New to Froyo and 3 questions! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: 4questions !
Hi guys. I just installed the 2.2 update via OTA, but now i got "3 little problems". Since i didnt find them via search buttom, i'd like to ask them here.
1.- Most settings are the same as before (2.1), but for example, Google Talk changed my nickname, from my name to my e-mail. I know there was a way to change it, but i dont find the way to...
I know people can change my nickname, so each one sees me with the nickname they want, but the "default one" was my name and now's my e-mail
2.- Facebook events + brithdates. Is there a way to disable them? I got all kind of connections from facebook disabled.. but dont find this new feature so i can disable it.
3.- Flash. I found on market Adobe Flash Player 10.1. Wasn't it supposed to be enabled by default? I mean. Should i install it? Is it better than default? I dont understand anything since i read that 2.2 came with default 10.1... but there's an app, from Adobe.
4.- Is is recommended to do a hard reset after updating? I mean. I got all apps from 2.1 installed. And since I update, none of them were removed, etc. Do I lose some speed or something if i dont hard reset? Maybe Hard Reseting + Reinstalling ALL apps make my device to run EVEN smoother and faster than it does. (It goes faster now than before with 2.1, but maybe...)
See you soon and thanks for all!!!

Bump !!!

I believe HTC have just included this in their ROM.

I quick off-and-on again or battery pull if it slows down should suffice.

So 2.- Solved 100%
Still need help on:
1.-
3.-
4.-
Since 2 is exactly what we needed and 1,3,4 are things that you believe. Thank you very much !!!
w8ing for more answers

3 - included as default in the official rom
4 - always recommended when installing a new system, if not this could lead to bugs and performance issues. The official froyo is also odexed there's a chance your apps may conflict. if you have the time to hard reset then it's defo recommended.
don't know about the google talk thing though sorry.

3. and 4. answered
1. is still missing

[Q] HOW to save preferences?

HI!
Since we are changing from version to version because all of these are testing releases, there is any way to save the user preferences to put automaticaly in newer versions? so we dont need to go to the Configs again and put everything like we want.

Hrm... there's a lot of things that could be lumped into 'preferences' - do you mean apps? Their data? Your homescreen? Little configuration settings in the 'Settings' app? Perhaps all of the above?
I believe TitaniumBackup will get your apps&data... I'm not too sure about other prefs tho.
Honestly, if you keep your data.img it should work - but obviously you can't always hang onto the file, and quite often you have to delete it to get rid of oddities in the system.
I hope that helps...
HI!
Thanks for the reply!
What i really want and i think the most simple but important is the system settings, because in every releases they are almost the same, so i think we can import from the older one and it will be more simple to change

[Q] Launcher pro bricked my phone

Hi,
I have the Htc Desire android 2.1 with launcher pro. I loved it until recently it is showing that Launcher Pro has expired & it won't allow me to do anything. I restarted the phone, took out the battery but nothing seems to work. I am basically locked out because I trusted this product. Please help me out here, I would appreciate it. Again, htc Desire 2.1,launcher pro free version saying expired & opening up the browser only. I can't do anything else & I can't reboot as I would lose my contacts & data.
I tried looking at the solutions provided over the internet but nothing suits my situation. A lot of those solutions work for android 2.2 but I have 2.1 which I cannot update right now. Please help me people.
Thanks in advance. My phone is bricked until one of you guys can tell me a solution.
First of all that is not a brick. Second can you get in to settings? If yes, got to application management go to launcherpro and clear the defaults hit the home button and select the Sense launcher or download 'ClearDefaultHome' and clear the defaults. If that does not work you can do a factory reset but you will lose all your data.
And last where did you get that version of launcher pro? From the market?
Same problem here - but for the HTC Wildfire...
I'm having exactly the same problem - My version of Launcher pro was downloaded from the Android Market and has worked fine until this morning when it expired.
My phone will not let me access my home screen or any of my applications. When I press 'Home' it just takes me to my browser which contains an error message stating 'You do not have permission to access /index.php on this server. Additionall, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request'.
As I cannot access my home screen, I am unable to access my settings in order to manage my applications and uninstall Launcher Pro... Starting to panic now!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!
Thanks x
Not bricked.
Erm, your phone is not bricked.
Well the way i see it,
1) you could email the maker of launcher pro and explain your situation, though I think its more of a user error
2) Do what TheGhost1233 said, try to go into your settings, and select clear default on launcher pro app. Use htc sense again.
3) factory reset everything and set up everything once again
4) root and flash a new rom (Its more fun )
edit* For people who can't access their settings, try downloading another app that allows you to change settings.
If a factory reset is a to big of a step you could also try to remover launcherpro (in recovery) via ADB.
Thanks for your replies! As ghost1233 and friedkimchi suggest, I am unable to go into my settings or do absolute anything with the phone. I have the exact same problem as described by the other person in this thread of not being able to anything but just go to the browser which I cannot use because wifi is not enabled and cannot be because I can't access anything.
I bought the launcher pro from the android market and it was a free version which I have been using for months now. I seriously want to avoid the factory reset thing until I can because I do not want to lose the data. If I have to then I will but just trying to see if I can avoid it somehow. Nothing seems to be working now.
Yes The Ghost1233, factory reset is a big step because I would lose all my data and contacts. But then, what is ADB and I thought recovery meant factory reset.

Thanks, this seems helpful and points us in the direction where everyone is suggesting us to go to i.e. install ADB and uninstall Launcher pro in recovery mode. There is this video provided in this link which tells how to do that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1SOSXwkc_8
Is this what you guys think is the last resort we have here for this problem and if I install ADB, would that be make my phone rooted?
Thanks for all your help and replies!
No it won't root your phone but you will run in to the problem that your phone probably does not have USB debugging enabled.
But i suggest you follow the linked thread (the launcherpro forums) for further help.
I do not obviously want to run into any kind of problems. What do you suggest then. This is not something that I am choosing, I did not find any other options. Please suggest what would be my options given my situation. I am not a nerd so I do not know if I will be able to do all this installation thing properly or not. This was kind of a relief that this would not root my phone. I don't know why I am afraid of it but I really like the handset and I don't want it to be screwed because of anything.
Thanks
a coworker of mine had the same issue today. I'm just reposting the link from another website, since I typically come to xda to find answers to stuff like this... either manually type this into your ANDROID browser, or if you could somehow make it to this page from your phone, just click this link... from your phone lol
market://search?q=pnamerg.adw.launcher
it is the direct adwlauncher link to the android market!
hope this helps! =)

Yes, that's right. It was a free version that I have downloaded from the android market.
idk if some of you are still having the same problem but if you are, i got this from another forum and it seemed to work for them:
Hold down the 'home' key in order to start your native task manager.
You should see the Settings icon, probably in the bottom right, of your tasks.
If you don't see Settings, double-tap your Home key in order to open Voice Dialing. When it opens, say 'Open Settings.'
Once you're in Settings, go to Applications, and remove LauncherPro.
Hope this helps.

if that doesn't work you, and could open the browser type this in:
(it should download adw launcher)
bubiloop.com/download/org.adw.launcher
ps. my cousin had this problem and search for a solution and found it, just thought i would share since. xda always helps me out
Hey, I tried doing all this except for the download thing but it does not work. I cannot download anything because wifi is disabled and there is no way I can enable it. If I could have had a back up of my data I would have probably tried the hard reset.
I really appreciate all you folks to try and help me out. I am still trying.

Some questions before I pull the trigger on cyanogen

So I am seriously considering Cyanogen once CM7 comes out with gingerbread, but before I do, I have a few questions that have been bugging me, that I can't seem to find answers to...
Can I ever get back to stock Sense if I don't like CM, and if so, how difficult is it? This is perhaps my largest question.
Does Cyanogen Mod update itself, or will I have to flash it everytime a new version is released?
Will all apps install normally, or do some have issues on CM?
Is there any way to get my contacts to only display people with phone numbers, like on sense?
is there any way to get Facebook integration into my contacts like on sense?
Sorry for the newb questions
1. Yup, just flash any Sense ROM (or the stock RUU) as you normally would. There are plenty of guides for going back to stock, to include the stock ROM, unrooting, and S-On.
2. You flash, but you don't have to wipe data (and really shouldn't). Just wipe cache and Dalvik, and it will perform like a clean install, but retain your apps, data, and settings.
3. I haven't seen any apps perform differently on CM 6.1.0 than on any Sens eROM I've used (Redemption, Skyraider, Virtuous, stock).
4. Not sure, haven't messed with this.
5. Yes. The FB app gives you the option to sync contacts. I don't use this feature, so I can't tell you how well it works.
4. Yes
There is an option to only display contacts w/ phone numbers.
The CM Nightlies are going on now, but you don't need every version due to there only being a few changes for each (some none at all). Stick with a version that works (i'm on #10) and wait for a major change.
I loved Sense, until i tried CM
Thanks for the response!

Actually, I was referring to how Sense will update existing contact info with information from their fb profile (images, birthdays, email, etc).

In this case I am uncertain, as I do not use the feature.

You should always wipe everything and perform a truly clean install. If you ever have a problem with a rom, and haven't done this, it's the first thing you will be told to do.

Not according to the Cyanogen team. When you're upgrading within the same ROM family, this is absolutely not needed. Same as going from Virtuous 3.1 to 3.2, for example.
In rare cases, a ROM developer will usually tell you to wipe data for a specific upgrade, or will have the ROM install do it as part of the installation process.

Either the Facebook App or CyanogenMod does this on my phone.
if you use vlingo, it still has force close issues with cm7.

I agree with you. It only takes seconds to do. I really don't care if someone tells me that I don't have to wipe everything before I flash... I do it EVERY time.

[Q] Where to start?

Hi guys
I'm totally noob with android.i need guidance on where to start. My defy is totally stock, without any modification done.
1. Get a moto blur account and link with a google account
2. Go to android market on a pc browser, check through the top free category
3. Try them on...

Hey "I was" a noob too with Android! I just got my first android phone January and I really didn't know what to do with it!
Well, where to start, it's easy.
Just go to settings and all the apps, and explore all the options and features of the Defy!
Like that you will know your phone very well.
Then you would like to download apps and widgets and live wallpapers!
You will test them and with time you will know what are the good/pros and bad/cons applications.
There is the stock launcher, but it can be replaced by another launcher that you can download from market! (ex: Go launcher EX, LauncherPro, etc)
You will notice that The homescreens and app drawer will be completely different, and it's 100% safe.
If you wish to root the devices and install new ROMS, just wait.
Yes. Wait for about 3 months to know well the world of Android before trying dangerous things that could brick your phone.
If you just got the Defy, do the basic things like play movies/musics, take photos, install new apps, etc.
Hope it helped you!!
If you have other questions, I'll help you
OK, since I wish that someone took the time to reply to me when I first got my defy and posted a similar question here, I will throw in some suggestions to you.
First, make sure that your PC has the latest Motorola drivers installed.
Second, learn how to Root your phone --> probably with Super1click
[you did not tell us which firmware you have so it's hard to point you in a specific direction here]
.
Then once that's done:
Instead of using the default "Files" --> use Astro file manager;
Instead of using the stock browser --> use Dolphin HD;
Protect your phone with AVG free (antivirus) and DroidWall (firewall);
Use Titanium Backup to make copy of your apks and settings and to "freeze" the bloatware on your phone;
Use SetVSel (needs Milestone overclock to run) to lower the cpu voltages and under/overclock your cpu and save battery*;
*: just did that myself and after > 10 hours since unplugged, my phone is still showing battery at 100% !!! [set to: 22/300 - 34/600 - 46 Vsel/900 MHz]
Learn to install/use ClockWorkmod (CWM) recovery and RSD Lite for Nandroids/ROMs flashing.
That should keep you busy for a while but it's nothing too hard and I'd say that all this is the very minimum that every Defy user should know and do to get the max out of their phone.
And if I may add:
1- forget about animated wallpapers: they just waste battery power
and
2- before playing with themes, lauchers and custom ROMs [which -like everything- are NEVER "100% safe"...even if it is for human error..] you should master all the items on my list first...
Good luck! I hope this helps.

enable a disabled app?

I've disabled lots of apps I won't use - great feature, but I want to re-enable the stock browser to use it's download video feature.
Out of the whole list it's the only one that hasn't got a highlighted, 'pressable' enable button??
I tried uninstalling the Firefox Beta thinking it might ask what browser I wanted to use but no go.
Anybody got any idea please?

i had this too. but i had to do factory reset anyway, so that solved the problem. but otherwise i couldn't find a solution of how to re-enable stock browser
I couldn't even disable the stock browser so can't help there, but I could in 1.28
Ah... it's Eddy Elevate Didn't get an answer over there on the new help section so thought I'd risk it on here!
I think I'll just stick with Firefox, I really don't want to do a factory reset just after I've got everything just as I want it. I couldn't be bothered with another restore
Unless anyone else has an answer....
There must be a way of doing it, perhaps some sort of adb command?
