files from .rar file you download. (Use Winrar.)
4. Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe and follow the on screen instructions.
- Your phone will start showing a progress bar when the flashing starts.
- Once done, the phone will restart. (Should reset and windows should boot, but still do step 5.)
5. Hard-reset the phone.
6. Dance in place.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
*pants* Hope that helps!
Stickfigure, thanks a bunch for your summary of the ROM loading process! My Sprint Touch has been giving me lots of problems (freezing on incoming calls, data connection stops working randomly, phone not wanting to get out of roam and back into EV mode, and many many more). Needless to say, it is frustrating and I want to throw it at a wall. I'm sure my reset button is going to fail since I've poked it so many times.
Anyways, I've been wanting to install a custom ROM and finally have the chance during my spring break from classes, but I wasn't quite sure how to do it. Your post definitely helps.
One more question...is the process basically the same if I want to install a different custom ROM? If you know of any other tutorial or noob info pages that might help me I'd appreciate it too.
Thanks again!
Stickfigure, thanks for the instructions. Winrar was the piece that I was missing. Once I installed that I had the new rom installed the the phone was working fine in a bout 15 minutes.

There are some great tutorials out there for beginners, one of the best of which is Dharvey's "UPDATED- CONSOLIDATED Rev A./GPS TUTORIAL" found on PPCGeeks; it is no longer available for some reason, but you may be able to find a repost somewhere.
Thanx
Thankx every one who contributed to this thread because it really helped.

[q] come on!!!!! One simple root evo!??!

Come on people.. i know there is someone out there.. that can do something to simply CLICK ONE button and get the EVO ROOTED..!!! I KNOW There is several out there.. but they all say Not supported for EVO.. because blah blah blah.. lol..
NOW COME ON.. I KNOW U GUYS ARE SMART.. I just want mine to be rooted with one click..
If you aren't confident that you can follow a few easy steps to root your EVO, then you're better off not rooting it at all. Ever.
Confidence is key, even my scary a$$ did it lol
Swyped from my HTC EVO 4G via xda app
Demanding things from devs is not smart thats why the epic has so few devs left. you want it you do itz, ASK if someone can, or get over it all the rooting methods on here are very simple
Sent from my unrEVOked using xda app
A friend of mine rooted his Evo yesterday by himself, and he knows so little about these phones, that he had to call me during the process to ask me how to check if USB debugging was enabled on his phone.
If he can do it.....TRUST ME.....so can you. lol
it does looks super easy.. and im sure i could do it.. but im just scared..lmao.. but i know ill do it one of this days.. just say.. **** IT.. lol it would be better to be an app with just one button to do it..
The thing is that pretty much anything you do with root is going ot be far more dangerous than the actual rooting process. If you can't handle rooting you probably won't want to do anything else. (with the exception of one or two apps)
Flashing themes, or new ROMS or anything else will **** your phone up if you're not careful, far more easily than the fairly simple rooting procedure will.
And really - I used a three click rooting method. Is three clicks that much more scary than one?
the root process is copy and paste easy the devs have tried to make it easy as possible so start thanking them and not demanding they work hard to even have a root for the phone let it go its easy copy and paste lol not that hard to read a guide that is made very simple if you are not comfatable rooting then dont try it at all because ones you root u need a custom rom cant be scared dude there is almost a fix for everthing exspecially if you ask the devs nicaly they will guide you throu problems i have only seen one brick that could not be fixed and that was i did it on purpose installed a wroung bootloader on 2.02
stop being a baby ! lol and do it
What do you mean ill need a new custom rom before i root it?

Quick question? Why are you rooting your evo? If you have no good reason, you really shouldn't.
simple root 1click 4 evo
i have been on the fence on wether i should root or not and i think i am ready to root my evo. i have been doing some research and it looks like i have two options that would be best. i could dowload the sdk and root my phone that way or i could download the ota simple root 1click version 1.47.651.1. i saw a video on the simple root that had 4 clicks and then you had to go to extras and flash a recovery. it all seamed pretty simple but when i went to download the ota simple root file, instead of giving me 4 buttons it only gave me 2. it said it was the lastest version and so i went with it. i clicked the root button and it pulled up the command box and started doing it thing but after pushing the files it said that the adb was outdates and it was killing it got an error and it tried again went to pushing the pc36 said the adb was out of date again and gave error then continued to push the flash file os somthing like that.... and again it said adb out of date killing but gave error tried again and again and again... ect. until it went to red screen telling me when my phone screen had skating adroid men on it push power button to reboot and so on..... push any key to continue but phone never went to screen with android men. went over the whole process again and this time when red screen came up i did a factory reset and still nothing happened except for when it got to my home screen it said please wait while loading my take awhile then went to white screen with just htc and then back to home screen. i know this seems like a lot but the more thorough the better. can anyone help or point in the right direction? THANK YOU!!!

Tutorial Somewhere?

Is there a FAQ or something somewhere that someone could point me to?
I used to have a Windows Mobile phone and learned all about custom roms, unlocking, how to install apps, create shortcuts, customize the home screen, etc.
Then I went to a Blackberry.
Now I've just purchased an Epic 4G and I feel like I have to start all over again.
When I say tutorial, I want to know what the general steps behind putting in a custom rom are, and little bit about the Android platform - base OS, added extras, how to install apps manually; it seems that manufacturers convolude the phones so much with their own stuff that I don't even know what a base Android install looks like.
Any help to point me in the right direction would be most appreciated.
Thanks!

First off, Welcome!
I hope you enjoy your time here and here is a link to the Epic 4g Wiki. If you run into issues, the forums moderators ask you to search first and only if you cannot find a solution to your problem that way then post your question. If you need specific help installing roms or cool fixes most of us would be happy to oblige you!
1st: Look in the development section for the sticky that says 1 click root.
2nd: Follow Those Instructions, Really Easy..
3rd: Come Back to the development section then look for a kernal or rom or both.
4th: once you find that copy them to somewhere on your sd card.. then Hold the camera button, powerbutton and volume up and down.
5th: you should now be in a green menu called clockwork mod
6th: now navigate in clockwork (with the volume up and down and camera to select or the dpad on the keyboard and enter to select) goto Install zip from sd card then select choose zip
7th: valah Flash away!!
Make sure you read instructions for flashing certain froyo roms and read up on everything before you do it, thats all you have to do is follow instructions and read!!
Hope this helps
Have a nice day!!
Oh come on, you couldn't find it? All you have to do is click on Wiki at the top of the page that takes you completely away from the Epic4g section. Then you have to look on the right under Samsung Smartphones and select Samsung Galaxy S. Then you have to scroll down and click on SPH-D700. If you click on the picture of your phone you will be taken to a completely irrelevant page dealing only with the image. You cannot click on Epic4g as its not a link. Easy as Apple pie.
/ridiculous sarcasm
Why is there not a sticky discussing basic topics like rooting and Odin and rom flashing and themes? Are we trying to make it as difficult as possible for new users to drive them away or something?

Star A2000 Chinese phone with MT6516 chipset want to root 2.3.6, did search

Hello, I am new here and I tried to post in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285573 but I have not made the 10 required posts.
I am only looking to root my phone so that I can make it a little faster. The LauncherPro app did a lot already but I failed on findind a decent typing keyboard
Also, would like to run VM Heap manager and look in to a bit of overclocking the CPU
However, after passing the masochistic Captcha on this forum , I can post here. The above thread I posted the link of speaks about a Startools.zip which is not to be found it also has some other attachements I feel are not useful to me.
However, I did install z4root (just downloaded somewhere, not sure if that is a problem) and tried *temporary* root. Which does not work, it says it works, but it doesn't according to several rooted apps.
I am not in to changing ROMS or such, not sure about Clockwork mod or restoring factory settings either, I would like to delete the stupid Imo beta software for example and other ones who seem to start and login unasked and I can kill them it starts itself up again and that is annoying because it is my phone!
Now I did not dare to try to root my device with z4root by hitting the root permanently button as adviced in that topic.
However, what should I do? It is just so I require the extra speed and I am happy with this phone which with added speed like LauncherPro already is doing a decent job I feel with a good price/ performance
Please help me a bit, I searched, oh yes, I searched.
regards,
Richard
p.s. It is running Android 2.3.6 I am happy with, I don't feel the need to upgrade this thing, want to make it faster only, not brick it or take unneccasry risk it is a phone ffs

Hi, that is exactly where I looked, see my first post.
The issue I have is that I was unable to find a good way of rooting, one that is safe.
Now people say that rooting can be unsafe but there is not explained how.
Assuming the rooting software is properly programmed, I fail to find if an unsuccesful rooting attempt will leave the phone's software unchanged.
Also there is no confirmation on this Star A2000 if it is rootable or not. There is a manual saying use z4root but this didn't seem to work, atleast the temporary root did not work at all, and this manual did just say permanent root it, not permanent root it because temporary root won't work.
I can't tell if there is a difference in a temporary root and a permanent root with z4root, I don't know what it is doing there.
I mean that I am not worried about the change's I am able to make to my phone, after it is succesfully rooted. I know Linux.
I also won't try changing ROM's, all I want is to change the memory heap to speed it up a little bit and disable the start up scripts of unwanted software that is booted all the time, advanced task killer, the Android way of managing applications is able to kill them and the system just starts them again. That is annoying.
I am after only this, I won't deinstall programs, I just would disable some of them because I might later find I need them again.
I also won't disable or remove vital software for the phone booting.
But how hard can it be for rooting software publisher, to tell to their users it is safe to attempt rooting, even if it can't be rooted, or in other words, will it leave the telephone software untouched with an unseccesful attempt and will a succesful root also ensure a succesful reboot of the phone?
IMHO, that is all I need to know about rooting and I can't find anything about that anywhere.

[GUIDE][ROOT][CWM] ARCHOS 97b Platinum HD

I came upon this device on Christmas (a gift from my girlfriend to her father) and wanted to root it and also install clockworkmod recovery, so I could mess with it a bit without bricking it. Since I found a lack of tailored guides for it, I decided to write this one, although I really did no actual development whatsoever. Normally I would be posting this on general, but given the spirit of this forum, I guess I'll just leave it here. Also, keep in mind I don't have the device anymore and am writing this from memory. If I missed anything or you have any doubts, please let me know (for example, I can't recall specifically the drivers I installed to make it work properly).
Please, please read the whole guide before trying anything, and if you are a novice user, just leave this be, I don't want you to turn your tablet into a paperweight because of my shoddy instructions written from memory and you probably don't need any of this anyway as there are no custom roms yet.
!!!DISCLAIMER!!!: As stated above, anything you do is at your own risk. I provided the procedures that worked for me on a Qilive 97r tablet, which is an Auchan branded ARCHOS 97b Platinum HD, so my step by step should work for all of you. There are probably easier ways to do this, and I hint at them in the guide, but beware I have not tried them and cannot vouch for them. In fact, I cannot and will not take any responsability if you brick your device following these instructions, correctly or otherwise. You do this at YOUR OWN RISK. You have been warned!
Rooting:
I followed this guide on Windows 7 x64 and it worked perfectly.
So thanks to dhigby for that. I would just like to make a couple of remarks:
When you get to step 7 (Installing Superuser by ChainDD), don't. Install SuperSU by Chainfire instead, Use it to update the superuser binary (I think a prompt shows up) and when asked, let it delete the "other" superuser applications, that is, the chinese one. Clean and easy, you don't need to follow any more steps.
Congratulations, you now have (english language) root!
Clockworkmod Recovery:
There is no specific recovery for this device. Fortunately, thanks to AndroTab.info, there's a generic version for 3188 devices that you'll see should work quite nicely, albeight with some caveats.
What works:
Nandroid backup to/from external SDCard (won't recognize internal)
Installing zip files should also work, although I didn't try it at the time, as the device wasn't mine and I can't since I don't have it anymore, but since it mounts system partitions perfectly well I wouldn't think there would be a problem. Try it at your own risk though.
Other things probably work, give it a try.
What doesn't work:
Internal SDCard access
Probably other things
Installation:
Now that you have a rooted tablet, installing clockworkmod recovery is easy-peasy. Go to developer options and enable USB Debugging, then make sure you have a working adb daemon (look it up) that recognizes your tablet.
NOTE: I'm not sure if I had to install any specific drivers for this to work, I think if so they were installed while rooting by the chinese app. Anyhow, here's the Rockchip drivers, you might want to try to install them if you can't get a connection: http://www.rockchip.nl/downloads/
Download the file RK30GENERIC_CWM.zip from here - that's the recovery.
Now extract flash_image and recovery.img from the downloaded file above to the folder where you have your adb and follow the following commands.
Push the files to /dev partition on the device:
Code:
adb push flash_image /dev/
adb push recovery.img /dev/
Then enter root shell, like so:
Code:
adb shell
su
Now flash recovery.img into recovery partition with flash_image:
Code:
chmod 755 /dev/flash_image
/dev/flash_image recovery /dev/recovery.img
Now power off your device. To enter recovery press volume down then the power button and keep them pressed until CWM boots. Voilá!
NOTE: The instructions above were adapted from here and all credit goes to AndroTab.info ; I posted these particular instructions because they are the ones I used and worked for me; there are other methods listed on that page which might or might not work, TRY THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Backing up your original recovery (for warranty, if anything goes wrong, etc.)
To obtain a backup image of your recovery \ restore it back afterwards, follow this guide here. All credit goes to Originalas.
Don't follow it to the letter though: first and foremost, you need a working linux installation. If you don't have one, I recommend Wubi.
Then:
Follow step 1;
Ignore step 2 (it's outdated);
Follow 3;
Follow 4 - but don't expect the screen to turn on, it won't, just hold the volume down button for 10 seconds or so after plugging it in, don't press the power button!
Ignore 5, 6 and 7
Follow 8, but don't use the last command to flash the CWM recovery onto the device. This is because since it is a generic version, it relies on the original recovery kernel. Flashing the image like stated in step 8 would probably overwrite the kernel and result in no recovery at all (I might be wrong about this).
Do follow the last command to restore your own backup if you ever need to.
I am unsure if recovery dumps obtained in this way are device specific; I don't see a reason why they should be, so I'll provide you with my own backup:
ORIGINAL RECOVERY
Flash through any method of your choice, but keep in mind I haven't tried this on other devices, so, as you know by now DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Closing remarks:
There you have it. Sorry for not holding your hand through every step, but this is meant for people who know a bit of what they're doing, making it faster than having to look up and figure out all these things and quirks on their own. If you have any doubts don't hesitate to ask, but keep in mind I don't have the device anymore and don't know much more than what I have written here. I do appreciate feedback and corrections, and will gladly change the guide giving you full credit - if it's really urgent just PM me, I might not check this thread often.
Cheers!

I wouldn't keep my hopes up on custom roms. The software is really bad and what it does with the hardware is terrible. It's like a bunch of chipmunks put the code together by randomly typing into a keyboard.
That said, the likelihood of a new kernel to fix that is next to nil. However, since the ROM is as far as I can tell pretty near stock, you can get a pretty good experience from the device by installing gravity box xposed module. I also recommend trickstermod and changing the governor to performance, as well as some kernel tweaking if you know what you are doing.
Also, very important, limit the amount of processes running in the background to 3 in dev settings or change the used memory limit to something like 1.2 gb. It has 2 gb of RAM, but, as I said, the ROM sucks, the system eats away a full gigabyte, and it doesn't effectively kill background apps, leaving you with a sluggish device if you multitask.
Anyway, those are just some ideas, if you have some more or would like to code for this device, feel free to share Also, as I always say, give it time. You never know who is gonna get they're hands on the device and do something amazing with it.

hi and thanx for the answer
yes i saw that it's almost stock but crappy optimized...in the very first start of the tablet i had 1.8gb occupied by nothing and clean master always notifies me that 90% of the ram is busy...meh
maybe just a kernel will fix like you say but you know, android 4.4 will be a must (rockchip already released sdk for 3188). I am not a coder (totally zero) but i will try your suggestion...just a question about the performance governor, does it drain more battery?
i am trying to backup my rom but cwm is so buggy...first was impossible, now i'm stuck on backing up boot image
there is a twrp available for this tablet?
solved
