Android Tether vs. 3G Mobile Hotspot - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone tell me the difference between the two on 2.2 Froyo. I currently have an Incredible & would like to know if one is better in any regards than the other.

They are the same......only the one from vzw costs $20...but you can hack it to get it for free.

i use the hotspot bc it was easy to get for free... but seems to take a lil longer to connect

i've actually been having troubles with the verizon hotspot, when i use it for longer than maybe 5 or 10 minutes it starts stopping and starting constantly unless i reboot the phone and try again. sometimes it lasts longer. also, the internet speed seems slightly gimped as well, everything seemed to work faster through wireless tether app (download speeds were higher as well).

I got rid of '3G HotSpot' and just use 'Wireless Tether' v2.0.5-pre7.

Pre8 is out now too

how do you hack 3g mobile hotspot?

is this legit? and can you go more into detail?

Its legit. Ask anyone else...thats how to get free tethering from a normally not free service
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

Ya, I did the free hack, and it works. Anywho thanks, I was thinking they were the same, I was just curious...

wow, really works. thnx alot!

I've done the hack more than once with different 2.2 ROMs, but I either cannot see it while scanning for hotspots or cannot obtain an IP address (via laptops, handhelds, etc).. So I stick to Wireless Tether.

I find that the 3g hotspot thats built into froyo (with the dun mod hack) is a little quicker... haven't had any issues with it whatsoever.

OK, guys so although I am relatively smart at things all this is new to me so can i ju confirm that the wireless tethering I have on my incred is utilized the same as the verizon mobile hotspot would correct? Meaning the tethering allows my phone to be a mobile hotspot as well??

Worked like a freaking charm... Thanks man your awesome.. Now just curious is there a way for verizon to know that someone is utilizing their hotspot without paying for a subscription? Also, the wireless tethering is the same as the hotspot correct??

I'm still using the android.tether (wireless tether) I got from mejdam on youtube. Not sure if he wrote the app or was just sharing it out, but it works great.
I'll never load up Verizon's Hotspot app. Even with the hack, I just wouldn't trust it but that's me.

Yeah I'm using the android tether as well, but have also opened the mobile hotspot just to have it..

I cant get wireless tether to work on mine! Running 8/26 OTA leak, wireless tether pre .8 and BFS #1. Log shows iwconfig failed, HELP please

Wireless tether and Verizon
Hey, just to let every one know, Verizon can easily watch you bandwidth usage and if your downloading a lot they will notice that your not paying for it, and having to be rooted to use wireless tether, that's a violation of your contact.... just sayin....

Go to google and type in android wireless tether.apk and download it.it is a simple and very easy to use wifi tether app. You won't find it in the market though. I use wireless tether and it works perfectly

Pdanet and easy tether you can use for stock G2. To use wireless tether, your g2 needs to be rooted. I forgot to mention that pdanet and easy tether does tethering through usb. So you can't get wifi tether through pda and easy tether. Id recommend rooting. Its simple and easy

Go with EasyTether before PDAnet. The speeds I see are twice as fast with EasyTether. PDA net is spendy too. Of course, with certain app markets they are all free.

Unfortunately T-Mobile disabled the tethering. Probably afraid of the usage on there fairly new hspa+ network. Just use visionary app and download wireless tether and you'll be good to go. It is a temporary solution until we get perm root.

Until the OTA update comes or Root I've been using VISIONary for temp root along with Wireless Tether for Root User. Works like a charm. Two separate apps. Would be nice to see the temp root feature rolled up into the Wireless Tether App.

I cant figure out how to change the passphrase when I enable encryption.
I tried a simple 8 character - 15 character pass in example, abcde12345.
When my pc asks for network key, I enter that pass and it tries to connect but never does. I tried simple words and still cant get it to enable security.
What am I doing wrong?
I'm running pc winxp pro and g2 root wireless tether.

If you are using wireless tether apk then you dont have to worry about the passphrase. The reason being is cuz in order for a device to connect to your wifi, you have to authorize it (access control) when a device tries to connect, your phone recieves an unauthorized connection from that device. The ONLY way that the device can connect to the wifi even though its an open network, is if you give it access. Try it

Hello,
I have the epic 4g touch rooted with starburst rom. I installed android wifi tether app and I am able to connect to the wifi from laptop, but i cant actually browse to any websites. I can ping from cmd prompt to sites. When I use sprint hotspot everything works fine. Also is there an app that will let me tether at 4g speed?

3rd party tethering apps (ie, wifi tether, usb EasyTether, bluetooth tether) are not subjected to the 5GB Hot Spot Sprint limitation. The data used by these apps are seen as "phone data" which is unlimited, whereas Hot Spot data is limited to 5GB with overage charges/fees.
Am I right?
Plus... it's bad enough having the phone run on 4G now you want it to act like a wireless router transmitting over wifi to tether a laptop. HOT HOT HOT
I think 4G tethering is most efficient and "coolest" in temperature over USB Tethering. If you must tether wirelessly, then Bluetooth is probably better than wifi. Not as big of a battery drain.

hey so i dont have bluetooth on my laptop.. i just use it at work on my laptop to stream music, netflix etc. so which thrid party app would be recommended for 4g. I get great 4g signal at my office. Also i get really really crappy speed with usb tethering like 069 dwn and .65 up
what version of wifi tether are you using?
I'm using v3-beta-6. I can connect using 4g, browsing websites and such. But for some reason, the down steam speeds are capped at ~0.7Mbs when I run a speed test. On my phone, I get 10Mbs down. I know its using 4g because the ping time is much lower and my upload stream is 1.5Mbs.
On 3g, i'm only getting .85 Mbs down and 0.5Mbs up

I am a little confused because I see the link posted for the 4g hotspot fix which has been out for quite some time now. Also as far as it causing issues with Sprint you can rest assure if that was the case it would be posted all over this community. I am not sure why your phone is not working properly with the wifi tethers but I can assure you that Sprint Hotspot on our phone works quite lovely. Also the data usage restrictions do not apply for phones but for actual Hotspot devices. Please go to the link listed above flash the hotspot mod and enjoy life..... It works I am on it right now....

I'm not sure what hot spot thread you were in but the hot spot hack works on 3g and 4g. And it reads now with 4g not help with 4g... I've used it on both ek02 and el29 with no issues. I hardly ever use sprints crappy 3g and I'm tethering fine. Also take into consideration the hot spot is infrastructure and can be access by more than just computers unlike the tether apps on the market which all are ad hoc...

Meant to edit my 1st post and I quoted myself.. Wow I must be smoking some good ish!!!
I have Calk 2.8.1 which supports sprint 4g hotspot. But in reality, I can never get download speed past the 3g speed. Upload is fast but download seems to be capped to 3g speed a confirmed by other users. EasyTether blows them all away with 4g speed of 8-10 Mbps. But of course it is not wireless and does not support infra structure mode.
Here's what I did to get full 4g speed while tethering via wifi..
Go to market and install filter proxy..
Open application, enable it and remember port number (Default is 8000)
Start wifi tethering..
Setup proxy in your browser, point it to your phone's ip address and port 8000 (if you use default)
Do this for http, https and ftp..
And you are all set.. Test your speed.

I can't seem to find the exact app. Will this work with Sprint Hotspot WIFI tethering or just the 4G Android Wifi Tether.
I just tested Android WifiTether 3.1beta 6 and it seems to pass the full 4g speed to connected device. I am losing 10% or less in 5 tests.

Bluetooth tethering, requires hotspot?

I was playing around with settings tonight and discovered Settings -> More Settings (under Data) -> tethering. Checked it, paired my phone and my Win7 PC, initiated an "access point" connection from the PC, and suddenly I was browsing while using my phone as an access point. Granted it was 3G speeds, but it did work.
Does this work for me because I have mobile hotspot, or is this a feature that shouldn't be working, or does it work for everyone? I'm not rooted, using the latest software update (with multiview). I can't even remember far enough back to when a carrier would have ever simply allowed bluetooth tethering, not even Sprint. It's a nice feature to have since WiFi radios usually wear batteries down faster.

Interesting, thanks. I'm still surprised Sprint would allow this considering they offer unlimited data.
That's weird. I just tried this and I got an error 67, registration failed. Maybe they "fixed" it in the software update.

Are using a Galaxy Note 2 on Sprint? Your image tag says you're on AT&T.
Sprint has unlimited data on the phone data only. They have separate plans for hotspots.

I wasn't talking about hotspot. I was talking about Bluetooth tethering, and asking if it requires hotspot to work, because with unlimited data you could tether with bluetooth and theoretically have unlimited internet on your PC through your phone.

If you're paying your carrier for tethering, then yes. Then you use the tethering app.
For me on AT&T, they will kill my unlimited data plan and charge me an extra $15/mo + my new limited dataplan fees
If you are asking how to do it without paying/changing dataplan, that would likely require Root, pehaps a ROM or some other application support.
Tethering is allowed on all plans here in Canada. However there is no way I can see to enable bluetooth tethering, only wifi.

I'm in the same boat as you with unlimited data on AT&T. I received a warning several months ago because they caught me tethering without the plan. I was using the built in tether in CM7. Koush from ClockworkMod created a non-root tether app which I have been using every since, but it requires an app on your Windows or Mac computer to use it.
ClockworkMod Tether does not require root on your phone and does not require a separate tethering plan. Tether should work with any carrier and phone, and is not blockable or detectable by carriers[1]. To get around the root requirement on your phone, Tether will need to install a virtual network adapter on your computer; so there is a PC side install. [3]
[1] It functions as a proxy, and not as a NAT/masquerade solution that other tether solutions use. Though carriers can still check for http user agent string, but I have an idea to work around that. They typically check the TTL for desktop values. All usual carrier data charges and quotas will apply, but you will not need a separate tethering plan.

It was a good investment, although for some reason on my Atrix and Macbook Air, the speed was rather slow and it is USB only
Link HERE
I have a question. Once (about year and a half ago) I got caught tethering from my Samsung Focus WP7, but only after I flashed the international ROM. While talking with the service Rep, he explained to me that AT&T catches people tethering by pinning the devices and if 2 IP addresses come back, then the automatic system sends them a warning about your account. When you tether via bluetooth, does your PC/Mac register a new IP address on your device?
apparently singiven
So after a couple hours on the phone here is what I have come up with.
The rep from Samsung said that the feature has been disable on all Canadian models regardles of carrier.
I asked him why and he said that maybe it was an unpopular feature....
Very disappointed to say the least.

Switching from Verizon to T-Mobile. . .

I am coming over to T-Mobile from Verizon. I had unlimited data and am getting the same here. My only question is, can I use an app like FoxFi to tether without throttling?
I understand that I'm getting 2.5GB of tethering off the bat. But if I choose to tether more than that on a given month (which I probably won't, but I'd still like to know), can I use Foxfi and not get throttled?
From what I have seen tmo will still see it as tethering. You can try to spoof your browser to be seen as an android device, but that kinda defeats the issue as website will revert to their mobile counter part. But then again sk e people have had success with the spoofing of browsers. Your other option is to use a vpn as tmo will not be able to read the packets being sent so then no need to spoof the browser. But if you are tethering to an ipad/iphone, android tablet/phone then you can tether till your hearts desire without any issue. I tethered my transformer tablet for about 20GB (netflix at work, they have no wifi there) without any issues.

Not sure if you have 4G unlimited or not, but I do. On the unlimited 4g (not capped 4g then Edge afterwards) they will not let you go past the 2.5 GB hotspot usage. If you have a limit of highspeed data then you have to spoof or vpn. Look at all the threads in the note 2 and note 3 threads about tethering. All of them with unlimited 4g data are having to spoof or vpn to use it as a hotspot. It works for a little while without spoofing or vpn then all of a sudden they get the upsale page. That's with any method they say is suppose to be a work around.

I guess you are one of the lucky one's. Numbers dont lie. Like I said look in the note 2 &3 forums at all the tethering threads. The majority of people cannot tether to their laptops and pcs without spoofing otherwise they get the upsale page. I myself tried all the "fixes" and it works for a few minutes then the upsale page pops up. I tried with both wifi tether for root users and foxfi. My android tablet on the other hand needs no spoofing or vpn just because tmobile sees it as a mobile device and so just sees mobile data. Like I said lucky you and the other few in your position, but for the majority of us yeah spoofing or vpn to a laptop or desktop is needed to keep tmobile from blocking tethering after the initial 2.5 GB is used.
