[Q] Android and WiFi with redirects - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Posted this in another forum, but you all are the experts. Impossible for me to access my work WiFi because of redirects (splash screen to accept use parameters).
Wondering if a custom ROM fixes it or if there is another solution.
Having an issue connecting to WiFi with Evo updated via official release of 2.2. I couldn't access it via 2.1 either. It's an odd network designation.
However, the iPhone can connect once I okay the error message.
Is there a work around that you may know about? Web search basically told me that the protocol is old and useless and that it should be changed. That is not possible.
Network designation is 1.1.1.1. I was unable to add links clarifying this because I am a new user.

Well Android can not connect to 1.1.1.1 addresses / networks / redirects. However the iPhone can. Is it inherent to the Android, or is there an app or tweak to get it to work.
This message ends by saying it will be fixed with Froyo.
Still can't post links to show what I mean.

Steamliver I just did a Google search for "Android 1.1.1.1" and this was the top result: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1597
I'm guessing this is the problem you are describing. Sounds frustrating and it has been going on for a long time. The newest post at the time I'm writing this recommends installing the Fennec browser (Firefox for Android, basically) and that worked for the poster.
If you have a laptop you could bring to work and tether via USB, I wonder if that would work? Just a temporary work around to use the phone to establish the wifi connection, then view the browser redirect on the laptop, accept, and then maybe you would be good to go?
Also, the simplest thing might be to call the IT department and ask them for help. Given Android's growing market share, one of them probably already have an Android phone and a fix for this problem. Good luck.

I have tried firefox and that did not solve the problem, does anyone have another ideas how to solve this.
It seems that 1.1.1.1 is locked in the android.

[Q] Problem while connecting windows marketplace via HD mini

Hi
I have acquired HTC HD mini recently. I upgraded its ROM to new version 1.36.720.X. But still I am not able to connect Windows Marketplace via my mobile. My GPRS connection is set correctly as I am able to connect Facebook and My Phone successfully. I am facing issue with Windows Live and Marketplace.
I always get error while trying to connect Market place that
"There may be a problem with the Marketservice now. Check your internet connection and try again later."
Can anybody provide me solution for this.
Registry value for HKLM\Systems\Versions\Aku is .5.3.3 (Which is due to latest OS version came with ROM) . Hence that earlier fix of changing value of Aku is not workable though I tried it.
I think that there are many unfortunates like me who have faced same problem.
Thanks in advance for help.
regards,
Pranit
Hi
It has been long time and I have received no answer. Please help me as I have been not able to use marketplace. I have tried all solution mentioned in forum but with no effect.
uninstall and redownload marketplace.worked for me.
This solution does not work. I didn't know how to uninstall Windows marketplace. Hence I installed and replaced downloaded version of marketplace app. Need a concrete solution. Just to mention, I am from india. I came across one more user of HD mini who is facing same issue.
I need helping hand here. Kindly somebody give me some solution. Is there any issue while accessing Marketplace from India?
Is your time date correct for your country.
I had the same problem i change the time to right time for my country and marketplace could connect.
I hope you understand my english.
Yes. I have synchronised time with internet. Still no effect. Assume that I have no idea about how to set the local time and guide me. I am really pissed off as my all efforts to connect Marketplace are failed.
go to settings 'time, date", and also check "country and text" just below the tab "time and date" I hope you understand this i have to translate from dutch
Hope this solve's your problem.
Then I have done it correctly. Still with no effect. I just wanted to confirm it. Everything seems just right.
i found this regarding your problem
Have you tried this deleting a reg key that sets the download location for Marketplace.
Can you please tell me where to find this entry in registry?
HKCU\Security\Software\Microsoft\Marketplace;Downl oadLocation
I found this on the forum of mobilitydigest.com.
Maybe you can find a solution for your problem there.
Just typ in Google marketplace bootstrap
tried. But still not working. I am stuck since I bought HD mini.Have tried number of options to connect marketplace and all met with failure. Can you think of other solution?
I have had this problem too. But simply killing the process in Task Manager, rebooting the device and retrying worked for me!
Please tell me which process is to be killed. I tried to locate process and kill it. If I am not wrong then in task manager there is no option to kill process but to kill application.

Kill application worked for me. But killing processes can be done in the Task Manager by clicking Menu => Display => Processes
Hi , I have tried all sort of options now. But I have met no success. Please, please provide me some solution. My HD mini is sort of useless if I am not able to access marketplace. I am not able to buy certain apps which I would like to.
This guy had the same problem as you.
I've had this problem for quite some time and I think I may have found a solution that I didn't really seem to find in many other places. I believe that Windows Marketplace Mobile requires an authenticated connection to connect (network associated GPRS such as AT&T, Edge, 3G, etc...). To connect to WinMo Market with a wifi, I believe also requires authentication. My own personal router is secured with WPA and AES encryption, which my phone can connect to. I had no problems with connecting to the internet via browser (for the most part) with Wifi or Edge. Problem is, for whatever reason, Windows Marketplace did not recognize that my Wifi was authenticated. After playing around for quite some time to figure out why, I stumbled on a program called Advanced Configuration Tool (I own an unlocked HTC HD2). Turns out, my stock ROM had WPA Authentication disabled (which explains why flashing to a new ROM work for people since that option is typically enabled by default). I guess somewhere along the long, my phone had disabled it, most likely by some action of my own. So after re-enabling it in the network settings of the program, I had no more problems connecting to Winmo Market. Additionally make sure that your wireless config on your phone enables IEEE 802.1x network access control (you can adjust this on the actual wireless network setting where you input your passwords). I'm sure there are ways to activate it through the registry, but Advanced Configuration Tool by Touchxperience developers made it easy (it's in the network settings menu).

[Q] internet connection through wifi problem

I upgraded from my G1 to the new G2.
I am in the military and currently deployed to Iraq. I pay for wifi internet in my dorm. Using my Laptop or my G1 i am able to connect to a wifi service out here that i pay for. once i connect i pull up the browser and it will redirect me to the log in page for the server (where we have to enter a username and pass to allow acceses to the internet. without entering it we are only connected localy). when i use my G2 i can connect to the wifi hotspot no problem, it shows me "obtaining IP adress" and then says "connected to balad-hotspot" just like it would on my computer or G1. but when i pull up the browser it just goes to a "web page not available" for anything i type in. it wont automatically redirct me like both my laptop and G1 do. i even tried typing in the adress it pulls up on my computer when it loads the log in screen, but still shows me "web page not available" Does the G1 and G2 use the same browser? and if so why doesnt it redirect me? what else could cause this problem or fix it please?
with the new OTA update for wifi calling and sms messages you can see why i would love to have this issure fixed. also if i go to a free wifi area (such as a recreational center, where there is no log in neccessary, just connect and go) i have no problem connecting with my G2. so i know the wifi works with it. it just wont seem to redirect my to the log in page or allow it to come up.
firstly: thanks for what you do for our country.
try a different browser. i recommend dolphin HD
thank you!
hmm ok, ill try looking for that tomorrow. can be found in market?
Yes, it is in the market
Wow, they have WiFi at Balad now? Man, when I was there 3 years ago we had to wait in line for a computer! As the others have said, try using a different browser. I'm always switching between the default and Opera depending on what page I'm trying to access.
Oh yeah, if it's anything like Google Voice, the new update may not work for WiFi calling, depending on what country the IP address you snag is registered to. I had Google Voice on my G1, and as soon as I went to Europe and tried to use it on a WiFi hotspot, I got a message saying that Google Voice was not usable in the country I was in.
Stay safe and don't eat too much Taco Bell or Burger King!
haha ya, but its a HUGE rip off. way expensive and slow as can be. but its really our only option to get interent in dorm so im a sucker and bought it.
and for the goodle voice, hmmm i have it on my laptop and it works with this internet. dont know if it will be different with G2 but we shall see.
I tried Dolphine HD and Opera and still having the same issue. it only ever pulls up "web page cannot be displayed" The Internet guys out here said it was my browser. i confirmed with tmo that the browser is the same for the G1 and the G2. yet it works with G1 and not G2. and still wont work with any of the new browsers. Im stuck and this blows!!!

[Q] Unable to access specific websites

Ok first off this is my first post so don't go flaming me. I have searched the site thoroughly although maybe I am not entering the correct keywords to return a valid result. I have had my galaxy nexus since launch and am glad I migrated from iOS to an android phone.
That being said everything works flawlessly for my needs I'm on the VZW phone unrooted no firmware modifications, the phone is almost stock with the exception of like 3 apps I have downloaded and the ICS update that was pushed to my phone immediately after turning it on.
One of my primary uses with my smartphone is accessing a website for school where I can view grades, scheduling, add and drop classes etc..
The browser on 3g, 4g, Wifi works flawlessly going to any website either through a search engine or via manually entering the URL. However the school website is unaccessible through the browser on this phone and it is the only page I can not get to. I have checked via other smart phones, desktops and other devices concurrently while using the nexus and am able to validate the site is up and available.
If I do a google search for it, go the the parent university site and use hyperlink or manually enter the URL I get web page not found - network error. I was thinking at first that it was an https problem but I am able to visit other secure sites without any problem. I also tried the option to goto to a non-mobile version of the site without success as well.
here is the web address
EDIT: apparently I can't post a link but you can navigate by doing a google search for UM-Dearborn Connect it should be the first result returned
So my question is what gives? Is there some type of a credential issue with my browser and this site? an incompatability with the new OS and this site I just don't understand why only this site I am unable to access.
If another galaxy nexus user could try to access this site and give feedback it would be greatly appreciated.
Try using Opera Mobile or Firefox. Both can be downloaded from the market. I will try to get to the site now.

Edit: I get the same network error message as you when trying to connect in the stock browser. Opera Mobile seems to work fine. I had a similar problem with a University site on the Gingerbread browser on my last phone. The beauty of Android is that there is a solution to nearly any issue you come across.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I get the same problem when looking at Newegg Promotions that I get in my email. It's really weird. I get the same problem on my Transformer as well.
Occurs on EDGE/3G/4G and WiFi.
Maxthon
You may also want to give the Maxthon browser a go. I use it over the stock browser and it always works well.
Thanks for the verification on your phones guys, I thought I was going crazy and wasn't sure if I should try a factory reset.
While using another browser may be an alternative my inherent inner geek is not satisfied with resorting to an alternative option.
I'm going to try and get to the bottom of this. If I get any updates I'll post to this thread.

Unable to browse Gawker websites when tethered (GN Verizon LTE)

Just got my GN LTE yesterday, and now I am seeing the continuation of an issue I saw with my Thunderbolt.
On the phone, everything is fine. But when I tether my laptop (Win 7 Pro) or tablet (GT 8.9), I cannot browse any Gawker family sites. Really strange problem that I have no explanation for.
Anyone else able to confirm?
Thanks
I can confirm. Same setup, the site appears to just time out then default to what appears to be a mobile version of the site's index (i.e. lifehacker, gizmodo, etc.). Sorry this is old but I just tried to search the issue today. Anyone have an idea on how to resolve this? Might check with Gawker support as well...
Also running the 4.0.4 update but still encountering same issue which leads me to wonder if it's something with their site.

Tethered with the plan? If it's not, it could be that the desktop version of the site flags you when you try to view it? Maybe?
I had forgot about this after there were no responses.
Just tried it now, and had no problems. Gawker, Jalopnik, Deadspin are loading fine.
I have absolutely no explanation. I know it was an issue more than once, but I do not use tethering every day to keep track of.

[Q] Tethering fix

Hey guys,
I apologize if this has been asked but I couldn't find it on any particular thread. About 10 days ago I started getting T-Mobile's upsell for tethering that I'd (thanks to the awesome developers) been able to successfully evade for over a year. Is there any fix for this? I'm (now) running Lollipop but it happened before upgrading so it seems unrelated. Thanks in advance!

There's only one solution working for me right now, but you'll have to buy this app: Wifi Tether Router
Go into /system and make a copy of your build.prop
Open your build.prop with a text editor and add this line all the way at the bottom:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Save the file and reboot your device
Open the wifi tether router app and go to "configure wifi router." At the bottom of the page, there's a button to visit the site for device config settings. Scroll down that page to find settings for Note 3.
Once you're all set up, you should be good to go. Only thing you have to do is use a UserAgent switching app on your browser to make it think you're on a mobile device. I'm using User-Agent Switcher (with the blue globe icon) for Google Chrome.
Hope that helps.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply, but with a user-agent switcher, everything works even now. I was hoping to avoid changing my headers because certain sites won't be served to a "mobile" device. Luckily, my internet tv apparently doesn't send any headers because I can still tether unlimited...ly with that, but it's definitely frustrating getting mobile versions of sites on my laptop. I have observed a somewhat strange behavior that I wonder if we can exploit. It's somewhat finicky, but I've noticed that if I Google the name of a site I want to access (still via the address bar, though), the search results come up without TMO nagging me about a hotspot and oftentimes the link from the search results takes me to the site. I can't make sense of it, but as an example, if you try www.yahoo.com, you'll get the hotspot page, but if you google "yahoo" and click the first result, you get taken to the site. *shrug* I'm not smart enough to figure it out, but perhaps this observation will help someone else solve the problem
