[Q] Internet ???? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

These are most likely stupid questions for you experts, but it is driving me crazy. I am using the stock AT&T rom that came with the phone.
1) What do I use WiFi or AT&T? I also have a wireless modem setup at my office and at home. Can I connect to these? What is "Mobile Web" for?
2) How do I know what browser I am connecting to? I have Opera and Internet Explorer. Most of the time Opera does not every connect. I have even downloaded Opera 10, but I cannot find it.

1. If both are present, use whatever you want. WiFi can sometimes be faster, so if its available you may prefer WiFi when its available. But ATT's internet will work almost everywhere that has a cell phone signal.
2. I think "Mobile Web" is what the browser shortcut on the HTC interface is named on the stock ATT ROM, if I remember correctly (I'm not running stock on mine, its just called "Internet" on mine). Its just a shortcut to the browser. If you use this tab, it automatically opens to Opera.
The icon for Opera 10 should be in root directory of the Start Menu. If not, use the File Explorer (Start>Tool) and browse for "Opera10.lnk" to find where it was installed to.

PAP or CHAP Authentication?
What is this and what should my setting be? It is in the Advanced Network in the Connections Folder. I am trying to figure out why my Microsoft Mail will not come in automatically anymore. I have been playing around with my phone a lot and may have changed something that I cannot figure out what it was.
Another question is the Microsoft Direct Push - should this be on or off?

I have Opera 9, but have not found anything for Opera 10.

Did you actually install Opera 10, or just download it (somewhat common error)? It will download as a .cab file, which you then have to unpack and install by clicking on it.
If it was installed, it would show up in Remove Programs. Go to Start>Settings>System>Remove Programs, and see if Opera 10 is there.

It should be PAP.
Try not to mess around with too many things, if you don't know what they do (such as seeing the tweak on these forums). You can mess things up pretty badly. Or at least keep track of what the default option was before you change it, so you can change it back. Although if all else fails, you can hard reset (Start>Settings>System>Empty Storage). But you will lose all your data and return the phone to its factory settings.
If you want your email automatically pushed from a MS Exchange server (such as work email) when Direct Push should be on. Where do you see the setting for this?

Start>Settings>Connections>Wireless Manager

Ah, yes. That one.
I think that will cause the phone to push MS Exchange emails to your phone whenever they arrive, and cause shortened battery life. Better to just schedule ActiveSync to download your emails periodically (unless you are really that dependent on getting your email instantly). In which case, you can turn this option "off". Or if you don't use any MS Exchange services at all, you can also turn it off.

This is what I had to pay extra for due to having to get the e-mails (for work) when they come in if I am not in my office. The company is paying the bill.

Official TMO WM6 Problems

Just thought I would start a thread for problems/annoyances people have noticed with the upgrade to WM6 (RUU_Excalibur_TMO_US_1.22.531.4_4.1.13.34_02.79.90_Ship.exe)
Here is a start for me:
- The memory leak problem is just as bad as the beta I installed over a month ago.
- The homescreen reverts back to the TMobile Default Blue on a soft reset (you must rename to fix)
- The registry hack to disable the beep when you initiate a call doesn't seem to work (didn't work for me in the beta either)
Not sure what you mean by 'memory leak', but I found deleting the Voice Command shortcut from the startup folder frees up a lot of memory. Personally, I find the number 1 feature of Voice Command to be frustration, so I don't need it loading at bootup.

Try renaming the tmobile default blue homescreen xml to something else, or delete it outright. Im pretty sure thats the homescreen that defaults back when you restart the phone. I would like to state for the record that I have octrotalk installed, and have customized my homescreen with octrotalk. It essentially creates a new homescreen with all the plugins from the current and adds octrotalk to the new one, setting it. When I restart my phone it always comes up as my octrotalk screen, regardless of how the restart was done (battery removal, smarttoolkit restart, whatever.) Additionally I don't have any memory leak issues. I run quite a few apps at a time, word, excel, IE, octrotalk, outlook, a few games in and out, occasionally zatelnet, and the filemanager. I also generally close all apps Im not using anymore, but when I close all the apps I opened to run, I usually recapture around 12megs free ram. When I start up from fresh boot, Im at just under 15 megs. Atfter closing apps in the default wm5 tmobile rom, I would usually end up with 9-10 free megs.
Unless someone else can confirm that the official rom does this same stuff, I feel like you may not have upgraded your rom.
I'm having problems with mail since upgrading to WM6. I can only reveive my .mac mail, I can't send out. I've tried everything to fix it, changed the ports on the smtp setup on the Dash and still can't send out mail. This is so frustrating! I didn't have this problem in the WM6 Beta or WM5.
I'm getting absolutely no email on my wife's dash after this new ROM. I try to set up the email and at first I get a warning about Roaming (I'm not). And then it just refuses to connect to download her emails from our POP3 account.
It' so strange these email problems we're having. I am not having any problems with gmail, or aol for sending and receiving, only my .mac mail (I can only receive, not send email). I rely on this as it's my main email client. I never had any problems before the "official upgrade".
Are you all using the T-Zones plan with the jury-rigged proxy settings? That might explain it. They're moving towards T-Zones being available via the WAP browser and widdling away at other features being accessable without paying for different service levels...
im just so glad there is a forum for the dash/excalibur here instead of mixing it with the MDA like HowardForums.
Over there there is about 2million "official" threads thare are never official to begin with. lol
If I use T-Zones button and go through the wap browser and go to my email I can send and receive fine within the t-zones wap browser. The problem is with the messaging app itself that won't let me send out email with my .mac account. Even if I have the phone turned off and am using WiFi I still get "the message cannot be sent" errors.
What else can I remove from the running programs to free up memory?
I don't use the voice command either. I would like to use the live messenger but it takes up so much memory.
I wish I could just take memory off my memory card and use it as phone memory.. Or even have a option like pocket pcs do and use the program memory as system memory...
Grrr I hate havin a laggy phone, reminds me of XP on a 266mhz computer..

I use PowerControl+OMAP from http://mobile.surrealnetworks.com/DashApps.htm to overclock my phone. It overclocks the processor to 240mhz when its in use and throttles it down to 180mhz when its in standby.
There is another issue with Windows Media Player and streaming Video (e.g Orb, Videos from Windows Media Mobile, etc) where the screen rotates 90 degrees when you zoom the video to full screen.
It's been tracked on this tread:

What you describe is how T-Zones work -- if you pay more, you can do mail within the messaging app. If you pay $5.99, you can do mail via the WAP browser. Which service plan do you have?

It should have nothing to do with me having the T-Zones $5.99 plan I can send and receive with aol, and gmail with the plan, only receive with .mac, I can't even send out mail using WiFi. I was on the phone with T-Mobile today and they tried troubleshooting. They said that for some reason the smtp is getting blocked with my .mac account, they think I should call Apple. I even asked if it had anything to do with me being on the T-Zones plan, and the rep said no, it should work through WiFi since I'm not using T-Mobile's network.

The "Problem with the homescreen reverting back" is not a WM6 problem, it's a My Faves (My 5) feature. Basically, every time you turn your phone on, the My5 service detects whether you have MyFaves and changes your homescreen to the proper setting. The settings for this are saved in the registry.
The location is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\My5\Homescreen
There are two values, On and Off. Just change those to your homescreen, or try removing them altogether (haven't tried that yet).
You could also try removing the My5MsgCenter.lnk from the startup folder, but I don't know if that's the one that reads from that registry key
ha, for some reason chaznet takes every opportunity to bash the 5.99 tzones plan. i have it now with wm6, i can go to every website, i can check my hotmail by going to www.hotmail.com, and the internet seems even faster than with wm5. so it still works, and it doest seem like its going away anytime soon

Stop the Dash From Calling Home (and other data service tweaks)

One of the things that annoys me about my Dash is its habit of attempting to call home every time it boots up. I always recei a number from some service complaining that I have an unknown phone number. It would be nice to know how to turn this off.
Also, is there some way of generally making a distinction between EDGE and WiFi connections so I can avoid burning data if I don't have to? AT&T's configuration has EDGE set us as an Internet connection, and a proxy set up from The Internet to WAP Network. It's nice that Skype and Fring make a distinction between cell data and WiFi, and I'd like to carry that over o mail, MSN Messenger, ShoZu and browsers if possible. I'm willing to experiment since I have unlimited EDGE for the rest of this month.
Any ideas?
Are you referring to a received text message? Cause you'll get that if you don't disable the myfaves when you use it on the at&t network.

Yep, that's it. How do I go about disabling MyFaves? And is it possible to re-enable it later? There's the possibility that once our contract is up (or at least, once my contract is up) we'll be jumping ship to go with T-Mobile.
There's a shortcut in \Windows\Startup that you move out. I forget the name at the moment, but it should be clear.
What he said.... you will need to rename the file (whatever you want)... reboot and then you can delete it.
He can't rename the file if it's in use. Download a task manager like celetask. Open program and go to processes, kill myfavapp (I think its called), then go to the \Windows\Startup folder and remove the shortcut to the My Fav application.
Oh really? Because that is exactly how I did it. (And yes, it was running under the processes)
I've never found a successful way of renaming or moving the my5service.exe file in WM5. I did it without any problems in WM6 but I don't use it. I've searched many threads and all say recommend the same methods like deleting MyFav from the Startup Folder (which I don't see like so many). It simply can't be done or something since it's a ROM/System/ReadOnly. I tried unchecking System/ReadOnly using RescoExplorer then tried moving it using Resco and Activesync. No Go. If anybody knows how to take out my5 in WM5, please post it.
P.S.: I am using Celetask 2.2
i am running WM6.0 what i did was to go to "Comm Manager" and i turned off the "Data" & "Phone radio" icons, i restarted the phone, with the radio off i was able to delete the file, after deleting the file i turned back on the above and restarted again, no rogue text any longer
good luck

Phone attempting to access net several times per hour

I've just switched network providers and haven't set up the data connection yet, but I've noticed that the phone has been repeatedly trying to access GPRS all day - about 15-20 times between 10am and 4:30pm.
I use SPB Mobile Shell 3, and have the weather app set to update manually. I also have Outlook set to send/receive manually, so I can't work out which application is trying to access the net. Does anyone know how I can find out, before I clock up a huge data bill?
What about the auto web page loading thingy? Have you set that up???
No - I've never enabled it.
I've just installed SPB Wireless Monitor and the two processes that seem to be doing it are system.exe and services.exe. These both sound like naive WM processes, so don't really give me a clue what's going on.
I read in another post that Google Maps/Latitude may connect to the internet regularly, so I disabled that feature but there's still something connecting on a regular basis.
???
The only other thing I am aware it could be is the Manila Facebook updater that's built into the contacts part of TF3D2. Check that out:
People->All People->3rd Tab(person with a clock)->Menu->Data connection setting

I have TF3D2 disabled as I use SPB Mobile Shell. Hence I'm not even able to access the TF3D menu. Is there any way of checking this without removing SPB Mobile Shell?
Does anyone know of a program which will selectively allow internet access to specified applications only?
You could try this one: NO DATA app
Thanks - I already run NoData, but I'd like something which explicitly allows net access to some apps but not to others. That way I won't have to remember to switch GPRS on every time I want to browse, and off when I'm finished.
I finally worked out which app was accessing the net - it was the Funambol client. The newer version is set to "Push" updates by default, rather than sync manually. Now I can finally leave my 3G access enabled without fear of clocking up unexpected charges....

Hello, what is Funambol? I have the same problem (connecting to GPRS network frequently), but I didnt find such application. Thank you.
It's a SyncML client - allows synchronisation of my calendar, contacts etc with my Google calendar/Gmail contacts
Thanks for the quick reply. Do you or anybody else have any idea which application is still connection to the net? I'm using neither Opera nor TF.

Hi vikino
To answer your first question, I think it may be because you are using ActiveSnyc with Push Email enabled. If you go to Comm Manager, is the switch for "Microsoft Direct Push" on? If so, when you are on a GPRS connection and make a call your data connection will drop as only 3G or HSDPA can co-exist with an active call. Like the difference between old dial-up and modern broadband internet on your landline. If you're not using Direct Push I can't think what's causing it, but it maybe the HTC Push Internet. If it's the push email thing, you may want to consider switching off "Microsoft Direct Push" from Comm Manager and then going into ActiveSync and setting the sync schedule to "As Items Arrive" manually.
Can you please clarify your second question. It's not 100% clear what is not being displayed properly.
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
.....you know what? You're right, im using Push mail with my own mail server at home...and in the region i live in we dont have 3G it runs on Edge... Push internet i dont know where to set it up, i found it only in TF3D, but im not using it...If it is working w/o TF3D would be nice to know where to set it up...
The second thing is that on Xperia i had was nice small font in menu so in landscape fits all fields in without scrolling, on TP2 is much more bigger font and i have to scroll down for everything, programs and settings i found in top as icon...

[Q] unable to use browser but can update weather/fb/email etc?

I've got a bit of weird problem on HTC Desire.
I've noticed that whenever I'm using my mobile internet data (Vodafone Aus), I can't actually do any sort of web browsing, but I can use the facebook app, update the weather widget, retrieve email from hotmail + Gmail etc, basically everything that needs internet access except use the browser.
I've tried both the default and Dolphin HD with no luck - Google home page will load but that's only because its in the cache - I can't do any new Google searches etc.
I know the phone can access websites because I can browse the net when I connect to my uni's WiFi, or any other WiFi.
Wondering if there's some kind of mobile internet setting I should be changing that I'm not aware that might solve this?
I know I should call Vodafone and ask them to check if there's somehow a problem on my account on their end but figured I might ask on here first to see if anyone else has had anything like this happen before I do so - just so they don't turn around and tell me its the phone.
(when I went in to set up the plan, the lady specifically told me that they took no responsibility for their services working on a "non Vodafone phone")
Oh and I don't think its worthy to note, but just in case:
ever since I switched to the contract from pre-paid I haven't been able to send international text, despite having roaming activated. Since I switched plans when I got the new phone, I can't actually determine if its the contract, the phone, or both that's not letting me send (but I suspect its Vodafone - something else I need to hassle them about)
Any help would be awesome
Sounds like you don't have some settings. Give Vodafone a ring and see if they can send the correct settings to your phone. They won't take responsibility but they can help you like that since your using their service. If that doesn't work, have a look in the APN settings.

Thanks Meaple, I'll have a go, although Vodafone generally redirects you to their website where you input your phone model and it gives you the APN values you need to put in, which I have done.
Having said that, I can't send MMS with my phone despite having their APN values, so I know the MMS part must be wrong somehow
- I didn't think it could be the APN because the internet isn't completely inaccessible? Is it possible for apps to be able to use the net while the browser can't?
Never mind - Solved my problem.
In my attempt to fix my MMS problem way back, I changed settings around and stupidly added the "MMS Port" and "MMS proxy" as the proxy + port for internet, without realising the actual options for those two were further down.
- Deleted those, and went back and re-did the setup for the MMS as per vodafone instructions, setting up a separate "VF PXT" APN
(in my search for solutions I'd found a post somewhere saying you could combine the information for MMS and internet into 1 APN, and that's what I had done)
Cheers for nudging me to re-check APN settings, Meaple
